What distro (in your opinion) is best for learning for a noob? Posted: 02 Mar 2021 05:00 AM PST Hello, I have been using Ubuntu (Gnome) on a dual boot alongside Windows 10 for almost a month now and I think I'm quite familiar with it. I have also learned how to install stuff from the terminal and a few commands. I have also tried using Linux Mint (Cinnamon), MX Linux (XFCE) and Manjaro (KDE) on virtual machines and USB flash drives. I think I'm comfortable with Ubuntu the most, but I'd like to explore and learn new stuff. What are your recommendations? Edit: Thanks guys, I'll try using Arch on a VM! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2021 10:32 AM PST I have had Linux Lite 5.2 on a Lenovo Thinkpad E545 for 3 months. The printer, which I can print to from my phone and iPad, is a Canon MG-7120. I've tried using the Printers window from the main menu to set this printer up a few times and I've gotten a few different types of errors doing so. I read that the firewall could cause problems during printer setup, so I began by disabling the firewall through the linux lite firewall UI. Today, there are 2 options for my printer named, and I know that one of them is from a previous time I tried to set up the printer because it has the nickname I gave it "Canon-Printer." I chose it and it has the device uri as ipp://10.0.0.114:631/ipp. I try to print a test page, and "There was a problem sending document 'Test Page' to the printer." I click on 'diagnose' and it shows 5 different possible names for the printer, including ones that have my computer name in them. I choose "Canon-Printer." It tells me to select "enabled" because the Queue is not enabled. It says to go to system-adminstrator-print settings, but I can't find that in my main menu. Instead I just go to the print properties window, because there is a box to check next to "enabled". As soon as I do, it throws up the same "problem sending document" message and the enabled box unchecks itself on it's own. The test page job does appear in the the "document print status" window as "pending." Now I don't know what to do, because I can't understand what problems are actually being encountered. Probably someone else does? Please help! I did also try choosing the other version of the printer in my printer menu "Canon-MG7100-series." The error I get with that one is different: Unable to locate printer 150FIA000000.local. The device URI for that one is ipp://Canon%20MG7100%20series._ipp._tcp.local/ Don't know what these things mean, and having trouble using the internet to solve!! I've seen solutions where the address needs to be tweaked slightly or something with port 631 has to be fixed, but I haven't gotten far enough in my studies to clear up these issues yet. I can be patient until I learn myself, but it would be nice to be able to just print!! I will answer any questions ASAP if someone wants to help! [link] [comments] |

Give me some distro recommendations Posted: 02 Mar 2021 01:34 PM PST Hi, I want to switch from Windows to Linux so I was wondering which distro should I download? I was thinking either Ubuntu or Linux Mint i'm not sure since I never used Linux before. Anything would be appreciated! [link] [comments] |

How do I remove Eye of Gnome on Fedora 33? Posted: 01 Mar 2021 07:27 PM PST The title says it all. Didn't not knew where to ask this. Tried going to the Software Center that the distro has, and no option of removal. Any help? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2021 04:20 AM PST I want to make the transition to Linux, but cannot get rid of Windows for now. I have heard dual booting has issues, what can I expect? Is it worth it to buy another drive and have one OS each drive? [link] [comments] |
Software to keep steam from running? Posted: 02 Mar 2021 09:05 AM PST So I have a lot of trouble sleeping. I hate just laying there for hours and hours, so I usually get up and play with my phone or turn on my computer when I should be trying to sleep. Obviously, that makes the problem worse and I stay up later and later. I have gotten my sleep schedule under control before, but it's getting away from me again and I want to fix it before it gets bad. I found lots of free website blockers so I can keep myself off Reddit at 3 am, and I've found ways to block steam for windows but nothing for Linux. I understand this sounds ridiculous, I should be able to just lay down and go to sleep, but I can't. It takes me at least an hour every night and I am just not patient enough. Any help would be appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Is AMD CPU compatible with Linux? (2021) Posted: 02 Mar 2021 09:01 AM PST I am starting to have my doubts on Intel and thinking to upgrade my PC to an AMD CPU. I will be dual booting Windows and Linux in my new build. However i googled to find that AMD's support for Linux is not yet quite firm Most of my googling results in inqueries dating as far as 2015. I would like to know if AMD's support for Linux has improved (i.e. reduced crashes/bugs, etc.) as of 2021. Does AMD work well with Linux (such as the following distros): -Ubuntu -Mint -Manjaro -Arch -Debian -Kali -PopOS [link] [comments] |

Help with writing a script.. Need to scan journalctl and have it email a report Posted: 02 Mar 2021 04:59 AM PST First time posting here. Currently in Linux class and stuck. My task is scanning journalctl and automating an email report each time port 22 is accessed. I'm understanding the principles, but not entirely sure how to string it all together. Weird problem with Linux Mint and Wifi Connection Posted: 02 Mar 2021 06:01 AM PST Hi, I installed Linux Mint 2 days ago. It worked fine the first time, but now I got a problem. Whenever I plug in my Wifi Stick (FRITZ WLAN AC 860), I can't open many programs, I cant click on the connection thing in the bottom left corner, and shutting down the PC takes an eternity. Without the stick, the system works well, but when I plug it in and try to click on the Wifi symbol, it lags for a few seconds and I can't do anything. When I try to open Firefox, it doesn't respond. Same with some other programs. The system is new and I haven't changed much on it. I installed a few applications and a browser add-on in Firefox. Nothing more. Can someone help me? How safe is it to dualboot? (Linux x Windows) Posted: 02 Mar 2021 01:16 AM PST I was using Linux only for many years, but sometimes I really want to run a few Windows only apps, that dont work with wine etc. I have a few Linux's on my PC, but I never tried dual booting Windows with Linux. DaVinci Resolve on Linux with Radeon GPU Posted: 02 Mar 2021 07:07 AM PST Hi, I've just installed Ubuntu 20.10 and I'd like to use DaVinci Resolve for video editing. I've downloaded and run it's installer from official website and it got installed without any problems. However when I try to run it, it says "Unsupported GPU Processing Mode. Please review the GPU drivers and configuration". When I search the internet I found many threads, all of which mentioned that I need to install amdgpu-pro drivers. And here's where problems come, because when you go to AMD's official drivers download page for my GPU (rx 480) there are drivers available only for a selected group of distros and their versions. There's no download for Ubuntu 20.10 (but there's for Ubuntu 20.04). Does this mean if I want to use DaVinci Resolve on Linux, I'm basically forced to use only distros and their versions, for which AMD provides drivers? It's just sounds very ugly, that I'm limited to this small group of distros. Is there any way to get DaVinci Resolve running on any distro, while using AMD GPU? [link] [comments] |
Please help - graphics problems related to my reboot sequence Posted: 02 Mar 2021 10:29 AM PST I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 on a Dell Inspiron 5570 laptop. I have the following graphics issues when I boot/reboot normally (power on - proceed to login w/password).
However, I've noticed that if I boot into the GRUB menu, go to Recovery Mode, and choose to resume normal boot (without doing anything else in the Recovery/GRUB menus), the wipe effect and cursor lag are no longer present once I reach my desktop. The monitor still cannot be detected. I believe this to be related to my graphics drivers, but I don't know what to do next. More information I think is relevant: - The output for command inxi -G was: Someone mentioned elsewhere that based on ^this output, I'm using the GPU as a raw frame buffer device, and I use a software renderer, so I very possibly have misconfigured something Xorg related. -Both commands ubuntu-drivers devices and ubuntu-drivers list produce NO output -In Software & Updates > Additional Drivers, I'm told "No additional drivers available" - I also tried to use a PPA repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa but nothing changed. So I don't know where to go from here. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 02 Mar 2021 09:52 AM PST Hey, I recently switched to linux and a friend helped me installing Ableton on Wine. Everything works fine, but then I wanted to install a synth and the installation worked and its shown in Ableton, but when I want to use the Plugin its saying „Requires OpenGL 1.4". Then I looked it up and my processor integraded graphics (Intel HD 3000) support wide more than OpenGL 1.4 (see here: https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005524/graphics.html). Maybe its just a setting in wine but I dont know how to fix it so maybe you can help me. [link] [comments] |
