Rewire house from coax to rj45 Posted: 02 Mar 2021 07:11 PM PST Hi all! I just bought a small bungalow built in 1970 and the previous owner wired almost every room with coaxial cabling 10 years ago. I'm thinking to replace that wiring with rj45, using the existing coax to pull the future cabling. I would like to avoid opening walls and I estimate a good 50% of the cabling can be accessed via the basement ceiling. So, good or bad idea? should I invest in MoCA adapters instead? Where do I start? I got a bunch of cat5 rolls, my crimper is ready and my cable tester has fresh batteries! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2021 05:38 AM PST So I upped my internet speeds to 500mbps because it was the same price as what I was paying for 200 mbps. My modem (Arris SB6183) is only rated for 300 mbps. I hooked my computer straight into the modem and ran a speed test using http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest and got 550mbps download speeds and bufferbloat of around 1100-1500ms. Is this due to the modem being rated lower than what my internet speed is? Edit: When I run the test while hooked up to my router, I still got around 500-550mbps downloads, but a bit more bloatbuffer. My router is an Asus RT-AC66U [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2021 06:01 PM PST I was reading that it is recommended to block all inbound connections by default for a router. However, I was under the impression if the router does not have a service on a certain port why block it? For example, let's say I make a rule block inbounding port 80 on top but I don't actually have a service on that port. Would that make sense to even block it then? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2021 07:59 PM PST The router we bought was exposed to -20 when it was in storage. Could it be damaged? I let it warm up a couple days before hooking it up. I feel like it should be performing better than it should be. Netgear - Nighthawk R7000 [link] [comments] |
help with Cisco 3750G in Layer3 Mode & IPv6 Posted: 02 Mar 2021 05:59 PM PST So this is my home setup, but it is somewhat decent for a home network I think. I can always do better if I was to be honest. But new to the Routed Interfaces of Cisco. I have a question of both technical and design. My Switch is a 3750G 48port PoE in Layer3 Mode. I have 7 VLANs in my house, Vlan1 - Servers/Mgmt Devices, Vlan10 - End User Devices, Vlan11 - Lab, Vlan12 - IoT, Vlan13 - Work, Vlan255 - Guest, Vlan1000 - Routing. Inside of my house I run 3x hyper-v hosts, with a virtual OpnSense Firewall. All servers are LACP 4x1Gb ports. The Cisco switch is the gateway for Vlan1,10,11 and OpnSense is the gateway for Vlan12,13,255. OpnSense LAN is configured as 10.1.10.1/29 and the other side of the routed intervace (Vlan1000) is 10.1.10.2/29. This is the default route for Vlan1,10,11. OpnSense just sees these as static routes. This is done so if the firewall reboots that my home environment doesn't lose DHCP, DNS, or other functions. I run Windows DHCP and DNS, and I have a pair of Pi-Holes that filter DNS for me with Conditional Forwarders for my home domain. I also run my own Plex streaming system. My question is really two fold. Currently everything is IPv4, but was looking at doing IPv6 but with the routed interface I am not sure what I would need to configure on the switch to allow IPv6 to see those interfaces to hand out packets to/from the firewall. My firewall currently gives the LAN (Vlan1000) a IPv6 address but nothing downstream gets DHCPv6. I am not sure what I need to do to pass that through to my actual VLAN1 or VLAN10 on the switch since the firewall doesn't see it as an interface. I am not a stranger to Cisco, but been a long time since I have worn a Network Engineer/Admin hat but had a CCNA and CCNE about 15 years ago.. Main issue I want to solve for is IPv6 as I would like to get that functioning if at all possible. My internet connection if it matters is 1Gig/1Gig Fiber from AT&T. Using a BGW320-500 Residential Gateway. [link] [comments] |
Need help tracking down spontaneous network issue Posted: 02 Mar 2021 07:28 PM PST Hello all, Been having strange issues with my network lately. It seems that "randomly", a single wireless client (1 or 2 at a time) will experience 50-60% rx packet loss (tested by StarTrinity continuous speed test) for about 2 minutes, while everyone else is unimpacted. This is very frustrating, especially with all these zoom meetings lol. My setup is as follows (i can provide more info as needed) modem: arris surfboard SB6183 main router: TP-Link Archer C7 (v2) Raspberry pi 3: running Pi-hole, hosting a few miscellaneous homelab stuff All 3 of these devices are up to date in terms of their software. The only thing that's changed is that we got an Arlo security system. For those who don't know, the Arlo will always follow the main router's channel, and it is "impossible" to change it. I half suspect that this is the issue. Again, I can provide a lot more info if needed. I know my networking basics, but this one has me stumped. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Need advice on where to source a patch panel and some basic networking rack Posted: 02 Mar 2021 04:00 PM PST Hi I'm going to have my low voltage guy in my currently being built home come by in the next week or so and I need him to wire my whole house (cat6, some audio wire, and some alarm wire) all under my staircase. I am trying to find a good patch panel and a networking rack. Cable matters seems to be out of those keystone like patch panel that make things easier. Anyone can recommend a better one? Is there a way I can just buy the patch panel and not a networking rack yet? I am unsure if a network rack or if a full blown server rack (24U) will fit in my staircase. [link] [comments] |
Does anyone know where to buy the mounts for structured wiring cabinets? Posted: 02 Mar 2021 07:08 PM PST Looking for this, preferably, or any of their other mounts, but if I can find something else compatible that would be fine too at this point. [link] [comments] |
Any harm in mounting rack sideways? Posted: 02 Mar 2021 04:29 PM PST I have a small space in a closet for a small rack, but it is only 17" wide. Just shy of 19" width for a rack. I only need a 8u rack (14"). Is there any harm in rotating it 90 degrees so it's mounted sideways? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2021 06:41 PM PST ok so a few devices in the bedroom are particularly chatty and constantly filling my logs with arp requests. Is there a way to cut down on this aside from posting rules that filter them? My raspberry pi slows down significantly when I apply a filter to cull entries from in the log. Would installing a switch in that room, then connect the wired devices cut down on some of that? Right now there are two ethernet cables connected in that room and they are directly plugged into the router [link] [comments] |
Recommendations for an OS..... Posted: 02 Mar 2021 03:47 PM PST Currently, I'm running Untangle Firewall on an i7-4770 w/ 16GB RAM and 250GB SSD. The WAN interfaces are dual Intel 1 GBe NICs and 1 Intel 10GBe NIC. I would like to virtualize it. In addition, I have a Pi-Hole server running on another hypervisor and would like to consolidate it to the same box with Untangle FW. Any suggestions which OS I should go with? I looked at Windows 10 Pro with HyperV since it's easy to setup but concern about the possible security risks and the constant updates. Also, I'm considering Oracle Linux 8.3 (Red Hat offshoot) with Oracle VirtualBox and there's VMWare ESXi as well. Let me hear your opinions and thanks. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2021 01:36 PM PST I have the modem and router set up in a room upstairs. My area of activity is in my family room downstairs, not far away. Recently, my laptop (normally connected to the extender downstairs) keep dropping the Wifi. I had to go into the network/internet setting to disconnect and connect it again. Deleting the network adapter from device manager and rebooting would help for a while (updating the driver said it is the latest). I also have an iPhone connected to the same extender. The iPhone would have the wifi icon in full strength, but it would not refresh the web related material. Again, I have to turn off and on the Wifi to have the page refreshed. Are these incidences pointing to an aging extender? Or can you suggest any cure? [link] [comments] |
Choosing a hardware for my home network with Pfsense FW (VBox,KVM,ESXi) Posted: 02 Mar 2021 03:00 PM PST I am quite new to pfsense and only installed it on a host Win10 Laptop(HP Omen 17 with 32GB RAM) with Virtualbox VM and ESXi VM. Laptop has 2 NICs: 1st on mainboard and 2nd one using thunderbolt 3 port. After reading some articles and posts on forums I came to know that it is not ideal to use pfsense in a VM if the host is also a main machine as in my case. I set up pfsense VM but was not able to get the VLANs function properly as host NICs are in bridge mode. (Mostly used this step by step guide before the 2.5 release). I recently upgraded my Laptop RAM and ended up extra 2x8GB DDR4 SODIMM RAM sticks. There are also couple of SSD/HDDs available. I also bought a budget 5 port VLAN capable managed switch from TPLink. So now I am looking into some barebone MiniPCs so I can utilize the hardware I have on hand. I am student and on a tight budget. I may set aside 150-200 euros at the most in order to achieve a home network setup that includes ISP router(Gigabit speeds) + dedicated pfsense FW using NordVPN/PIA , VLAN switch, DDWRT Router, TP Link router, personal laptop, smart TV, work laptop, couple of android phones and some smart IoT devices. I am studying IT and would like to do some tests using VMs and variety of OSs. Because of that just buying a Netgate or Jetway(most use DDR3 and $200+ barebone) device is not an option for me. In future MiniPC will probably be hosting the pfsense and also some not very demanding VMs(file/media server). Not all budget MiniPCs come with more than 1 dedicated NIC nor they are Intel NICs so I will add one of these solely for pfsense network performance. Pfsense can run on any old laptop which I can probably buy under 150-100 euros but i am not into buying used stuff(until someone convinces me otherwise). The decisions I made so far could be not very ideal because of my limited knowledge hence is the post. Please guide me and share your own setups with similar experience. Links to the guides and some setup photos are appreciated. Which way is the best in my case so that I won't be wasting my hard earned money on something unnecessary. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2021 05:10 PM PST Spectrum left me hanging and I think it'll be more work to get them to come out than to just roll my own patch cable. I need a cable that has 2 RJ11s on one end and an RJ45 on the other. It needs to be wired such that the 2 line phone on the other end of the run can plug into a single RJ45 wall jack with it's RJ11 cord. Which pair do I use for which RJ11? Signal has to go spectrum modem (3 RJ11s)> patch cable>patch rack>wall run>2 line ATT phone. Does that make sense? [link] [comments] |
Searching/Opening up a new webpage is taking much longer than usual Posted: 02 Mar 2021 05:00 PM PST First off, I have Spectrum as my ISP if that has anything to do with it. Recently (1-2 weeks ago roughly) webpages are taking significantly longer to load, about 10-15 seconds longer on average and it doesn't happen every time I try to load one in, maybe about 20% of the time it is slower than normal. This has been happening on other devices like my phone as well. The problems are ranging from googling something, opening up a new website, loading in videos, pressing the play button on spotify, etc. I have tried restarting both my router and my modem which did not seem to have any affect. I also did a speedtest and I still have the same ping and down/up speed. If I am trying to open multiple websites at once and the slowdown happens they all load in at the exact same time after the extra delay. Any suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2021 07:50 PM PST I have two Pi-hole raspberry pi's running with the exact same setup. My router is a UniFi UDM PRO. My understanding is that when I set my LAN DNS servers to my two Pi-holes that the router should relatively balance the queries between the two pi's. Is this correct? Do other routers outside of Unifi balance DNS between servers? Right now all of my requests go to just one Pi-hole and the other one only gets used if the other is offline. If the router does not balance the load between DNS servers automatically, then is there a best practice or recommendation to balance the load without setting up a load balancer which creates a single point of failure? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

Extending my router signal using mesh Posted: 02 Mar 2021 07:35 PM PST I'm completely new to this and I don't understand what on the other posts are they talking about. I know basic to advance networking, but I'm totally new to mesh networking. Anyway, I have a dual-WAN router(Asus BRT-AC828) which I bought early last year and I love it a lot compared to TP-Link's load balancer. Anyway, I don't want to get rid of this router because having multiple ISPs is more reliable than using single connection and it costed me a lot. My set-up will remain almost the same - my computer and multiple RPi machines are wired to the router for work, gaming, and server lab. I'll just extend my wifi signal to everyone in the house, mostly for browsing and watching videos online. Most devices are phones, a few laptops, a digital TV, few gaming consoles, and a Google Chromecast with TV. Those are fine being wireless. What should I get to extend the wifi signal so everyone in the house can connect to the internet seamlessly? And what are your suggested/well-tested products? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Spectrum locking me out of my own router Posted: 02 Mar 2021 06:32 PM PST Hey everyone, I have Spectrum for my home internet and bought my own modem/router a while back. I am using a Motorola MG7700 and I have not had any issues until recently. I have been using it for over a year, and have not needed to log into the device for anything until last month. I couldn't log in which was odd considering I saved the credentials to the browser. I reset the device, logged in, and then reset the credentials. This week, I went to log back into the device and the same issue happened again. I can't log in so I reset the device, reset the credentials, etc. Then I waited about 10-15 minutes, and tried to sign back in and it happened AGAIN. I have to believe that Spectrum is sending some sort of signal to control the device as if it was theirs, but it is mine. Is there anything I can do here, or am I doomed to reset the device every time I need access to it? Edit for clarity: I own this router, it is not rented from Spectrum. I have changed the default login to the router. When the issue happens, I can't use the credentials that I created, or the default credentials. My only option to get back into the device is to reset by hand using the button on the back. This reoccurs whenever I go to log back into the router through a web browser. [link] [comments] |
need help choosing internet plan for 2 remote workers Posted: 02 Mar 2021 06:31 PM PST my SO and i are debating on whether we should upgrade our Comcast internet plan to either 100 Mbps or 200 Mbps. i think we should do 100 Mbps, and he says 200. Some additional factors:
which plan should we go for? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Mar 2021 06:12 PM PST Going to need help on this one. When I ping 8.8.8.8, I receive no packet loss or anything like that. Never had an issue with packet loss when pinging 8.8.8.8 In fact, that's what my router is constantly pinging. I'm in a double NAT setup, something out of my control. Cannot bridge mode the gateway. My gateway is pinging my ISP's DNS servers. Beyond my control. When I ping my ISP's DNS... 64xxxxx, I am receiving packet loss. Is this normal? Is this reason for concern? New router and modem, slower speeds? Posted: 02 Mar 2021 02:12 PM PST Hey all, after making a post in here a couple of weeks ago I took some suggestions and went with an Arris SB8200 and a TP Link AC1750 Archer A7. Currently I have the Arris connected straight to my computer, the router works enough to give off wifi so I'm trying to troubleshoot this. I called my service provider (suddenlink, activated the modem) and I at least have internet. However, I pay for 1gig, and after running a speedtest I'm getting 21Mbps, again I'm connected straight from the modem to my PC so I have the best connection I can get. I tried unplugging the modem, I tried factory resetting. Here's my status page which I couldn't access until I had factory reset the modem for whatever reason, something to do with Arris and their security measures. https://gyazo.com/c14b667afb1f26bbce7f388de4c56f5d Any insight would help, because I'm not really sure where to go from here to try and troubleshoot it. I'm not exactly the most tech savvy when it comes to modems/routers. [link] [comments] |
Gigabit switch drops Network speed from 800 Mbps-> 94 Mbps Posted: 02 Mar 2021 05:47 PM PST I have ATT fiber and have Nest Wifi at home. Due to the known issues with Nest WiFi I get only 5 Mbps speeds in my office on Wifi. So I wired my home office and when I connect my laptop (MBP) to the Ethernet port I get 800 Mbps DL. The problem comes when I introduced a new laptop (MBA) and I hardwired it by connecting a gigabit switch (TP Link TL-SG105) to the wall Ethernet port and connected the two laptops to the switch. The internet speeds drop to 94 Mbps per laptop. Do you know why this is happening? [link] [comments] |
