Some gaming laptop vs Macbook Pro M1

Some gaming laptop vs Macbook Pro M1

Some gaming laptop vs Macbook Pro M1

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 10:50 PM PST

I have an asus laptop currently with i5 8th gen, 16 gb RAM and gt1650 (4GB). I am a college student doing CS degree (actually, will be from September) and have a side job as a video editor.

I will use my laptop for coding, video and picture editing, gaming and streaming.

If I buy the macbook, I'll have better video editing (as I'll use final cut) and coding experience. But then I'll need to game and stream on my old laptop

If I buy a gaming laptop, I can do all the stuff in this laptop and probably won't need my old laptop but won't have as good of a experience editing (that is comparatively slower rendering time, I have to edit a lot btw)

Please help me decide which to buy. I am leaning more on the macbook option tbh, that is if my old pc is capable for streaming

Decent Gaming & Music Production Laptop: $600-$800

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 11:28 AM PST

I lost a bet to my little nephew - he got the grades and now I owe him a laptop.

    Side Requirements (besides the obvious):

    • Must have ethernet
    • Expandable memory (if 16gb is not in budget).
    • At least 15"
    • 60hz is fine, as long as the GPU can handle at least that.

I was originally looking at Gateway Creator Series 15.6" FHD. Maybe there's something better. Doesn't need to be latest gen intel or even intel at all.

    Thanks.

No. Recipient lives in another state, don't want to deal with possible return.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Gaming laptop, will stay at home. Weight and Touch is unimportant.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      15" +
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Max what the screen HZ can handle. If 60hz screen, need at least 60fps for GPU.

Need a general purpose laptop with some constraints

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:24 AM PST

My budget is 600-700 USD. I need nothing fancy or expensive but I have few requirements in mind which are as follows -

    1- Backlit keyboard

2- 13-14 inch screen. Don't like bigger screen or keyboard.

3- AMD Ryzen 5 (I think it is cheaper as compared to Intel counterpart?)

    4- No gaming requirement

5- At least 6 GB RAM. Would prefer more RAM but it'll be expensive.

6- Some amateur level programming and data analysis

    What are the options?

I am going to university soon and I need a new laptop

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 02:25 AM PST

The university I am studying at is opening for my first year and throughout my preparation I didn't really gave a thought of buying a new laptop until I realized that the laptop I own has a shitty battery life (3 hours max). I need a laptop that has a battery that can remain for 8 hours without recharging, can withstand multi tasking, has Windows 10 as an OS, can run some games with medium settings (war thunder to be specific, would be great if its able to run it on max settings), given the time I have until opening I can save up to $1000 (1300 if I am lucky)

also i need 8 gb ram minimum

Surface Laptop 3 i5/8GB/256 or Acer Spin 3 i7/8GB/512 at the same price? Need a quick answer

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 02:20 AM PST

Hey, we're buying direct from a distributor and can get either one at a really good price (around $600). I've seen that the Surface retails for way more money typically (nearly $1400), but the Acer has better specs in everything except for the screen.

I need it as a quick, portable laptop for some engineering stuff at university. Which would would you guys suggest? I have to decide in an hour or two so I would really appreciate advice

US music downloading/storing laptop. Budget $300

Looking for a price friendly laptop to download and store music in. I do not care about screen size/quality or battery life. I am based in the US and want to spend around $300 at most. I have seen laptops for $200 with 4GB memory and 32 eMMC flash memory but I do not know if those would be a good choice. Thank you

    New Dell Inspiron 13 7306 2-in-1 || Thinkbook 13s g2 intel?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:51 AM PST

    Hello folks,

    I hope you're doing well,

Which model of the 2 would you recommend?

The Dell has a better cpu, but I never had a 2 in 1, and I'm not sure.

Some details, if you want to suggest something:

    Country: France

    Budget: 1000 €

    Screen size: 13"

Use: Numerical analysis and modeling (not much intensive 3D stuff) Work mainly on Ubuntu

    Min requirement: 16 GB | 512 GB SSD | I5 or I7 (wouldn't say no to Ryzen 5 or 7).

I prefer to stick to my short list, but I added these details just in case.

PS: I was going for an older xps 13 model, but the RAM and the CPU were significantly slower than these 2 models. I couldn't get my hand on a latitude for a good price, so that's what I ended up with.

    Thank you and stay safe

Thank you in advance & stay safe

What could be a fast laptop for dual boot? ( Ubuntu & Windows )

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:48 AM PST

I want to to buy a laptop that I could use both Ubuntu and Windows and run fast !

I need Windows because I am a professional Photographer/Videographer and can't work without Photoshop and AdobePrime.

I have tried linux alternatives, but the cant do what I can do with un Adobe programs.

Ubuntu is the OS I prefer and like to use as I am also learning about programming. Windows is just not for me, but only for my job

What laptop could handle a dual boot under these conditions? I always want to have the best quality in my photos or videos, so Windows must be able to "fly".

I will also like the same for Ubuntu, be fast and easy to use under any condition.

    Is it really worth it?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 02:45 AM PST

I want to buy the Lenovo legion 5 with amd and a 1660ti graphics card at 4500 SAR (around 1150 USD) but I have heard that the rtx 2060 is better. The rtx version cost 5500 SAR (around 1450 USD). My question are: How much is the performance difference between the 1660ti and the rtx 2060? is it really worth the price difference?

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
It's not, it's mostly going to live in a lap or on a desk.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      Bigger is better
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      zoom, word processing
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      None

      See next
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
My S/O teaches music and acting online, so speakers that are decent quality are important to her for both work and prep work. She mostly uses zoom or other similar programs, and does basic word processing and internet. Having a good sized screen is important, SSD hard drive is nice, and quality web cam. She is a bit rough in handling her laptop, so something that is durable would be important.

    Thank you!

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes, from a reputable place.

    Performance-1, build quality-2, battery life-3, form factor-4

How important is weight and thinness to you?

It'd be nice to not have to pull a trailer around for the thing, but it doesn't matter too much.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

17 would be nice but if not possible in budget that's cool.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Lots of tabs in browsers, Heavy office use. Lots of video playback. Teams and Zoom meetings.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    -Win10, NOT S mode

-Needs a full size HDMI port and 1, if not 2+ USB ports. Ethernet port would be nice to have, but doesn't matter much.

    -8gb RAM minimum

-It'd be good to have a decent webcam for Teams and Zoom meetings.

I'm a freshman Automotive Management BBA student. I've had a couple of shitty $100 refurb laptops that didn't last long and I need some kind of laptop.. I built my PC but I don't really know jack about laptops. Below is a link to my desktop's specs for an idea of what I'm used to, in case it helps. I will probably get a protection plan, but I want this unit to last a long, long time. Thanks in advance and sorry for being picky.

Laptops for web dev and UI/UX. Need opinions. Thank you !

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 01:43 AM PST

    Sooo here goes...

Me and my fiancee want to sign up to a coding academy/bootcamp in the coming months. No later than May. We need two laptops. Was eyeing some Thinkbooks/Thinkpads but those within our budget are mostly AMD Ryzen based not Intel.

I have bad experiences with the AMD based systems my previous two desktop being AMD based (A Ryzen 5 2600 and an A6 APU something something can't remember exactly...FM2 socket). By bad experiences I mean driver crashes, slowdowns at random, windows freezing for no reason, screen going black...stuff like that. The build were full AMD (CPU+GPU+Chipset) and these laptops are the same. Ryzen 3/5 with Vega graphics.

We could go Intel but that would stretch the budget quite a bit.

    The builds are ThinkPad E15 G2 20T8002LRI (Ryzen 3/8GB RAM/256GB SSD/Vega 8),Huawei MateBook D15 (Ryzen 5 3500/8gb ram/256ssd/Vega8)

    ThinkBook 15 G2 ARE 20VG006CRM (Ryzen3 4300U/8GB/256SSD/Vega8)

    ThinkBook 20VG006ERM Ryzen 5 4500U/8GB/256SSD

For Intel we think we can go with an i5 10th gen most likely with the same amount of ram and ssd.

Are the Ryzen3/5 faster/slower than the i3/i5 equivalents ? Do the AMD laptops perform better in Linux ? Or the Intel ones ? Sorry for wall of text but these two laptops will be our bread and butter for the next 2-3 years so we need to make a good decision.

    Thank you !

USA, Under $750, Laptop for graduate school computational astrophysics research projects

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 08:49 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

750 USD (can go a little higher if there is a compelling reason), USA

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No, I prefer new.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance is most preferred since this will be my research laptop for computational physics
projects. Good battery life is preferred. I am indifferent to build quality (you can decide what is
best considering everything else in the form). I do NOT want a 2 and 1 form factor.

    • How important are weight and thinness to you?

Very important. I will be walking around my graduate school campus with the laptop in my
    bookbag.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

As mentioned before, this laptop is intended to be my research laptop. I intend to run MESA (a 1D modern radiation hydrodynamics code with a wide array of applications for computational stellar astrophysics), a couple of other computational physics programs and codes, and some IDEs and data processing frameworks for general programming.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I will not be gaming with this laptop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Two USB slots (3.0) and a headphone jack are all that's needed.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

The laptop should have a 64-bit processor and 8 GB RAM minimum (upgradable RAM). I require Windows because I want to dual boot it to Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. This is critical for me because the computational physics codes I plan to use work ideally with Linux. Additionally, I want to install certain apps on my windows side.

What are the best laptops for engineering students?

Selecting the Best Laptop for Engineering Students

These days, many laptops are released every other week and their specifications also seem to overlap with each other. In these ever-evolving times, it's very easy to make mistakes on this expensive investment. Computers and gadgets are expensive; and for engineering students, they're even more expensive. In this article, you'll get:

    1. My top picks for the best laptops for engineering students
    2. The most important requirements you should be considering when purchasing your laptop
    3. A full description of my top choices and a long list of other recommendations.

If I had purchased my laptop based strictly on price and not focused on any other features, I would have made a huge mistake in purchasing a gadget that was going to be with me for at least four years.

Laptops for engineering students and graduates should be fast, efficient, and versatile!

So what do "fast", "efficient" and "versatile" mean? There are these minimum technical requirements that should be met if you are considering a laptop for engineering school. I have broken down these specifications down below.

As if going into an engineering school is already not difficult enough, you have to hold up with the burning load of technological and creative requirements every day. I only had a desktop when I first joined the college to study mechanical engineering. I thought it would be enough — but, boy oh boy, it was not. I had to stay up late in college to finish the reports, do the drawings, then submit them the same day.

I had to pick a computer that was portable, that met all my engineering degree requirements, and also gave me options on the entertainment and sometimes gaming side. With my friends to guide me and a little help from Google, I managed to pick some good ones.

    My Top Choices

Here you'll find the Best Laptops for Engineering Students

    Laptop dilemma, need some help

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 11:07 PM PST

    I have a dilemma.

I want a laptop, and I want to play light games on it such as Minecraft multiplayer/singeplayer, Gmod and possibly something else. I also am going to watch alot of movies on netflix and youtube on it when having it on my lap, Even some fotball and other sports so the screen has to be good.

I have come to the conclussion that if I am gojng to get a gaming laptop the best option for me is the lenovo legion 5. The downsides of the laptop is convenience, it is quite heavy at 2,45kg, have a thing sticking out on the backside for ports. But everything else is really good.

    My requarements are as follows:
    - Needs to manage minecraft and gmod pretty well
    - It would be nice to have 120Hz screen or more, but I have not found any non gaming laptop with this
\ - It has to be 15'6 inch

    - Really really good heat management so that I can have it on my lap when watching movies and so it doesn't get uncomfortable when playing light games or browsing.

    - I am going to use ethernet every time Iam going to play games. Idk if it has to have ehternet, maybe I can use some kind of adapter or something.

    - Good keyboard, doesn't really care about the trackpad

    - I want okay battery life of at least 5-6 hours of watching netflix or youtube.

    - 16GB is also requared.

    • good screen and fan noice would preferebly not get to loud

The only other option instead of the lenovo legion 5 that I have come up with is that I buy a non gaming laptop which has everying of my requariements but lacks the 120Hz +, RGB lighing, and good graphic card and more. If I do that I could buy a screen that has 120Hz+ and keyboard so that I can have everything I want. Maybe that will be quite anoying though.

My price limit are between 10000-14000 swedish Crowns
    Or 1208,44 - 1691,82 Dollars

    What do you guys think??

US $300 laptop for storing/downloading music

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 10:28 PM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**

$300 budget buying in the US

    Refurbished/used laptops are welcomed

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.)

Do not care about form factor

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Weight and thinness do not matter

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

13 inch or smaller would be ideal but if not possible it's fine.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No, only running internet browser and iTunes.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      None

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've seen laptops for $200 that have 4GB of memory and 32 eMMC memory would that be good enough?

Looking for laptop for gaming and music production!

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 10:06 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:**Willing to spend up to $1000 USD
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?**Yeah but prefer not to.
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?**Build quality and performance are most important.
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?**Not very
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.**N/A
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.**Some AAA game titles as they come out but mostly indie games. Some photoshop/graphic design for work, I use clip studio paint. Finally, I use REAPER for a DAW (music production), this is the most RAM intensive.
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?**I generally don't mind playing on low graphics settings to make games run better, IDK. Eventually I'd like to try Borderlands 3 since I bought it but it doesn't run well on my laptop, but I don't mind running at lower settings.
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?**I have a 1TB hard drive as a separate drive that I purchased and plugged into my current laptop. It has everything on it. The future laptop I'm looking to upgrade to must have a space for me to plug this 1TB hard drive into. I think it's 2.5" SATA but I could be wrong; it's whatever the industry standard is.
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.**My current laptop is an Acer Aspire which I'm very happy with, though the screen is beginning to break as one of the hinges broke. I'd keep using it indefinitely were it not for this. The colors on this screen were never perfect and it'd be nice to have a screen that actually does have correct colors for my graphic design stuff at work. I also am a little rough despite my best efforts, so a laptop that isn't fragile would be nice. I got this Acer Aspire to last me about 4 years. (Edit) I found this one, is there better i should look for or is this good? & did laptops get more expensive over quarantine? because this claims to be a $1k laptop going for $1.5k on newegg.

Main description is written as the questionnaire's last question!

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

      USA.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
As an architecture student and teacher, I'll be needing to carry my laptop everywhere. That said, I'm looking for a laptop with a fairly small size and light weight. I would also like to play high-end videogames, but I don't need to run them at the highest settings. I currently have an HP OMEN w033dx (17.3'in, 6.25lbs/2.8kg) which fails to deliver on either portability (is massive and excessively heavy) and performance (will overheat and drop FPS on even the simplest games).

    Thanks for your time!

    USA, $300 Budget 13-14" laptop

    Posted: 23 Feb 2021 09:25 PM PST

I am looking to pickup a budget laptop. I don't need anything over extravagant since all I really do is browse the internet, emails, netflix and social media crap... I don't do any gaming or designing etc... I would like something either 13 or 14" inch screen for being more mobile. I don't mind something that is a year or two old -- I figured being open to something slightly used would give me more options to choose from. Last year I worked for a company for a short period of time and they issued me a Lenovo and I really liked that laptop, particularly the feel of the keys when typing. Anyhow, any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
