M1 MacBook Air Vs Thinkpad T14s Posted: 05 Feb 2021 01:33 AM PST I'm looking to buy a laptop and my two choices are the Thinkpad T14s and the M1 MacBook Air. They are both around the same price but the ThinkPad will be much cheaper with Lenovo's discounts. My main concerns with the Thinkpad is the battery life and performance but don't know if it will be an issue. I also am a long time Thinkpad user and the track point and keyboard is a key feature for me. I'm mainly going to be using it for school and for Java programming and some light gaming like League of Legends, Gta V and Minecraft. Compatibility and the ability to run Linux is another big feature with the Thinkpad. The M1 MacBooks features for me is the portability and battery life that the M1 macs can provide. My problems with the Mac is the incompatibility with Linux and windows programs. I also plan to keep it for 5 or more years before upgrading. So which do you think will be the better purchase for me? Suggest a convertible laptop for a computer engineering student Posted: 05 Feb 2021 01:28 AM PST Didn't fill out the questionnaire cuz I'm not familiar with all the technical terms, i will be starting college in a month or two and need a laptop. My major is going to be computer engineering and i honestly don't know what to expect from a laptop cuz i haven't used one in ages (technically i haven't used one ever , cuz we had a pc that is well fit to go to a museum now). My budget is around $700 to $900 (USD), I am not open to refurbished/reused, i don't know if they sell convertibles around this price range but if they do i would prefer that, and since i'll be carrying it all the time a light weight one would be better. I have done a little digging and found acer swift 3 and hp envy x360. The first one is not convertible so I'm leaning towards the second one. Is that a good choice? Any other laptops that match my needs (touch screen)? What should i expect from my college course? I'd be grateful for any help. Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
Lenovo ThinkPad X395 vs. Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 Posted: 04 Feb 2021 07:18 PM PST I'm a UK 3D Design student looking to buy a reliable, well performing laptop that has decent colour accuracy, a nice feeling keyboard and can handle some light gaming (Ultrakill, Dusk, Ion Fury, Stardew Valley). After some searching I've found that I've been gravitating more towards ThinkPads because I hear their reliability is solid and I have found some with decent specs for less than their retail price. But I've also been told that the IdeaPad Flex 5 is a good bang for my buck because of Lenovo build quality touch screen, the specs and the 2-in-1 capability. However I'm not too fussed about the bells and whistles, I just want something that I can pay for once and not have to worry about it being obsolete in a few years.

Need a small laptop with decent specs Posted: 05 Feb 2021 12:46 AM PST I would be carrying this laptop around different office buildings and outside often, so I want something small and lightweight. Also I'm doing coding so a decent CPU is a must. Screen size is not a big deal as I have a monitor in my office. Requirements:

M1 MacBook Air vs MSI Modern 15 i7? Posted: 04 Feb 2021 08:31 PM PST Hi! I'm planning to do a twitch streaming for watercolor drawing. I'm thinking to stream with my Canon G7X mark II and my samsung galaxy note 10 lite camera. My budget is $1000 - $1200, and I get recommendations to buy either M1 Mac air or MSI modern 15 i7. I do prefer the macbook air, because it's small and lightweight, but I'm afraid the 8 RAM won't be enough. I use laptop mainly for video editing or Photoshop, no playing games or movie. Here is the comparison of the 2 laptops: https://windowstip.com/compare/msi-modern-15-a11x-vs-macbook-air-m1-2020/ Thank you, really appreciate any recommendations! [link] [comments] |
1500 US ~ Looking for everyday laptop for schooling and medium to heavy gaming Posted: 04 Feb 2021 11:33 PM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
No
Very important. I'd like something particularly not "old-fashioned" and looking more towards sleek and a thin nice looking appearance.
15.6 in
Photoshop, Genshin Impact, Final fantasy, tomb raider, medium to heavy gaming
For settings, id like high at 60fps
Good keyboard, webcam, 1080p, 1tb storage, doesn't overheat a lot, and not obnoxiously loud fans
I stick to laptops for their portability for school, travel, or work needs but at the same time Id really love something I could play heavier games on and enjoy a good resolution as well. The most important things for me would be the design, decent storage size, webcam, and how fast it runs for gaming. The other things I won't mind as much [link] [comments] |
Posted: 04 Feb 2021 07:28 PM PST I want to buy a laptop for my 8yo son Corona home schooling. I have narrowed it down between the Acer Swift 3 (Ryzen 7 4700U, Vega 8, 16ram) or Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 (Ryzen 7 4800H, GTX1650ti, 8ram). My wife (a teacher) will also be using it for her school-related works. I am buying it for the long run. Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Light laptop for digital marketing Posted: 05 Feb 2021 04:36 AM PST Hey. I work with digital marketing, and I'm looking for a new laptop. Im searching for a laptop that is easy to carry and not too heavy due to travelling a lot. It also has to be quite powerful, because i usually have a lot of tabs and programs open at once, and it would also be nice if i could play a light game sometimes. Right now i have a 13inch screen which i think is a bit to small, and i would like to try something a little larger. Budget is 1200$-1700$ [link] [comments] |
I am looking for a laptop to bring me through the rest of trade school online Posted: 05 Feb 2021 04:28 AM PST I am a fairly light user, but I need to upgrade for trade school online. My current laptop would likely be able to struggle though it but the battery is shot graphics card is starting to go after 12 years of use and I do not wish to have to scramble to replace it during my term. I currently have a Toshiba satellite C650. I have been very satisfied with the laptop I have now, I'm concerned with reliability at this point and would be happy with some of the modern features available in today's laptops like a ssd and maybe a slightly quieter fan. I have seen the Acer swift 3 and think it could be a contender. The Asus Vivobook looks alright but my girlfriend has had Q/C issues with them before. I am super ignorant on current tech since i haven't been in the market for so long, so anyone able to share some good insight will be greatly appreciated.

Looking to buy a laptop, feeling a little discouraged. (Canada) Posted: 05 Feb 2021 12:29 AM PST I'm looking to finally buy a laptop after going years without (currently not a student, but looking to apply this September). I'd always been the kind of person to go to Best Buy every 2-3 years once my previous laptop, while usable, became too frustrating to use regularly. I'd find a handful of Acer and HP models for anywhere from $280-$350, pick one, and be good to go for another 2-3 years. Now, I find myself very intimidated browsing, and definitely discouraged not seeing anything promising within those price ranges I was so used to. This could very well be because I kinda missed every sale opportunity from Back to School to New Years haha. I'm floundering a bit financially, still chilling in quarantine part 2, but definitely felt like I could afford a decent $300 computer. I see people asking for cheap general use laptop suggestions, then saying their budget is like $700-$800. Am I just extremely out of touch about what things should cost, or does that still seem pretty expensive? Totally cool if it's the former, just means I'll have to save up for a while! Secondly, can anyone suggest a nice laptop that's max $500, or tell me what a reasonable expectation/option would be? It doesn't need all sorts of bells and whistles, I'd just be browsing/possibly accessing online class material, writing, maybe downloading little rpg games, definitely nothing intense or crazy. Thank you for reading! [link] [comments] |
Lenovo Legion 5 or Eluktronics Mag 15? Posted: 05 Feb 2021 04:14 AM PST What I want the laptop for: I want the laptop for light gaming such as minecraft PVP (hypixel) but the option to maybe play little more demanding games in the future but I won't probably. Also love to watch youtube, Netflix and more, so the screen has to be good, but most importantly the laptop has to stay cool so that I can have it on my lap when watching movies. And also stay cool when gaming. What it has to have: 15'6 inch display, 144Hz, 16GB Ram, at least 5 hours of battery when watching movies, really good cooling, ethernet Should I go for the Lenovo Legion 5 or Eluktronics Mag 15? Or maybe other laptops?. Keep in mind that heat is the first priority, So that the underside of the laptop stays cool when watching movies and the keys stay cool when gaming. [link] [comments] |
Speedy & long lasting - $1700-2000 AUD Posted: 04 Feb 2021 05:25 PM PST Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1800 AUD purchasing in Australia Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? In this order:
How important is weight and thinness to you? Ideally lightweight (thickness not so important), but doesn't have to be a featherweight. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 13-14" Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Maybe light gaming, (Jackbox, Binding of Isaac, Terraria maybe?) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Nothing serious. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? A fingerprint reader would be clutch, but not necessary. I'm more concerned if the keyboard/touchpad are notably bad than notably good, I'm not writing a novel on it. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I purchased a (Clevo) Metabox L140MU, very excited about the 11gen i7 processor, 16GB RAM and boasted battery life. I got it in December and it was not able to hold a charge when sleeping. Returned on warranty and got another faulty product. Currently waiting for full refund and shopping for a replacement in the meantime. Eyeing the ASUS Zenbook UX425 (11 gen i7, 16GB RAM from Kong) but not 100% convinced the battery will be good enough. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |

Looking for a 2 in 1 for studying Posted: 04 Feb 2021 03:28 PM PST I have recently started to look into getting a 2 in 1 for studying. I want it to be a 2 in 1 so that I can take notes and maths with a stylus which I will be doing basically every day. I will also use it to type long essays so the keyboard will have to be decent. Seeing as I am going to be using it a lot I would prefer the battery life to be at least average so that I don't have to charge it a lot. I have come across the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 2 in 1 Black edition with 1080p screen and the HP envy x360 2 in 1 with ryzen 7 chip (I will also buy the HP rechargeable tilt pen or if someone suggests another better pen that works with it then I would be happy to hear). I am eligible for student discounts for both of these laptops which makes the price of the Dell £990 and the HP with the pen £922, this puts them inside my budget comfortably. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
UK, budget of £1000
No I would rather a new laptop
Has to be a 2 in 1 with solid build quality to survive constant carrying around. Has to have good performance to be able to multitask to a good ability. I also don't mind paying a bit more for a laptop that will run smoothly and fast, so better performance is something that is quite important for me even if I am not going to excessively ise the full capabilities. Also has to have a battery life that preferably lasts the whole day of studying, not excessive use of demanding programs.
Has to be light enough to carry in a backpack, but weight and thinness isn't a massive issue for me.
Would like it to be 13 or 14 inches, I don't have a preference between these
Maybe some very low level graphics games, but not a problem if it can't run any games at all. Not any video/photo editing.
If any games then on very low graphics, but if I can't play games that is fine.
Good keyboard is important as I will type a lot. Also, has to have touchscreen with pen support. Also good build quality as I will carry it around and use it a lot.
As mentioned above the 2 laptops I have looked at in detail, I have a student discount for both which puts them both in my budget. If any laptops are just over the £1000 price range then let me know and I can see if I can get a student discount for them. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Laptop for triple monitor setup Posted: 05 Feb 2021 03:02 AM PST I have 3 monitors, one is 1440p 144hz, two are 1080p60. I need a laptop that can run all three, max resolution and refresh rate. I can use a docking station if necessary. Should have 16GB RAM and at least 4c/8t. Should be thin and light, not looking for a gaming brick. Any brand, price max 1500€ [link] [comments] |

Deciding between 2020 ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14 and 2021 ASUS ROG Zephyrus G15 Posted: 04 Feb 2021 04:06 PM PST Hi there, This comparison was featured several days ago by another Redditor but didn't receive a response, and I'm having the same debate as to which laptop is best for my needs. I'm currently deciding between the following two options: I'm looking to use this primarily as a music production workstation with secondary uses for graphics editing, remote desktop, and a bit of scientific computing (mostly GIS-related tasks). I do NOT plan to do any gaming with this machine, and hence I understand that the GPU in both of these is probably overkill but, in my research, it has been difficult to find a similarly spec'd laptop with a lesser GPU at a reasonable price. I like the form factor and professional aesthetic combined with powerful processing capabilities in both units. My main concern is future-proofing, as it takes quite a bit of effort to transfer over all my projects and software licenses from one unit to another, so I would ideally like for this to last me 6-7 years. The upgraded screen in the 2021 G15 is definitely a plus, but isn't necessarily a make or break deal for me. I already have that unit on pre-order but am tempted to cancel and save myself $650, even though I've been waiting patiently for the new Ryzen 5000 Can anyone offer any advice on whether they think the price difference is justified in terms of preventing the need to upgrade again sooner than necessary? Thanks in advance for any help [link] [comments] |

Posted: 04 Feb 2021 06:07 AM PST Questionnaire answer below. Hey y'all. So I recently got a refund on my Acer Predator Helios 300 from 2019 due to it having several hardware issues and repairs taking an exceptionally long time (into the months with no progress). I originally bought it on a sale for about $2300, but I believe the normal price was $2500. This was the ideal outcome for me as now I view it as an opportunity to spend around the same amount of money for a more powerful machine. Here is a link to the original one I bought. https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/laptops-&-notebooks/gaming-laptops/87510-nh.q9vsa.002-rg0 I did a LOT of research comparing laptops and looking at top 10 sites and stuff when I bought it, and that computer came up a lot due to the high price vs performance ratio, which I value. I'm not sure how much things have changed since then, but I believe it's likely that there are likely some better upgrades around the same price point. I'm also not against building a laptop using a website I heard of called "Metabox", though I have zero experience with this and don't know if it's more expensive or whatever. Would like advice. I'll certainly be doing research myself on this like I did before, but even back then, I was getting assistance from every place I could. I'd really appreciate your input. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
