I have seen that ubanto sends ur data to some company for some advertising purposes. Can anyone please tell me which is more private? And what key differences does each have in terms of programming? Posted: 01 Feb 2021 11:22 AM PST I'm trying to make the switch to Linux with dual-booting but I'm having some difficulties! I have a Laptop with two drives, a 256GB NVMe SSD and a 500GB SATA SSD. I used GParted to copy the 256GB to the 500GB, then installed Ubuntu to the NVMe drive. But now my laptop boots straight into Ubuntu! No grub menu. When I try to boot into Windows through the boot menu, it brings up a blue screen error saying my startup is corrupted or something like that. I don't even know where to start in trying to fix this. Should I try to add GRUB now and see if I can get it to boot into Windows? Is there a way to check if booting into my windows drive is even possible? I wanted this to be a dual-boot system. Use the ps aux Command in Linux Posted: 01 Feb 2021 01:29 PM PST |
Posted: 01 Feb 2021 01:13 PM PST I had an Lenovo Flex 5 I purchased in 2017 for around $1300USD that was stolen so I was thinking of maybe buying used since my budget is significantly less now. Id be using it for Web development (machine and deep Learning ) potentially within the next year. I wont be using the device for gaming really well maybe a couple light titles and exclusively for Linux OS as I'm trying to move completely away from Windows to FOSS ill distro hop Ubuntu, POP, Manjaro, MX, Mint ill be distro hopping for a few months. I was looking at Arch Wiki or Hardware compatibility and noticed the P14(s) and E15 wasn't listed but I'm not sure why not though other Candidates are the (T480 T495 T14 )seems like the s(slim) versions you trade off weight for processing power. P-series seemed great Currently way over my budget even used this point. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated Weight is a non factor 16GB DDR4 1920 x 1080 or better if possible 10th gen i71021u vs i5 1061u can you even tell the difference? I've read that Nvidia is seemingly anti Linux so how does that work with the GPUs? are their certain models that reject Linux does it matter if its dedicated or integrated.? I've Also noticed issued with trackpads still being an issue listed on Wiki Arch page "Touchpad is problematic. By default, if you hold the thumb over the button area, the pointer will not move. Once the system is installed, the problem disappears when using KDE, while GNOME still exhibits the issue. In GNOME, use the following to fix the problem: xinput set-prop 'SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad' 'libinput Click Method Enabled' 1 0 Even after doing this, the mouse pointer still jumps around when clicking the button sometimes. Current systemd v245 contains broken hwdb entry that sets invalid aspect ratio for the touchpad making it behave strangely." I 'm not certain how up to date Arch WIKI page is I see there are fixes but I noticed its affecting multiple models 480,480s,490,490s ect same goes for thermal throttling, Power save sleep modes. some issues have patches and work arounds for the vast majority but not all. How to install something when there's no package? Posted: 01 Feb 2021 10:54 AM PST I'm a new Ubuntu user, and since my laptop is ~4 yrs old, it doesn't automatically adjust screen brightness. I wondered if there might be a tool that would do this for me, and after some googling I found this, which as an added bonus can control my (normally manually toggled) keyboard backlight: https://github.com/FedeDP/Clight But the instructions are just way above my head. I'm familiar with the basics of the terminal and have successfully done some installs and various other tasks in there before. So like .... how do I actually build this program on my computer? Oh and: I'm using Ubuntu 20.10, 64-bit, on a Thinkpad x270. P.S. I'm new to this sub too, so I apologize if I'm breaking any rules or norms, and I would appreciate if you let me know. Backdating the Kernel. Running Ubuntu 20.04, 5.4.0-65-generic Posted: 01 Feb 2021 11:36 AM PST There's a problem I've found with xorg/x11... I'm getting a frozen screen: the mouse still moves, the cpu is clearly working hard, but no response on the screen. I think this happened after upgrading my linux kernel to 5.4.0-65-generic. Accoring to here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze One of the bits of advice is to go back to an earlier kernel. But I don't have any older kernels installed. I'd like to install an earlier kernel alongside this one, and I've been doing a lot of googling, but there's not a lot of consistency in the answers and most of them are from many years ago... My question is: What is the best current method to try to go back a few kernels? (Alternatively, I'm thinking of trying 20.10 to see if that solves the problem.) [link] [comments] |
Does installing themes launcher affect performance? Posted: 01 Feb 2021 07:46 AM PST I'm new to Manjaro (XCFE), and I found a video which shows how to customize the look of the GUI to a whole other level than I expected. It makes use of several themes and launcher (eg. Panther launcher). Do these things (heavily) affect performance? [link] [comments] |
Laptop speakers sound output far lower un linux mint compared to windows. Posted: 01 Feb 2021 11:17 AM PST I recently installed linux mint as a dual boot with windows 10 on my laptop (hp spectre x360) and I noticed whenever I watch videos on it using the speakers the volume level and maximum volume are far lower than those when im using windows. When im using headphones this is not a problem so it seems like there is a problem with the speakers. I think I'm possibly missing some drivers but i'm not sure. [link] [comments] |

Super slow boot time with Ubuntu Posted: 01 Feb 2021 01:51 PM PST Hey all! As soon as I press the power button and my screen shows activity, it takes 3 whole minutes until Ubuntu prompts me for my password. After I enter it, it takes another minute until my desktop is fully rendered. How can I fix this? When I was running windows, the whole process took less than a minute. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2021 04:19 AM PST I'm using deb based distros (mainly Feren OS / Kubuntu) and Manjaro. My knowledge of Linux is basic, I don't know how to compile code or something like that, I want a Wifi Adapter that will either work out of the box or can be driver-installed with a few steps/commands. I'm interested in this model , TP Link Archer T9UH, the v2 version ; https://www.tp-link.com/us/home-networking/usb-adapter/archer-t9uh/ The site offeres drivers in Linux, but I have no idea if they work. Should I buy that, or do you have something else to suggest? The above adapter is in 45-50 Euros Price Range. [link] [comments] |

"graphics tablet" setting doesn't do anything on linux mint, pls help. Posted: 01 Feb 2021 08:50 AM PST I have a wacom intuos tablet that I use to draw. The tablet worked on windows without any issues. When I switched to linux, the tablet started working immediately without the need to install any drivers. All features function normally, krita registers pen pressure and alike, no issue there. However, the "graphics tablet" setting does nothing, and I wanted to configure the buttons on my tablet. Right now I don't know how to do it, since the only setting that seems responsible for it doesn't do anything. After clicking on it the mouse cursor changes to the loading cursor for a short while, then goes back to normal and nothing else happens. How do I fix it? Or how do I work around it to bind different keys to my tablet buttons? When I tried turning on the setting without the tablet connected, a menu appeared with the information "no tablet detected, please plug in or turn on your graphics tablet". When I plug in the tablet the menu disappears and nothing else happens. [link] [comments] |

opencolorio conflicts with opencolorio1 Posted: 31 Jan 2021 11:41 PM PST So I use Arch (BTW) and tried to run an update with 'sudo pacman -Syyu', I got the error ":: opencolorio1 and opencolorio are in conflict", the wired thing is that when I run "pacman -Q | grep opencolorio" it seems that I don't have an opencolorio1 package installed. What should I do? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Feb 2021 09:59 AM PST So I'm trying to adjust the priority of a process for my GPU, I know that I can use nice and renice to change the nice value but that seems to only affect CPU priorities. Any alternative or workaround for MS office, Photoshop, Sketchup, VRay and Acrobat Pro? Posted: 01 Feb 2021 09:22 AM PST I have tried searching for these on internet but the alternatives available on Linux is not much helpful. These are the only software which are making me dual boot with shitty Windows10. As far as I understood by searching online Wine doesn't properly support them as they are pretty complex. I have GTX1650 with 16GB RAM, Is it possible to run these software inside the Virtual Box? [link] [comments] |
connection failed (ssh with bitvise/putty) Posted: 01 Feb 2021 09:21 AM PST The error: Connection Failed. FlowSocketConnector: failed to connect to target address. Windows error 10060. A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection because connected host has failed to respond. ——— I installed ubuntu on an oracle virtual box, and I attempted to connect to the ssh through bitvise and also putty. In both instances I received the same error. I attempted many fixes but with no results whatsoever. I double-checked my IP address and my available ports; I made sure the ssh is enabled and active; I turned off windows firewall; I increased the timer in my bitvise options to 10 seconds, and at one instance to 25 seconds. I restarted the ssh and I also restarted my router as a last resort. I would highly appreciate any other suggestions/ or further clarifications on what could be the problem. PS. I'm a newbie. It was yesterday when I learned what a port was. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2021 05:22 AM PST Is there any graphical software available in ubuntu to create a bootable usb from iso? Redshift went crazy, uninstalled, installed again but I can't find it in the applications menu Posted: 31 Jan 2021 07:07 PM PST Hi started using linux mint (first time using linux) this week, redshift was working properly untill i decided to open the application from the app menu when the screen suddenly started flickering between different colors so I uninstalled the application from there but the flickering was still going on until y restarted my computer. After all of that I decided to reinstall but when I looked for it in the software manager it showed up there as installed, so I removed and installed again, and after doing that I don't have a way to access the application.
