    Unifi pro vs regular switch

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 05:15 PM PST

I have been searching. And can't seem to find the differences that would be gained from buying the pro version of ubiquiti's latest line of switches?

Can anyone provide a resource for viewing or reading?

    Thank you

Home Remodel and network wiring questions.

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 05:34 PM PST

New to this and looking for advice.

I am completely remodeling a home to blend my girlfriends and my family in. There will be both her and I working from home as well as 4 girls using the network for school, wireless phones and tablets as well as TV plus I am looking at installing PoE cameras. I have the walls and ceilings completely open and am looking at hardwiring where all desk are and for all TVs. I have a few questions and any advice in general is welcome. I also want it future proof. This will hopefully be our forever home. I've done a lot of research but have not found clear answers yet.

    1) Cat6 or Cat6a? 2) solid in wall or stranded? 3) shielded or non? 4) how many jacks per location? 5) should I run any RG6?

Any and all recommendations are welcome?

    Thanks in advance!

UPS to backup Low power hardware for 10+ hours

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 07:34 PM PST

There was a planned maintenance in the place where I live recently and I was hoping to see most of my hardware run unaffected for most (or all) of it thanks to Cyberpower CP1500EPFCLCD.

The hardware is a desktop PC in sleep mode, wifi router and ISP's receiver. I measured it at the wall and they consume less than 10 W, when I connect them to the UPS, the reading on the powermeter is about 20 W. The UPS sadly ran out of juice 2 hours into the outage.

I expect similar outages in the near future, so I would like some advice on what UPS to get to just back up this equipment for at least 10 hours?

How can I connect to my computer at the office from my home?

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 04:19 PM PST

I am trying to access an SQL QB on our server. I can connect to the VPN and connect to it using its LAN 192.168.x.x IP address, but I am wondering if there is a way to connect to the computer (SQL DB) using its public IP address without having to go setup a bunch of stuff.

Need to connect to network right after installing windows

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 05:42 PM PST

I've just finished downloading windows and my network is not connecting. I troubleshooted it and it says to "install a driver for your network adapter". The thing is when I go to device manager and go under network adapter my Ethernet cable Is not there just the ones that are already there. Under other devices I see "Ethernet Controller" I already tried uninstalling it and restarting my computer and it didn't work. So it seems like I need to update my drivers for the Ethernet cable but it's not showing up. What do I do?

Internet stopped working on just my PC (other devices fine)

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 04:40 PM PST

    Hey all,

I was working on my PC when the internet just dropped dead. It's not the network because my macbook and phone can still connect, no problem. I tried restarting the PC and the router, but no luck.

When I connect via ethernet, it says: "Unidentified network, no connection." When I connect via wifi it says ""no internet, secured." I even tried connecting to my phone's hotspot, but got the same message.

When I run the Windows Network Diagnostics tool on the wifi, it says it doesn't have a valid IP configuration.

I also updated both the ethernet and wifi adapter drivers (downloaded them off my laptop), but still no luck.

I also have a second Verizon router upstairs (closer to my desk) which has never given me any issues. But last week I setup a Netgear mesh wifi extender downstairs to cover a deadspot in the house. I suspected this may have been the issue, but it hasn't given me any problems in the last 7 days. And unplugging hasn't changed anything.

Any suggestions? I'm not sure if this is a hardware issue since the Wifi adapter is built into the motherboard. Or if it's something weird happening with my router. But I really need to get this fixed. Verizon Fios is my provider.

    My specs

    • Windows 10 Home version 2004
    • Gigabyte Z390 AORUS PRO WIFI
    • Intel i9 9900k
    • EVGA GeForce 2080 Super RTX
    • Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 64 GB
    • Samsung 970 EVO plus 1TB

    Many thanks

Should I get the NETGEAR CM1200 or the ARRIS SURFboard SB8200?

For my COX gigblast internet service. I can't decide which is more reliable. I don't mind about the pricing.

How do you think about MoCA+WiFi extender

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 03:58 PM PST

After did lots of research, we only found very limited such product. Both from Actiontec. WCB3000N and WCB6200Q.

WCB3000N is very cheap, but the Wi-Fi is only 802.11N. even older than 802.11AC.

WCB6200Q is 802.11AC, but the price is too expensive.

Does anyone really buy these products?

Maybe a cheaper 11AC product is good option or Wi-Fi 6 version.

Also we can see someone is using MoCA Adapter plus Wi-Fi Mesh products, such as Google Wi-Fi Mesh. The issue is also the price.

Is that a good option to integrate MoCA and Wi-Fi Mesh into a single box?

    COX 1000 to 500 question.

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 07:38 PM PST

Currently paying for Gigablast, but too far from main ITN's to actually pull 1K even hard lined in on 10G switch. Always getting JUST around 480 sometimes spiking to 600. I have a nighthawk CAX80 after getting rid of the panoramic modem.

I am not sure how it works on the host side. But if I were to drop my paid speed to 500 instead of 1000, would my rough 400-500 mbps speed also go down because of the ratio, or would I be maximizing my speed? Not so concerned about 'eventually' getting giga, 500 is still plenty if not still overkill.

Just worried if I request to go into the lower tier, I will cut my speeds down.

    • not many devices running on network at the same time, bandwidth is not an issue at most it's a smart TV and downloading a game on steam. 2 users at most

Trying to forward a range of ports but a few remain closed. Google Fiber/Google Wifi

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 07:20 PM PST

I got a range of ports I wanted to open. All but one (9984) actually are open when I check here: https://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

I have no clue why that happens. I've reset my internet and it still isn't working. If anyone could point me in the right direction, that'd be amazing

Networking noob and I need some advice regarding a consistent reliable home connection please!

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 06:53 PM PST

So for the past week I've been having insane lag in Warzone on PS5 and even during some of my online zoom classes.. which promoted me to dig deep into the issue. After browsing this sub for about 2 minutes I realized that my cox provided modem/router gateway is a piece of shit and likely why I get 50% wifi strength in my room (gateway is in the kitchen). So my question is.. I want to buy my own new modem and router separately, and I also have plans to use an Ethernet cable instead of wifi for my PS5. My ISP is Cox and I have the 500mb plan. What are some decent & compatible modems and routers out there and what other details do I need to look out for in case I plan on upgrading to gigsblast in the near future? Thank you in advance!

    Need Help Understanding

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 06:40 PM PST

When running a speedtest, I am able to see 900+Mbps down on a gigabit connection on my eth2 port, which is connected to my network switch as a trunk port, but see 15Mbps on on the WAN port, eth0, which is connected to my Fios ONT. But when the speedtest runs the upload, I get 600+Mbps in eth2 Rx and also see 600+ Mbps on eth0 Tx.

    SpeedTest upload: https://imgur.com/DlEumn6

    SpeedTest download: https://imgur.com/HC1Wp4r

So I'm stuck on why the WAN is only showing less than 1/10th of the speed that is coming in to my network, but accurate on the way out.

    Router is a ubiquiti ER-X.

My PC's ethernet connection lags when other devices are using Wifi

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 06:38 PM PST

So, I currently have 100/10 fiber internet running to a Netgear Nighthawk router. My PC is connected directly through ethernet and is the only device that is not on wifi. I play a lot of CSGO and have found that my connection will lag really bad when my wife is using the wifi (either Netflix, Youtube, TikTok, etc). I can go from a 30ms ping to having over 300ms ping, which will randomly stabilize for 10-15 seconds before spiking again. I cannot pinpoint when it occurs, as sometimes she uses her phone, sometimes her laptop, or a combination. Besides the video streaming I cannot identify what could be causing such bad lag. I have not enabled QoS but am considering trying this to alleviate the issue. It's odd because we are the only 2 people in the home and there are never more than 5 devices total on our network. Any ideas?

    Internet speeds capped thru router.

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 02:28 PM PST

So I have the nighthawk AC1900 router. I connect my PC straight to the modem which gives me 300/20 my normal speeds. But when I connect straight to the router I only get 35/0.45. I've tried factory resetting the router & still no luck. Wi-Fi gets regular speeds also. lmk what you guys think I need to do.

    Centurylink Zyxel C3000z Bridge Mode

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 02:01 PM PST

Sorry, I'm such a noob at this. But I have my Zyxel C3000z Centurylink modem/router set to transparency/bridge mode using my PPPoE credentials and my internet works fine and dandy. Bridged to my Google Nest Wifi mesh network.

The thing is, my roommate's work VPN stopped connecting after this and she can't access the company drives/etc. from home anymore. Her VPN works just fine on other networks. Everyone else who is working remotely has work VPNs as well, and they all work except for the one mentioned above.

My question is: Would setting my C3000z into bridging mode have done something that would interfere with her VPN connecting? And if so, what could cause this and how do I fix it?

I've considered just taking the C3000z out of bridging mode, but honestly haven't because I don't exactly know how to do that. I used a guide to bridge my modem, but it doesn't tell you how to take it off bridge mode. I can't really locate any good guides which show how to reverse that, either. I can't access the GUI because it no longer has an IP address. I don't want to just mess around with it and press the reset button because I've seen some people get stuck with a reset modem that won't come out of bridge mode and they can't access it and then they also don't have internet connection due to it.

Any advice is appreciated! Please be kind...I'm trying my best to learn 😔

Needing an extender that has an ethernet input

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 05:31 PM PST

I've just moved my modem location to the corner of my house (not ideal, Im aware) to help clear up the old room it was in. Now there is no wifi in the basement so I'm looking for an extender that I can put in the basement that will plug into the modem via ethernet to provide wireless in the basement. What are some good products I could use? Thank you.

Advice for Swapping Routers and minimizing downtime

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 05:09 PM PST

    Hey all,

Currently I have Google Fiber hooked up to the Google Wifi mesh that they issued me. It kind of sucks and I want way more control over my network, so I'm branching out.

I have found some Craigslist and EBay deals to get a Ubiquity Edge Router, an EdgeMax switch, and a brand new UniFi Wifi 6 AP.

I'm planning to switch this weekend. I've got the switch and AP all set up and ready to go. The switch has been in place for weeks now so that's stationary. For the edge router, I did the initial setup via direct access as described in the setup guide.

So I guess I have two questions:

    • is there any gotchas where I would need to put my Google Wifi Mesh into bridge mode instead of cutting it out all together?

    • is there any advice for minimizing downtime during the swap? My wife will be annoyed if it's too long.

    Any tips would be great!

I would like your opinion on netgear r6900v2 nighthawk ac1900

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 05:06 PM PST

The wifi signal in my room is horrid, considering i just got a ps5 i need a secondary router that i would connect to the primary router (which is downstairs) via an ethernet cable, we have an old netgear r6900v2 nighthawk ac1900 which i plan to use as a secondary router and then connect a lan cable from the secondary router to the ps5, i was wondering if this device would be able to handle me gaming on my ps5 with little or no lag, i checked online and i can barely see any reviews on it, i also plan to connect a chromecast to it as well as my phones and two laptop, should i get a better router or will this device do. I plan to use a cat6 cable for the wiring.

Just the dns to automatic. The only real thing I have changed is I stuck down my etherent cable with adhesive tape which I don't think should be a problem. Any suggestions on what to do next would be amazing.

    Suggestions wanted for home WAP

    Posted: 04 Feb 2021 04:33 PM PST

    Hi all!

I'm looking to setup a WAP as part of a pfsense build for my home network. Aside from Ubiquiti, are there any WAPs that provide good home coverage on the 2.4 and 5GHz bands? Wifi 6 would be great but regular 802.11 is a minimum requirement. I also don't want any kind of logging into an account with the company to get into the AP, just a regular local setup and driver install.

    Thank you all in advance!
