Got hundreds of connection attempts from china & other [exploit]

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 07:34 AM PST

HI, if not in the good sub, please tell me. Sorry if my English isn't that good.

I'm an it engineer, but there i'm stuck.

I'm on windows 10, and i didn't use antivirus since December (for various reasons, please don't teach me a lesson, i know but i had issues with them so got my reasons), and recently did a scan, found nothing but malwarebytes blocked many incoming ip.

So i checked a bit everywhere, and the logs are full of rdp attempts etc.. on 3389 but that port is blocked on my modem.

They also tried 21 on my ftp (same desktop) but yet, it isn't opened on my modem, and that's my desktop getting the request, so wtf? I mean it shouldn't get to my desktop if blocked on the modem!

Processes seem normal, but i think it hides under a system process name. Problem is, i can't find which one.

What could i do? Which scan/anti-malware would you advice? How could i find the source?

I could format, but it is a workstation (vm) and mainly a music production desktop, with hundreds of plugins & precise configurations, customizations, and such, which would be very annoying to reconfigure. (I spent around 1 month the last time i formatted to get everything set).

My others windows & linux are ok, even if everything is shared on my network.

I really need help here, so thank you by advance guys

You can see a sheet of the last incoming ips blocked from malwarebytes since a few days. (they are less frequent as i turned off some services like rdp etc...)

KoalaSafe has shutdown and devices no longer working

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 07:01 PM PST

In case you didn't notice the email on Feb 13, KoalaSafe has shutdown. http://discuss.koalasafe.com/t/koalasafe-has-shutdown/3035

I was able to reset the device and follow https://docs.gl-inet.com/en/3/setup/convexa_b/first-time_setup/ to reset the Wi-Fi Name (SSID) and password to allow previously configured devices access to the internet without reconfiguring them all.

need help to get my ethernet ports running!

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 06:02 PM PST

hey folks, i need help to get my ethernet ports running! i just wired my house with cat5e and a media panel containing:

    Modem: Arris SB6141

    Switch: Dlink DGS-108

Router: Dlink Covr-C1200 (x3 for mesh network)

when i plug my computer (new macbook pro) into the ethernet ports, the network status reads "USB 10/100/1000 LAN has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet." i'm certain that the connection is good, but i'm not getting internet. i've tried renewing the DHCP and manually entering the IP, no go. also tried two other mac computers and they have the same issue. pretty stumped here, any advice is much appreciated!

    Deco M9 Plus (3 pack) $199 or 2x TP-Link AX21 $90*2

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:52 PM PST

Need some advice on which should I go for to replace my old janky Linksys & ASUS WDS setup for my new house. I took a old Linksys and ASUS router and set them up as WDS so I can get Ethernet down to my gaming room. Im noticing that other rooms in the house that is further away from main router and secondary router is getting bad signal. I decided to jump on the mesh wagon.

DECO M9 plus 3 pack is only 200 dollars at Costco.

TP-link AX1800 AX21 model is only 90 dollars on Amazon cause of sale. I would get 2 to run in mesh if possible or WDS again.

If anyone else have a better suggestion let me know. I'm not trying to go over 200 dollars. I know asus aimesh is amazing but two routers from them are pretty expensive right now.

Need port forwarding advice for MotionEyeOS

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 07:14 PM PST

So I setup a MotionEyeOS multicam setup for some family property in Amish Pennsylvania that has to use CenturyLink DSL. I got the cameras properly connected to a central hub, and I'm trying to setup port forwarding so the hub can be seen from the outside world. However, every IP and port configuration I've tried simply doesn't work. Port 80, port 8081, nothing lets me access this from an off-site iPhone, which is what the client really wants. Can anyone tell me what settings I need to type in to get this working?

Looking for help covering 1700 sqft spanning 2 apartment units

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 07:52 PM PST

My upstairs neighbor and I share an internet connection. In total both of our units are around 1700 sqft but their wifi signal and speeds are trash through the ceiling/floor and there's no way our landlord would let us run a cable. We've tried a TP-Link Powerline adapter but the speeds are bad using that as well. Wifi is also pretty crappy in my bedroom with the modem/router being in the living room.

I've been eying a ASUS RT-AC5300, would this do the trick?

What about a mesh router setup? Would that work if there's no stairs between the two units? Is that overkill?

As of right now I'm using a discontinued modem/router combo I got from Cox around 7 years ago. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Help Creating Homelab

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:24 PM PST

I recently acquired 2 Cisco 1841 routers and 2 2960 switches. I would like to create a home lab to learn and follow some CCNA tutorials. While have fun learning I don't want to mess up my home network. Is it reasonable to connect one of the Cisco 1841s to my home network on fa0/1 and tell it got get an IP address from my home routers DHCP server (simulating connecting it to an ISP)? Can I setup a DHCP server on fa0/0 on a different subnet and connect that to the switch?

I've read about connect the 2 routers with the serial port. Is that the port labeled T1 DSU/CSU ? If so can I use a regular ethernet cable for it. Sorry for the basic question.

    Secret Parental Controls?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 08:08 PM PST

I'm trying to add parental controls with a younger person in my household and using the router settings says "blocked access" when said person tries to connect. Is there a way to make it appear to just be faulty internet so they get off the computer?

    MikroTik 10Gb switch disconnecting with 10GBASE-T SFP+ to RJ45

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 07:49 PM PST

I recently acquired a MikroTik CRS305-1G-4S+ (4 port SFP+ switch) and 2 10GBASE-T SFP+ to RJ45 transceivers (Those ones exactly) to plug into the switch and my ASUS Aquantia 10G network card

And after plugging in my 25ish meter CAT6 Cable into both sides I get a link for about 5 minutes and all seems well and works flawlessly for about 2 minutes and then the following starts to happen

    • after running a constant ping to 1.1.1.1 about every 30 seconds or so I get "Request timed out" once or twice then it recovers (During which I have no internet just to clarify)

Then after almost exactly 5 minutes from me inserting the transceiver I drop all connection to my LAN and the internet and upon unplugging the transceiver it is WAY too hot (I understand they can get hot sometimes but this was like I could not hold it in my fingers for longer than a couple of seconds without burning them)

Any ideas on what is going on here?

Could it be a bad transceiver(s)?

Could it be a bad switch?

Could my CAT6 run be too long for this 30m transceiver(s)?

Are the transceivers too high power for this switch?

(yes I know CAT6a would be best for long distance 10G networking but it will have to do for now)

Troubleshooting steps I have taken so far:

    1. Switching which transceiver is plugged into what
    2. Trying different ports on the switch
    3. Using POE as power for the switch and not the power supply
    4. Testing my CAT6 cable and verifying its connection

Thanks for your help in advance!

Not sure if this is the right place to ask but needing help putting together a "proper" wireless network for my church

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 05:36 PM PST

Long story short, my church has a wireless network that quite honestly is a piece of junk. It's a collection of hodge-podge stuff and multiple wireless networks and quite frankly doesn't work well. I've been given a budget of about $500 and the church building has around 24,000 sq ft that need coverage.

The current gear they've got is a pair of ATT modems (one of which they're using as a WAP) and and old Sonicwall (I think a TZ130 or something). They have maybe 20-30 computers connected to this laptop at any given time (there's a school there) and they tend to overrun any one network.

I'm trying to figure out the best way to cover all 24,000 sq ft of this area with (ideally) one network. I work server help desk stuff so I'm not unfamiliar with networks but the networks I work are all wired. I have no idea what is even out there for home or small office networking in the wireless space. Is a mesh network something I should look for? Is Google wireless worth it or just trash? Do I need a higher than $500 budget? What's the ideal here?

Edit: Since I didn't include it - There are 20-30 wireless clients and the only thing that's really wired in is the security system and cameras.

I can't access it based on public ip because my ISP locks the incoming request.
do you know if I could connect in any way or I need to use somethings like remote.it or ngirok.io

    What's the difference between these 2 tP-link unmanaged switches? tL-SG108 and LS1008G

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:33 PM PST

My TV entertainment system area has outgrown the existing 5 port switch and I've been looking at options for something new. Comparing the TL-SG108 against the LS1008G, I'm only finding these differences:

    • TL-SG108 has 802.1p/DSCP QoS and IGMP Snooping
    • LS1008G has "Back Pressure". Also lower power consumption and dissipates more heat

I don't understand how QoS works on an unmanaged dumb switch? And what is "back pressure"?

Is Ubiquiti Dream Machine pro worth it?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 05:07 PM PST

I am looking at my next home network upgrade, and seeking advice!

I currently have a pfSense running on a zotac, I liked it so far, but it's time to refresh the box as it is not keeping up! Restarts are becoming more common but after 5 years run not abnormal! And after upgrading my internet connection, I realized that I am loosing 20% of my bandwidth, even with only the firewall feature enabled!

My search led me towardsUniFi Dream Machine Pro/UDM, performance and UI looks superb, but all I have seen is YouTube video's and some how-to guides!

Can anyone share their experience with UDM? Hopefully someone who did a move like the one I am planning!

I have a 1 Gbps Internet, I should use the ISP's router which has 1Gbps Ethernet Interface, as UDM has 3.5Gbps inspected traffic IPS throughput my assumption is that I will get the full 1Gbps out of UDM (all inspected and clean), can someone share if they are in practice seeing what I assume should happen?

I have TP-link Deco in Access Point mode (they set behind my pfSense which also acts as DHCP/DNS), and are Ethernet back-hauled (via a Gigabit Ethernet Switch), anyone doing such setup with UDM who can tell me if I will regret this UniFi/Deco coexistence or not?

    Thanks

UCS Fabric Interconnect for Home, eh?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:29 PM PST

I was going to post this in r/networking but it applies mroe to my homelab. I have a older Cisco C240-M3 for my home lab and may grow it out. With the new flash death I obviously can't access the GUI, other wise there are some work arounds which I am already using. However a Fabric Interconnect would be nice as we actually use one at work and I would like to get the chance to do this at home as well. I am looking online at used ones but licensing is of course a thing. I have attached info for one on ebay I am looking at. Just curious if anyone else has done the same or not. I am not looking for work arounds to my server access, just needing input on using one of these at home.

    Thanks!

Reliable routers compatible with Spectrum for WFH?

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 07:09 PM PST

Hi everyone, I'm moving out and setting up my internet for the first time. 2-3 people in the house will be working from home, including video conferencing, and will need a reliable connection. We also have a few smart devices. We will be set up with Spectrum 200mbps plan. Although the modem is free and router is only $5/mo, I have heard other options on the market are superior.

For reference, I am used to Netgear AC1750 WiFi cable modem router model c6300 ($160) with Google WiFi extender ($90 for 1, $200 for 3) in my home office. I'm looking for something with similar reliability but hopefully at a better price point. Any suggestions?

I appreciate any responses and apologize if this question is in the wrong place. Thanks!

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:09 PM PST

So basically my ISP is utter garbage, which is something I've known since I started using their wifi. The problem is certain things just don't work on my wifi. Omegle and 4chan won't work ever. Also certain games on my xbox just can't seem to connect the internet. Destiny 2 is what I'm trying to play and I keep getting loading errors, but this has also happened with a few other games, they just never work. I can play other multiplayer games and such, but idk. Just looking for help I guess

    Router/modem questions

    Posted: 24 Feb 2021 03:00 PM PST

    Hello,

First time posting here and I have a question regarding a modem/router combo I am planning on buying.

First of all the router I am planning on buying is the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000. My main use for the router would be gaming. Secondly, what would be the best modem to compliment this router. I am running on the Spectrum network with a 100mbps plan and I am currently using a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 router with a Netgear CM700 modem. I live in Gillette, Wyoming so internet speeds lag behind compared to most major metropolitan areas.

    Thanks!

How to turn off isolation on guest network

We rent rooms to grad students, they access the guest network, while we use the 'main' one. However, some students also have wifi printers, so they would like to be able to print.
