Can I use my own cables with ATT fiber or just I use what's provided? Posted: 01 Feb 2021 04:56 PM PST I have att fiber and the service box is attached in an awkward position. I would like to run a cat6 cable from the service box to the gateway but tech support informs me this will not work because the included (cat 5e) cable is special and the only one that works with ATT. Is this just a deterrent or is there an actual quality decrease. Will add pictures to comments Edit: pics Update: my own cables works fine [link] [comments] |
Would wall temperature affect the performance of an ethernet cable? Posted: 01 Feb 2021 04:59 PM PST My ethernet port is on the left wall and I need a wired connection on the right wall. The north wall is suspective to the weather outside. To be neat and avoid a wire running across the room, I'd be running the cable along the wall, not IN the wall. Thanks in advance [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2021 06:36 PM PST Hey everyone! I have one of the strangest things I've ever seen, and I'm curious if you have any ideas. Yesterday, I installed a USB-C dock (from Monoprice, if it matters) for my work computer (a MacBook Pro). It's connected via gigabit ethernet to a switch in my office, which then goes to a Ubiquiti Edgerouter10X in my basement, and then through Comcast. Long story short (and this took a while to figure out). If I let my computer go to sleep and leave the ethernet plugged into the USB-C hub, it will kill all traffic on my LAN after about five minutes. Unplugging the ethernet cable brings the LAN back up, but leave my TP-Link Decos (WiFi Access Points) in a state where they need to be rebooted before they'll pass traffic. I worked without issue with the computer on all morning. LAN got killed shortly after computer went to sleep while I was eating. Unplugged the cable, and rebooted the decos and I'm back to normal until I intentionally put the computer to sleep after work and watched when the LAN traffic was killed again after about five minutes. Nothing odd in the logs on the MacBook Pro. Nothing shows up at all in the logs in the EdgeRouter. Didn't have this issue with a different USB-C to LAN adapter with the same computer and LAN configuration. Now the easy answer here is to return the USB-C docking station - but this issue is so freaking curious I'm just wondering if you have any other ideas. Like - what could this particular docking station be doing to my LAN? Thanks in advance. Maybe this is a fun one to figure out? [link] [comments] |
How do I test new Ethernet lines Posted: 01 Feb 2021 02:44 PM PST I'm running new lines in my house and have a simple tester to see if wires are connected in the right order, but how do I test to see if they're getting full speed? Do I just have to plug a computer into the line and see if I a get gigabit connection? Is there an easier way without having an expensive tester? [link] [comments] |
Can't connect to my router thought apartment router. Posted: 01 Feb 2021 05:37 PM PST So... here's the setup. I live in an apparment and every unit in the apparment shares internet. Bill is bundled with rent. Can't complain too much, when they switched us over couple years back the internet got WAY better. (maybe Fiber to the Premis). But it looks like now with have two layers of routers to go through.
My belkin router thinks 10.x.x.x is my WAN Gateway. If I get my phone off wifi I can ping 65.x.x.x but not that 10.x.x.x address. My suspicion is that the 65.x.x.x address is the appartment's gateway and setup with NAT to allow 'returning traffic' but not 'new inbound traffic'. Does anyone have a clue how I can trick the 65.x.x.x router to forward new traffic to my 10.x.x.x address? (Hope this all makes sense. I've been spending the last 3 months trying to learn networking stuff so I'm not even sure if I know what I'm looking at.) [link] [comments] |
How to monitor detailed internet usage? Posted: 01 Feb 2021 02:15 PM PST So my brother and I recently exceeded our "1280GB" monthly data cap here at Cox. We usually only use about 800-900GB a month and yesterday we tried to be as conservative as we could with the internet and used about 68GB in just ONE day. Something seems off. Is there a way for us to check internet traffic individually coming through our router based on device and applications? Thank you in advance. [link] [comments] |
Seeking Advice for Router to replace Spectrum Sagemcom Posted: 01 Feb 2021 07:46 PM PST I want to get rid of this Spectrum Sagemcom SAC2V2S Router they sent me. It's giving me nothing but problems. Any recommendations for a better router would greatly be appreciated. This Sagemcom replaced the old Router/Modem all in one I had from Spectrum but was never getting close to the Mbps I had been paying for so they sent out their latest and not greatest separate Router and a Modem. My speeds absolutely improved but the internet goes on and off too much. Such a pain [link] [comments] |
ASUS RT-AC68U with GL.iNet AR750 downstream - IP addresses OK with default configs? Posted: 01 Feb 2021 07:44 PM PST To start, 1) I don't actually have a problem (yet) and 2) I don't know if I have a problem (yet) because I only set this network up temporarily, did some basic confirmation that I could get my iPads access to the Internet, then had to turn it off and pack it away (no, I'm not doing anything illegal, just trying to pre-setup a home network for a place I'm about to rent in a few days due to moving out for divorce, and need to have access ASAP) 3) some of what I'm writing below is based on reading the manuals rather than verifying in the system because, as I said, it's packed up right now. The ASUS is Router 1, connected to the modem, the GL.iNet is Router 2, connected via it's WAN to a LAN port on the ASUS. The ASUS defaults as 192.168.1.1, and acting as a DHCP server with 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254. The GL.iNet defaults with 192.168.8.1. It doesn't seem to have further configuration for DHCP server, and I didn't see anything about setting up the subnet other than just changing the LAN IP with suggestions for the usual private address numbers (192.168.x.x, 172.x.x.x, 10.x.x.x). Given that the ASUS doesn't seem to go near the 192.168.8.x range, should I be in the clear as far as potential IP Address conflicts with any devices attached to either router? (FWIW, I am planning to put a printer up on the ASUS, that I'd like to also access from the devices down on the GL.iNet. That's really the only LAN-relevant device. Everything else is just iPads or laptops needing to access the Internet.) [link] [comments] |
why aren't there 3 port switches/how do I get a 2.5gbe link without emptying my bank acct? Posted: 01 Feb 2021 07:41 PM PST I have a bit of a problem, I want a 2.5gbe link between my bedroom and office PC's, and a few 1gbe on both ends for other devices and my ONT. should be simple, except the run is somewhat complex so I cant do 2 cables, and I don't have the cash for 2*2.5gbe switches on both sides. my question is why aren't there any 3 port switches so I can have a run with a switch on each end that breaks out into my pc and a 1gbe switch for other stuff? it seems like that would lower the cost, especially if most features could be left out and have it just sold as a splitter. alternatively, I wouldn't mind hacking together a pi/Arduino based solution, but I can't find any instructions for that, nor any hats/breakouts that have 2.5gbe. if anyone knows anything about how to do this without blowing $250 on 2.5gbe switches, please comment, im losing my sanity by the minute [link] [comments] |

Posted: 01 Feb 2021 07:37 PM PST I'm trying to get faster internet to a part of my house that its needed, and when I open my QoS I see (picture). But I have no idea which settings do what, or how to even router more wifi into other things. I have a router in the room, do I set the QoS to that? Or can I directly route it into my xbox? (it wont let me post the picture here, so its put into an imgur) (If theres any missing info, feel free to ask) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2021 07:25 PM PST Hello everyone. I found out about MoCa adapters and what they can do for your home network. I wanted to run my plan for the setup based on what I have seen on videos and read about. I want to make sure that this would be effective so I wanted to double check with community members that are probably more knowledgeable about this than me. From the main Spectrum coax I see the splitter that goes into all of the rooms of my house. From there I will set up the MoCa adapter in my living room. I plan on using a moca approved splitter to split the coax into the modem and the MoCa adapter. Then I run an ethernet cable from my router to the MoCa adapter. Is this setup correct? Will this setup allow the internet signal to shoot back out to all the other rooms where I will also set up the receiving MoCa adapters? My other question is regarding POE filters. Does the one spectrum have setup at the main coax work? Or do I have to replace that one as well. Thank you ahead of time and I appreciate all of the valuable input. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2021 03:35 PM PST Short intro. While I was having electrical work done on my house I got chatting to the tradesman. He recommended I set up a unifi network. I may have complained a little bit...anyways. I now have a Unifi network installed by this guy. I am very happy with it and would like to learn more about it. Especially I would like to put it to its full potential and make sure its secure. Well in today's climate it would make sense for me learn more about networking. The site has been setup to mirror my old WiFi router so everything just connected. I think its time to dive in and properly set this up. My Unifi USG-3PCloudkey G1Switch US-16-150Wx2 UAP nanoHD My main objective is to secure the network. Make full use of my resources and hopefully learn some new skills. Ive done a fair bit of reading. Just feel I need a bit of a push in the right direction where to start and how to go about it TIA [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2021 07:17 PM PST I'm trying to get my D-LINK router set up with evening filters to stop my child from being online after a certain time. When I log into my router (D-LINK DIR819) -> advanced -> access control and walk thru the wizard, I'm only presented with a single option in the STEP 2, schedule "Always". There should be the option to select times / set times. Any idea why I only have 1 option in the drop-down list of values? Thanks so much. [link] [comments] |
Download speed being capped on steam without a cap Posted: 01 Feb 2021 03:28 PM PST My download speed is normally 20mbs to 60mbs. When I go onto steam and download a game its 2mbs to 4mbs rarely i get 6mb. My computer has a tp-link duel band wireless card. I share a home with 3 people if that helps in anyway. Help with 4g ethernet connection. Posted: 01 Feb 2021 06:53 PM PST I have a 4g dongle. the only port it has is a micro usb for charging. I was wondering if it was possible to get enough adapters to use it as a wired ethernet to my pc. I don't think it is possible but i am asking anyway because people here know more than I do. Posted: 01 Feb 2021 06:53 PM PST Hi all. First time posting here so I appreciate any advice or direction. I have modest experience and knowledge with this stuff so ELI5 is appreciated. I'm very frustrated with my current wifi setup. I'm using a Netgear AC1000 router with a Netgear CM1000 modem. Both are relatively new, and were bought within the last two years or so. My internet is through Xfinity, and I'm paying for 200 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload. I just did a speed test sitting a few feet from my router/modem and clocked in at 38.8 down and 5.6 up. Speed decreases pretty significantly as I move around to different parts of the house (not a mansion, but under 1900 square feet). I talked with Xfinity and they ran some "diagnostics" and said all looked good on their end, and to check with Netgear. I did that, and they had me change a few settings in my router and said that should fix it. It improved speed by a few Mbps but that's all. I'm not expecting to get the full 200 Mbps, but I was at least hoping to get half of that. Any advice or tips on improving speed would be greatly appreciated! Is it as simple as a modem/router upgrade? TiA! [link] [comments] |
Dropped Pings...what’s the cause? Posted: 01 Feb 2021 06:40 PM PST I had some hiccups in Zoom calls today with Zoom saying I had network issues. I have an Ethernet connection the the router with 300/300mbps. I troubleshooted some and realized after pinging the router, I got some drops (maybe 1% over 10 minutes). Deeper dive: made a short Python script to run on two devices (one on a wireless network) to constantly ping the router to see if there was something maybe wrong with the cat5e cable to the original device I was having dropouts on. While watching Hulu tonight, there was a dropout and Network Error. Check both computers running the script and it turns out they both had failed pings at the same time. It's not a service disruption—I literally couldn't reach the router. It's an ISP provided router. Any idea what could be wrong? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2021 06:35 PM PST Sorry if this has been asked before but I have a router/modem provided by the isp and an Ethernet cable running upstairs where I have another router accepting the cable in it's wan/lan port. This was working until a reset was needed, now I can't get internet to the second router no matter what settings I try. Before the 2nd router was set up as its own router, just with the wan connected to the others lan. Now it has an error with dchp settings This setup looks like the depiction of an access point mode that comes on router 2 but that isn't working either. Any suggestions? Not sure why it's not working anymore. [link] [comments] |
What is this box/circuit board called? Posted: 01 Feb 2021 02:45 PM PST Does anyone know what this little box is called? It is the interface betwen the BT openreach master socket and the cable coming into the flat. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/v6cjtlphefd2uid/AADaudZLHe2z4xGqYmmg-mzha?dl=0 I am looking to replace the cat 5 cable as it is old and battered, but one end of it is crimped into this small box. Cheers [link] [comments] |
Initial Domain not working after adding redirects for www and subdomains. Posted: 01 Feb 2021 05:59 PM PST Just a disclaimer, I am a noob to networking. Recently I just started my own locally hosted web server with a raspberry pi. I have set up almost everything (from ssh keys to the index.html) . I bought an .xyz domain from namecheap.com, set up ddclient to forward any ip changes and added the initial A record to redirect the domain to my home server and everything worked great. I could type in site.xyz and it loaded index.html fine. To polish everything off, I added 2 more A records, the hosts being "www" and "*" to redirect subdomains and redirected them to the same ip as the initial A record. I waited for the site to update and to my surprise I got a ERR_connection_refused when typing www.site.xyz . I then tried site.xyz , however, the same error came up. So I deleted the www and * a records,. however, the error still persists on site.xyz . I thought my server broke, however, when I type in my numerical ipv4 address, my website is online. So it must be some problem with the domain. I checked to see if maybe my ddclient was setup incorrectly and my ip changed, but no. Its still the correct IP. Restarting my server also did nothing. Please can someone at least give me a diagnostic process that I should go through so I can solve this? I really dont feel like starting from scratch. Thanks for all replies! [link] [comments] |
How do I know Which Patch Panel port corresponds to which Wall Plate? Posted: 01 Feb 2021 05:29 PM PST The patch panel in my attic is totally unlabeled. We have wallplates in every room. Is there a device that will help me map the physical network layout of my house? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 01 Feb 2021 05:26 PM PST I bought the Kufwi CPE70R bridge set to get internet to my fathers mobile home from the main house. I was able to pair the two Kuwfi antennas and I set the tp-link wifi router to access point mode. If I plug the tp-link router into the technicolor dsl router/wifi (hardwired) it works great. When I try to use the bridge system, no joy. Please help if you can.....I'm over my head at this time. [link] [comments] |
Time Machine solution for TP-Link Omada network Posted: 01 Feb 2021 01:37 PM PST I am setting up a network in a large home consisting of: Router: TL-R605 Omada Controller: OC200 Managed POE switches: TL-SG2210P Access Points: EAP620-HD All of these devices can be easily managed with the Omada iPhone app. Is there a way to connect a hard drive and backup my Apple computers using Time Machine? Time Machine backup is so easy, and I would like to continue using it. If there is an alternative NAS solution that will work better with my Omada system please advise. Dose anyone see any issues with the system as described above? I also plan to integrate a Lorex IP security system. Frank [link] [comments] |
