This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

First Build. Creating a PC to run 6 Monitors for Trading. That a will be its sole purpose. And a personal CPU for Entertainment, mainly streaming shows and reviewing charts. After getting some feedback about overkill, looking for some help if this look better? Ready to order.

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 08:39 AM PST

    Hey All,

My purpose of the build is to get a PC that can run 6 monitors. Details and high resolution in the monitors is important as I will be using them for trading, need details in the charting. That is the sole purpose of the build.
Created the build based off of suggesting on last posts and I would like to get creative with the RGB lighting so I selected some products that would work with the ascetics too. Feeling very comfortable with the price right at $1,000.

Ready to start to ordering the parts if we think this build will work for me! (Mainly nervous that something will not fit).

CPU Cooler, Do not have one now, do I need one of these? If so looking at the "be quiet! Dark Rock Tf." Have the budget to add this if anyone would recommend it. Will be running the PC all day and long nights.

Motherboard, Selected it based of Amazon reviews and the specs. Maybe I can save some money here and get a Non-Gamer one and get what I need. Having Bluetooth available to add later is nice and need a good LAN port. Seems to have the ports I need at a good price though.
Video Card, If some knows if a better GC. Feel like this GC running 6 Mini-Display Ports at 4k would be plenty for what I need, price seemed good. And running the Monitors through active adaptors seems the simplest/cheapest solution for this. Getting this note on compatibility "Unable to verify the Fractal Design Meshify C ATX Mid Tower Case has sufficient space to fit the VisionTek Radeon HD 7750 2 GB Video Card." Anyone know how to confirm this?

Memory, PS, Fans and Case, Were selected to run the RGB lights and popularity.

    Thanks for the help!

GPU is having major issues need help

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 09:45 AM PST

SOLVED: Reverted to an older driver nvidia 461.09 was being dodgy with my system

Ok so I can only get the following scenario to happen on GTA V so far:

The PC after playing for a short time, will proceed to crash to a black screen and the fans go 100% power only way out of this is to hard restart the PC.

I never get any crash dump files and the only thing I have managed to find is windows usually detects a hardware error when this happens with either code 193 or code 141 in reliablity history (more commonly it is error 141)

This issue is driving me mad it only happens on GTA V to my knowledge I have re-installed both the current nvidia driver and the game and still it refuses to work.

    Any ideas?

EDIT: so some updates I gathered so far

Fur mark makes the gpu run at about 64 degrees after a couple of mins on 1920x1080

GTA usually crashses seemingly at random and the GPU is around 55-60 degrees when this happens

Did I screw up my PC?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:04 AM PST

I have vacuumed my pc many, many different times in the past and it usually sped it up. But today, after vacuuming it, it doesn't work. I've just read online that it's a very bad idea to vacuum your pc, which just got me really fucked in the brain. It shows the light on the pc when I turn it on and it sounds normal but the mouse doesn't glow, the wifi adapter usb doesn't glow and the monitor says no signal. I have a feeling that I've seriously fucked myself in the ass right now. I use it basically every day and everything inside looks alright but I have a terrible feeling that I may have just killed it. I've had it for over 5-6 years now and it usually worked well enough. I have gtx 960 and other from that, everything is actual dogcrap. I have been thinking of getting a 3060 pc and a whole new setup when summer comes around. Please someone help me on what I should do. I mostly vacuumed my gpu and cooler and some dust on the sides. Please give me advice on what I have to do now

Edit: have done almost everything the comments have said and I'm hopeless at this point at fixing it myself. I'll probably take it over to a pc repair service my friend runs tomorrow. Thank you all for your feedback and advice, although it didn't help, I still appereciate all of the help SO MUCH. So once again, thank you! I have been seriously informed with so many new information here and I'm glad to see that so many people were willing to help! A sincere thank you to all of you who helped out or at least tried. Guess I really fucked it on this one 😅

Black circle in the middle of IHS after removing CPU cooler. Should I be worried about this?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 09:04 AM PST

I took off my DRP4 to upgrade my 3950X cooler and I found a black circle in the centre of the IHS. I tried cleaning it off as much as I can with IPA but no luck. The cooler also had a similar mark in the same location but wasn't black, it was more of a circular scratch.

Should I be worried about this?

So here's the story... I've been trying to get a 3080 and a 5600X for a while now and like many others have had no luck. I decided to stop by my local Micro Center today to see if I got lucky and found any 30 series or a 5600X. As soon as I got there things didn't look good. I saw signs everywhere saying they were out of 3060ti, 3080, and 3090. "Maybe they have a 3070?" I said, while I saw a bunch of disappointed people walk out that clearly looked like they were trying to snag one of these.

So I went in anyway and talked to a salesman. And no surprise, they didn't have anything in stock. No NVIDIA 30 series and no Zen 3. It was fine, I had low expectations coming in. I asked if there was a way to get notified or if I at least could know when their trucks come in. He told me that they come in Wednesday through Friday but that people line up in the morning before they open to see if they can get one. I was like "OK, maybe I'll come and do the line." But then something magical happened. I asked if there was any other way to get one. And it turns out there was. He said that they reserve some computer parts for their in-house build service and that if I was buying a pre-built or was replacing a part on my computer, I could maybe get one of those. "So let me get this straight. If I buy all my parts elsewhere and bring them here for you to assemble, there's a special cache of parts I now have access to?" His answer was yes. "Can you please check to see if there are any?" I said. When he came back, he said "We've got 2 3060tis, 2 3070s, and 1 3080. We also have a 5800X."

    Holy. Shit.

Now this is were I was conflicted. Not only would I have to pay for the assembly, but most importantly, I wouldn't assemble the computer myself. But here's the thing, I don't even have a PC right now and I've been waiting since November. I can always just disassemble and reassemble it again myself. The other downside here is the build cost, which is not even that much in the grand scheme of things. So I decided to jump in. I pulled up my parts list and looked for them all in the store and replaced whatever they didn't have with the next best alternative.

And that's how I walked out of Micro Center with my build purchased. Will be done tomorrow so I will post pictures then.

I would also love to get some feedback on the actual parts list. This is my first time doing this. Well, picking all the parts and doing all the research at least. Unfortunately my parts won't be virgin by the time I receive them. A big part of why this made sense was because of the discount in the mobo and the CPU. The mobo was open box so that's why it was less. The CPU just had a lower price than what I've seen online, which is why I was OK with a 5800X.

Anyway, if any of you are planning on going to Micro Center, make sure you ask if they have any reserved for in-house builds. Maybe you'll get lucky like I did!

Better gpu for warzone: Rx 6800 or 3070?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:30 AM PST

I lucked out and got a 5600x cpu, now I can't decide which gpu to pair with it.

I know this comparison has been posted before but wanting to hear from actual users who have had some time with these cards now in warzone at 1440p. All benchmarks I find are months old and I assume optimization has been done on these cards since then.

I really only care about the fps performance in warzone to be honest and I am upgrading from a ryzen 5 3600 / rx 5700, which I get about 120-130fps at 1080 out of. Searching for the card that will give me over 144 fps at 1440 consistently.

Thank you for any experience you all can share!

Owners of a GeForce 1660 Ti GPU..... anyone else have fan problems?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 09:50 AM PST

So, I built my first PC late 2019 (holy moly was that scary), got the "GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Windforce OC 6G" (phew).... Right away I noticed the fans would "rev" and kind of, rattle? I didn't and still don't really, know much about PC's (I only ever owned HP laptops before), so I thought it might be just something they do. Last night after turning my PC on, I notice my second fan stopped working (edit: it's both of them actually). What could be the issue? Has anyone else experienced these issues with their card? Is this even the right sub for this?

PCI card with internal type C connector

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 10:30 AM PST

    Hello.

I have a corsair 4000d airflow case and my motherboard does not have an internal type c port so I want to buy a PCI card to add this.

I know Sylverstone makes such a card, but I can't find it locally and I would prefer this as opposed to buying from amazon.

I found two cards made by Delock, but I'm confused which one I need since they use a weird naming for the internal port.

    https://www.delock.com/produkt/89906/merkmale.html -> internal USB 3.1 Gen 2 key A 20 pin female

    https://www.delock.com/produkt/89801/merkmale.html -> internal USB 3.1 Gen 2 key B 20 pin female

From my understanding key B is actually used to connect two type A USB ports and type A (somethings called type E?) would actually be what I need but I'm not 100% certain because the naming for this is very confusing (thanks USB-IF).

If anyone has any experience with this and could help me out I would appreciate it.

    Thanks.

The question is, would they all work if i got 3pin RGB splitters? i think most of them use 3 pins. My motherboard is the MSI MPG z490 gaming edge that has two 4-pin plugs and two 3-pin plugs. I also have a 6-fan hub that uses one of these connectors. How could i set all this up? Thanks!

M2 SSD behind GPU, safe ?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 06:49 AM PST

I've been thinking lately to buy myself a new ssd (1tb) and I have an option to buy either m2 nvme or 2.5 sata. I know that nvme are a lot faster because I already have one. The thing is, I have one more m2 slot left but it is located behind GPU. I was wondering if gpu could maybe damage my ssd if I install it there. My GPU temps usually stay below 82°C so it isnt THAT hot and I know that nvme does like hot temperatures. I just need your opinion if I should place it there or go with 2.5 sata. Also I dont think I can fit heatsink on m2 ssd, dont think there is enough room for that.

    XFX RX 480 (8gb) with Dual Xeon X5680 or i7-7700 (not k)

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 09:42 AM PST

Hey Folks I'm struggling deciding over these two because in theory the dual Xeon can perform as well as the other processor. I have a Radeon rx580 8 gb graphics card to go in either.

I have two options and would love some feedback on which route to go. Below are the specs for each build and cost. Price isn't really a factor but I wouldn't want to pay more for the same performance as the i7 (if that's true?)

    Prebuilt PC1:

    Dual Xeon X5680

12GB Ram DDR3 (have extra ddr3 laying around so I can add more easily)

    ~1 TB SSD + HDD

    GPU: XFX Radeon rx580 8gb

    Cost: $175

    ——

    Prebuilt PC2:

    I7-7700

    16GB DDR4

    240 SSD

    1 TB HDD

GPU: GeForce GT 710 (could sell for $40 ish since I'm putting the rx580 8gb one in)

    Cost: $320-$40= $280

I can't really find benchmarks for these two against each other especially the dual Xeon.

    All advice is welcome!

    Need help buying a monitor

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 10:10 AM PST

I currently have a Dell U2412M moniter, and I'm pretty happy with it, but I figure its time to upgrade to something better as I just built a gaming pc that is much nicer than my current laptop. I was thinking of getting the Gigabyte G27FC to go with my new pc, but I keep hearing that its a bad choice, and the quality control is terrible. if my budget is about $250 is this as good as I'm going to get, or is it a bad choice?

    Edit:

I want it to be at least 27" and I think I want a refresh rate around 144hz. I'm ok with it being 1080p, as I might have to limit it to that for now because I couldn't get a good graphics card. I want it to have g-sync or be g-sync compatible. viewing angles aren't that important to me, and I am willing to sacrifice a really fast response time for better picture type.

my new pc has a r7 3700, 16gb ram, and a gtx 1660 super. I hope to upgrade to a 3060 ti when I can find one that I can afford, but I'm thinking that its going to be a year or so.

I don't even know what is going on

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 03:04 PM PST

So I want to build a PC, but I seriously have no clue about what I "need." I don't want to blow thousands of dollars on it either. So I would really appreciate advice and help. I have a friend who is super into computers and he has been helping me with all of this, but I wanted to get some secondary opinions just because I don't know. Ya know? I will have a dual monitor setup btw (I don't know if that matters or not)

So I plan to use this computer for gaming. All in 1080p, and no games that are too new. Most intense is probably GTA V. I also intend on doing some photo editing in Adobe Creative Cloud as part of my job. I have no problem buying new or used. I really REALLY appreciate feedback because this is my first PC build.

Here is what we have picked out so far:

    • Ryzen 5 (1600, 2600 or 3600) Whichever I can find for a good price
    • Nvidia 980 or 1080 (TI) The TI is optional and I haven't decided because the prices seem to fluctuate a bunch

New build really slow to progress through POST

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 03:01 PM PST

Built my machine in mid-December. All was good. About 2 weeks ago, the machine took a long time to progress through POST. It took about 1-2 minutes. After POSTing, it would boot as normal with no issues. The diagnostic LEDs shone VGA then BOOT and then they would both go out and bootup would proceed as normal. I thought it may be a BIOS thing and saw that Gigabyte had come out with a new BIOS for the board a couple of days ago so I updated from F10 to F12. The problem still persists. If I put the system to sleep, there is no issue. The machine runs like a dream when it has booted. I would really appreciate if anyone could offer some insight. Thanks.

Want to upgrade my PC but I’m not sure which path to go down.

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 08:09 AM PST

I'm currently fine with the performance of my pc but I would rather invest a little now so that I don't have to overhaul everything later.

The GTX 3060's that are coming out now are on my list but i'm fine with the performance of my RX 580. I was thinking of getting a new motherboard and cpu, but knowing that DDR5 comes out in 1-2 years and the motherboards or cpu's that are out now won't be compatible puts me off a lot.

My plan is to buy the GTX 3060 when it comes out for a good price this year and then wait until DDR5 compatible motherboards are released when I upgrade my cpu and motherboard.

    Any suggestions would be cool.

    New SSD for Linux

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 02:55 PM PST

    Hi all.

My current gaming rig was built by a pc building company, and has a windows OS with the OS installed on an M.2, with an extra HDD for some more storage. I would ideally like to add a Linux OS to this PC.

My plan was to buy an internal SSD and install Linux on there. Is this something that make sense? Can you have to OSS on a PC stored on different storage devices? Or do I need to get rid of the windows OS on the M.2? If this is correct, how would I know which SSDs are compatible with my current hardware, and if the Linux OS is compatible with the hardware?

Lastly, the PC was overclocked for me. Is using a Linux OS on an overclocked CPU going to be a problem? Will it remove the overclock settings when I'm gaming on the windows OS?

    Cheers
