Posted: 21 Jan 2021 11:40 AM PST So I was looking for a wallpaper and found one I liked, the link took me to a scam site telling me that I won an iPhone, I left the site, but I still wanted the wallpaper, so I middle clicked the image and downloaded the wallpaper using wget. I got the wallpaper and set it, but after a second thought was that a good choice? Is it possible for wget to download more files than the image? Was what I did safe? [link] [comments] |

Moving from Kubuntu to Linux Mint Posted: 21 Jan 2021 02:17 PM PST I switched from Windows 10 to Kubuntu Linux about six months ago and haven't looked back. I'm keen to try out Linux Mint though. What's the easiest way to switch from one distro to another? All of my data is held in online storage (Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive) so I'm not worried about keeping any of the data on the hard drive, nor am I worried about keeping hold of any of the settings. I just want a "fresh intall" of Mint so I can see how it works out of the box. Any advice much appreciated! Thank you all. [link] [comments] |
RST preventing installation of Ubuntu 20.04 Posted: 21 Jan 2021 10:18 AM PST Good evening, I am experiencing issues installing Ubuntu 20.04 on my Hp Pavilion x360 running Win10 Pro. I have disabled optane, switched to AHCI (shows that's the disk is a non-raid AHCI). Yet the bootable drive still tells me that RST I'd enabled and that it cannot install Ubuntu. Could anyone help me? [link] [comments] |
Wine mscorlin recursive resource lookup bug Posted: 21 Jan 2021 10:06 AM PST I already uninstalled mono before installing 4.7.2 on linux, though it was removed really fast so it might not have been removed. Wireless Internet on Linux mint Posted: 21 Jan 2021 12:28 AM PST I recently switched from Windows 10 to LInux mint on my old laptop, mainly because it couldn't handle windows 10. As soon as I installed the system I started looking for how to enable wireless internet on linux mint (xcfyce) but I didn't find it anywhere, can anyone help? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 21 Jan 2021 02:18 PM PST So I had a little thing set up to automount the harddrive of my raspberry pi on my desktop, it worked flawlessly. I distrohopped and came back to Manjaro, I re-setup all of my stuff and everything worked except for this. When I'd put the command into fstab it'd work initially, however once I'd reboot I'd loose access to my home directory and the drive wouldn't mount and would give me a read write error popup. Anyone got any idea what is up? /etc/fstab:

Internet not working right on Endeavour OS live usb, trying to figure out if I should install or not Posted: 21 Jan 2021 02:10 PM PST So I downloaded the live USB, and it seems to function fairly poorly ATM, like Firefox is taking 10 minutes to load any page beyond googles search engine and results. Mirrors took 10 minutes to update, and I'm fairly certain clicking "update this app" did nothing. In other news my phone is connected to same WiFi and working fine, using pop!_OS on my system and WiFi works, but it's like it doesn't even attempt to send/receive data for the first 10 minutes, then loads half a page. The online installer turned itself into an offline installer with no packages so I decided not to install out of fear of wasting all my time on an OS that doesn't seem to work on my system. Here's what I have System: 2019 Razer Blade stealth 13 (Quartz) Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-8565U CPU @ 1.80GHz × 8 Graphics: NVIDIA Corporation GP108M [GeForce MX150] Please any help would be appreciated as I look forward to plunging into Endeavour [link] [comments] |
Everything is working except desktop Posted: 21 Jan 2021 04:35 AM PST I just installed Linux with a Plasma desktop environment and customized it, but when I did a restart and logged back in my Wallpaper was gone and I could not left-click or right-click anywhere on the but evrything else worked fine. Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:07 PM PST I've started dual booting Linux Mint 20.1 until I can comfortably use it for everything I did on windows and I'm almost to that point. The only thing left is to connect my PS4 controller to be able to play games on both Steam and Epic games store but steam doesn't seem to be detecting it. I've tried ds4drv but I think can't get the permissions right. Anyone have a fix or similar problem? Been trying to find a solution all day. [link] [comments] |
Mount: /new_root: unknown file system type 'vfat' Posted: 21 Jan 2021 12:49 PM PST "You are now being dropped into an emergency shell" So it looks like my linux thinks that the partition I am trying to mount is vfat? I am very certain it is ext4 as I used this installation very recently. I dual boot and did also recently use Windows' 'reset' feature and it probably messed with bootup somehow. My boot manager seems to have survived. Is the problem fstab? Thanks *whoops, indeed it is trying to mountthe wrong partition. Is it possible that windows added a partition at the beginning of the drive and increase the number of the rest of the partitions? I do not remember having two small partitions before the main Windows one, and it is trying to mount the one before my filesystem. Arch Thanks very much! [link] [comments] |

Creating a Boot USB that can still transfer files Posted: 21 Jan 2021 08:58 AM PST I have a 256GB Keychain flash drive I would like to be a be able to do 3 things with. 1. Install a live boot Linux OS (36 GB) 2. Have persistence so I can install programs and save files on the OS (110 GB) 3. Have a partition on the drive that still functions as a regular USB for file transfer between Windows 10, Linux, Mac OS. (110 GB) Is this possible? If so can you link a good tutorial forum/youtube video? [link] [comments] |
What else can I add to a terminal configuration? Posted: 21 Jan 2021 01:46 AM PST I know you can set font, font size and colors in a config file. What else? Can I set ascii messages or randomize colors every time I open it? Dates, total characters? Example I saw searching images [link] [comments] |
I can access autofs shares, but I cannot see them in filesystem Posted: 21 Jan 2021 07:05 AM PST This is my first nfs / autofs configuration, so I probably configured something wrong. When I navigate to directory, which I added to /etc/auto.master I can't see any mount points, but when I issue cd with full path to expected mount point, than it turnes out, that I can access it. I think, that outputs below are self explanatory: This is how /etc/auto.master file looks like (on the receiver machine). First two lines comes by default, so I was not sure if I should touch them: And this is how /etc/auto.misc looks like (first line comes by default): Can anyone please help me debug this problem? Windows 7 KVM requires signed virtio drivers. Posted: 21 Jan 2021 06:40 AM PST Not sure if this goes here, but here I am. So the point is, I have created a Windows 7 KVM, or just KVM with a Windows 7 ISO because I cannot add virtio drivers in advanced installation mode. If I install the viostor driver manually through system repair, it installs perfectly fine, but it refuses to boot because the viostor driver is unsigned. The virtio driver ISO from fedoraproject.com. Edit: Forgot to mention, I am on Manjaro Linux. [link] [comments] |
How to get Terminal & calendar permanently on desktop? Posted: 21 Jan 2021 02:44 AM PST Hey there! I'm new to linux and just got on Manjaro with Gnome and I have a question. I keep seeing these screenshots of people's desktops with a terminal or a terminal calendar embedded in the desktop. It looks super useful and I downloaded Calcurse, but I couldn't find a way to "stick" it to the desktop. How can I embed/stick/autorun terminal and a terminal calendar permanently to the desktop? Is there a way to do this in Gnome at all or do I need another desktop environment? Thank you! [link] [comments] |
LG UltraFine 5K support on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with Titan Ridge AIC Posted: 21 Jan 2021 03:12 AM PST I'm trying to use two LG UltraFine 5k monitors on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS at native 5K resolution and have tried several workarounds without any progress. System specs: - Gigabyte Aorus Master x570 rev 1.2 (F31 BIOS) - Titan Ridge rev 2.0 Thunderbolt AIC - AMD Ryzen 5900x - EVGA RTX 3070 XC3 Ultra - Linux 5.11 kernel - LG UltraFine 27MD5KL-B (the newer USB-C compatible version) What I've tried:
Other remarks:
The unknown chipset error disappeared after installing the NVIDIA drivers. At this point, I'm not sure what else to try, other than combing for any missed StackExchange threads or looking more into the boot warning messages. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |
