Daily workflow since switching to Linux Posted: 11 Jan 2021 08:33 AM PST
Linux is amazing, and the complete customization of everything is certainly what is keeping me here, but my "actual work" productivity is pretty much zero in the ramp up. Make the switch, just make sure you have time! [link] [comments] |
Somethings I've learned while using Linux Posted: 10 Jan 2021 08:11 PM PST In the effort to expand my skill set I've discovered that in certain circumstances, I prefer setting things up from the ground up. I also seem to take notes more about certain commands and steps required in OneNote more in the event I need to start over. I also seem a bit more relaxed when working on linux stuff even thou some of it is frustrating. I'm still not at the place where I think I could this professionally yet, but I feel like I'm getting there slowly. [link] [comments] |
Time to buy a New Linux Laptop! :D Posted: 11 Jan 2021 06:24 AM PST Hi, Same question that has been posted a million times. And I think a worthwhile question. I've been having success recently buying HP laptops with the aluminum case. I get a lot of years out of them. Like 4 or 5. And I can usually get a good one inexpensively. The new program has less requirements because I want the laptop to just be more like a thin client to my servers. I want everything to be synced. And I'm not using this laptop as it's own server anymore. Something I had to do while I was learning, that was the test machine. Now I don't do that to my poor laptops anymore. It just needs email, web, terminal, and networking capabilities. Games would be a cool addition! Did anyone figure out this whole ARM technology thing of a tablet type thing with the incredible battery life? Any thoughts are appreciated! [link] [comments] |
"Activation of network connection failed" in Pop OS 20.10 Posted: 11 Jan 2021 10:31 AM PST Hi, I just installed this Linux distro. But I can't connect, even though my internet is fine. How do I bring my connection back? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Jan 2021 01:51 PM PST Raspbian GNU/Linux 10 (buster) Good day after running update && upgrade, i rebooted and now I'm locked out of the ability to SSH into my pi for a period of time where it states: "System is booting up. Unprivileged users are not permitted to log in yet. Please come back later. For technical details, see pam_nologin(8)." What can I do to stop this SSH login lag? Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Jan 2021 10:01 AM PST Note: I'm on pop-os 20.04. I have a second SSD that I use for media. When I set up my steam library folders to point to install games on my second SSD, it only remains valid until I turn off my PC. The SSD also only appears once I've opened it in my file manager... How does one fix this? Any help welcome, thanks! [link] [comments] |
Best Distro for a beginner looking for privacy? Posted: 11 Jan 2021 01:33 PM PST Hello everyone, I want to switch to Linux after being really frustrated with Windows 10's bloatware, lack of privacy for information, and wanting some more customizability. My biggest hobbies that I need my computer (my at-home gaming pc/primary computer) really boil down to just gaming and coding for school. I'm looking for a distro that a) I can use for daily use, b) won't be missing too much of the compatibility for games, and C) has a big point of privacy. Vanilla Ubuntu seems like the best choice for me right now, possibly Kodachi Linux as well. However, I have heard that since Ubuntu is closed source, it has it's own issues with user privacy. PureOS seems like a strong option as well, and maybe Trisquel as well. Any and all help is appreciated, thank you! Edit: I should also note I have an Nvidia GPU so support for Nvidia drivers is important. [link] [comments] |
Debian 10 doesn't show wireless wifi Posted: 11 Jan 2021 01:30 PM PST When I turned on my linux, the wifi didn't appear anymore, before it was working perfectly, even If i go on wifi connections it just say there's no device available. Cable works fine. Any help would be great, thanks. [link] [comments] |
Replacing a disk, anything I've forgotten? Posted: 11 Jan 2021 05:40 AM PST I'm probably just paranoid, but want to make sure lol. Basically I just bought a 14TB disk to replace my full 8TB one. It's not the OS disk or part of a RAID. So IIRC:
To any of my programs etc. the new drive should be entirely indistinguishable from the old one then, right? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Jan 2021 12:47 PM PST Hello again! Can anyone recommend me a dvd ripper for linux? (preferably free, but I will hand over cashy money if it keeps developers going). I have been using an ancient version of Dvd Fab when I was using windows, but now need an alternative since I switched os....(I need a ripper and burner as dvds are an easier format for older relatives) Thanks in advance :) [link] [comments] |
The newest Nvidia driver "460" isn't working properly on my Mint 20.1 install Posted: 11 Jan 2021 12:19 PM PST Hey all, after recent news that the older Linux Nvidia drivers had security flaws that meant upgrading to the 460 driver was recommended, I immediately went to update. However, after updating to 460, I found that the driver wasn't working properly. Hardware acceleration was on, the resolution was all skewed, and the refresh rate was stuck at 76. It overall just seemed like there was no driver installed in the first place. I've been working to try and figure this out for a while now, with no avail. I've tried purging Nvidia from my system with no luck. Everything is up to date. The 450 driver works just fine, always has. I've also tried switching HDD's, to check for a hardware issue. I put in a HDD with nothing on it, installed Mint, then installed the 460 driver. Worked like a charm. So clearly there is something wrong with my install here that's messing with the 460 driver that I just cannot figure out. My specs: Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon, Cinnamon version 4.8.5, Kernel version 5.10.6 Intel Core i7-8700k 16gb of memory Geforce GTX 1080 I appreciate any help! I'm really stuck here [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Jan 2021 02:35 AM PST Hey guys, I just found this distro called Linuxfx on distrowatch and tried downloading it but everywhere I found, it seems they have removed all download links. I went on their website to try there but the ISO is locked behind their "donation" link of minimum $15. Anyone else got an alternate link and is that legal to lock their ISO behind some sort of paywall even if its running under Debian? [link] [comments] |
Printer friendly list of Linux system commands Posted: 11 Jan 2021 12:17 PM PST I'd like to have a printed physical copy on Linux system commands for study and easy reference, I'm just not sure where to find a printer friendly version. Any leads? [link] [comments] |
Having trouble connecting a bluetooth headphones on lubuntu laptop Posted: 11 Jan 2021 12:04 PM PST I recently installed lubuntu on a laptop. Is there any resource that visualize the entire communication process som client to server? Posted: 11 Jan 2021 08:07 AM PST I think it would be extremely helpful to have a complete resource that include every single step from the point of a client requesting a web resource to receiving it and the connection closing. In the right order and with proper visualizations this would help immensely on getting a good overview of how computers communicate today. Does anybody know of a resource close to what I'm looking for? I've found a lot of information regarding each specific topic but I find myself trying to stitch everything together to get a complete picture

Posted: 11 Jan 2021 08:02 AM PST Have Linux installed on a drive in the SD card slot of an old MacBook Air so I can run both OS's. This screen appears when booting Linux: Oddly, I should need to press option while powering on to select Linux but Linux will boot automatically. Pressing option during power on results in the same screen. Perhaps unrelated, but Linux struggles to wake from sleep and either will present the sign in page but not allow any text to be entered or immediately presents this screen: Any suggestions? Posted: 11 Jan 2021 11:45 AM PST Hi, thanks for reading, I have been setting up GNU/Icecat on my main machine, disabled the javascript blockers because I intend to use it as my main browser. The problem I have is that duckduckgo doesn't work properly with the search bar, if I seach something, it just redirects me to the main page of duckduckgo, without searching what I asked. Also, in the configuration, as you may know, Icecat doesn't let you add search engines nor modify the preinstalled ones, just remove some of them, so I can't edit the duckduckgo one, and I'm forced to use google since with google it works correctly. It is also important to highlight that it redirects me to the html version of duckduckgo if that is useful information, but I don't know if that is the root of the problem (I can't change that tho). Do you guys know how to solve this?, anyone with Icecat as their main browser? Thank you in advance for reading all of these, any help would be really appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Dual Boot with 2 HD's and 1 SSD. Posted: 11 Jan 2021 11:40 AM PST Per the title, I've been running a dual boot (Windows 10 and Endeavor Arch Linux) on my PC with the standard 500G HD that came with the computer. I recently received an SSD (240GB) and I scrapped a 320GB hard drive from a busted laptop. The Windows side is for the small bit of gaming I do and the Linux is for everyday use and fun. I was thinking about using the SSD for gaming, one HD for Linux and the other for files and secondary backups. Does this sound ideal? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Jan 2021 05:37 AM PST My computer is dual booting windows 10 and manjaro, and my home directory is on another partition. A couple days ago i rebooted after an update and found that i could not boot into linux. To fix this i ended up installing another edition of manjaro and mounted the same home partition. After the fresh install i was able to boot into linux a couple of times before it started getting stuck on boot again. I followed this https://classicforum.manjaro.org/index.php?topic=30691.0 and when removing "quiet" and adding "3" was able to boot in without the gui and updating the system. This post https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/116615/usbhid-cant-find-input-interrupt-endpoint suggest that it is ether the mouse or keyboard causing it, though i find this weird as there has never been a problem before. I am wondering if there might be some config file in my home directory that is causing the issue since it should be a completely fresh install. Help would be appreciated! :) [link] [comments] |

Unable to find my NVIDIA card on system Posted: 11 Jan 2021 06:09 AM PST Distro: Ubuntu 20.04.1 My computer is a 2019 base model Razer Blade with an RTX 2060. And intel graphics. I run duel boot with Windows 10. -------------------- My problem is that I am trying to locate my Nvidia card on system, but I only seem to be able to find the Intel one. Running:
Results in:
No Nvidia card. I also ran:
And got: Once again, no Nvidia. No result with I noticed this problem when trying to use Nvidia drivers. Having looked online I saw someone mention 'enabling the card at BIOS', but when I tried to find such an option I was unable. Another post mentioned a hardware issue, but that makes little sense to me as the card is fully detectable and runs perfectly fine when I boot windows. The problem is therefore Ubuntu. I'll take any ideas at this point. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 11 Jan 2021 09:46 AM PST Hello, I had another question, I read that if I want to play RS6 and some other games that won't run via Wine or Proton I would need to do a GPU Passthrough or Dual Boot the difficulty of these aside which would you recommend? I've seen that the former seems to be the better choice overall but I don't know much about it either way. Thanks a lot. [link] [comments] |
