Would 64gb of ram be worth it, even the slightest bit

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 07:43 AM PST

Im contemplating if i should go with 64GB instead of 32GB for my first PC build. Im probably going to go with 32, but if there is any benefit to getting more, I'll gladly do it. I've heard so many times that 16gb is enough for gaming, but i rather have more so i can run other stuff on another monitor like YouTube, google, SoundCloud, discord, or just afk on a Minecraft farm if that's possible. Im not concerned about the money aspect of it. Im going to be running AMD 9 5900x with a RTX 3080 BTW.

I finished my build after a month and also probably won "biggest idiot" price for it!

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 01:47 PM PST

I had built my PC at the beginning of December but I didn't realize that there are literally no GPUs on the market so I rolled with my old GTX 770 2GB while spamming F5 in shops everyday, not only to stumble onto something that is actually available but also at a price that I can pay without having to sell my wife and son to human traffickers.

Finally after a month I landed Gigabyte RTX 3070 Vision. Extremally pumped I teared the box apart and started to install it only to found out that... I can't install it. Length was OK for my case but no matter what I did, it would just not fit into PCIE slot. Yup, I thought, after all of this. Busted card. Crooked PCIE... or maybe busted mobo, even better. I tried couple more times, used force, if it breaks so be it (I was pretty pissed). Then I just give up, took the card out and went for the box to pack it and send it back. While putting it into box - guess what, you probably guessed it - there is big, plastic, black protective plug on PCIE connector.

Who almost broke his card and mobo trying to fit chunk of protective plastic into PCIE slot???

    This guy! 👉🤡👈

Good Lord, are all discrete GPU’s backlogged???

    Posted: 10 Jan 2021 09:27 PM PST

My 9-year old has been begging me for a PC for over a year. We tried bootcamp on an old MBP but that's just not cutting it. It's been almost 10 years since I've built a PC myself so I thought it would be fun to do with him.

He's mostly just into Minecraft right now but would like to have some wiggle room for other games. I got everything ready in my Amazon cart to ship this week...everything except a GPU. I've been hearing the new high-end ones have been hard to get but I didn't realize even the mid to low end ones were back ordered too. This is crazy. I'm getting the Corei5-9400 with integrated graphics so I'm assuming that should be ok for Mincraft till we can get a discrete GPU.

Any ideas/recommendations for a GPU In the $200-250 range?

    GPU not arrived.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 03:44 AM PST

I ordered all my pc parts at the end of November and they arrived at the start of December. Everything but by GPU had arrived. I still haven't received my GPU due to the current stock issues. The return date on my other parts is coming soon. I don't mind waiting to use my PC properly but is there a cheap alternate that I can buy just to test if my parts work and to download OS. Something so I can just see the pc on my monitor.

Pc working but fans aren't spinning

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 05:19 AM PST

After a long mixup of cables, i was able to complete my build but after i booted up the system, the cpu cooler fan and the power supply's fan didn't work. The system was working but the fans weren't spinning. It was a pre built pc where i added a few new parts and added some old ones. The power supply is new, motherboard is new as well. The processor and the cpu cooler is old. The cpu cooler has 5 pin slots while the motherboard has 4. I just connected the motherboard outside the case and a few essential cables. I need help a bit urgently

    PC won't boot.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 11:07 AM PST

Update: I disconnected the rgb cables and the fans all begun to spin so I figured everything was fine. As I was trying to troubleshoot the issues with my monitor to make something appear the aio tubing seems to have ripped itself off and exploded leaking coolant all over the bottom of my case and I'm not sure how much of it got onto the motherboard. As thet happened and I heard the explosion immediately saw smoke rising from the top of the case so I went and turned off everything. Right now I'm trying to just salvage what I can to either reuse or return or throw away. Thanks for everyone trying to help but it seems it was all a bust anyway.

I recently made a new rig and wanted to boot it up for the first time today. I plugged in the PSU and decided to try everything on and when I do all it does is turn on all the rgb on the motherboard, ram and fans tuen on and then it shuts right back off. I don't think I shorted anything out tho because after that happens the rgb on my motherboard remains on and so does the ram rgb only the fans turn off. The fans are not spinning either so I'm not sure what exactly the problem is. I have a z490 rog strix mobo, G skill trident rgb 32gb ram and a the masterfan m120r argb case fan and my case is the lian li pc-011 dynamic xl. If anyone can help me try to figure out what's wrong it would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: the power supply is a corsair rmx 1000w one

Edit: here is a visual of what is happening

What should I look for with my budget.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 11:43 AM PST

I want to keep my cut off near $1k its not a hard cut off but I want to stay close. Things I want to get.

    2 Monitors (1080p and 1440p)

    Arm for monitors

    Case

    SSD

    HDD (at least 3tb)

    Bluetooth adapter

    Wifi Adapter

    Cpu Cooler

    16gb ram

    Motherboard

    Windows

    Psu

With all that already is it realistic that I can get a gpu and cpu that can run 1440p at a solid 60 and stay close to my 1k mark. If so what combos should I look at. Also monitor wise what might be my best option. I want 1080p 144hz for faster paced games but 1440p for more visual games.

My 3080 was severely underperfoming. Here's what I did to fix it. [Spoiler, it was the Asus GPU Tweak II that finally did it].

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 02:21 PM PST

Good day to all. This is going to be along post, but I've done a million billion google searches to fix my 3080. When I finally managed to get it working, I decided to write a post to answer all the questions I had while messing around with it. I'm not a very seasoned PC builder, I built some system in the early 2000's with my dad and then took a long break. So this is a noob to noob story about my 3080. I still have unanswered questions, I'd love to hear some ideas on what is and was going on.

So I had a 1080Ti system that ran great, but I wanted to get in on all the Ray Tracing stuff with the 3000 series. I got lucky and scored a 3080 (TUF-RTX3080-O10G-GAMING) for my computer in December. I installed it with a little help from my cat and booted up some games. Much to my dismay, I was not getting nowhere near the performance upgrade I was looking for. Of course I did not expect to get triple the performance that I had from my old 1080Ti, but seeing 0-10% improvement in framerates while playing AAA games was a disappointing.

Here's what I'm running at 1440p, all eye candy on ultra or high, except for motion blur and film grain that I always turn off.

So I was trying some different games and... Well It was disappointing. I got basically minimal boost to my FPS compared to the brave little 1080Ti I had. I tried Raytracing and uhh. Well It worked, just not all that great in terms of performance. Control was having issues with the DLSS, it took seconds to render full quality assets when I turned the camera and the framerate was around 50 to 60. It was very annoying to see the DLSS pop in. Assassins Creed Origins went from 70 to 77 fps Ghostrunner was unplayable with RTS on and Cyberpunk 2077 dipped to the forties more often than not.

So here's some of the stuff I did.

    - I ran 3D Mark Time Spy Extreme

The results were underwhelming. I was way behind the average result on a similar system. My previous score with the 1080Ti was just over 9000 and the brand new 3080 managed an around 13 000 score. I also run Unigine Superposition benchmark with around 11 000 score. That was on par with 1080ti systems when I checked online. 3D mark showed my GPU utilisation fluctuating between 40% to 80% range, only occasionally hitting 100% very briefly. The GPU temps remained in the low sixties.

So my 3080 wasn't getting enough data to chew through I thought.

-I bought a Watt meter for my computer to see how much power my system was consuming.

Turns out it was about 360 Wats for the entire system, including the CPU and all the other stuff connected to the MOBO at peak loads. That is WAY less than it should be

-I updated the BIOS on the GPU from the manufacturer

-I uninstalled my previous Nvidia drivers with DDU and reinstalled the latest drivers from a downloaded installer instead of Geforce

-I updated my Windows and checked the power settings

    - I checked my RAM

And then I remembered that I had previously seen that my dual channel memory that was rated at 3200mhz showed up on Hwinfo to be running at 1066mhz(Dual Channel mode of course). I really hadn't worried about that at all with my 1080Ti, since everything was running to spec or better and the only thing limiting my system was the thermals on the card. It was a Zotac mini with only two fans that I got on the cheap when I built the system. With that card everything was great and the card sat at 83c while gaming. The 3080 was a different story.

I tried to just enable XMP, didn't work. I just got a boot loop and it reverted back to default.

-I Updated the BIOS to the latest stable version

No luck with the XMP. So I wen't and studied for a while on how to configure RAM. I got it running stable with the RAM at 3000mhz. I also changed the RAM from slots A1 and B1 to A2 and B2 since apparently that's somehow preferred. I enabled a bit of overclocking while I was at it in the BIOS.

This got me drawing around 420 Wats of full system power draw at peak power and some performance gains in most tests I did with games and benchmarks, but still not quite what I was after all this hassle. For a while I thought that the manual switch on the board toggling between "Silent" and "Performance" mode might have been broken and the card was trying to be quiet while I just wanted it to go full blast.

Some more Googling and I found GPUZ. I downloaded it and booted the benchmarks again. It turns out that I was Power Limited all the time when the GPU was spooling up to do some serious work. I had previously monitored it from a really dumb point of view and had drawn some weird conclusions.

Ok, so the thing needed more power. What to do?

-I realized that I was running it with a single 8 pin connector from the PSU that spilt in to two tho power the card.

I changed that to two separate cables. It did pretty much nothing, but at least I don't have to worry about fire anymore.

The problem was, I needed to get more power to the card.

-I figured out that there could be a software solution

I had heard of MSI Afterburner, but since it was an Asus card, I downloaded the GPU Tweak II from Asus. I set it to auto OC, let it do its thing for half an hour and enabled the OC mode it had picked. After that, everything worked just great. The benchmark results were just the way they should be with 100% utilisation, the temps on the GPU got to around 77c at max load and the power draw for my entire system jumped from 420W to 480W. GPUZ still shows me power limited, but it also shows that the GPU clocks are around 1950-1995mhz under load at pretty much the whole time.

The weird thing is that the GPU Tweak 2 tells me that it OC:d the card by 30mhz and the boost clock is now 1815mhz according to the program. It also increased my power draw by 7% above 100%. So I'm not sure what's going on with it but everything works now, so I'm happy.

It's always good to mess around with several games before and after trouble shooting, since the fault is not always in the system, sometimes it's the game. I tried my setup with dozen or so games and got it working to spec with almost every other game except a few.

For the really hard hitters, Control, Metro Exodus, Cyberpunk 2077 all run fine now. Control even manages to do almost perfectly stable 60FPS with RTX maxed and no DLSS. And DLSS works better now than it used to. There is some artefacting and pop in, but way less than before and it runs at 100fps with DLSS enabled. I did die a lot in my testing before getting to the most intensive scenes though, so there might be dips to lower scores in the most intense situations.

All in all, I'm still hesitant to post exact benchmarks since I don't have the expertice to provide reliable scores like say Gamers Nexus does.

Two games were all weird though.

Outer Wilds with Vsync on with my Samsung Odyssey G7 (240hz) is all weird. It wildly fluctuates from 35 to 270 FPS and is pretty much unplayable. With Vsync off, it stays at 220-330 FPS range but of course cranks up my GPU to the max at all times. I would not wish to play this on a hot summers day.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is just unplayable. 22-50 FPS no matter what I tried so far. It worked fine on my 1080Ti, I guess I'll have to reinstall it and see to it again.

Ghostrunner is still kinda iffy with RTX on, but I played it at 100fps without RTX on. It's such a high tempo game that it might be just me getting all weirded out at 60fps RTX on.

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to tell you this saga, since I've seen so many complaints about underperforming 3080 cards.

Getting closer to building my gaming PC, could use your eyes and brains!

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 10:55 AM PST

Could someone please look over my list and tell me if there's anything I should change? Anything I'm overspending on, or anything I should upgrade?

I'm building a gaming PC and my goal is 144fps 1440p on games like Apex, CoD Warzone, and other less demanding titles.

I wouldn't want to go higher than $2000 for the PC unless it's worth the jump as I'll also be need to purchase peripherals (M&K, Monitor, Capture card for streaming with a PC I already own).

    Thanks in advance!

AMD Ryzen box arrived damaged... how durable is the CPU!?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 03:40 PM PST

So I ordered an AMD Ryzen 3700x off of Amazon for C$397 (incl. shipping + tax), with Amazon as the seller... from what I can tell, there didn't appear to be any 3rd party vendor.

The box was just shipped to me in a plastic bag, which seems pretty strange for a higher-value item. The package just arrived today, and when I opened it, I saw that all of the corners of the AMD box have been slightly damaged and pressed in (one corner was even slightly ripped).

When I contacted Amazon about this, the offered me an $80 discount to keep the item... I guess they don't like to deal with returns if they don't have to? That brings my average cost to around C$317 for the CPU.

My question is: should I be worried about the actual CPU being damaged? When I opened the box it seems to be fine. Would there be any sort of internal damage from it being banged around in transport? I'm a bit worried.

    Thanks!!

Want to build PC - ready for RTX 3080(Ti) when it's available.

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 07:42 AM PST

Right now there is a massive surge of graphics cards but I have the opportunity to buy old gtx1080 from a friend. It's not a perfect scenario but what can I do. At least I could use this rig for work while patiently waiting for delivery.

It would be my first PC in years, I had only laptops with Intel HD for work and consoles like Switch or PS4.

Is this enough for decent 1440p 165hz Gaming? At least when I finally switch to 30XX series card.
I aim for recent AAA games. More FPS the better but solid 60Hz is still a good option (like in Cyberpunk with RTX on).

I am a programmer and I run a lot of VMs so I need ram and CPU, therefore 5950x.
    Do you have any suggestions?

    2021 B&W Ryzen 7 5800x & RTX 3070 Build Complete

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 09:29 AM PST

    Pics first: https://imgur.com/a/DqBtYud

Finished my gaming build and thought I'd share after lurking for quite a while now. Thanks to this sub for the inspiration and advice.

    Build: * Case: Corsair White 4000D Airflow * MOBO: Gigabyte Aorus x570 Elite * CPU: Ryzen 7 5800x * GPU: ASUS Dual RTX 3070 * PSU: RM750x * Memory: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32gb (8gb x 4) * Storage: 1 TB NVMe M.2 Samsung 970 Evo SSD + 1TB WD Blue SATA SSD * PSU Cooler: Corsair H100i Elite Capellix AIO * Fans: 4x - Corsair QL120 * OS: Windows 10 * Monitor: ASUS TUF Gaming VG27AQ * Keyboard: Ducky One 2 RGB * Mouse: Razer Basilisk

This was my first build, and I'm happy with how it came out. Only issues I had/have were finding a GPU (who would have thought), downloading Windows 10 to a flash drive using a Mac (finally gave up and drove to my sisters to use her Windows PC), and dealing with a busted QL120 fan that wouldn't change RPM's no matter what.

Not having another CPU, I was worried about having the flash my BIOS in order to use AMD 5000 series, but the Aorus Q-Flash made it SUPER easy. Also not in love with the lighting (blue to pink) on the GPU, but wasn't going to be picky.

Still dealing with some hot temps with the 5800x but the more I research the more I see other users having hot temps with this CPU. Benchmarking put me at 90C and I'm running Warzone at around 75C on average.

Any tips or advice is welcomed as I am new to ALL of this! Thanks for reading.

Should I cancel this order and build it instead?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 01:48 PM PST

My current machine is a 7700k and a GTX 1080. I use it pretty much exclusively for VR (HTC Vive), but the GPU is also helpful whenever I do a project related to machine learning. My machine has started struggling with the latest VR games, I need to run star wars squadrons on lowest settings to not get sick. I also want to upgrade to the valve index, and hopefully whatever the next generation of VR hardware is after that. It would be nice to have a GPU with tensor cores in it as well. I figured all this justified an upgrade to a machine with a 3080, and I had been looking into ways of getting one until I found and bought this about a week before christmas from ibuypower:

    Type Part Retail Price
Case Lian Li Lancool 2 $89
    Processor Ryzen 9 5900x $549
Processor Cooler IBUYPOWER 240mm AIO Not available, but I found some 240mm AIOs for ~$100
    Memory 16gb DDR4-3200 (8x2) $80
Graphics Card RTX 3080 (whatever brand they have when they build it) $699
    Motherboard Gigabyte X570 Gaming X $183
    Storage 1TB WD Blue SN550 NVMe $105

    Total retail price: $1805

    What I paid: $2067

I got this price due to a $300 christmas sale, 5% promo code, and the RAM was free due to a daily deal.

When I made this chart originally I decided that the $250 up charge was worth it since I'm not really interested in the whole building process, but since the 3080 and 5900x are both "pre-order items" it could be a few months before I actually get this machine. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to cancel the order and build it myself. Is there anything on this sheet that I could significantly downgrade at no cost to performace/longevity? If I cancelled and went through the building process do you think I could have my parts in the next couple months?

    Thanks for any advice.

Prebuilt pc does not have switch on power supply

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 10:15 AM PST

I am replacing the power supply in a prebuilt so that it can handle a better GPU. This is the model of the original one https://www.newegg.com/p/1YT-0002-003X0. However, all of the PSU's that I can order have power switches. I am confused since the prebuilt PC has its own power button. Will a power supply with a switch work? Should it stay on or off? Please let me know.

Built my PC (it worked) then upgraded PSU and it doesn't work! Please help!

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 11:38 AM PST

Hi there, I hope this post is OK for /r/buildapc since I'm still 'building' it.

TL;DR: I built my first PC 2 weeks ago. Due to the huge shortage of components, I built the PC with an old PSU and old Graphics Card, while waiting for new PSU and GPU to arrive.

Installing the new GPU worked no problem. Then when the new PSU arrived, I installed it and now the PC won't boot (won't post, etc.)

So that's the short version and here is the long version with details.

I decided to build my new PC after seeing the long lead times for online PC builders. I only knew of a couple big names; I'm sure there are other builders that maybe could do it faster. But I was up for the challenge since I'm into tech (even if I'm not good at it) This PC (the old one and new one) are used for Video editing as well as live "webinars" like streaming, but with multiple cameras and microphones connected to capture cards.

I purchased all my components on NewEgg, and was really surprised with the entire "OUT OF STOCK" situation! I even had the GPU I wanted to get, go out of stock while it was in my shopping cart, since I was shopping for RAM and a Case! In a matter of 30 min. to an hour, the GPU went out of stock!

Anyways, this matters because all of my components shipped from different places and arrived at different times. ESPECIALLY the new PSU and GPU.

I didn't want to wait, since there was only a shipping estimate for PSU/GPU and it was another 3 weeks after I got all the other components!

So I read some stuff here, and watched some YouTube videos (especially BitWit and Jayz2cents. Hilarious guys!)

I built the new PC (with the old PSU and GPU )and it worked great. It posted on the first try. I got everything set up how I wanted, got all my programs installed and was even back to editing some videos (using the old GPU of course)

    1) The NEW GPU arrived and of course I was anxious. I got it installed at the PC booted up perfectly and everything ran perfectly. I did some benchmarking and the new GPU is faster than the old GPU, but due to the market supply problem, it still isn't the GPU I eventually want.

    2) Two weeks later, the new PSU arrives. I wasn't in a huge hurry for this, since the new PC was working perfectly, including the new GPU. The new PSU was an upgrade: Gold to Platinum and more Wattage. It is also an EVGA brand whereas the old PSU is a Corsair. I didn't think the brand mattered, expect I think I found out a couple of the power connectors are different (as far as each pin--square versus the other shape) My "individually sleeved" Corsair cables did not ALL fit into the new EVGA power supply. (I think the Corsair PSU calls them 6x2PCIe & 4+4 CPU vs EVGA has 2 CPU connections and the rest are called "VGA". The EVGA PSU cables marked "CPU" only fit in the 8-pin CPU slots and NOT in the 8-pin VGA slots. The Corsair power supply does NOT accept the EVGA cables marked "VGA" into the Corsair's PCIe or CPU connections) I guess you all know that already, but that sort of confused me, I thought I was seeing things, so I decided to stop messing with the new PSU over the weekend.

Ok so now assume I have the new GPU and new PSU installed, and this is my approximate troubleshooting phase:

    - I press the power button and nothing.

    - I realized the motherboard wasn't glowing. (It has some RGB stuff that I never turned off, so the I/O board cover on the motherboard glows and changes color.)

    - I first thought the new PSU was bad. I did the normal stuff like checking all cables to ensure they were fully connected.

    - I checked every component connection, including CMOS battery. (RAM sticks, GPU, CPU fan (air cooled), etc. This was pretty much the limit of my knowledge, so I started looking at YouTube videos for everything else.

    - I turned OFF the EVGA (new PSU) power-saving mode which keeps the fan off at low load, and now the motherboard was 'glowing' so I felt comfortable that at least it was getting power.

    - The new EVGA PSU came with a tester (to simulate the paperclip test). I used it, and the PSU fan turned on, so the new EVGA PSU works.

    - I got worried and thought the new GPU got fried, so I swapped in the old GPU. Nothing.

    - I got more worried and put in the old PSU. Nothing.

    - I got frantic and tried combinations of New/Old PSU + New/Old GPU and nothing.

    - I double checked the 2-pin PWR button connection and it IS connected. And when I press the power button, I can hear the PSU make a 'click' but no fans turn on and no POST.

    - I have NOT done the 'start from scratch' thing where I take out all components one by one and add them back, because I didn't want to take apart the new PC, and because the only thing I changed was the PSU. :( But I will, I guess if I have to.

I have my PC connected to a fairly nice UPS, and I wore a static bracelet when working inside the case. (I upgraded to a super-static "Livestrong" bracelet that fights static AND cancer at the same time!) Hehehhe

My apologies for the novel. What should I do next?

I will take some photos and add them in to this post, but I wanted to type it all out first (and hope that someone out there is a genius and can tell me "Dude, you didn't do __________ !"

    New PC Stats:
    Define 7 case
    ROG X570-E MB
Ryzen 9 3950X (air cooled, Noctua)
32 GB Crucial Ballistix RAM, 3200
"Storage" (2) M.2 PCIe - Seagate Firecuda. No HDD and nor SSD.
    New GPU is Radeon 5700XT
Old GPU is EVGA GTX 1070 Ti
Old PSU was Corsair RM 850
    The above list worked!

Then I added the new PSU: EVGA 1000P2 and this is where it went bad, and wouldn't POST/BOOT/Startup/

The old GPU is an EVGA GTX 1070 Ti. Remember, I built the new PC (minus new GPU and PSU) and it worked -- I was running with the old GPU for a while. Then the new GPU came in, and that worked great too. The only thing missing was the new PSU.

It was then when I got the new PSU and hooked it up that I am having problems. I did the new PSU last Friday, and was getting frustrated so I dropped it for the weekend. I was running into power connector issues; I didn't realize different brand PSUs could use slightly different power connectors, and I was going crazy, not knowing if the connectors from Corsair ===> EVGA were different, or if I was going crazy, so that's when I stopped for the weekend. Today is 3 days later, and I have some more patience to fix this! :)

PSU side by side (not sure it matters)

Can I simply turn on my PC without a GPU?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 02:49 PM PST

Hi, I want to test if my GPU is causing my build to be loud, so my plan is to take it out and just launch the PC without it. I don't have an integrated GPU, but it shouldn't matter because I don't need to output anything to my monitor. I just want to turn it on and hear how it sounds. Is it safe to take out my GPU, turn on the PC, then turn it off?

Crucial and other companies just raised RAM prices by 16%

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 02:27 PM PST

I just noticed that the usual $150 kit of Crucial Ballistix 3600mhz cl16 (16x2) is now priced at $173.99, directly sold on their website.

Upon further browsing, G.skill also went up in price by 16% as well on Amazon. Guess the tariffs are affecting RAM now as well. I suppose this is more of a sign of things to come?

Much Difference Between EVGA 3060 Ti and 3070?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 12:10 PM PST

I'm trying to decide between the EVGA FTW3 3060 Ti and 3070 and did a comparison of the two on EVGA's website. Spec-wise they seem very similar, with the 3070 seemingly only marginally better for $200+ more. For someone that plays games at 1440p/144hz with some 3d modeling on the side would there be much of a noticeable difference between the two cards?

    Should I get a 3060 ti or 3070?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 12:01 PM PST

I managed to get hold of a 3060 ti that is arriving wither late this week or next week. I was thinking of selling it and then getting a 3070 to be more future proof. I do not have a 1440p monitor rn but I am planning on getting one in the future.

GPU/CPU recs to avoid stock issues and upgrade later?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 11:34 AM PST

I have been putting off buying that new rig since October because of the new hardware coming and now because nothing is available (and when it is, prices are ridiculous).

I'm used to play old game on low settings so I could live with an old GPU but after a quick check, I couldn't find anything readily available at MSRP. Is there something good out there that's worth buying?

For CPUs, the situation seems less bad. Sounds like an old Ryzen or going for Intel would work just fine? I was aiming for the new Ryzens but so far they are always 50% above MSRP... :(

What gpu to pair with Athlon 3000g?

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 03:22 AM PST

Alright so before you say anything about the cpu, I got it for free so I'm gonna use it for a while before upgrading (probably to something like a 2600 or 3600). What gpu would make a good pair for it? I was thinking about an rx 570 or 580, thoughts?

Advice on my first PC build / Incompatibility

    Posted: 11 Jan 2021 12:20 PM PST

Hi, so I'm planning my first build and would appreciate feedback/help. I'm borrowing my friends GPU until I can get a 3080.

Also, PC partpicker says there's a warning on compatibility and as a complete noob i'd appreciate someone explaining it.. it says "Some AMD X570 chipset motherboards may need a BIOS update prior to using Vermeer CPUs. Upgrading the BIOS may require a different CPU that is supported by older BIOS revisions."

    My build is...

    CPU: Ryzen 9 5900x

CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i RGB Platinum

    Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix X570-E

Memory: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16GB DDR4-3600 CL18

Storage: Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME SSD

Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080

Case: Phanteks Eclipse P500A D-RGB ATX Mid Tower Case

PSU: Corsair RMx White 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATC Power Supply
