Can Windows viruses affect the Linux partition or vice versa? Posted: 25 Jan 2021 09:06 AM PST I've read online that viruses that work on Windows will not work on Linux and vice versa which makes sense since these OSes work very differently. But if, for example, some virus affected the drive that Windows is stored in on a more fundamental level (e.g. ransomware encrypting the drive), would a Linux partition on that drive also get affected? Posted: 25 Jan 2021 05:17 AM PST Good day! As the title says, I'm considering on switching to Linux from Windows 10 because of the so called freedom, customization and learning it can provide, as well as the light weight it has, but I want to ask... Do anyone feel like it's worth it? Also, if it is, what should I do before switching to Linux, which Distro is recommended, and what should I get/research in order to make the experience more interesting? [link] [comments] |
Ubuntu is Making the ‘Home’ Folder Private in 21.04 Posted: 24 Jan 2021 09:04 PM PST https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2021/01/private-home-directory-in-ubuntu-21-04 What does that mean exactly? Does that mean that if someone uses a liveUSB on my laptop, they won't be able to access my 'Home' folder, not without my password? [link] [comments] |

Ubuntu 20.10 not starting gui. Posted: 25 Jan 2021 08:31 AM PST Hi linux4noobs community. I have just installed ubuntu and needed to reboot to install the updates. After rebooting there was only blinking cursor. Made some research and figured out to login via console using alt+f4, and typing "sudo systemctl restart gdm3" solves my problem. But I have to repeat this on every boot. How can i start this automatically? What do you suggest me to do? thanks for your time! [link] [comments] |

I am having trouble with my uefi noticing my linux install. Posted: 25 Jan 2021 11:43 AM PST Hey, I am just getting started with arch linux. I've used the zen installer to help me with the process, and i've had a succesful install, i think. It's just that my uefi does not recognize the harddrive to boot. I do not want a bootloader installed and i just want to select which harddrive i want to boot from. I have tried adding a fat 32 partition, per the arch wiki to have my uefi to recognize it, and in gparted i cannot create a fat32 partition. i also have a nvme drive so i cant unplug all my drives to force a boot on my linux ssd any other advice? Posted: 25 Jan 2021 11:43 AM PST So I wanna know how the live booting from USB works. Like I've seen on internet like an OS needs 2gigs/4gigs of minimum ram to work(minimum requirement) .So how does that work while I'm using a live USB for system testing. Does it use my system ram for running the OS or it uses the remaining space of pendrive. Also like I mentioned remaining pendrive space, how does a system use hardisk space automatically as ram when the system is using a large amount of the actual ram memory. Pls explain me about it. Posted: 25 Jan 2021 11:29 AM PST As title says.. Any easier (maybe even free) solutions? I don't want to risk getting locked out of my own server. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jan 2021 10:45 AM PST I want to streamline the process but I can't figure out how to tell bash to use preconfigured inputs (An account name to set up as admin, that accounts password, entering 'y' at a certain prompt, etc). [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jan 2021 10:34 AM PST So, I am using Ubuntu 20.04 on my main pc and am using it for distance learning. I have my pc running on a power bar and from time to time accidentally push the switch with my foot. Whenever this happens, everything works except for the webcam, which stops showing up in lsusb or in google meet, and dmesg | grep -i "Camera" shows nothing. I remember that I managed to fix it last time, but have no idea how I did it and could not find the same problem online. I tried sudo modprobe uvcvideo because it said it wasn't loaded, to no effect, installed cheese, nothing, the standard unplug and replug In a new port, which did nothing, rebooted chrome and the whole pc, not a darned thing, so I figured reddit might help. Posted: 25 Jan 2021 02:09 PM PST I dual boot Ubuntu Studios 19.10 (primary) and Windows 10 (secondary) on two separate Kingston SSD's. Until about a month ago I would use the boot selection when booting to pick my Windows drive when desired. One day I did this and after picking the drive, it froze on my motherboard screen after a brief black screen. It went from always working to never working for seemingly no reason. Also, it is worth noting that there is no critical data on my Windows drive, I have considered re-installing windows but I have not yet done that. Here are some things I have tried already: - Installed HDD Sentinel: I thought maybe one of my drives are failing, but they are at 97%(Windows) and 99% (Ubuntu) health. - Hard restart / clear power from my PC - I tried switching the boot order in my BIOS settings: My PC still booted to Ubuntu. My Windows drive is not highlighted in the BIOS like my Ubuntu and my storage drive are. However, the Windows drive still appears as mountable on my Ubuntu desktop and I can even view the file directories. Thank you for taking the time to read my post; any help is much appreciated! I can provide more information if needed. [link] [comments] |
Dual-booting Windows on C drive, Ubuntu on D Drive? Posted: 25 Jan 2021 02:08 PM PST Hi, I'm looking to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows, however, I'm looking to do a sort of non-standard thing: My (Windows 10) machine (An Hp 255 G7) has two SSDs, one which came in the machine, and one I swapped the optical disk drive to put in. That one currently serves as my D drive. I don't use the D drive one much, and both drives are 250GB drives. I was wondering if it would be possible to install Ubuntu on the D drive and keep the Windows install on the C drive. Is what I'm looking to do possible? I imagine I'd have to create a partition on the C drive to hold Grub, would that cause an issue? [link] [comments] |
Cycling Machine Fedora 10 Software Failure Posted: 25 Jan 2021 02:01 PM PST Hello! I want to start this post by saying I am computer savvy but not a pro by any means. I have no experience with Linux at all. I have recently been given two cycling machines for free. They are both Expresso Su3's running Fedora 10 on proprietary hardware. Both machines did not work when I received them. One of them is experiencing a software issue and the other a screen failure. I was able to swap screens to get one working machine. The other machine is displaying an error during its system file check (link to pictures of the error screen provided below). I was informed by Expresso's customer support that the only option to fix the bike would be to send them the entire computer, to which they would provide a very costly diagnosis and repair. The technician seemed to agree that it was a software issue and quoted me $300 for the software reinstall. I cannot access the Bios because it is password restricted. The machine will not boot or go into any recovery mode whatsoever. Since I do have a working machine, I would like to know if it is possible to completely copy the operating system and accompanying files on to a new drive and replace the old one. The company will not distribute any software whatsoever. If so, would it be as simple as copying the hard drive over and plugging it in? I have been hesitant to move any hardware within the working machine as they are very expensive and I would hate to break the one working machine. Additionally, there is a USB plugged into each machine via a USB extension cable behind the monitor. Curiously, the broken machine's USB seems to have melted. It looks like some sort of WIFI adapter but I am wondering if it is an authentication device whose malfunction is hindering the machines performance. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time! PICTURES OF THE HARDWARE AND ERROR SCREEN: https://imgur.com/a/eGTxs6V TLDR;

Pass a Regex pattern to Rofi's dmenu and combine it with user's input Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:48 PM PST Does the Rofi have an option to match only certain part of the line string before generate the menu? I would like to emulate hotkeys that has 2 letters. When I press the combination, that is unique in the list, I'd like Rofi select that line immediately, without hit enter. For example: echo -e "[ls]\nls -[la]\nls -l [ll]\n[ca]t\nflameshot [fm]" | rofi -dmenu -p command -format s -auto-select -matching regex -no-click-to-exit will generate this menu: when I type rofi should select the first line and return. Instead, it filter the matching lines: I know that using option I could type the regex expression to select exactly what I what. But since I'm going to run this command indirectly using a golang program to mount the rofi command. I have to tell rofi to combine the Regex passed (before rofi executes) and the user input. any idea how to do this? [link] [comments] |
Multiple installations of Python? Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:37 PM PST Hi all, noob here. I recently tried updating python, and seem to be having some trouble. I installed python 3.9.1, but I may have installed it in the wrong place? I'm currently running a native Zorin install. Here's the input/output when I check versions for py, python and python3: me@mycomputer:~$ python -V Python 2.7.17 me@mycomputer:~$ python3 -V Python 3.9.1 me@mycomputer:~$ py -V Pythonpy ??? Python 3.6.9 me@mycomputer:~$ pip -V pip 20.3.4 from /home/mycomputer/.local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/pip (python 2.7) me@mycomputer:~$ pip3 -V pip 20.2.3 from /usr/local/lib/python3.9/site-packages/pip (python 3.9) Should I uninstall python 3.6 and reinstall 3.9 to a different location? I'm assuming I should keep version 2.7 since my OS may need it to run certain files? Thanks! [link] [comments] |

However, I've been trying the most to get it running, such as installing .Net frameworks and whatnot. Can anyone take a look and try to see if it can be ran? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 25 Jan 2021 02:49 AM PST Hello, what is currently a working way to create a working virtual webcam? I tried v4l2loopback with ffmpeg. But this only works in some applications like firefox, but not in chromium/electron-based applications. The application might show the webcam as an option but the stream cannot be loaded or the cam isn't even picked up. ``` sudo modprobe v4l2loopback devices=1 video_nr=10 card_label="LoopbackCam" exclusive_caps=1 ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i ~/Videos/working.mp4 -f v4l2 -vcodec rawvideo -pix_fmt yuv420p /dev/video10 ``` [link] [comments] |
Can't connect to server ssh or otherwise Posted: 25 Jan 2021 06:12 AM PST So I'm trying out RHEL 8.3 on my mini PC that I'm going to use for containers for plex, pihole, and etc. but I'm having issues. I installed the server version with the headless management(Cockpit management panel on ip:9090) and containers groups and (I have a feeling this is the issue but its my first time using it) I enabled the Draft DISA STIG security profile. The machine is connected to Wifi, detected over LAN by my router but i can't ssh into or ping it , nor access the cockpit web panel. I confirmed with nmcli that the wireless interface is working and checked that the firewalld services were enabled for ssh and cockpit. Other than updating the machine I have touched nothing else so I'm lost [link] [comments] |
Should I separate my Home into it's own partition or keep it as normal? Posted: 25 Jan 2021 12:07 PM PST So in the future I'm looking to set up a new desktop, and since I've been using Linux for almost a year now, I'm planning on using that, currently my systems use the default where the home folder is in the normal partitions, but I also read up on making a seperate partition just for the home folder. Should I go with trying that? Or would it not be worth it? [link] [comments] |
