    Laptop shopping and need advice

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 12:40 PM PST

I'm shopping for a new laptop. The one I have now is an old MSI I bought from a friend for a hundred bucks. I'm looking to upgrade but I dont want to break the bank. I dont really do much gaming but I like having the option, and I dont need maxed out graphics when I do. I want to keep my budget around 500 if possible. Can anyone recommend or give advice for a decent all around laptop between 500 and 800?

HP 15s vs Dell Inspiron 15 vs HP Pavilion 14

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 11:41 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

It's time for me to buy a new laptop for general home use. I have narrowed the choice down to 3:

    HP 15s:

    • £499
    • Ryzen 5 4500U
    • 15.6" SVA LCD Screen
    • 256GB SSD

    Dell Inspiron 15 3000:

    • £499
    • Ryzen 5 3500U
    • 15.6" LED Screen
    • 256GB SSD

    HP Pavilion 14:

    • £529
    • i5 1035G1
    • 14" IPS LCD Screen
    • 512GB SSD

The most intensive work that will be done is stacking and editing large images. I also may work with large Excel files.

    Thanks

    Upgrading SSD

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 11:24 AM PST

Hello, I'm thinking of upgrading my roughly 120Gb SSD to a 1TB SSD. My laptop is a Lenovo v110. Are there any hard drive size limits or anything of that sort? And are there any other problems that I might run into?

Help with adding a graphics card to a laptop

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 11:18 AM PST

Hi I've had my laptop for a year now and use it for light gaming, I'm looking at the possibility of adding a graphics card to it and maybe a little more ram.

    https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.ebay.co.uk/p/27034974136&ved=2ahUKEwj1grKr-v3tAhW1UhUIHdNMA3kQFjAAegQIAhAB&usg=AOvVaw0lIABRiu_usojINg_QO7cU

This is the laptop I bought, it has 8gb of ram but 2gb is dedicated to the CPU so it has 6gb of ram to be used.

Would it be possible to add more ram to this computer and a graphics card, I'll be looking at a graphics card for maybe £100 so very low end.

    Thanks

Is it worth repairing my laptop?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 01:27 AM PST

Hi, I have a 2012 MacBook Pro 15". It's soo slow it makes me cry. I'm currently trying to complete an assessment and I literally need a new or updated laptop in order to complete it. It's so frustratingly slow.

My first question is, is it worth trying to fix it to make it faster?

Or should I just buy a new one?

I'm not into laptops/computers at all. I just want a laptop to complete school assessments/online shopping/general browsing of the internet. And also to backup my phone/photos etc.

    Opinions?

    Thank you

Should I keep this Asus Zenbook 14?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 10:25 AM PST

Hi all, looking for some advice.

A few weeks ago I bought the following laptop on an Amazon sale:

ASUS ZenBook UM431DA 14 Inch IPS Full HD Thin Laptop (AMD Ryzen 7 3700U, 16GB RAM, 512 GB PCI-e SSD, NumberPad, Backlit Keyboard, Windows 10)

I bought it on a whim after a few beers, for £649.99. I thought this was a good deal (£150 off) and I was in dire need of an upgrade anyway, I had my last laptop for 8 years.

The laptop itself is great, a big improvement. However something that's really bugged me is the USB C port does not support power delivery or displays. I have 2 monitors so I'm immediately 1 screen down when using this. I've read a lot of comments on laptop deals saying "Wait for 4th Gen Ryzen processors" etc, and since then I've seen a number of deals on laptops with 4th gen processors. However I'm not familiar with the Asus range so I wouldn't know if the USB C port would be similar in that it wont support displays.

Have I got a good deal here or am I a victim of my own lack of research, jumping at a deal too soon? I'm still in the return window if all else fails.

Any advice/opinions would be appreciated. Cheers!

Trusty all rounder laptop has died. Looking for recommendations to replace with similar good all-round device

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 10:22 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    U.K. , £1000-1500 ideally

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Refurbished yes, used probably not

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Form factor(1), build quality(2), performance(3), battery life(4)

My wife likes the looks of MacBooks/ Dell XPS so ideally something that looks fairly professional, ideally metal case. She hated my old gaming machine with big logos/ red flashing lights... Long battery life is not essentially as will mostly be used near power. Will need to be windows based due to work software requirements

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not really mega important, but as my wife will use it too, it can't be excessively heavy

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15inch. 13" is too small. Would consider 17" of light and portable

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I do some fairly CPU heavy work on the laptop so it would need a decent CPU, and a reasonable amount of RAM too. My wife has to use a VPN for her work and seems to not understand how our external HD works and puts literally everything on the local HD. No video or photo editing, but the ability to run some modern games would be important.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Mostly Paradox games/ creative assembly. Never really play shooters or similar. Ideal would be total war: warhammer 2 on high/ultra (at a push) settings I guess

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Not really. Other than I think what I want is basically a unicorn: a machine that is good for gaming and work, but looks sleek and professional...

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Bonus points for upgradability: I don't mind spending more on CPU now if I know i can upgrade graphics/ ram etc in a year or twos time when/ if I get some spare cash

Lenovo Yoga Duet Overall Quality/Performance vs. Microsoft Surface

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 09:50 AM PST

Hi, new here sorry if not following proper format. I'm new to the 2-in-1 market and curious how the Lenovo Yoga has been received in the community. The Yoga 7i 13" is on sale right now for $699.99 and not sure if this is too good to be true. Based on specs this seems far superior to a similarly priced Surface.

    Best laptop under 1400 dollars

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 07:06 AM PST

Hi, so I'm looking for a good laptop under that price, my requirements are: Good enough battery Good specs (at least 16gb of ram and a fast processor)

The portability is not my main concern. Of course i don't want a brick, but i don't require a lightweight laptop either.

    Thanks
