    Recommendations for wife laptop

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 01:03 PM PST

I'm terrible at using refit. I always use it wrong or something. My post get taken down because I put it in the wrong spot so I hope this is right.

My wife just got hired on part time for an attorney office to help handle all the typing of cases and all the jazz. It's like her dream part time job and she gets to do it at home. She doesn't really have a computer at home to use. I have a big gaming rig with all the bells and whistles but it's Intimidating for her to try and use. Plus she just needs something little for her self.

I know a bit about desktop PCs but nothing in regards to laptops. I'm trying to keep it very low budget. All it need to run/install is Corel WordPerfect and she has one of those Cricut vinyl cutters that there is a program for that I know she's been wanting to play with. She likes the laptops that fold back so it can be a touch screen. We went to Bestbuy and they has some Levono yogas and Surfaces under $500. So we are trying to keep it under $500. She also likes some of the Chrombooks they had but again I don't know much about this laptop/chrome book world but I know they are two different things. Chromebook being more web based programs but can WordPerfect be install on such a thing? As far as components in it, it doesn't matter to me as long as it runs those 2 programs.

Any recommendations or in-site would be amazing. Thanks for all that read this.

Should I trade-in my 2019 MacBook Pro for a baseline MacBook Air?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 09:47 AM PST

    Hello!

I have a 13 inch MacBook Pro 2019 (2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel i5 with 8GB LPDDR3 RAM and Intel Iris Plus Graphics, 512 SSD). I am a student and I use Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, Photoshop and Lightroom in addition to the regular student stuff.

After watching a lot of reviews on the new M1 MacBook Air, I've been thinking of trading this one in and getting the Air for next to nothing (99 bucks). I feel like that might get me better performance and maybe I should trade my Intel Mac in while it still gives me a decent trade-in amount.

    Should I do this?

PS. My current Mac is largely fine, lot of fan noise and not great battery life, but other than that it handles everything like a champ (minus the occasional Premiere Pro crash)

Dell Latitude 5480 DC Power Jack Question

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 12:14 PM PST

Dell Latitude 5480 DC Power Jack Question

I'm repurposing an out-of-warranty enterprise Dell Latitude 5480 for a friend. It was missing the SSD, RAM, and power brick after being decommissioned by its previous owner. While gathering parts I encountered a DC power jack I've never seen before. I ordered the part number listed with the service tag which was a 65W slim AC adapter. Of course, it did not fit correctly in the DC power jack without some serious pin bending. I decided to head to eBay and purchase a new DC power jack (not a different AC adapter) hoping it would be the one I was looking for. Lo and behold, it was. The new DC power jack and AC adapter worked perfectly together and all the wiring to the motherboard was identical. In fact, everything about the new jack was identical except the connection.

In order to avoid issues in the future, can anyone tell me the difference between the top photo (the one that came with the laptop) and the bottom photo (the new one that fits perfectly but has a different input)? I've been unable to locate an AC adapter that would fit that weird pin configuration unless it's one of those AC adapters with the plastic tips, which I've never worked with.

The positive outcome here is a new power jack was only $6 plus shipping and it arrived very quickly. Zero issues.

P.S. The old jack has a part number on it that is 1 character different than the one I ordered. The old one is DC30100ZQ00 and the new one is DC30100ZD00. I have no doubt the Q and D separate them, but I can't find any information about the Q except a few part numbers on AliExpress. The odd thing is every site that sells a DC power jack for my model only sells the D.

Looking for a gaming laptop, quite inexperienced in computers in general

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 12:05 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Really just as cheap as possible

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

    Performance

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Just enough to be mobile

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming, Mostly strategy games like HOI4 and Civilization. Also make maps from time to time

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Mostly strategy, I dont need FPS or Resolution above 60 and 720, I just need it to be able to stay at those settings with alot going on.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I tend to drop things alot, so I'd want it to be sturdy.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Alot of this is give or take, I dont have a specific budget because I want to find a specific laptop to save for.

    Laptop buying help(1500 USD)

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 12:04 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      1500 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I don't know much about form factors but it would be a gaming laptop, I'm fine with a plastic chassis as long as it's somewhat durable, performance needs to be high(for the price), and it needs at least 5 hours of battery life, at least for web browsing or the like.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not at all

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

At least 15.6 but I'm ok with larger

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I would be video editing on Adobe Premiere/Filmora, photo editing on either PhotoShop or a cheaper software, and as for gaming I would mainly be playing AAA games, mainly older games like Skyrim, but I would like to be able to play the newer games as well.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

AC Odyssey, Skyrim, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, witcher 3, GTAV, and occasionally R6 Siege and maybe CSGO. I hope for high settings on most AAA games and ultra for the FPS games, for the AAA games I ok with anything above 30fps for the harder to run games and over 60fps for easier titles, as for the FPS games the max fps the screen allows.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Having a webcam is wanted but not a deal breaker.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am in a weird predicament, I have 1500USD to spend on a laptop and only a laptop, meaning I don't care if I could get a better deal but the specs are a little worse as I couldn't actually use the money that I save. I want a better GPU than a 1660ti, and I would prefer Ryzen over Intel. I would also be doing game development on mainly Unity. Thank you.

Going crazy trying to find a new laptop for my wife with a touchscreen and a disc drive (or at least that isn't a Chromebook so we can use an external disc drive/burner), any help would be appreciated (details within)

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 12:01 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$450 at most, preferably less (USA)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, albeit at substantially less than this amount given the chance it won't last
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
From most to least important: Build quality, performance, battery life, form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Not very.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Larger is better in general, but this is negotiable
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Super basic stuff. Spreadsheets, text documents, playing music and short videos.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
N/A, only games on here would be on Starfall.com
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Touchscreen and optical drive are both the big things here. As stated in the title, the drive is not a must, but it needs to at least be compatible with an external drive (so no Chromebooks, which is what makes this tougher). Touch is pretty non-negotiable.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
My finishing thought is that this move away from physical media really sucks. Publish post.

    Any reputable manufacturers of M.2 2242 and/or 2260 SSDs?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 12:00 PM PST

My x64 tablet (a Dell Venue 11 Pro 7140) takes M.2 2260 SSDs, and the largest official offering is 256GB. That is not enough for me.

Does any reputable (Samsung, SanDisk, Crucial, etc.) manufacturer sell in the USA, SSDs in M.2 2242 or 2260 sizes? Or are my only options Chinese off-brands?

EDIT: I forgot to add, the SSD needs to be SATA, not NVMe

Looking for a new laptop for basic use, under $500. Is Lenovo Ideapad 3 Touch worth it?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 08:10 AM PST

My Asus finally gave up on me after 7 years. Looking for a budget laptop, used occasionally (less than weekly) for paying bills, Microsoft Office, light browsing. I thought about buying one of the cheap $200 laptops, but don't want to need to buy a new one again in a year.

Is this Lenovo decent? It's $449 on sale.

    Lenovo - IdeaPad 3 15" Touch Screen Laptop - Intel Core i5-1035G1 - 12GB Memory - 256GB SSD

If not, is there something better to fit my needs?

Help me choose between a laptop and an iPad

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 11:23 AM PST

So with CES 2021 around the corner and with Ryzen 5000 mobile and RTX 3000 mobile going to be announced, I was wondering for my secondary device whether I want a gaming laptop (because I travel a lot) or an iPad with a keyboard case (Air 4 246GB+ Folio touch) and just stream games using Game Pass. Since my b'day is coming soon (Feb 11 yay), I wondered because I have a laptop and an iPad but they're both too weak for gaming and are capable for casual tasks only which I barely do and just use my desktop for it. I am looking to do more on the laptop/iPad since they'll be more powerful.

So tl;dr Help me choose between a gaming laptop or an iPad (Air 4 256GB+Folio touch)

Suggestions for a college student looking to learn VBA and other coding languages

    Posted: 03 Jan 2021 11:21 AM PST

Hi Reddit, I'm a university student and I am looking to buy a laptop that I can use to learn some VBA and other languages (such as Python,R etc.), as well as doing some data analytics work.

Some of my course-mates use MacBooks and others use Windows but everyone seems to cope fine with the workload on either system. What laptop would you guys suggest I buy with a budget of around £1500($2000) as I want something that will last a long time and perform any coding work with ease.

Any suggestions will be helpful. Thanks in advance.
