What laptop should I buy for both gaming and working?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 10:11 AM PST

Hello, i was wondering if you guys can recommend me some laptops that I should buy for gaming and doing work. I don't need a very strong gaming laptop, as long as it can run minecraft or maybe sims 4 if possible.

Repasting Laptops: Is it worth it?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 12:36 PM PST

So if you own a gaming laptop, and are experiencing temperature issues, you might be considering repasting your laptop. Here's my experience with it.

I have an Acer Nitro 5 AN515-43 (3550H + RX 560X, upgraded ram to 16GB). I have a beefy PC rig but needed something portable and kinda cheap for college so went with this. I mainly used it for studying but I had to use it as my main gaming machine last month when my PC's graphics card broke down and I was in the process of getting a new one.

So this is is when I found out how hot this guy got. For context, this was the first time I exclusively gamed on it in 6-7 months. In the beginning, it was alright but within a week, I saw temperatures rise up to 90 or more when running less intensive games like Counterstrike and Rocket League.

Don't even ask me what running actually heavy games on it was like. The throttling was unbelievable. I went from 55fps on GTA to 5 for a few seconds.

I had my main PC up and running by the next week but still decided to see what was going on with the laptop. Tried undervolting, didn't help. Tried using a cooling pad, didn't help. Finally decided to open it up and check the internals. I was going to clean it so I decided to repaste it as well because I had some Kryonaut at hand that was going to be left unused for quite a bit. Here's the before and after:

Before: No Cooling Pad, stock paste, no undervolt:

CSGO: 90-95°C - throttling like crazy after a few rounds

GTA 5: 93-97°C - cannot play without stutters. A long session causes a crash.

    Chrome (5 tabs): 60-64°C - that's abnormally high]

    Idle: 56-60°C

After: Kryonaut Repaste, no Undervolt, no Cooling Pad:

CSGO: 70-81°C - average FPS also up.

GTA 5: 78-88°C - no change in peak FPS but no throttles now

Chrome (5 tabs): 45-50°C - much more reasonable

    Idle: 48-50°C

Afterer: Kryonaut Repaste, Undervolt, Cooling Pad:

CSGO: 68-79°C - no change in peak FPS

    GTA 5: 76-84°C - 4-5 more frames

    Chrome (5 tabs): 43-47°C

    Idle: 40-45°C

The lower value is the average temps while the latter is the peak temps. The 5 tabs I used for chrome were Reddit, Twitch, Pexels, Github, and LinkedIn.

Idk why Acer is trying to save a few cents out of thermal paste because it honestly sucks. Nonetheless, at least it's a fixable issue and not THAT costly all things considered.

PS: My laptop was relatively clean because it wasn't used heavily and was well taken care of. You can get a performance boost just by shooting your airflow vents with some compressed air. Though I highly suggest you take your laptop apart and clean it till it's shiny. Hope ya'll liked the post :D

Welp. According to Open Hardware Monitor, my CPU got to 110° yesterday (while I was playing Witcher 3), but I didn't see any performance drops during that time. Should I be worried?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 02:28 PM PST

I mean, if my CPU really reached that temp, my entire laptop should've shut down, or at least show some signs of thermal throttling. But none of that happened (or at least I didn't recognize it; when I died, loading my previous save seemed to take an eternity, and when I tried to leave the game it froze entirely oops. but I think that was rather a game bug, since my checkpoints weren't working for some reason. idk how thermal throttling manifests itself though)

I have a Legion 5 with a Ryzen 7. The CPU usually is around 80-90° while gaming, and sometimes spikes for a short time above 100°, but I've never noticed performance issues do to it. How worried should I be?

I'm constantly afraid I might nuke my CPU lmao. Please enlighten me

What a laptop keyboard is that?

    Hi,

I want to replace a keyboard in my laptop but first time I see something like that. It looks like the keyboard is extra thin very flexible and is self-adhesive!

I would like to find a keyboard replacement, it can be the same keyboard model or a different suitable keyboard model. But i cannot find anything what will fit.

Laptop model: Tongfang PF5NU1G / SCHENKER VIA 15 Pro / Mechrevo Code 0

    https://laptopwithlinux.com/product/tongfang-pf5nu1g-amd-linux-laptop

    Keyboard has backlit.

    Dimensions: 297mm x 104mm

    High is around 9mm

Site where you can select a (older) laptop by specs like Firewire or SD-card reader

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 01:01 PM PST

Is there a site where you can select an older laptop by checking the boxes of everything you want?
I want to buy a secondhand work horse for (almost) every situation. So for example with Firewire, DVD, maybe floppy, SD-card reader, both VGA and HDMI, Ethernet, choose between seperate mic and headphones, or a combined 3.5 mm jack, maybe PC card/PCMCIA slot(because you never know...)
Something like a Dell Latitude E6430 (except that has no Firewire or floppy)
Anyway, I just want to click the checkboxes and see what results I get.

Is it a good time to buy a gaming laptop or should I wait?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 05:22 AM PST

I ordered a hp pavilion laptop with a 1650 ti 144hz on Amazon. But I've been seeing a lot of posts online saying that rtx 3000 laptops are going to be released this year.

I live in India and the prices for GPUs is generally double/triple what it is in countries like the US/UK

Do you think its actually worth waiting for one in India? Or do you think the price and supply would be too much of a hassle?

I just got this laptop from family member. I didn't turn it on yet because I feel like square around that adapter. I see it was handled badly, missing screws, pins from phone connector, broken off battery lock, adapter. It should be fully working. I am happy as it was free. Now I'll check it further

    disk space issues

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 12:19 PM PST

So my laptop which I use for just about everything (lenovo ideapad 130S-11IGM) is lying to me regarding how much of the disk space is occupied by what. In the settings app under storage, it says that 49 gb of the 58 gb is occupied by "apps and features." But upon opening the tab, sorting the displayed apps by size, and adding up the sizes, the displayed apps take up less than 1 gb total. I am posting to ask "What is taking up 48 gb of my disk space that Windows won't tell me about?" Because it is impeding on my laptop's performance and i am unaware of any measures i can take to fix this.

(I understand if this doesn't quit pertain to this subreddit, and I will take it elsewhere if it gets removed.)

I spilled water on my Lenovo Legion Y520 Laptop Keyboard

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 12:08 PM PST

Just a little over an hour ago I spilled water on my Lenovo Legion Y520 keyboard. I immediately unplugged it and wiped off the water I could see on the keyboard. I never powered it down right away (which I should have) and it was about 3 minutes before I actually powered it down. During this time everything seemed to work fine. After powering it down, I put a piece of paper towel between the keyboard and screen and closed the lid. Currently its sitting upside down with the lid closed with the papertowel in the lid and everyhing is wrapped in a towel.

What should I do now? I don't have money to buy a new laptop.

    What laptop should I get?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 11:48 AM PST

I currently have the new HP Spectre-15 and I have had a couple problems with it. It has an extended warranty and I'm wondering if I decide to return it what I should get instead. I mostly use it for school, working (video/photo editing), streaming and gaming. My budget is about $2,000 and I'm looking for it to be pretty slim for carrying around to different classes.

    best affordable laptop for student

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 11:04 AM PST

i'm in high school and i do all of my work online but recently my HP laptop broke, had it for around 6 years but the fans were busted and eventually it just shut down.

i'm looking to buy a new laptop but i don't want to pay over 400 for it, kinda cheap but (a student, not rich) i'm wondering what the best computer that id have to spend a few hours on for schoolwork would be. i like HP and i had a HP Notebook - 15-ba052wm (Touch) (ENERGY STAR) and i really liked it besides the fan issues. it was touchscreen had 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA on the hard drive 8 GB DDR4-2133 SDRAM (2 x 4 GB) on the memory.

basically i'm wondering if there's anything kinda similar to this for a cheaper price range? i'm sorry if i'm not specific enough i just don't know anything about laptops.

Apple MacBook Pro (M1 2020) or 11th Generation Intel Core i7 Dell XPS 13

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 12:12 AM PST

    Hello,

I am writing this post to seek some insight in deciding between the Apple MacBook Pro (M1 2020) or the Dell XPS 13. I just purchased the M1 MacBook today, so I haven't yet been able to fully test its battery life, which for me is a deciding factor; more importantly I need a computer that is dependable and reliable in the long run, as it will be my life blood- no one can live without a computer in this day and age.

However, my only reservation with Apple Macintosh is its limited functionality in Microsoft Excel- from my understanding, Microsoft Excel just works better on P.C. than on Mac, as it has a wider array of shortcuts to help with productivity and workflow.

Would you suggest that I keep the Apple Macintosh M1 or exchange it for the Dell XPS 13, which I fear may conk out after only 2 years.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    weird keyboard/backlight issue

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 09:51 AM PST

    Hi,

My Eluktronics Max-17 has been having strange problems with its keyboard and the lighting on it. If I press on the bottom left next to the trackpad, the left zone lighting turns on, and that problem has been persisting for months. Now, after packing it in my backpack for a flight, the left and right control, Windows key, FN key, bottom and left arrow keys, and 1, 2, and 3 on my take a TON of force to register a keystroke. Is this physical damage? Never heard of anything like this.
