I'm looking for a $650 - $750 laptop for schoolwork & light gaming. Posted: 25 Jan 2021 08:46 PM PST So I recently found a great deal on a Lenovo Legion 5 laptop here at costco, (at the time of writing it's going for $680), and I was almost going to pull the trigger when I decided to dig deeper. This led to me discovering that posts like this one and this one that are full of people begging laptop buyers not to get this panel, due to its dimness/lack of color quality. My question is, is it really that bad? The rest of the laptop's specs seem great, but is the screen a dealbreaker? I'm coming from an awful Dell Latitude 3150 (so it's not like I'm used to some incredible creator-tier display). Oh, and another thing about the Legion 5: I saw a post where someone upgraded the screen for about $100. Would that be worth it? All of that to say: if it really is a dealbreaker, what are some laptops that you would suggest I buy instead? I've heard that the Dell G5 is pretty good, although I have also heard that it thermal throttles a bit. Would that be a dealbreaker for that laptop? TL;DR I need a laptop for the reasons listed in the title, and I found this one. Is it any good, and if not, what is? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Jan 2021 03:34 AM PST Hi, I am on the hunt for an upgrade to my old, 2015, Acer Swift 3, been researching and looking everywhere for something to fit my needs to be be my next day to day laptop for the next 3-5 years. Budget is flexible, but would rather it be under 1k. If I had to prioritise what I need:
Any advice appreciate! I've come close to the Huawei Matebook x Pro, Dell XPS 13, but I've been led to believe that anything ultrabook sized will suffer in the heat department.. Unless any actual owners can tell me otherwise. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Good laptop for programming. Budget <450 usd Posted: 26 Jan 2021 03:57 AM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: budget: <450 usd country of purchase: United States Are you open to refurbs/used? -Yes How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? - Need a laptop that can handle any integrated development environment(IDE). Also need a good battery life for it. How important is weight and thinness to you? -Not important Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -Something better than 14 inches. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -I don't play games on my computer so I'm not really focused on that part. I mainly use Visual Studio, Visual studio code, android studio, and JetBrains. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -Good keyboard as I type a lot, a finger print reader for security would be nice(not necessary), a backlit keyboard would also be nice(also not necessary. My main focus is being able to run compilers with ease and having 0 issues). Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -I need to be able to run IDEs and have 0 issues. I will be using them for pretty much the entire day. Also, multitasking with no issues is a must. Whenever I use JavaScript, I also use a live server, so handling both of these at the same time without any issues is a big deal for me. Thanks for taking the time to read my post! Posted: 26 Jan 2021 03:16 AM PST Hi everyone, IT M.S. student here which needs to buy a new laptop and can wait maximum 20 days if something interesting comes up but has some restraint on where to buy it. 1) Matebook 14 4600h 16/512 -> 899 € 2) UX425EA 1165g7 16/512 300nits -> 1099 € 3) UM425IA 4700u 16/512 400nits, QUERTZ keyboard (ffs) -> 985 € 4) Thinkbook 13s 1135g7 16/512 300nits -> 1025 € Now I have a skylake zenbook with a shitty 220 nits TN panel so from that point of view everything is an upgrade. I'd also like to know if the price differnce between those laptops are worth it or not. If you have any other option to suggest I'd like you to argument also why I should chose it. (max price 1100 €) Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Help picking out an entry level-mid gaming laptop Posted: 26 Jan 2021 01:34 AM PST Im trying to find a decent gaming pc that can run games like Minecraft, Valorant, Fortnite/Apex Legends, and anything around that type of range. Im not a "need 60fps at ultra settings" person so a low or medium resolution is fine with me, id hope to stay around $500 but $700-$800 is probably where i'd draw the line. Any suggestions? Laptop for uni student (video editing, gaming, eng software capable?) Posted: 26 Jan 2021 01:32 AM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: -500-1500AUD Are you open to refurbs/used? -Maybe. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? -Performance and battery life are the highest priority then build quality and a touchscreen. How important is weight and thinness to you? -Not overly important, willing to sacrifice some for performance. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. -Preferably 15.6in but 13.3 or 14 works too. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. -I game and use photoshop and premiere pro quite frequently but I do have a high performance desktop which I can use for that. Some portable editing would be nice though. I'm not sure how necessary it is in the civil engineering industry to run programs like CAD from your laptop so I may require it do so. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? -I would play all games from my desktop but may want to play something like League of Legends at whatever settings portably occasionally. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? -n/a Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. -In general I'm looking for a laptop for uni work, web browsing and watching videos. If I could get a reliable and affordable laptop that can run engineering software, do some light gaming and do video/photo editing then I'd be willing to spend the money but I don't want it to come at the cost of overheating and battery life as it has in the past with my MSI ge62 7rf lol. I'm stuck between Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 and Legion 5 Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:51 AM PST The ones I'm looking at both have AMD Ryzen 5 4600H Processor, 16 GB RAM and 512 GB SSD with upgradeable slots. I'd mostly use it for light gaming and rarely for AAA games. Besides playing simple games like Civilization, I'd mostly use it for Adobe Photoshop and Indesign. Photoshop is mostly for editing and not for color correcting or similar tasks. I'd think both of these would meet my needs I can't really tell what would be different about them. Also I'd like to see if you any other models in mind for a similar price range. Thank you very much. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 25 Jan 2021 08:01 AM PST Hello! I'm a freshman in college starting this March(because Korea), and I was looking for a laptop for gaming / computer science studying! I have a budget of ~1300 USD( ~ 1,500,000 Korean won) to spend on this laptop, and I intend to play some titles like Doom eternal and Red dead redemption 2. I'm going to carry it around campus so I want a one that's not that heavy(not serious gaming laptop grade heavy) and that has a good battery life. Any suggestions are welcome! Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 1,000,000 - 1,500,000 Korean won(about 1300$ USD max) Are you open to refurbs/used? Nope How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? A 2-in-1 would be nice, but it isn't necessary.(gaming/performance is more important) I want a laptop with good battery life - that can survive a day of notetaking and stuff. How important is weight and thinness to you? Quite. I want to be able to carry it around campus without being exhausted. Lighter/thinner than serious gaming laptops. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Anything less than 15 inches would be great! Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I want to be able to play Doom eternal and Red dead redemption 2. Also the Bioshock collection and older titles like that. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Doom eternal : highish settings, above 60-70 fps Red dead redemption 2 : medium settings or higher , 60 fps Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? It needs a webcam : for online classes and stuff. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I want to be able to use it for at least 4-5 years. Also, I can buy from Amazon so any Amazon links would also be great! Thanks for the help :) [link] [comments] |

15.6"+ for smooth, reliable video editing... and CS:GO, probably. Posted: 26 Jan 2021 12:41 AM PST I need something that moves as fast as I can when I'm really blazing through an edit, or won't skip any frames during playback or miss an input when I'm dialing in a cut to a single frame. A dGPU is nice, and I've seen machines at good prices with up to a 1660ti, but really a MX250 or MX350 would probably do the job too. I would think I can find something like this in the ~$750 range that's New, Refurb or Used. Even for parts! I can do my own laptop repairs, from shorting pins to replacing mobos and screens. It'd be nice if it's all done up already, but I expect I'll at least need to upgrade storage or something later. I guess a lot of other people feel this way as I haven't seen many good deals on parts machines on eBay. My favorite laptops ever were the ThinkPad x220 for the keyboard, and T480 for having good features and smooth performance (from what I remember) on the i5 4c/8t model that had a slight undervolt. Both had shit screens though. Here's what I'd hope for in an editing laptop:
As many of these criteria met would be great. I would honestly buy any of the first 3 laptops from the laptopdeals subreddit sticky list for editing machines if it wasn't for the fact they were all 14". I'd just rather not stare at a screen that small for any great length of time. Thanks guys [link] [comments] |
LG Gram 17" (11th gen Intel i7-1165G7) vs Asus Strix G17 (Ryzen 9 5900HX) for reliability Posted: 25 Jan 2021 06:34 PM PST I'm completely torn between these two models. I know that they are completely different classes of laptops (one is on the extreme end of portability/battery life, the other is on the extreme end of power). Both have new generations of their respective CPU manufacturers. My use for them would be everyday productivity (coding in excel, matlab, R, Zoom, discord, engineering simulation software such as COMSOL/Pro II [although I believe this will mostly be via remote desktop, where the actual programs are being run on a different computer]. If I purchase the G17, I would also use it for gaming, but if I purchase the Gram I'd just stick to console gaming. I understand the new Ryzen 5000 series is supposed to destroy intel at performance (particular with multi-core performance), and this is probably the main reason I'm considering this model. I've also always wanted a gaming PC so I could start using my computer for gaming instead of console. Realistically though, this isn't the biggest priority, but a really cool option. On the other hand, the LG Gram would destroy the Strix G17 with portability (nice due to the fact that I have to carry my laptop through some fairly hilly terrain regularly, but I'm a bigger guy who can carry a decent load). Also, the battery life (claims up to 19.5 hrs, but even 9-10 hours with normal daily use is good) would be incredible so I could charge my laptop over night and take it anywhere without having to back a bulky charger and never having to be tethered to an outlet. These features of each laptop balance each other out pretty well in my opinion, so basically the deciding factor that i need help with is this: Which is more reliable? Which laptop is least likely to have time-wasting issues within the next year? I'm absolutely done with my current laptop that has made me late to Zoom meetings due to technical issues, slow booting, slow initial opening of apps like chrome/zoom etc. Does anyone have any experience with either to share? I know neither of these laptops has been mass-distributed yet, so I'm asking mostly about previous generations of these models. Both are within my budget, so money is not a factor. Neither is release date/availability for my purposes. I've searched reviews on various sites including reddit, youtube, and PC rating sites, and couldn't zero in on a conclusion, so if you can contribute your experience with a previous LG Gram 17" or Strix G17 model, I would greatly appreciate it!Here are the specs of the two specific models (at least the main ones): LG Gram CPU: 11th gen Intel i7-1165G7 (4-core) GPU: (integrated) Screen size/resolution: 17", 2560 x 1600 Storage: 2 TB SSD NVMe Memory: 16 GB DDR4 Weight: 2.98 lbs Asus Strix G17 CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (8 GB GDDR6)Screen size/resolution: 17", 1920 x 1080 Storage: 1 TB SSD PCIe SSD Memory: 16 GB DDR4Weight: 5.95 lbs Thanks [link] [comments] |
LAPTOP SUGGESTIONS FOR UNIVERSITY Posted: 25 Jan 2021 08:38 PM PST I am about to start university and need a a laptop, as I'm doing mostly online courses. I will need a laptop that is fast, capable of watching lectures and recorded videos, generous amount of storage and for typing lengthy essays. My current laptop is a LENOVO YOGA 310. It's specs are as follows: Memory: 4gb 1600MHz Processor: Intel® Celeron® N3340 Processor (2M Cache, 1.1 GHz, 1.6 GHz max) Intel Pentium® N4200 Processor (2M Cache, 1.1 GHz, 2.5 GHz max. The Lenovo yoga I currently have is terrible. I struggle to save anything on this laptop, even though I have little to nothing on this device. I can't even update the laptop or window settings due to the little storage on it and it won't even let me shut down the laptop anymore. I sometimes can't open Google due to not enough storage. It is so slow, glitches and crashes when I have multiple tabs and word doc open for assignments. Please any recommendations within the $1500 (aud) would be muchly appreciated. Thank you. [US] Non-gaming laptop for light music production and video editing- 1250 budget Posted: 25 Jan 2021 07:20 PM PST Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1250 or so Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance, build quality, battery life in that order. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not very Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. N/A Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Minor video editing, starting to get in to ableton but could learn logic as well. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I do like a touch screen but that is not at all a deal breaker (coming from a spectre 360x, I need a good build quality, and since most of what my laptop would be for is media consumption, a good screen is ideal. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Leaning towards the MacBook Air, but I don't have an iPhone and have never used Mac so not sure how big of a learning curve that would be. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 25 Jan 2021 05:00 PM PST Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $700 USD Are you open to refurbs/used? Yes with a functional motherboard, battery, storage, display and trackpad, and come with charger included. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? I prefer a thicker laptop that is still fairly portable with removable battery and performance enough to run a couple of VMs. I also prefer the ability to repair my own laptop and upgrade the core components (CPUs, RAM, SATA/M.2/mSATA, CD ROM). How important is weight and thinness to you? Weigh enough to just carry around in a bag but thinness is not important at all Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. I would prefer somewhere in the 13"-15" max Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I want to run a ton of virtual machines with some dedicated for intensive testing, gaming to low powered tasks like browsing the net. I would also like to install a gaming VM so I might need to take advantage of Thunderbolt, ExpressCard slot or any other connections that'll allow me to run a graphic card. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I am planning to mostly play low to mid tier performance games such as GTA 5, Minecraft, smaller indie games, etc. I plan on playing on medium at 1080p on a virtual machine Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I want it to have business class durability, have at least 16GB minimum with chance to upgrade, a secondary or tritectery slots for storages choices, and a removeable battery. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I was wondering whether it is able to be dockable or has a docking station and whether it can drive 3 displays at 1080p at once. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 25 Jan 2021 05:18 PM PST Hello! I am in the market for a new labtop. The brand I am going with is ASUS. I am undecided between the 15.6" and 17.3". The 15.6" has an Intel Core I3 1005G1 with a fingerprint scanner and keyboard is backlit. The 17.3" has a Ryzen 3 3250U with hardly no additional features, regardless of the nano edge screen. I understand both does something better than the other. However, personal usage of the labtop will be for work and a little bit of play. Mainly, DOTA, LOL and anime binging. I understand for better play and fast loading, go with Ryzen, however Intel has better rendering and low latency. Can anyone help me, I appreciate your comments and feedback [link] [comments] |

$1200 USD max, prefer to stay under $1000
No
Need to be able to carry back and forth to school, 2-in-1 would be a plus as it would be easier to annotate screen, battery life - would be nice to get at least 3 hours battery life, performance is most important.
I think most choices will conform to what I need, lightweight is nice, but don't want to feel like it is going to break
14", possibly 13.3
Light CAD using TurboCAD, some video and photo editing, use a couple design softwares
N/A
Must have headphone jack, touchscreen preferred
Teacher using MS Teams, need to be able to share screen, annotate using USB drawing pad or touchscreen, and access other apps at the same time. Have lost 2 laptops with bad hard drives this past month. Do not want Lenovo! Windows person, but would consider Mac if affordable and reliable. Currently, 1 laptop went out and the other keeps requiring a complete reset every few days. When using with Teams, will completely freezes up and I have to use my phone. Currently looking at this one as well as a couple on Newegg.com. Has an i5. I have been looking at i7 and AMD 7. Would like at least 16GB ram. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B082FZ4K6G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_LT5dGbFCZV8D9?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 Open to suggestions, Thanks! [link] [comments] |

$1500-3500 USD
