What router would you like your ISP to give you? Posted: 23 Jan 2021 04:50 AM PST Greetings! So I am running a small ISP which is on a fibre only network, with packages from 20 -> 1000Mbps symmetrical. I am just curious to know what you guys think should be a good, stock standard router offered to clients. We were originally going to use Ubiquiti Aircubes as our stock, but have seen there are plenty of decent alternatives like the Huawei AX3 and the Tenda W-AC8. What router would you like your ISP to give you, that wouldn't break the bank? Edit: Thanks for all the responses! Quite some insightful information, but when people say "something easy to understand and hard to break" could you please post some examples. Extra: Yes, we offer the "bring your own router" option, but we also want to offer to buy ones from us at a discounted rate. Our consideration list so far:

Sharing a drive on the network is never easy for me! Posted: 23 Jan 2021 04:52 PM PST I have an old Windows 8 machine at home, and I'm trying to share all its hard drives (5) with the other computers on my network; all Windows 10. For each drive, I went to Properties > Sharing > Advanced Sharing, and checked Share this Folder, and gave it a share name. Checked permissions and it says Everyone had Read access so I left that as it was. I also verified that under Advanced Sharing Settings, Network discovery was on, file and print sharing was on, and I turned off password protected sharing. I can now see the Windows 8 machine and it's shared drives, but when I click on them, I get a "Windows cannot access \PCNAME\C. You do not have permissions to access \PCNAME\C. Contact your network administrator to request access." Any ideas? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
5 Port Ethernet switch brings down home internet Posted: 23 Jan 2021 06:49 PM PST I am a bit of newbie with home networking but usually with some troubleshooting I can solve most of my internet problems however this one has me stumped. I bought a cheap 5 port Gigabit ethernet switch off Monoprice and every time I try to plug it in with all my devices attached it will take down the internet at the router (amber internet light). Once I unplug the switch and reset the router the internet will come back online. The thing that has me scratching my head is it's not consistent. I can work all day with my laptop plugged into the switch but as soon as I try to use my Xbox or TV it will take everything down. I have tried swapping the cables around and trying one device at a time to try and narrow it down, but there seems to be no rhyme or reason. I can get one single device connected, sometimes two, but eventually some combination will crash the internet requiring a reset again. I have done extensive Googling and nothing I see seems to be this exact problem. My best guesses are either a loop somewhere in the network that I cannot see or just my router being overloaded but I didn't think that was possible from hard wired internet? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Additional Information

My speed test results are high but I still have 100+ ping in video games Posted: 23 Jan 2021 03:02 PM PST I don't get why that is. Here are my results: https://www.speedtest.net/result/10802687760 I have a panoramic router from cox. Let me know if you need any other info [link] [comments] |
Ping spikes when playing games on ethernet connection Posted: 23 Jan 2021 05:08 PM PST I have verizon gigabit in Northern VA. Recently, i've been experiencing ping spikes that last anywhere from a second to a minute. I can't play online games because of this. I followed another thread that told me to use ping 192.168.1.1 -t in command prompt. When the ping spikes happen, this is what the feed looks like. https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/735977419630051400/802705755261501480/unknown.png So it would seem there's a problem in my home network. The way the network is set up in my home is that theres the internet that comes from the outside which goes into a Trendnet ethernet router that provides ethernet connection all over the house. My pc gets and ethernet connection from there. The wifi router which verizon provided also gets an ethernet connection from there. [link] [comments] |
Help me set up a Router with 2 APs Posted: 23 Jan 2021 02:41 PM PST Could you guys check if this setup is okay? https://images2.imgbox.com/82/aa/8KrzVatU_o.jpg Router: D-Link DI-604, IP: 192.168.1.1, DHCP: ON (Range: 192.168.1.100 ~ 192.168.199) AP1: TP Link WR841N, IP: 192.168.1.2, DHCP: OFF AP2: Netgear R6220, IP: 192.168.1.3, DHCP: OFF The small black devices are DECA adapters to utilize coax cables. (because I can't install ethernet cables throughout the house) The router has no Wifi function. The both AP's give out Wifi signals. 3 Devices (2PCs, PS3) are wired to AP1 to get stable internet. I feel like sometimes the router is not assigning IP addresses to some devices trying to connect. Because a few times one iPad sees the signal and tries to connect, but cannot finish connecting. (Clock keeps turning) Also, a few times my PS3 (wired to AP2) says it cannot get IP. Thank you for your help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Jan 2021 02:07 PM PST Hello all, I'd like to start hardwiring my home. So far the plan is 8 wall ports (4 duplexes) per bedroom, one on each wall, and run the cables to the living room where the modem and router are wired. I have 48-port switch arriving Monday (I got a larger one to accommodate the TV, printer, and Xbox in the LR). First of all, how would I plan for the wires to exit the wall at the switch? I imagine it's not advisable to have cat6 just hanging out of the drywall. I was thinking either something like this or this. Second, would it be best to put the switch there, where the modem and router are? For added fun, I don't have a basement, just a crawlspace, so running the cables will be enough for me. Thank you! Need Help: ASUS RT-AX86U port forwarding Posted: 23 Jan 2021 08:03 PM PST To cut to the chase I have had port forwarding setup on my ASUS router since the day I purchased it... today I went to add 2 more port forwarding rules to go with my already existing rule for my plex server... once I added my new rule and rebooted the router my internet would not connect... after many hours of tinkering and trying to figure out what was happening I factory reset my router and went through the process of setting everything back up... once I got to adding the port forwarding rules back to the router I turned on the toggle switch it said it was on, but when looking at the system log I could see there was an error applying rules... so I restarted the router and it went back into the broken state it was before... I also have downgraded the routers Firmware as a result hoping that would solve the issue... I have done a ton of research online and found people saying the storage gets to full and that it needs to be cleared but the instructions are not the same for my model... so I am not sure what exactly to do here... Thank you in advance anyone who reaches out [link] [comments] |
What kind of risks does enabling DMZ pose? Posted: 23 Jan 2021 08:02 PM PST I recently upgraded my router to TP-Link Archer A6 and have configured port forwarding and enabling UPnP for some games, however the game still says that the NAT type is moderate, the only way to fix this is by enabling DMZ host for my PC, which I know is risky. So should I consider replacing my router or is it safe to enable DMZ host for my PC? I've concluded that the issue is with the router as connecting my ISP's Ethernet cable directly to my PC gives me an open NAT. [link] [comments] |
Asus AC86U DFS channels missing - Canada? Posted: 23 Jan 2021 07:37 PM PST Picked up an AC86U this afternoon from Staples and came to my surprise that no DFS channels are listed in the Wireless/Control Channel setting. I was told this router has access to DFS channels in my region but I couldn't find any? Firmware has been updated. Need some help here. [link] [comments] |
Is my modem the cause of my bufferbloat? Perhaps something else? Posted: 23 Jan 2021 07:26 PM PST Hey, I'm currently using an ARRIS Surfboard TG3452 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Voice Gateway Modem Router with 802.11ac Wi-Fi & MoCA 2.0 for my internet. I've been using http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest to test out my internet because currently I'm using a Netgear Nighthawk R7000 with the modem router mentioned above (modem is provisioned just for phone calls and for modem capabilities - no router) with Mediacom 1g internet. I use the internet for tons of video games, and the main one that is causing me grief is Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and I believe bufferbloat is causing issues for me. My router setup is located in my basement and my gaming setup is located two floors away on the second floor. The dsl report speedtest frequently gives me an "F" rating with the download and upload speeds at roughly 600 mbsp down and 30 mbsp up, "A" rating for those. My first thought was because my setup was simply too far away. I invested in an Orbi Ax6000 setup and put the Orbi router next to the modem and the Satellite next to my gaming consoles. From the Satellite, I went completely wired - my computer as well. Upon attempting the dsl test again, I noticed that it was slightly better, giving C's to A ratings with the occasional F rating, because the bufferbloat numbers would skyrocket occasionally, lowering my score. I went back to my Nighthawk - at least temporarily because when I looked into it some more, I discovered that I could not limit the bandwidth on the Orbi router, which someone told me could be a reason for bufferbloat. I have not tried to limit the bandwidth on my Nighthawk though as I'm still a bit skeptical to the whole thing - can me lowering the bandwidth speeds I'm paying for really be the answer? If there's something smart I can do with the Orbi AX6000 still though, I'd love to know, because otherwise, I'll probably return it for $750. I'm not quite an expert on reading specs for I am not experienced enough with modem/routers nor have the aptitude to differentiate everything from each other - at least right now. I'm hoping that someone here can read about this specific modem router I'm using to let me know if it's no good and could reference me to another modem if it is indeed the problem. Going back to the Orbi wired thing, being how it's a mesh system and the signal should supposedly be incredibly strong, perhaps that could also be the problem? Because it's not "truly" wired, seeing how it's really a satellite connection. I don't have an ethernet port installed in my room, but if I have to have someone come out to install one so I could have "true" wired capabilities in order to fix my issue, I may have to do that. This was quite sporadic and I apologize - I'm writing this as I go and I'd like to post this before I fall asleep. If I left out any important details please feel free to let me know. I'm aware that the topic of bufferbloats have been addressed on reddit before, but seeing that this modem is incredibly under the radar, I hope it warrants your attention. [link] [comments] |
When restarting modem/router is it better to restart both or one after the other? Posted: 23 Jan 2021 03:16 PM PST My internet has been dcing on me constantly and restarting router is a common solution I hear. Is it better to disconnect modem first then router, router first then modem, or both at the same time? also when I disconnect them do I plug it back right away or wait a certain amount of time? Can someone sanity check my future ethernet setup Posted: 23 Jan 2021 11:18 AM PST Hey folks, I recently bought an older house and would like to run some ethernet. I figure if I'm in the walls anyway, I might as well make it a whole home upgrade, but before I press buy, I was hoping someone could let me know if I'm making any dumb mistakes. I want to have a wall plate with 2 ethernet ports in 7 different rooms. My plan is to have an unmanaged 16 port network switch in my furnace room - from there I'll run 14 super short patch cables from the switch to keystone wall plates (2x 12 port wall plates, I can't find one with more than 12). From there I'll use 14 punch down keystone jacks, run the cables (I'll buy 1000 ft of Cat6 23AWG solid core cable) through the walls, and terminate on the other sides with 14 more punch down keystone jacks. Is that the recommended way to set up this kind of thing? The two main things I'm uncertain about are: 1) Is it normal to have like 14 ports right near the router and 14 little patch cables? I've watched a ton of youtube tutorials but don't often see a plate like this one. 2) Are punch down keystone jacks the way to go? I'd need 28 of them so they add up. Anyway, I'd love advice on what I should do differently or just a thumbs up if I'm on the right track. Everything together is around $350 CAD so it's not the end of the world if I mess up, but it's a decent chunk of change. [link] [comments] |
Finished 3 Storey Townhouse with Cat5e RJ11 runs. Best way to create hardwired network? Posted: 23 Jan 2021 02:57 PM PST Hi All, Moved into a newish 3 Storey Townhouse (inside unit not end unit) that has Coax & Cat5e lines for Telephone. Nothing is daisy chained - all separate runs. The issue is that rather than terminating all of the runs to a location inside my unit, they all appear to go up to the Attic through to the end unit next to us and then to boxes on the outside of that end unit.. I'd love to use that preexisting Cat5e to with RJ45 ends and other equipment (switches etc) to create a hardwired network but I'm pretty sure I'm hooped here. That is because I don't control the point of covergence I can't control the network. Would I be right in that thinking? So with that in mind, I think my only option is to attempt to fish more Cat5/6 next to those runs but bring it down to a central point in my unit. Anyone got any ideas? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Jan 2021 05:06 PM PST I checked my router logs and saw DOS Attack Storm attacked packets for 20 seconds. This happened a couple times a day and the ip is from my iphone. Does anyone know what this means or if I should be worried? I don't know much about what is going on. [link] [comments] |
What is slowing down my internet? Posted: 23 Jan 2021 04:45 PM PST I live in a small town, and have DSL from a small local isp. They claim that we should be getting "up to 50 Mbps". I get about 9Mbps. I live within 10 miles of their HQ, and I imagine I'm even closer to their actual hub, since the town I live in is the biggest population center around. We have the same internet where I work with much faster speeds. My router is ancient and does up to 300Mbps according to the specs, and my modem is also pretty venerable. It's a Zhone 6511-A1. https://www.cnet.com/products/zhone-6511-a1-bridge-router-dsl-modem-desktop/ I don't know what specs are relevant, so I've included a link. My main question is this: Is my router or modem dragging my speed down the most, and will it actually improve my speed that much if I replace one or both? EDIT: I'm on wifi. Over ethernet I get about 1-2Mpbs faster speeds. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Jan 2021 04:39 PM PST Hi, Need some advice please. I moved into a new home and got the internet installed in the basement. The internet service provider provides a modem/router combo (bell) which was installed in the basement. I have cat5e on the main level and upstairs and the speeds upstairs are not that great. What should I do? Can i plug another router into the cat5e and it will work? Should I get a wireless access point? The cat5e is run through the walls. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Jan 2021 07:50 AM PST I recently bought a DEVOLO Magic 1 WiFi 2-1-3 Powerline Adapter, as I need ethernet on the second and third floor, as well as in the basement of our house. I paid an absurd 260 Swiss Franks for it. When I installed it I only got 0.7 Mbps up and something like 0.5 down. I proceeded to return it. Is this normal? I was also thinking of laying ethernet cables, but I think this would be rather expensive, as our house is quite old. Does anybody know how I could fix my problem? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Conduit distance from datacomm distribution panel Posted: 23 Jan 2021 12:46 PM PST Is there any issue in not bringing conduit closer to a distribution panel? I'm being lazy and trying to avoid cutting extension conduit for only a few additional feet. The panel will be 2'-3' above the floor, and currently the conduit only penetrates the floor 4" or so. Here's everything temporarily attached https://imgur.com/a/O3nNrVL [link] [comments] |

So update to my Strict Nat issue. Still need help or a direction Posted: 23 Jan 2021 09:10 AM PST I can play fortnite at 10 or less ping but warzone is around 75+ and is completely unplayable. Both Cold War and warzone are telling me I have a strict nat type. I've port forwarded, turned off my firewall, replaced my modem and made a static Ip. Nothing has gotten better. With the exception of when I just got my replacement modem, when I logged into warzone it said my nat type was open but it went back to strict in about 3 minutes. Is this strictly an issue with their servers? If so why are more people not experiencing this? Is it my ports? If so I've replaced the modem? I don't understand. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Jan 2021 03:06 PM PST I was wondering if I could use a modem that has multiple ports in them for my router and gaming console to work together at the same time. My router is having problems right now which messes with the online gaming because the connection is always fluctuating unlike the modem, but the WiFi works well with everything else that doesn't need a consistent connection like Netflix. I'm going to get a new router, but I just want to know if it is possible to do for right now since it's a problem to play anything online right now. I do not know much about this stuff and what I keep reading online always has different answers so I just decided to ask here myself. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 23 Jan 2021 02:54 PM PST Hello, I am very inexperienced in this stuff and I was hoping I could get some assistance with this current problem. I am trying to change my router's IP address. I've called spectrum and I've unplugged my modem for 10 minutes. However, none of these solutions have worked for me, and I was hoping you guys could better guide me. [link] [comments] |
