    First ethernet run!

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:24 PM PST

Ran a cable from the router, through the attic and into my office. It's cat6, with same keystone jacks. Went relatively smooth, no major issues, other than being out of shape, and results are 948 up 948 down! Son says: "Get mine done ...NOW!" 🤣 His room is next to the office so I'm just doing a run along the wall and using an old phone connection spot for the keystone jacks.

    Bury Fiber to Ethernet

I need to get ethernet into a shack 60 feet away from my house. Would two of these with this cable buried work? Or am I missing something?

My connection to the internet is extremely poor, can I circumvent this by using another ISP?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 05:15 AM PST

    Hey,

I know just about nothing about networking but my family has a single router that constantly loses it connection to the internet. I've called my ISP multiple times about this and they say it's because more and more people are using the internet due to the quarantine but I know that other people in my area are not experiencing these problems.

I've saved up quite a bit of money and I'm wondering what are my options if I want to have a seperate internet connection from the rest of my family. Would it be as easy as just calling another ISP and having them set up a router in my room? I feel like I'm missing something relevant here.

EDIT: I have the Bell Home Hub 2000 if that's at all relevant.

    Thanks!

New Home is prewired but not fully terminated. Need advice on finishing the home network.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 04:48 PM PST

We will be moving to a new 3 story house which is looks prewired with Cat 6 cables. Some cables are blue and some are white (not certain if that is significant).

There are total 10 drops. All the drops seem to be behind blank wall plates with no ethernet terminations. Here are some photos :

    https://i.imgur.com/gVNrWQY.jpg

    https://i.imgur.com/Et0KRMy.jpg

All the cables seem to be terminating at a media panel. Photo here :

    https://i.imgur.com/JmUpFrN.jpg

    Here is the layout :

    1st floor : 2100 sq ft - 4 drops

    2nd floor : 2300 sq ft - 4 drops

    basement : 1300 sq ft - 2 drops

    ______________________________________________________________________

I'm a tech savvy person but have never done any full home networking before. I'll be starting out with a full blank slate, excited about that.

My goal is to have access points on each floor and 6-10 security cameras managed by a blue iris server.

    1) Should I snip those cables at each drop and terminate them as 2 rj45 ports ? I'm worried I will a snip a cable which should not be snipped.

    2) What is the best way to test the cable throughout efficiency after crimping all of them ?

    3) Here is network setup I'm thinking of :

    TP-Link TL-R605 Router

    TP-Link Omada Cloud Controller OC200

    TP-Link Omada AC1750 EAP245 x3

    TP-Link TL-SG1024DE 24 Port Gigabit Switch

Does this seem fine ? Is there anything I can tweak to make the home setup better ?

Comcast is the only option in this area and we will be getting the 1gbps plan. I may add their Xfi complete package just to get the unlimited data package. So I may have to figure out a way to integrate their comcast supplied router/ modem in this network somewhere.

Only getting 100mbps instead of 1000mbps like I should get. Does anyone know what causes this?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 02:46 PM PST

So today I had my first try at crimping my own network cable, because I want to set up a home server. Its a kind of a long story, but basically, the cable that connects my pc to the router is a bit damaged, so I wanted to replace it with a Cat6 cable (my old one is 5e). I have 1000mbps internet and my old cable gave me 1000mbps.

I followed the steps exactly (making sure the cable isn't damaged, the right color sequence, etc.) and after a couple tries I got connectivity. However, all I'm getting now is 100mbps instead of 1000mbps. It's straight through and it has to be the right cable. Just in case I will include pictures of the cable I am using and the way I crimped it (I hope you can see it). Also I made sure to use connectors for stranded cables.

Is this easily solvable? Did I do something wrong?

Silly question, will T568a keystones matter with T568b patch cables?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:14 PM PST

I have ran a bunch of cat6a to a patch panel as T568A on both ends. If I plug in a store purchased t568B patch cable it wont matter right, it will be straight through cable? It wont convert the signal to a crossover... I am probably over thinking this.

How to "enable" existing ethernet wall sockets?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:48 AM PST

Hi, I have a few ethernet wall ports around the house in different rooms. My ISP hub is connected to one of the said ports with ethernet cable to WAN port on the back of the unit. I tried connecting my laptop to one of these sockets in another room with ethernet cable but there was no internet connection. I guess it doesn't work that way. If I connect my ISP provided hub( router?) to the same socket it works fine.

The "central station" with network switch and, Cat5e cables and some other units is in the garage downstairs. So my question is how to I make these ethernet ports work? Do I have to take ISP hub to the distribution panel and connect it to the network switch?

Paying for 300/300, getting 300/5 on main computer

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 04:29 PM PST

Hey everyone, bear with me if im doing this whole reddit thing extremely wrong as it is my first reddit post.

I could use some help with my home network as i am 100% sure the ISP has nothing to do with my problem. I am sitting one floor above my router which is a DG2200TN (this probably wont do you any good as it is a proprietary router from "Telenor" my norwegian ISP.) and my phone and laptop both test for 300/300mbps but my desktop computer, for whom i purchased an ASUS PCE AC68 wireless PCE NIC(https://www.asus.com/Networking-IoT-Servers/Adapters/All-series/PCEAC68/) will only test for 300/5mbps, i have tried connecting to both 2.4Ghz band and the 5Ghz band of my SSID.

Does anyone know if there is some throttling going on in windows which could be the problem? Maybe a FW?

Edit: Uninstalled MSI Dragon Center from computer and speed was fine.

Edit 2: Tweaking LAN-Manager in dragon Center also fixes the problem. CFosSpeed seems to be the main problem.

    Thanks :)

Packet Loss and Response Spikes with Wifi Extender

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 01:32 PM PST

I recently purchased a D-Link DAP-1610 wifi extender and I'm having some latency spike issues. I ran some pings (results below) and found the the average/minimum response times were actually really good, but every 3-5 seconds I'll have a packet loss or latency spike. My wifi extender and wifi modem are also very close to one another (same floor and can't be more than 20ft away).

Is this fairly common for network extenders? Can this be fixed by running another extender model? Does anyone have any ideas for a work around or fix?

On a side note, I've also tried a powerline adapter (Trendndet TPL-407E2K/A) but almost every single breaker in my house is a Siemens CAFCI, and it will trip my breakers very inconsistently (usually only when I'm gaming, but also sometimes I can game for 4-6 hours without issues, and other times it will trip every 2-3 minutes after restarting).

Here are some ping tests to google

    Ping statistics for 2607:f8b0:400a:803::2003: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 3, Lost = 1 (25% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 25ms, Maximum = 60ms, Average = 37ms Ping statistics for 2607:f8b0:400a:803::2003: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 24ms, Maximum = 1006ms, Average = 271ms

    Continuous Ping Test #1 (google.ca)

    Ping statistics for 2607:f8b0:400a:800::2003: Packets: Sent = 42, Received = 42, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 21ms, Maximum = 258ms, Average = 61ms

    Continuous Ping Test #2 (google.ca)

    Ping statistics for 2607:f8b0:400a:808::200e: Packets: Sent = 69, Received = 65, Lost = 4 (5% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 21ms, Maximum = 488ms, Average = 112ms

Continuous Ping Test #3 (my own default gateway)

    Ping statistics for 192.168.1.254: Packets: Sent = 61, Received = 59, Lost = 2 (3% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 381ms, Average = 68ms

Captive Portal vs. WiFi Password for Guest Network

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 08:15 PM PST

Hi, so, sorry if this is the wrong sub for this. So, stupid question: for a guest network, would you use open wifi with a captive portal (traditional setup), secured wifi with no captive portal, or captive portal behind secured wifi? I am running Ubiquiti with this, in an environment permitting for guest interactions.

    Thank you!

Would an Ethernet-USB connection be give me faster Internet than just Wi-Fi?

A bad thunderstorm fried my LAN port on my PC so I can't just do direct Ethernet connection. Would it be better for me to get a Ethernet-USB adapter or to get a network card for Wi-Fi?

    Firewalla vs ubiquiti USG?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 11:33 AM PST

Ok, so my family has a small business with two locations. I'm kind of their go-to tech support guy, and have been tasked with creating a vpn bridge between the two locations. I have quite a bit of tech experience up my sleeve, but I'm looking for something simple and reliable since I'm not always around. My question is, would the ubiquiti USG be a good choice for a vpn bridge? Or should I consider a firewalla box for this situation?

    Ghost wifi?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 07:01 PM PST

This is weird. I set up a new modem and wifi router with my Xfinity internet service tonight. I used a new name for the wifi but I'm still seeing the old SSID listed as available with no internet. How is that possible? The old Xfinity modem is unplugged.

    Trouble setting up network.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:59 PM PST

I have 2 xboxs, 1 computer, 1 wap, a router, and a modem. I want the xboxs to have static ips as well as the cpu, and i want the wap to use the reserved dhcp 100-250 for wifi devices, which i preset on the router. I do not have waps mac nor can i get it.

Troubleshooting with cpu and i can access google but no other sites. Cant access routers webpage through computer but i can on phone through incontrol2(peplink). I have been using routers ip as default gateway and dns primary, no alternative. Help. Statics are all out of dhcp reserved range.

Does it matter which router I get to couple with my access points?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:51 PM PST

    Hey all,

Made a thread earlier and was amazed at the well thought out responses so thank you all so much for that!

One more silly question - I am going to setup a AP in our new home and was wondering if buying a router now would impact the solution in the future?

I only ask as our router is now 5 years old and we want to upgrade, although will be building/moving into our new house in ~6-9 months.

    Thanks!

Help with setting up ethernet connection through Lan port

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:41 PM PST

I have a gigibit connection. I am down stairs in the basement, my router is upstairs.

I have a Lan port in the room next to me. I plan to buy a long Ethernet cord for my PC. Are wall jacks like those slower than just hooking it straight up to the router? If so, is it by a lot? I want to utilize all I can and I'm not sure what's the best option I should go for.

Any help would be appreciated.... thanks!

    Boosting wifi to MIL suite

    Powerline Adapters with Solar

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 06:00 PM PST

I have a solar system with microinverters tied directly into my AC power system.

I am considering a powerline network hopefully with at least 1.0-2.5Gbps throughout.

Does the solar electrical augmentation and subpanel affect the efficacy of the powerline system?

Multiple network switches and better wireless coverage

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 05:57 PM PST

I live in a moderately sized house with a little bit of property. I'm planning on putting 3 network switches in different rooms (unmanaged tp-link litewave 5 port switches) as each member of my family has 2 or 3 devices they want to use hardwired. I was also looking into getting a new router as we have the default spectrum router and modem (not combined). Wifi coverage is currently not great as the router is located in the corner of the house. Should I be looking into a single unit or getting an access point in addition to the router?

    I made a boo boo.

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 02:08 PM PST

I am with Start.ca in Canada. Service works great.

Today, my wife and I were cleaning our basement and the smart panel where all our network cables go (from the 5 jacks upstairs) was due for a tidying. We used to be with Cogeco and they had a power supply still hooked up, splitters for the TVs etc. So I proceeded to unscrew the rats nest their installer left us and went back to just the cables feeding our box.

But no matter which cable I hook up to our modem now, the thing will not go online. I called start and guy on the phone said the lights I'm missing means the modem isn't getting a signal. But nothing I plug in works?

I'm kind of lost at the moment and I'm open to ideas. I'm pretty sure the line I want is one of two, but I'm neither seem to work. I'm not scared to dip into tech projects and don't usually have problems, but looking back this was not my smoothest move.

    Any advice is appreciated.

I can't imagine the splitters had anything to do with it working before but I don't know.

You guys know about DSL? Mom's service plan got upgraded. They're shipping her a new modem (which I don't think she needs).

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 05:53 PM PST

I found a Netgear D6200 at the thrift store a couple years ago and hooked that up for her. I'm not sure they're aware of this (I just copied all the login junk off the other modem). It's definitely compatible.

Recent phone line upgrades in the area mean that 40 mb/s will now be possible, a huge improvement over the 1.5 she's had the last 13 years or so (don't get me started).

So anyway. The Netgear has AC wifi and gigabit LAN. It's surely one of the finer DSL modem-router combo dealies ever made. This thing can handle it just fine, I'd wager.

So how to proceed? Can I just turn it off, then back on again, once the new service plan starts? Is that even necessary? Got any ideas?

    Alternatives to Powerline and MoCA?

    Posted: 02 Jan 2021 05:33 PM PST

    Hi everyone!

I'm looking for some alternative for a wired internet connection that's not MoCA or Powerline

I'm currently living with my parents and my bedroom is the one furthest from the modem and router (15-20 meters or 40-60ft away)

The current setup is the ISP provided modem/router combo working as a modem and a D-Link DIR-842 with OpenWrt as my actual router

For the device side of things, I have my desktop with an AX200 Wifi Card and kicked everyone out of the 5GHz wifi so that my PC is the only device connected. It works quite well, but it's not reliable and/or stable given the distance between the PC and the router, especially considering that I live stream while playing my games, which can sometimes lead to weird connection issues and dropped frames.

    Here's where my limitations start:

    - Can't do MoCA (we don't have coaxial in our house)

    - My room is on a different breaker, so Powerline is worse than Wifi (I have very old Powerline adapters and even those are being used for an IPTV box)

    - Can't move my router because the fiber cables aren't long enough and we have no place for it

If there are any suggestions, that would be really appreciated. If you have any questions, I'll try my best to reply as fast as possible!

    Thank you :D

will i notice a significant difference in speed/ping in game by upgrading from a cat5e to a cat8 ethernet cable?

i don't really understand this stuff, but from what i've read online it seems cat8 has a much higher data transfer speed than the cat5e.
