Can't assign Linux samba NAS as a network drive

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 02:10 PM PST

Hi, I am trying to map my linux box as a network drive in windows but windows does not seem to access the drive. I am running linux and samba and have everything configured right, my two machines are connected via mobile tethering and both computers can ping each other. I have tried to assign the network drive with both hostname (\\server\nas) and IP (\\192.168.43.17\nas) but without success. Any ideas? I got everything working in a virtualbox lab environment with a virtual switch and basically have the same configs in irl as I had in vbox. I'm beginning to suspect the problem is in my mobile network ISP not allowing me to build a connection? I'm running linux mint btw, and as I said; both machines can ping each other and the file name for the nas is correct etc.

Laptop getting +600Mbps while desktop is getting around 230Mbps with the same Ethernet cable

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 01:36 PM PST

So I installed Ethernet in my house and testing the cables I detected that my desktop is getting 250Mbps, so I tried that cable with my laptop, and it gets the full 600Mbps. Why is this happening?

As far as I know, both devices have Gigabit ports.

    Ty guys.

How do I connect to my home network?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 04:02 PM PST

I've lived in my house for a couple of years now, and finally had time to try to connect my router to the pre-wired network. I have this panel in a closet with a distribution board, however, I can't figure out how I'm supposed to connect to it.

Phone and computer keep switching between 2.4ghz wifi and 5ghz

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 08:15 AM PST

Hi, There are multiple routers in my residence and some are 2.4ghz and others 5ghz . The problem is my phone keeps switching between 5ghz and 2.4ghz . I've used wifi analyzer and I could see all the routers around me. They all have the same name and they are all close to me like 5m for the 2.4ghz 6m for the 5ghz ect... Do you have a solution to force use the 5ghz routers only ? Or to use a specific router ? ( I don't have the permission to do anything to the routers) so the solution must uses the phone, if I had access to the routers I would simply put 2 different SSIDs one for the 2.4ghz routers and another one for the 5ghz routers I have a redmi note 7 with miui 12

    Thank you for your help

EDIT: please guys, I said it before in this post, I can't change the routers SSID, I don't have the permission to touch the routers

Adding a domain name to a home web server?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 12:46 PM PST

    Hello,

I am currently looking to host my own website using my home network and a raspberry pi. Its only a small hobby project and my whole website will probably 5mb max.

I want to have a domain name. I was looking at epik.com and they have xyz domains for about 2 dollars. My question is, can I use that domain for my website or do I have to use some sort of special one.

    Thanks for all replies!

    Advice on WIRED router

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 06:37 PM PST

I haven't bought a router in a long time and was hoping someone could suggest the top one or two wired routers for consideration.

Money is no object but it doesn't need to be made of gold for no reason...

It's a small network for one floor(of a house) , but I may consider adding an access point for another floor at some point down the road.

    Thank you!!

Internet disconnects and will not return until router is restarted

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 02:39 PM PST

As the title states my internet will seemingly randomly disconnect from my router, all devices lose internet and it will not return until the router is restarted. I live in an apartment complex so the router is connected to the wall. I have tried multiple routers and the same issue occurs. I dont know much but if I had to guess it seems to me like its an issue with my isp in that my isp disconnects my router from internet when it is under heavy load, such as downloading games and streaming video at the same or performing a speedtest, as the problem tends to occur when this is happening. What should I do?

    Sending/Receiving files, "FTP-like system".

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 05:42 PM PST

    Hi all,

I thought I was smarter than I am and could figure this out but turns out I am not! And I have been reading that FTP are not necessarily the smartest way to go anymore.

I work in video post-production, every now and then I have to send hundreds of Gb of files to clients/collaborators and it's always a problem because of the various limitations on the services I use (dropbox, shipping hard drive..etc). So, I'd love to finally set up a FTP or FTP-like system where clients can just login, grab the files and drop some back on there without limitations. I have an Asus RT-AC66U router, an external RAID system where the media is stored and would love if it could run via an old macbook (2014). I also have a macbook running on Big Sur or a Windows 10 machine as well.

So my question is, can I get there with the hardware I have and if so what would be your setup recommendation? Doesn't have to be extra secure as I am not dealing with extremely sensitive content but safe enough that I don't just naively open my whole computer to the world.

Thanks so much in advance for any insight or help!

Deleted Network and Z Drive is Gone

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 05:00 PM PST

We have two computers on a network that share a Z drive. The one wasn't connecting to the network so I accidently deleted the network instead of resetting it. The network and access to the Z drive disappeared on the first computer too. Did I delete the Z drive or just connection to the network? I still have internet connection if that says anything.

Maximum download speed of NETGEAR c7000

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 04:42 PM PST

I bought this modem/router from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0781Z5PCL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) that is advertised to support "Cable Plans Up to 400 Mbps" but when it arrived today I noticed on the packaging that it says it supports "Cable Modem Speed up to 960Mbps 24x8 channel bonding".

The data sheet seems to confirm that 960 Mbps is correct. https://www.netgear.com/images/datasheet/networking/CableModems/C7000.pdf

I'm a little confused. Does Amazon have this mislabeled?

    Recommendations for equipment

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 08:22 PM PST

I'm sorta throwing together a list of equipment that I want to use to setup my network. Right now, I have:

    • NETGEAR 24-Port Gigabit Ethernet Smart Managed Plus PoE
    • NETGEAR Nighthawk Cable Modem CM1200
    • (Probably) Ubiquiti NanoHD APs (3)

I'm not mentioning the less complicated racks, patch panel, etc. fwiw I'll be on 440mbps Spectrum.

I'm wondering if there are any router recommendations out there.

I'm not necessarily sold on any of the above list, so if someone has better suggestions I'm all ears. I'm a software engineer by day, and a more general geek by night so I'm really into the idea of having to get into the nitty-gritty of this stuff (hence the managed switch)

Is there a preferred (cheaper) alternative to the Ubiquiti APs?

Have a Cox tech coming out Monday in person, what should I tell him?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 08:17 PM PST

I called Cox the other day to complain about my packet loss which is hovering around 9%, and the pings that do come back are all over the place. I went through all the motions with the level 1 person on the phone, affirming the cables are connected properly, and restarting the modem (Which I replaced a week ago to make sure it wasn't the modem) I have also made sure all the signal levels are fine coming to the coax modem. I ran ping tests to various sites, including some of Cox's own equipment and verified the ping loss is about 9%. I also ran traceroutes and saved logs of them which show the high pings and drops are occurring at their street box. What should I tell the tech who is coming in person that they scheduled? Will he understand these concepts or is there something else I should do to try to get a higher level engineer from Cox to look at the issue?

allow containers on my home network to be reached via hostname.mydomain.com

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 08:06 PM PST

Hi all.I have a home server running Proxmox with various containers and VMS.I also have a domain name that I can point at my home IP, which is static. What kind of service do I need to run at the edge, or what kind of basic setup would I need, that would allow those services and VM's to be accessed via hostnames like:

    hostname.myrealdomain.com

I could easily spin up a fresh VM and run a DNS or nameserver or whatever it is that I need, but for the life of me, all my research is turning up information on how to FORWARD dns queries from inside the LAN to outside, and NOT about making my inside hosts reachable from the outside. If someone can atleast point me in the direction of what kind of services I need to be hosting, it would greatly be appreciated.

What kind of service do I need to run that will examine traffic, no matter WHAT port the traffic is coming from, and just direct it to an IP based on what the DNS hostname it requested? Ideally I would host this service on my edge router (like a pfsense box) and have it perform the internal DNS forwarding when necessary.

No internet on 1 device on my 2nd 5Ghz band

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 04:18 PM PST

Hello, I have a triband router and recently my laptop stopped connecting to my 2nd 5Ghz band that I use for gaming as it gets much better speeds due to less channel interference. My router is an Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000. I originally was able to connect to it no problem. Now, however, it can connect to the 2nd 5Ghz band, but there is no internet. Websites don't load, there is no connection at all. There is still connection on the 1st 5Ghz band. My other laptop and my phone both have solid connections on both 5Ghz bands so I do not believe the issue is router side. The laptop that stopped being able to have internet on the band is an MSI GS66 with a killer wifi network card (I know, it sucks, but it's what came with the laptop). I don't know if that is the issue, or if some setting in the laptop is the issue. I just want to be able to connect to the 2nd 5Ghz band again as it did before.

IPv4 vs IPv6 using different MTU?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:51 PM PST

I'm having an issue when connecting to my NAS over a 10Gbps connection with IPv4 and IPv6. It seems as though the IPv6 connection is not using the jumbo frame MTU 9000 setting. I am using a Thunderbolt 3 10Gbps adapter on a MacBook running the latest macOS Big Sur 11.1. The IPv4 still works at the full speed.

Small ISP here: Is the Ubiquiti Aircube AC still a good offer?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 06:17 AM PST

So trying to find a decent, stock all in one router with decent wifi coverage on a budget for our small list of clients.

Use Case: Standard replacement for an ISP WiFi router. Most connections will be a 50-200Mbps but 500 and 1000Mbps is offered as well. While I would love to do a custom EdgeRouter X -> Access Point and even branch to mesh. Most of the users aren't too worried about all the advanced stuff and want the speed they are paying for with decent WiFi coverage.

I previously asked which router people would prefer but it didn't really clarify too much. Except that I should avoid Tenda and Huawei haha.

This leads me all the way back to offering the Ubiquiti Aircube AC as our stock router for all the users.

    Alternatives and suggestions are welcome

Is there a Wifi Router that's easy to setup as a Git Server?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:30 PM PST

By easy I mean click on the interface in the web console.

I have a linksys wrt ac1200, love it as a file server but I can't install git on it, unless I do all sort of command line kungfu to get a new firmware. I've tried with a mini pc and can't even install things if it gets a bit complicated so I'm going for easy.

I'm wondering if there is one of those with one click to install git server.

    Office port not hooked up

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:25 PM PST

Hey all. I just started a job after college. And I am essentially the whole it department. I got a new office with new Ethernet port but the port are not hot. This might be a dumb and simple question but I have never have hand on experience with network equipment before. Just knowledge based. But I know the ports on the patch panel that connect to my office port. And there is nothing plug in to them. If I take a Ethernet cord that is already connected to a managed switch but is not connected at the other end and connect it to the patch panel port for my office. Will that work? Or do I need to go into the switch setting and edit something? Or could it mess up the entire network in anyway? I want to make sure I know what I am doing before touching the equipment. The switch is a Tp link 2600G-28TS. Tia.

Gigabit Fiber only 100 mbps after IP change

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 07:23 PM PST

So I changed my ATT modem bgw320-505 LAN IP to 10.1.X.X and since then it only hands off 100mbps to any device connected. WiFi works as intended with devices testing at gigabit speeds. There are two devices that were previously wired for several months that get 1000mbps handoff but any new device that was connected within the last week that previously had 1000mbps now only has 100. I've reset the router to factory defaults, put it in IP passthrough mode to my ubiquiti USG, and even phoned ATT with no luck. They did send me a new modem but it would not connect and I haven't phoned them about that issue. I did notice that it erorred after it switched to 10.1.X.X subnet saying something about not allowed, but all the devices already updated. Anyone else have this issue? Or know what could be causing this and the fix?

    Need Help With Home Network

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 06:57 PM PST

A few years back when my house was under construction, I ran CAT5e and coax from my telco closet to most walls of my 2 1/2 story 2500sf (interior) house. I have been living with slow DSL for a while as there is not much else is available in my area other than Spectrum, and I have been avoiding that until now. I am going to be installing spectrum cable shortly 200/10 while waiting for fiber. I would like to have wireless Internet access throughout my house which is approximately and also to run hardwired RJ45 connections to at least 4-6 locations, if not more. My current set up has two RJ45 connections that plug into my current modem router provided by the local telco provider, and the rest of the Internet connectivity in my house is off of the wireless capability of the modem router. But I want to purchase my own equipment to cover my house both for wireless connectivity, as well as wired. I'm currently in a rabbit hole trying to learn about home networking and it seems like a pretty steep learning curve. All of my home computers are macs so whatever I do needs to be accessible on that platform. I was studying ubiquiti and mikrotek equipment, but I don't yet quite understand how to pull it all together. Can anyone provide me a good starting point for understanding how I might set this up, without throwing out a lot of money on needless equipment as well as perhaps any videos or course material that might be a good primer for me. I would really appreciate it, as I am a bit lost. I could just install a mesh system and be done with it. But I really want to understand how to build a more robust network that is going to be more secure and reliable. For the moment, would connecting two TP Link A7 1750s that indicate having mesh capability together work? I can install one in the telco closet and connect the cable that runs from a distant location and plug the other router in there? Would that provide me fairly decent coverage for the moment while I figure the rest out? Or would I need a switch to be able to do this? Would that even work? I was considering a TP Link C2300 but not sure that that would cover my whole house. Thanks for any help or advice.

Backyard/ Outdoor WiFi AP- Any experience with EnGenius?

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 03:06 PM PST

    Hi All-

My house is all stucco and concrete block, so the signal from my wifi AP in the house is not useable in the backyard/pool area I ran an ethernet cable to my garage and will use POE+ to power this outdoor rated AP. I have a lot of experience working with enterprise AP's like Ruckus, Aruba, and Cisco, but as this is my house these are way out of budget- Under $1k. I'd like the AP to feature wifi 6- EnGenius came out of with an AP that would work for me however I have no experience with this brand (but did come across some comments that they were buggy or needed frequent restarts. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this?/ or any feedback
