    $450 USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Yes, if certified or has warranty

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Minor, but would like decent quality

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important at all, will be used at home, primarily

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      Nope

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Minecraft, Terraria, Stardew Valley, other low tire games, nothing heavy.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd love decent storage, if possible, not a deal breaker. SSD would be nice.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'd love to stay in the $400 or less range, but willing to move up $450 USD.

    Hello, here's to a great 2021!

    Thanks for the help.

    · Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Any (USD) USA

    · Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Yes

    · How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Not terrible build quality. The rest doesn't matter. I'm sure it'd suffice.

    · How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Doesn't matter.

    · Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

~15.5" with a wide bezel would work but

--16"+ would be great and preferred.

    · Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    No. Web browsing & Excel.

    · If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    No.

    · Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    1) Preferably AMD. latest gen (4000s) would be nice but doesn't have to be.

    2) No discrete GPU.

    · Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

This laptop is for a friend. She mainly cares about the screen at least looking large. The drive and RAM likely don't matter since it can be replaced.

Is there an opinion on build quality between MSI vs Razer?

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 03:40 AM PST

Every now and then I ogle at these slim gaming laptops and come close to purchasing. It's pretty much a yearly ritual and I'm doing this again now lol.

I always seem to come back to MSI stealth vs. Razer blade. I can see that you tend to get better spec for your money with MSI stealths, but then the blades seem to get away with a better overall image/reputation? I'm trying to look up if this is because there's maybe a general consensus that they're longer lasting / have a better build quality?

Or maybe some other reason? Thanks guys.

Choosing between these 2 Acer Laptops

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 03:22 AM PST

Hello, I'm about to order a new laptop but i'm a bit conflicted between these 2

    Number 1 & Number 2

I'll be occasionally using the laptop, mostly for light video edit and playing some MOBA games, and student work! That's all about it!

Does it make any sense to spend the extra bucks for the i7 and the extra ram, or am i good with the i5 and 8gb?

    Thanks and happy new year!

Need a cheap laptop only for a few months

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 02:49 AM PST

So I'm studying for one year abroad. At my home country I already a have a good desktop PC, so I've never felt the need of owning a laptop. Now I'm struggling a bit with only a tablet with online school. I want this laptop to run zoom and a simple word processor to take notes at the same time. I don't really need anything else, really. With the tablet I can already run many things, but I miss a proper OS (having folders, windows side by side, etc). Once summer comes and I'm finished with school, I wouldn't use it anymore (maybe I'd resell or keep it in case of emergency).

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Around 250-300 EUR range, maybe I can push it a bit further. I can purchase it from either Spain or Germany.

3 rd Party Warranty for laptops in Canada

    Posted: 01 Jan 2021 02:34 AM PST

    Hello Everyone,

I have a Lenovo laptop around 4 years old. It originally had a 3 year warranty plan that ran out last year. I contacted lenovo for an extension , but unfortunately they said they can only extend warranty only once. Can anyone suggest a good 3rd party warranty (With accidental protection if possible) in Canada? It will also help if they offer warranties for other brads as well other than lenovo.

    Thanks in advance

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

1000$ CAD (can be more if necessary, max 1500$)

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance > battery life >build quality > form factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

14" is minimum, would prefer 15" or bigger

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Small AutoCAD files, multiple huge pdf (talking over 1000 pages, like building codes), excel/word, multiple chrome tabs, Teams video reunion.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not for gaming (but if I can play Rocket league, I won't complain...)

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

No need touchscreen, fingerprint reader or optical drive. Would like a full keyboard. 16Gb ram and 512 Gb SSD would be a minimum.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm currently using a Thinkpad T430s with a i5 3210M, 8Gb memory and 256 Gb SSD with a nvidia NVS 5200M GPU. I think a 16Gb memory and 512Gb SSD would be a start. I also wish to have 2 docking stations for work and home so I can quickly connect monitors/internet/keyboard/speakers. Needs Windows Pro.

I was looking at a T490s or Thinkpad X1 Carbon, but to be honest, I'm completely lost with all the options and pricing...

Thank you all in advance for any help, much appreciated!

Touch-screen, 120hz+ screen, IPS with good viewing angles so no bad anti reflective coatings Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've been looking a ton and I from what I've seen I can't find anything like I describe out there. I basically want a light 12"-15.6" 2-in-1 touchscreen laptop with a 120Hz+ IPS 1080p+ screen that doesn't have any coatings that ruin the viewing angles or dramatically worsen the image.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Open to Refurbished

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance > Build Quality > Battery

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Don't mind having a heavy laptop but thinness is pretty important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      13-15 inches

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

FPS does not really matter as long as it hits 60 FPS at medium-high settings?

Good keyboard, great build quality, great screen, good touchpad, fingerprint would be a plus.

Was debating on the new Apple MacBook Air M1 chip with the added option of 16gb ram or the Asus G14. Gaming is not really a priority but I wouldn't mind if I could game. Mostly only play single player/fighting games.

    Looking for a laptop for drawing/programming/school? Under/around ~$2.5k

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 04:52 PM PST

Hello! I thought this would be the best place to get opinions. Ive been looking for a laptop for a while- for reference the Surface Book 3 peaked my interest. I'd like it to be a 2-in-1 and fairly small so Im not breaking my back walking around with it in my backpack. Upgradable would be wonderful as well, although its not required. Was wondering if there were any more good options I should look at? I'd like for it to be able to handle some basic compiling as far as programming goes. Im working mostly in C++ currently.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      Nothing over ~$2.5k

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yeah, sure.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

2-in-1 is pretty important. Battery life, not so much. I need it to be fast, though.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Preferably smaller.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      14"-13"?

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Yes, I program in C++ mostly and I'd probably use a drawing program as well. Gaming as well, but only a little to help boredom lol

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I can have stuff on lower settings, I'd probably only play time-wasting games. No FPS games unless Im desperate lmao

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Touch screen and the ability to use a pen. Maybe some extra ports bit thats not important. Id also like it to be upgradable if possible!!

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

      Thank you!!

not sure if these are good choices?

    Posted: 31 Dec 2020 04:38 PM PST

I'm looking for a new laptop on a pretty tight budget. Requirements for the laptop are: run minecraft decently (right now i get around 100 fps). Possibly run GTA V but that's not as important, whereas minecraft is a must. And just generally not be incredibly slow. The laptop i currently have is an Asus X411UA with intel core i5-8250U, but i need a new one because its broken. My current laptop is pretty good but i would like something slightly better/faster.

I don't really know what to look for in laptops so here are 2 that i found, are any of these good for what i want? If not, do you have any recommendations? (my budget is £300-£400, possibly up to £500)

    Hello everyone!

I'm not very tech savvy so I need your personal opinions please. I'm starting my own podcast/live streaming and video editing desk setup in 2021. I'm looking to find what processor/computer AND SPECS** I should use for my equipment (no gaming). I was looking into the MacBook Pro 16 but I've heard horror stories (burning out) of previous generations of MacBooks. However I really like the idea of portability of the MacBook. I've also considered building a PC but I prefer a MacBook unless you guys suggest otherwise. thanks I'm advance!!

Looking at this ASUS right now with the Core i7-10th gen. Will primarily use it for content creation in Premiere and light Photoshop. I have been hearing that the 4000 series from AMD trumps whatever Intel has to offer, so should I find a different laptop that has Ryzen? Any other recomendations below $1000 CAD is appreciated!
