    Out of these...

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 03:06 AM PST

So I've been looking for cheap laptops firsthand, and have found these for a good price (sub £200). What should I get out of these and why?

    ASUS E203 (11"), ASUS E406 (14"), Lenovo IdeaPad 1 Athlon Silver (11" or 14"), Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 1 AMD A4 (11"),

Just for the record, I like small (11") laptops. EDIT - For some reason it got rid of where I put enter (inbetween each laptop)?

Laptop manufacturer with best tech support plan?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 06:18 PM PST

A friend in the US is trying to start a business and needs a laptop that will allow them to do video conferencing with clients all day.

The biggest concern is tech support if something happens. Which company offers the best small business support (mostly phone support, but also sending out a tech for replacing parts, etc.)?

The big caveat is they need to be on Windows for their software to work, so an Apple Laptop wouldn't work for them.

    Thx!

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
    • N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Is HP Omen 2020 good enough for Graphic Design or Color sensitive work?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 09:03 PM PST

I am buying the omen today ( i7, gtx 1650ti), my friend has it and he can only praise it. Works well with games, looks good, good thermals etc. I wanted to know about the display. All he does is watch movies so it doesn't matter much the eye gets used to it.

I am a design student in college and even tho I need good power I also need decent screen to work with colors and I am seeing different sRGB and Adobe RGB ratings on different websites so I don't know which one is accurate. I will be doing A LOT of photo editing, graphic work and some video editing. I cannot use an external monitor as well because I will be living in a hostel. I don't rally care about high hertz panel because most screens even today are 60.

$300-600, United States. a replacement for a basic laptop from 2015

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 08:09 PM PST

    Hey. Me again.

So, long story short, the Gateway Creator Series is going back.

I wasn't happy with it for a variety of reasons, but I also don't think I'm cut out for PC gaming anyways. I don't understand computers well enough to troubleshoot on a PC and get the games running as optimized as possible.

The plan now is when I have the money for it, I'll just get a PS4 and figure out how to calibrate the settings on the TV in my room for it.

This way, I can focus on replacing my old laptop and just not worry about gaming until I have the finances for it.

The laptop I've been using since 2015 is, if I read the product info on the back correctly (it's a little warped), HP 15-r264dx TouchSmart Notebook PC. 2.1GHz 5th generation Intel Core i3-5010U, 6GB DDR3L SDRAM (2 DIMM).

    I'll do the questionnaire now.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $300-600, United States.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I just want to download lots of stuff, watch videos, watch stuff on youtube or twitch, just...basic stuff. I don't need anything nuts.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not at all.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Honestly I'd want to get Windows Movie Maker back. I do not plan on doing any gaming on the laptop.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I'd like a nice keyboard and mouse touch thingie. My old laptop's is really nice, even after all these years. I'd really like for the thing to play DVDs or maybe even blu-rays, but if that's gonna be super hard to find or make the price way higher, I'm not interested.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I just need a functional basic laptop and I don't care about gaming anymore. I'll just get a PS4 someday.

Thank you all for all your help. Sorry I've been such a mess about this.

I have been going between the Tiger Lake Xps 13 and the Zenbook 14 UX425EA. The Acer Swift 5 was also in consideration, but their reputation as a brand seems to be quite poor.

Can I get an HDMI splitter(or something similar) that can show 2 different things on 2 different displays?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 10:45 PM PST

I have a laptop that has 1 HDMI port, and I usually connect it to the monitor at my desk. I'm getting a new monitor tomorrow, and I wanted to know if I could use all 3 of the displays at the same time? My first idea was an HDMI splitter, but I couldn't find one that displayed 2 different things at the same time. Is there another option to accomplish this, or is it just not possible? P.S. I'm posting this here even though I'm not asking for a laptop suggestion because I don't know where else I would be able to. I figured that I might as well post it to a sub that's dedicated to laptops. However, if I should post this somewhere else please tell me where. Thanks in advance!

Best Budget Laptop for AutoCAD and Light Gaming? (Canada)

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 09:56 PM PST

    Hey, everyone.

My current laptop (Asus Q550LF) is literally being held together by duct tape while struggling to support the screen with only one unbroken hinge. I desperately need a new laptop, especially since I just got into an engineering-HVAC program that deals with a lot of AutoCAD.

I don't need a top-of-the-line laptop. I would basically love to get something that performs just as well as my Asus used to, without having it be an Asus.

A little about my current, dingy laptop:

    -Bought it in 2014
    -Nvidia Geforce 745M
    -1TB of space
    -Intel Core i7-8GB RAM

-The laptop was never put out as a "gaming" laptop, but it performed so damn well for it's time. It was FAST, graphics were smooth, and it could take a beating.

I don't necessary want a gaming laptop. My Asus is actually a notebook, and it was never marketed for gaming, but it ended up being pretty good in that domain--so maybe there's something out there that I'm not finding that works exactly the same?

I use a lot of software in my day-to-day life, both for hobby and school: a bunch of Adobe, Autodesk, and light gaming (Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, etc.).

The Asus I bought came out to about $1000, so I'd love to find something that doesn't exceed that price range. My preferred budget is max $700-800.

*Getting a desktop is not currently an option due to my living situation

    *I live in Canada.
    *Refurb/used not an option
    *I don't care about thinness/weight

Looking for Help for a Friend: Trying to Find a Laptop Under 2k, 17" Capable of VR

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 05:51 PM PST

I know desktops are much preferred in the VR space, but my friend is insistent on a laptop for multiple reasons.

She just got an Oculus Quest 2 for Christmas and is looking for a laptop that can handle VR. She wants an 17" display and says as long as it has an HDMI out and can handle her headset, she's fine. Need to keep it under 2,000 however, which I know is tight. Any recommendations are appreciated.

EDIT: Sorry, this is in the US.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Budget: $2,000 USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Would prefer only one power brick
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Anything is fine.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      17"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      VR Gaming
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Phasmophobia, highest settings, at least 60FPS
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 05:28 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    • 3000DKK, Denmark

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    -Yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

-Battery life is not very important. Build quality + performance has higher priority.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    -not important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    -preferably around 15" or higher.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

-Would like to be able to run a browsergame(Foundry VTT) along with videochat on discord with no problems.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

-not sure Foundry has FPS/not sure its an issue as its a browser game.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

-Would prefer a lap top with build in microphone and webcam-

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

    • Bought an Acer Chromebook 315 17", as I thought it would be good enough for the minimal requirements for a browsergame(Foundry VTT) combined with discord videochat. The chromebook gets destroyed by lag as soon as the videochat is running though, so it obviously doesn't meet the requirements.
    • I know very little about computers, but if "more" is required from a laptop if you plan to connect a 2nd screen to it other than the one its born with - that's something that has to be taken into consideration also.

All the best! (and welcome to 2021) :)

Help me find a new laptop for work!

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 08:53 PM PST

    Hi guys!

This is my first post here. Like everybody here (I assume), I just want a bang for my buck! It will be primarily for work so I want it to look nice and be lightweight so I can easily take it from place to place. My budget is around $1200 but I can go a little above that if necessary. Performance is a big factor for me. As I said, it will be only for work use, so I just want it to be as fast as possible for my given budget. It's not for gaming, so I don't have a preference in regards to GPU or anything like that. A lot of what I will be working with will be documents and things of that nature. A fast boot time and being able to open applications fast is important to me. Something I would really like would be a numberpad, but it is simply just a luxury to me and not a necessity.

    To recap:

    - $1200 budget (I can go above that but my $1200 is my preference)

    - Must be lightweight

    - Must be fast and have reliable performance

    - A numberpad would be awesome!

To whoever responds to this, thank you for your time and having my best interest at heart!

Mainly looking for something small and cheap (doesn't need to run games just run what i mentioned: Netflix, YouTube, Twitter, Reddit) and my budget is $800 but I would like something cheap unless the cheap stuff just sucks, but I feel it would get the job done.

is this laptop better than my current one?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 08:44 PM PST

My current laptop is an Asus X411UA, 8GB RAM, Intel core i5-8250U. This laptop is the one i'm thinking of buying. But, i want to make sure it's better and faster at light gaming (minecraft), streaming movies and in general just faster and smoother. Thank you in advance!

Looking for a laptop with gaming and digital art capabilities under $1200 US

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 03:46 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Ideally looking for a laptop $1k USD or under but realistically I know I might need to go a little over budget, but I'd like to keep it around $1200 max.

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

I have no experience using refurbs, but if anyone's had good experiences I might be open to getting one.

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I would like something with good performance and battery life.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not important.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      14"+

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I would like to be able to run Adobe programs (mostly Photoshop and Lightroom) smoothly and quickly, as well as being able to play games without lag.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'd like to be able to run games like Skyrim and Fallout: New Vegas without lag or long load times. 60 FPS would probably be ideal, but I'm not against sacrificing FPS to stay within budget.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I write a lot so I need a laptop that has a comfortable and reliable keyboard, and at least 2 USB ports.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I would like a laptop with at least 16GB RAM, over 500GB SSD, and a decent graphics card.

I was looking at the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14, as it is $1,250 at Best Buy right now, but if there are cheaper options I would really appreciate recommendations.

    I have a budget of 340 bucks.

I want a laptop, that can handle light gaming, like roblox, and websites like twitter, reddit, and quora. I also want a very basic non fancy showey thing, as that stuff takes up the price, and leaves out the performance. I just want the most basic laptop, even if its 100% plastic. I just litterly want performance. nothing else. What laptop should i purchase?

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Max 1000USD, would prefer closer to 800USD

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      Yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality: not a major priority (I don't think?) Performance: would like to use this computer mostly for gaming, so I think processor, graphics card and RAM are most important. Battery life: not a priority. I'll be close to an outlet most of the time.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important. Will rarely travel with this computer.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      N/A, but bigger is better.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

As mentioned, gaming is the main thing I plan on using this computer for. Would also like something that can handle simple word processing/excel and internet access.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Not entirely sure, haven't played a lot of newer games, but am interested in games in a similar style to Baldur's Gate, starcraft (not necessarily internet play) and other story-driven games. As for settings and FPS, I don't know what i would need to give an meaningful answer.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

      No real preferences.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I've heard that games can be a big storage hog, so would be willing to use an external if that would be helpful for improving other specs. TIA for helping me get pointed in the right direction. As you probably gather from my answers, I don't really know what I need (or don't). Last computer was a chromebook, so really looking forward to upgrading to a real computer!

    Digital Art 700-800$ USA

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 01:46 PM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Something between 600-800$, in the USA.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, honestly a deal is a steal as long as it does what I need it to do.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Something with relatively good battery life, I wont be moving it around anywhere so it can stay plugged it. Never used a two and one, and I already use a plug in XP-Pen tablet.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Weight doesn't matter too much to me as I won't be carrying it around.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I'm not sure, my current laptop is 15.6 inches which is fine.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Lot's of photo editing and art done on Photoshop CC
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      No Gaming
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Touch-screen would be useful, but I'm looking for affordable and reliable.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I'm trying not to break the bank but I'm open to all suggestions.
