Looking for a decent laptop in Canada for schoolwork and gaming, around $1100 CAD budget

    Total budget:

    $1100 CAD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    Preferably not

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I'm a student finishing up school and will transition to using it for some gaming

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not too important, as long as it fits in my large backpack

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

For schoolwork (Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and gaming (League of Legends, Valorant, Call of Duty Warzone, etc.)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

As long as I can get around 60fps, settings not as important

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

*SSD maybe, as long as overall performance is good *

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    Country: USA ; Budget: $1000

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I have a slight disdain for 2-in-1s but anything that runs without running jet engines as fans and has a decent amount of battery is okay with me.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not super important

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    Preferably 15" to 17"

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I play super casual games, usually the likes of Minecraft, visual novels, or indie RPGs.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Minecraft is pretty much the only game I consistently play, usually with Optifine loaded. Getting at least 60fps would be preferable

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

A backlit keyboard, decent webcam, USB-A ports, thunderbolt or HDMI port, 16 gb of ram, 512gb SSD, at least a 1080p screen.

Thank you for any help or suggestions! I've been using MacBooks for most of my life but wanted to try something different this time. I really appreciate you reading this

      • N/A, if it can handle CSGO it's a bonus
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • Thunderbolt preferred
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Currently looking for a good 2 in 1 to use with a stylus, was looking into the XPS series but it's extremely overpriced where I live for whatever reason.

Considering the Inspiron series, and was wondering if there are any known problems (e.g. hinge reliability, stylus response, etc.) before I go for it.

If there are any other 2 in 1s you'd suggest over it within the same price range I'd love to hear.

    Thanks a lot!

Looking for a Laptop for Architecture school $2,000 USD or under

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 04:17 AM PST

I've just started my first year in architecture school (very excited for it) and I'm looking to buy a good laptop that will be able to handle running multiple heavy programs at the same time. Running things such as Rhino 3D, AutoCAD, V-Ray/Lumion, and other modeling and rendering programs at the same time as having photoshop/Indesign open while being on a zoom call. The professor recommended a good gaming laptop with really good graphics card and lots of memory. Can anyone recommend a laptop that would be capable of all this and something people know will last? Will be in school with it for 4-5 years so hoping it will last most of my schooling. Thanks!

      • *Budget 500$ - 1100$ USA
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?*
      • *Not really, unless it's guaranteed to last five years
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?*
      • *Prioritize good battery life, keyboard, trackpad, and screen quality. Performance good enough for school and office work (I like having a lot of tabs open.) Can't run crazy loud.
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?*
      • *Doesn't need to be ultra-thin and light but I don't want a clunky "gamer-Esque" body. Fan of the razer blade, xps15, and MacBook's chassis but these are obviously out of my budget.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • -I want a really good keyboard and display (think the new xps15)

Looking for laptop less than $2400 to replace my macbook pro 16". I have i7, 16RAM, 4GB Radeon. Want to get linux/windows notebook with more powerful specs (at least ram and video memory) than they are now.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 02:53 AM PST

I realized that I also like to play games, not only develop stuff on my laptop.

Unfortunately, macbook even with bootcamp does not provide much power to run games smoothly. And I understand that there are many notebooks in the wild with like 8GB video memory and even 144hz refresh rate that are way cheaper than my macbook.

There is one concern for me - developing iOS apps, but this is easily solved by online rent-a-mac services or other more shady options, which I won't write here of course.

I spent last 2 months in bootcamp (basically separate partition with windows 10) and realized that windows 10 interface and feel pleazing me more than macos. And even if I feel nostalgic I will definetely have half partition used by some linux distro, since I'm not only apps developer but backend too.

edit: I'm in Russia so basically we have most of the models here, I just need their names/options, not like amazon links etc

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      <=$2400
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      probably not
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Better smallish notebook like razer but I can live with other options.
      • I would like of course decent battery life when not gaming (I would game only in closed lid mode or with charger connected). Like 3-4 hours stable developing using Visual Studio, browser, Unity
      • I think build quality can be low, but as a trade-off for specs.
      • I don't care about sound quality since I often watch movies on apple tv/ps4 etc.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Somewhat important, not looking for a 3kg monster. I rarely walk to the office (due to the new work-from-home nature of our world), but when traveling very fat and very heavy laptops can be a problem.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      >=15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      Unity, Visual Studio
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Subnautica, Natural Selection 2, Apex Legends, Euro Truck Simulators, Train Simulators etc
      • Of course looking for 60+ fps stable. I have cooler pad which allows 60 FPS on my macbook now, because it's coolers are not enough sometimes and macbook drops power of videocard/cpu to cool down a little.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Good keyboard will be nice but not obligatory, I mostly use laptop with closed lid and mechanical keyboard. So basically I already have keyboard of my dreams.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I understand that I won't get macbook clone (ergonomics, weight, thinness etc) with better specs, so I am ready for tradeoffs. Just don't want total monsters with coolers on the back with the size of 3 fingers stacked, which would require their cart for traveling.
      • I don't want CD-ROM etc. Thunderbolt chargers and usb-c ports would be nice though, as I have many usb-c hubs for macbook.

Seeking the best Personal Computer for a Student under $700

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 02:40 AM PST

Hi everyone! I am a college student looking to replace my Lenovo Yoga 730- 13ikb. While it is a great laptop for the price, and has very few issues, the issues it does have are too annoying. The build quality is great for about 6 months and then the keyboard began to fail on me. This is my second Yoga 730 so I am beginning my search for a new laptop. Currently looking on eBay. Ideally under $600 but if there is a good value deal at $700 I am very open to it. Also I'd like it to have at least 5 hours of moderate battery use but not an absolute necessity. I do not intend to game too much on my new laptop but if it can run high-res games at a decent frame rate I would be very happy. Thanks in advance!

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    $700 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    yes

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Priority in order; performance, closely followed by build quality, battery life, form factor

How important is weight and thinness to you?

somewhat important, ideally in the 2-4lb weight range but im open to almost any weight

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

preferred size is 15 inches but 13 is acceptable

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I would like to be able to run adobe premiere pro and do some light editing. no 4k videos or anything too intense but just basic editing. Some steam gaming as well but nothing that requires too much power, maybe some Minecraft but if it could run nba 2k21 at 60fps I would be extremely happy

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I do not require these games to be played but if I could play Apex, Fortnite, or DarkSouls at somewhere even between 30-60fps I would be pretty satisfied

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I really value a good clicky keyboard, my Lenovo has a pretty nice keyboard, but I just hate a keyboard that has low profile keys like the new macbooks. If it includes a Disc drive I would see that as a plus, but if that compromises the machine and makes it too heavy/thick I would not prefer it.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Please include a laptop that has multiple usb slots lol. It might be an overlooked thing but 2 input slots for usbs are very important haha. Thank you all again!

    Gaming Laptop Help

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 10:28 PM PST

Looking for a decent laptop in USA for gaming and some editing, around $1200 USD budget

    Total budget:

    $1200 USD

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

If it's a good deal on a well reviewed laptop

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

This is for almost exclusively gaming while traveling. I will also do some video editing on the side for fun. I will have it plugged in for gaming and editing so battery life isn't essential.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not important at all, I am traveling by car and have plenty of space

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    15.6 or 17.3

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Gaming (Borderlands 1/2/3, World of Warships, EVE, Destiny 2, Assassins Creed O/V) and some video editing (I don't use CPU/Ram intensive software for the most part)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

BL 3 at max settings ideally 60fps+ also World of Warships at max for 1080p 75fps idally

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I *need* per key RGB because I use it to identify keys while editing/gaming because I have no sense of touch in my finger tips. Also a mechanical keyboard helps as well because I can feel it hit the switch through my finger instead of my finger tips. I have no need for touch screen finger-print reader or anything else really as long a build quality is decent.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Is the ASUS TUF FX505DT Still viable in 2021?

In my country, gaming laptops are pretty expensive, so I was wondering if this laptop is still good right now, as the processor and gpu is a bit outdated, thanks.

Looking for Laptop, buying in US. $700 budget.

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 07:31 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $500-$700USD
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
In order: 1) Performance (I hate waiting for things to open), 2) Battery Life (5+ hours on average settings), 3) Build Quality. 2-in-1 sounds interesting, but I can do without it.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Medium. I don't want something really heavy or unwieldy, I just need to be able sit comfortably on a couch with it sometimes.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
I'm used to laptops around 14-16", but I'll consider models that are slightly larger or smaller.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
I plan to use this for things like Photoshop, Autodesk Sketchbook, Godot/Game Maker, and some video editing. I want to be able to have a few different apps open at once sometimes (as in Google Docs, Godot, and youtube for example.) Gaming capability would be nice, but I can sacrifice some of that to stay within budget if I need to.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I'm pretty new to PC gaming so I'm not totally sure what kind of FPS to specify. I guess I'm willing to play on "low" settings, whatever that means? As long as the game isn't annoyingly choppy when it runs. As for actual games I'm interested in, probably things like Raft or The Forest. If it could run 2D games well, that'd be enough, since I'm interested in 2D game development.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Reliable build quality and keyboard mostly. I don't care about touch screens, optical drives, or fingerprint readers. Weird as it might sound, I never find myself using any CDs or DVDs on my laptops.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      - In case it helps, I've had a lot of good experiences with Lenovo Thinkpads (such as T470 and P1) that I've used for work (I know those tend to be more expensive than the price range I mentioned, but I thought it could be helpful info). They seem to have good batteries, keyboard/inputs, and good multitasking.
      - I struggle to trust Lenovo Ideapads after a crappy 320-15 I bought a few years ago. It was pathetically slow from day one, and it remained that way no matter how much I tried to fix it. BIOS update, RAM/SSD upgrade, you name it. The keyboard and fused touchpad/mouse buttons annoyed me too.
      - I'd like to use a docking station to connect the laptop to two extra monitors in my office (both Dell P2419H 24" monitors). Probably one those "brick"(?) docking stations, not the kind that have to connect to the bottom of the laptop. However, I can do without this if it means meeting more of my criteria within my price range.

Budget: $2k. USA. Replace desktop for laptop to run mainly Adobe Creative Cloud

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 06:19 AM PST

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$2,000 (but willing to go higher if the laptop will last me a long time)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

    yes

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

I care most about whether it can handle Adobe creative suite without lagging out crashing. Also, good screen quality. Battery life isnt that important, but would want it to run for at least 4-5 hours. Having a lot of storage space is needed to run my programs.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Not important

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Preferably 15in or more, but not a deal breaker.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I mainly use Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effects, XD. I dabble in video editing and 3D modeling (Blender) for fun.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    I don't play games

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

It could be nice to have it touch screen, but not important. Reliable build quality sounds necessary.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have a desktop computer to do my work on, but I've been traveling more for work, so I want to downsize to a laptop.

Notebook/Tablet/2-in-1 for Android Studio, Adobe Creative Cloud, Productivity? Windows or Mac? - 15"+, USA, ~$1000

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 12:31 AM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Preferably below $1000USD, but there is wiggle room.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Ultrabook-esque for sure. Something that is thin, comfortable for casual use in bed or on the couch, very lap-friendly. Minimal overheating concerns. At least 5 hour battery with moderate use would be great. Performance is important, it would be a productivity device. I'm very open to a tablet or 2-in-1 factor.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

As lightweight and thin as possible is important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15" is probably the sweet spot here, but it's not a firm parameter. I'm open to smaller or larger.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Programming (primarily Android Studio) Photoshop, Lightroom, Illustrator Maybe some 3D modeling, but not a priority. Civ 6 is likely the most intensive game I'd want to run. No video editing.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Preferably 120hz+, especially if there is pen input.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Touchscreen with decent pen support for notetaking and/or art would be a major plus. Fingerprint readers are also nice. These aren't hard requirements though.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Overall looking for a well-rounded, high quality device that should have a reasonable longevity. I want it to contrast my gaming laptop in terms of portability and thermals, and contrast my iPad in terms of desktop capability for programs such as Android Studio.

I'm pretty loyal to(/more comfortable with) Windows, but in typing this post I wonder if a MacBook would be a good device? Otherwise I was thinking XPS or Surface - but XPS might be overkill and I'm not sold on the Surface tabs.

Budget isn't firm. I realize a lot of what I ask can get above that $1k pretty quick, and I'm curious to see all recommendations.

    Thanks!

Looking for a laptop for art and some gaming

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 08:41 PM PST

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Buying in Indonesia, anything under Rp40,000,000
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Mostly performance, I'd like to draw in Clip Studio without lag. Also need a decent battery life.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      Preferrably lighter
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      14" or 15"
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Clip Studio Paint, and VRoid Studio.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Mainly Genshin Impact at medium settings and 60fps, and also Minecraft and some 2D games. For school work, I only need to use LibreOffice.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'm more concerned about doing digital art, so it needs a good color gamut (and higher adobe rgb pls). Webcam is required. No touchscreen, as I already have a display tablet to connect to it.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I've seen many good opinions on the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, and it looks very good, but the only thing making me hesitate is it not having a webcam, because it's required for me in online classes. Been eyeing the Dell XPS 15 too, and it seems good for my drawing needs but it seems like its GPU isn't the best for a game like Genshin.

I'm not very knowledgeable with specs, so I'm sorry if anything isn't clear enough or if my english is bad. Thanks in advance!

    Legion Y7000 for $400?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 04:47 PM PST

Hello! I hope someone can give me advice.

I usually have good luck on local ads like marketplace and Craigslist, so I recently came across a Craigslist sale ad for a Lenovo Legion Y7000 in my local area. The specs are as followed:

    OS: Windows 10 Home CPU: Intel Core i7-9750H (capable of turbo-boosting) GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 RAM: 16GB (2x 8192MB) - DDR4, 2666MHz STORAGE: 1000GB HDD + 100GB SSD

They says it's about a year old, nothing is wrong with it and are selling it for $400 since they upgraded to a desktop. The only catch is the device was originally purchased in another country, and they use a converter to use it in the United States, which they will give me with the charger. It's in another language too but that doesn't bother me as I can do a clean install of Windows 10. It's just the price and the fact it's from another country that has me skeptical. I texted them and they were good to meet up, so it's not as if it is a scam( I hope). I figure majority of computers are from made out of the country anyhow so I'm just stumped on how to proceed, if this is even a good price or if I could find a better priced laptop out there. It's for my sister who wants to start gaming and may be used for video editing. What would you guys recommend to do? If you were in my shoes.
