Posted: 31 Dec 2020 03:04 PM PST I've been on Windows as long as any of you; 3.1 was the shit. I've been on Apple and various Unixes and Linuxes just as long. For the unaware, migrating as an example your Macbooks is as simple as tethering them, hitting 'go', and the next day the 'you' in the older, slower laptop has been cloned whole into the new laptop, down to the application and settings levels. You basically copy yourself into a new OS and hardware container. I know Windows is a much bigger ecosystem, the foundational underlying differences, and all... but while I know things like the Linux subsystems and kernel and so on well, I don't pretend to even slightly know the Windows side as well. I've never professionally worked Windows but as the sometimes side thing, or for my work laptops, but I live generally in the nix world. What's stopping the rocket scientists on the Windows side from making such a clone migration as stupidly easy? Surely it's got to be possible by now? I'm just settling into the thought of migrating a Windows work machine for the first time in probably 15+ years; I'd been on Linux and Mac laptops for that long, until the last three years back on a Windows laptop. I'm already resigned to having to side-by-side the machines for some time as I find and reinstall anything I use application-wise, cloning various values that I fine tuned... making sure my cheese is in the right place... ...and lusting for just jamming two Macbooks together at bedtime, pressing go, and waking up to a finished migration.... Windows 10 performance compared to Win 7 Posted: 31 Dec 2020 02:26 PM PST People with weaker computers, how does windows 10 run? I am currently on Windows 7, and i want to upgrade since everything is out of date, and some files are acting weirdly. (Is windows 10 more slow on an hdd and a low tier system when compared to win 7?) Thanks for any help in advance, and have a happy new year! :) [link] [comments]
My microphone volume on windows is very very low Posted: 31 Dec 2020 07:03 PM PST I have this problem for a few weeks now. One day a friend in discord told me I'm really quiet. I looked up for my settings and saw that everywhere my mic volume is on 100%. I tried using some equalizer to adjust my volume but this mic is so quiet it distorts when I want an reasonable loudness. I tried reinstalling some driver. Tried using another microphone but they were quiet too. On my other pc this is working just fine. I also tried reinstalling some drivers but it also didn't worked. Posted: 31 Dec 2020 12:38 AM PST Hello. I'm trying to let updates run and nothing is working thanks to 0x8000ffff errors: https://i.imgur.com/l6zObE1.png and https://i.imgur.com/P7wMIm1.png I did replace my motherboard a few weeks ago due to the previous one dying. All the latest drivers for it have been installed. Side note: since installing the new motherboard I've been getting this "blocked for your protection" crap when I right-click "This PC" and select "Manage" https://i.imgur.com/AtmXLyg.png I'm at my wits end with this crap. Why can't they just specify EXACTLY what is wrong and how to fix it...? Windows 10 Home version 2004 [link] [comments]
Are there any bat to exe converts that do not make exe show as threat? Posted: 31 Dec 2020 04:49 PM PST Hey, I'd like to convert a bat to exe. Everytime I do so it comes up showing as a virus on windows defender. I am using bat to exe. Are there any programs that will create .exe files out of bats that do not show up as a virus? I wrote the script there is 100% no threat. Windows 10 [link] [comments]
Enabling Virtualization without entering BIOS? Posted: 31 Dec 2020 08:25 PM PST I have a Gigabyte B450M DS3H Micro ATX AM4 MB and a AMD Ryzen 3 2200G and I am trying to enable Virtualization but for some reason it seems whenever I try to boot to UEFI firmware settings, a black screen appears and goes nowhere. When I restart my PC, the option to enter BIOS does not even show up either. Is there another way to enable Virtualization? I am working on a Flutter project and it's getting a little annoying having to plug in my Android phone each time I want to test something out. Thanks [link] [comments]
Driver issue after upgrading to windows 10 Posted: 31 Dec 2020 08:22 PM PST I recently upgraded from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 10 Pro on my laptop, I noticed that Lunar Client has stopped working, the launcher itself contiues to work but the game will not open. I decided to try using the normal Minecraft launcher but I kept getting Open GL Errors and very long lag spikes. I suppose it could be because of my graphics driver but, when I tried updating it on Windows device manager it always tells me that it is up to date, I tried using Driver Easy but that ran into the same issue. When I downgraded back to Windows 7, Lunar Client works fine but I don't to downgrade again because of the features of Windows 10. I've tried to update the drivers using Windows Update but that hasn't helped. I haven't tried reinstalling the graphics driver since I couldn't find a download from online and if I fail to install the graphics driver I can only use the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. Device Name: Toshiba Satellite C855-S5350 Here are my specs: Current OS: Windows 10 Pro 64 Bit v20H2 Graphics: Intel HD Graphics Graphics Driver Version: 9.17.10.4459 CPU: Intel Pentium B980 (2 Cores, 2.40 GHz) RAM: 6 GB [link] [comments]

Reinstalling Windows to a different drive Posted: 31 Dec 2020 02:19 PM PST A friend's PC needs a reinstall to get rid of all of old Alienware rubbish, but I have a quick question before I agree to do it: - The current windows copy is installed on his old HDD, we're planning to reinstall it on an SSD for obvious reasons, I'm well aware this formats the drive but will be installing it do a new drive. Does mean he has to buy a new copy of Windows? [link] [comments]
Help, loss internet connection Windows 7 Posted: 31 Dec 2020 05:59 PM PST My pc BSOD during the process to create a bootable usb drive for Win10. Before I started the process, I had to free up space on my C drive. I used disk cleanup on that and rebooted. During the reboot, it looked like Windows made a major update. Everything seemed fine until I started creating the bootable drive and I was hit with the BSOD. Now I am getting unidentified network. In the device manager, I believe my adapter is showing. Any help would be appreciated. My plan was to dual boot 7 and 10. I want to put 10 on my new SSD. This should not have been complicated but somehow it has become that way. [link] [comments]
Can't install Windows 10 on my newly built PC Posted: 31 Dec 2020 09:42 AM PST So here's my situation. I have just recently finished building my new gaming PC, and I've set up a bootable USB to install Windows on. However, I have come to a problem during installation. When I am told to chose what drive I will be installing Windows on, no drives show up. A little bit of research later, and I think I have found the problem. I think that I might need some storage controller drivers for my B550 chipset, but I can't find the right drivers that work. Is it possible that anyone could help me? Thanks in advance. Heaphone issues after resetting laptop (windows 10) Posted: 31 Dec 2020 03:52 PM PST Okay so recently I reset my laptop (its an inspiron 13-5378) because I had too much unnecessary files. But now whenever I plug in my headphones, the sound still comes from the laptop speakers. I have to restart my laptop with the headphones plugged in for it to work. But even after that, the sound quality is bad, it feels.. off. But it works just fine on other devices. If anyone can help that'd be great [link] [comments]

How to permanently kill microsoft family features? Posted: 31 Dec 2020 11:11 AM PST I recently started getting the "Sign in so you don't miss out" popup from microsoft family features out of nowhere. I've looked up similar cases on forums and followed the advice to remove myself from the microsoft family. I did it, but the problem persists, in fact it may've gotten even more frequent. Is there some way I can just permanently stop this thing from running? [link] [comments]

My product key sticker is damaged Posted: 31 Dec 2020 01:28 PM PST Hello, I just purchased an HP Touchsmart all in 1 PC from a thrift store and I wanted to replace the hard drive but I don't have restore media for the system. I tried the HP recovery software to create a new set of restore media but they only allow 1 copy to be made and it appears the original owner must have already done this. I was going to just reinstall using a retail Windows image but the last group of characters on the product key sticker is liquid damaged and unreadable. Is there any way to recover the product key so I can install Windows on a new drive? [link] [comments]
