Design Student + Gamer in the market for a gaming laptop Posted: 03 Dec 2020 12:41 AM PST LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
15,000 HKD to 20,000 HKD (Hong Kong Dollars) ~ $2000 to $2700 . I'm having a friend buy it from Hong Kong since tech imports are ridiculously expensive where i live ( India ) .
Nope, this is my first laptop in 10 years , I'm going to college ( design school ) and I'm upgrading from a 10 year old, cheap-ass notebook ,so brand new all the way .
In order of priority -
not too important. I can heft a thicc boi easily , thin is fine too ( but not at cost of thermals )
Well I'm not a super nitpicky typist, so keyboards aren't a super big deal . Don't need a touch screen , but i DO want good color accuracy with a high refresh rate (144hz) .
I just want a powerful machine that'll last me years, will have some future proofing , and have somewhat decent battery life so I'm not the guy with the chonking laptop who runs out of charge mid lecture ( just in case my college doesn't have a ton of outlets ) .

Lightest laptop that supports 64GB of RAM? Posted: 03 Dec 2020 04:02 AM PST I travel a lot so want something light weight (ideally around 1kg), but I need a lot of memory for working with large data sets in memory. My only other requirement are a 12-16" matte screen and can't be Apple (I will be installing Linux). The budget is flexible, but under $2,000 would be good. [link] [comments] |
Keep by X1 Carbon gen 3 i7 or upgrade to M1 MacBook Air / Pro? Posted: 03 Dec 2020 03:27 AM PST Hi everyone, I'll be moving to Japan for work where I'll be doing a job that requires me to move around every now and again. I currently own a decent desktop and a thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 3 i7. With my job I'll be based in Tokyo, then be working at other places for up to two weeks at a time, so I was thinking of leaving my desktop (i7-9700 RTX2060 16GB RAM) at my apartment, then just take my laptop for my business trips. With the advent of the M1 macs, it is quite tempting to get one, however, I'm not entirely sure if it's slashing out in what is effectively a secondary computer. On the one hand, I'll still be mostly stationed at home, with just short business trips, and I reckon I'll be quite busy during such things anyway so it seems redundant getting a nice laptop. It also means I can wait for the X1 carbon to die and get a 2nd or 3rd gen M1 in the future. On the other hand it would be nice to not fee "gimped" with a laptop with meh performance and screen. TLDR: I have a desktop but would like a laptop for travelling. Do I keep my X1 Carbon or get an M1 MacBook Air / Pro? Many thanks in advance [link] [comments] |

Tongfang laptop or Lenovo Legion 5 (ryzen 5) Posted: 02 Dec 2020 10:51 PM PST Hi guys. I'm quit torn on which one to get. My budget is about Php50k +- 5k. That's about 1000 USD to give you an idea. I'm a front end engineer trainee, and will become a junior dev this coming March. Even though I will be getting a work laptop (macbook pro) this coming march (company policy, I need to be a regular employee first). I will still need a personal one to use right now, and of course in the future. There's a brand here called "Ipason" that resells a Tongfang model through them. The model is the same with the Eluktronics MAG-15/XMG Fusion 15/Vapor 15. The Ipason brand sells it for roughly 1000 USD with the ff specs: -i7 9750h -GTX 1660ti -144hz 300 nit color accurate screen The thing is, I am skeptic. It's a chinese model, and it's really not known. So my brother suggested that I get the Lenovo Legion 5 instead with a similar price point and the ff spces: -ryzen 5 4600h -GTX 1650 -120hz 250 nit not so color accurate screen On paper, the Tongfang laptop beats the Legion 5 by a huge margin. I just need assurance that even though it's a brand that I have never heard of, it's still a Tongfang laptop. Because other resellers like Eluktronics sell it for about 1500 USD. That's a huge price difference. So should I trust the Tongfang model? Other people have bought it already, but they can't give out long term reviews yet coz they have only bought it about 2 months ago. But they say the laptop has been great for them so far. I also have a friend who personally bought the tongfang laptop. Any advice? Especially from devs and casual not-so-hardcore gamers out there. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. So this is a replacement to a 2012 MacBook Pro 16' that I've been nursing along for ages now. I'm considering just getting a new MacBook Pro 16' with all the highest options, but I'd like to get a higher end PC gaming laptop so I can play some PC games I've missed out on the Mac. I do some work and managing the household documents on this computer as well, but nothing very resource intensive. My key criteria is a gaming rig that I can use when I'm hanging out in bed with my wife in the evening that won't get too hot and has high end performance. Battery and looks frankly aren't a concern since I'm not lugging this one around. Reliability and durability are priorities. Cost really isn't a concern for me so I can go fairly high end here. Looking for a second laptop for light gaming Posted: 02 Dec 2020 06:58 PM PST Hi all, I used to use a Samsung Ativbook 5 for my main computer. It was a great laptop until the screen became pink. I dropped it off at a shop and um.. they are gone. the person who said he can fix it is active on Facebook but doesn't return any of my calls and is ghosting me. So I got a new laptop: a Macbook pro. And I hate it. I can't play any game, and I can't even plug in a USB without purchasing a part! I'm looking for a possible second laptop that I can play games on. I'm a light gamer and here is the list of games I play: -Call of Duty -Sims 4 -Roblox I'm not looking for an extremely good laptop, I'm a broke college student who just wants a little entertainment in her life. I saw a good deal on eBay for a 2017 Windowbook and I'm watching it but I don't know if it is actually good.. Can someone recommend me a laptop that I can use as a second light gaming laptop? Cheaper the better, I'm mostly looking at ebay.. Thank you! The FormLAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Looking for a Laptop for School and College Posted: 02 Dec 2020 05:42 PM PST Hey everyone! I'm a current high school student looking to purchase a new laptop within this month to replace my current laptop. I want something that can last the remaining semester for online school and for another four years when I go to college next year. If it matters, I'm planning on majoring in Computer Science, or something very related, like Data Science or Software Engineering, so there may be certain specs that I have to get for certain programs. Was thinking about either the G14 or the new M1 Macbooks, but I am open to other suggestions.

Is Intel i3 enough for office/college use? Is SSD non-negotiable? No gaming whatsoever Posted: 02 Dec 2020 08:02 PM PST Hi, guys! I'm thinking about buying a Lenovo Ideapad S145. The best deal out there has an Intel i3 (8th generation), 4GB RAM and 256 SSD (please let me know if other specs might be relevant). I intend to use it for homework and research (which means I usually open 15 tabs at a time), being mostly focused on MS Office. I don't play any games at all on Pc, but I like to watch movies and TV shows, usually with 720p or 1080p. The price of this first one is equivalent to USD 545.60. The alternative is the same Ideapad, but with an AMD Ryzen 5 3500-U, 8GB RAM and the same 256 SSD. The price of this second one is equivalent to USD 618.87 USD. There are both within my budget (thankfully), but I don't want to pay for capacity I'm not going to use. What do you guys think? Is the SSD as important as I've been told? Should I get the first one and expand the RAM? Thanks in advance! I'm thinking about expanding the [link] [comments] |
Found an Acer Swift 3 with 16gb ram and 500gb storage Posted: 02 Dec 2020 07:47 PM PST I've been digging through this sub for the past 2 weeks as I decide on a laptop, and I came to the conclusion that a reasonably priced acer swift 3 would be good for me. I want a professional business laptop, portable, reasonably priced (under $1,000 cad) and can game light to casual (minecraft, rocket league, civ 5). Anyways, based on everyone's suggestions I was leaning towards an acer swift 3. It seemed like everybody's biggest hangup on it was only 8gb ram and not expandable. I was randomly checking Walmart today and they had the acer swift 3 with 16gb ram for $250 off of normal price ($950 down from $1,200). I sprung for it immediately and it's now on its way to me. Weird thing is I can't find anybody talking about this laptop with 16gb of ram, and there are few to no reviews on this laptop. Does anybody have any experience with this model of laptop? Does it seem odd to anyone else? Follow up question: what can I expect from this computer for gaming. Website says this model has the AMD Ryzen. Good? Bad? I'm not too familiar with this stuff as I'm upgrading after 10 years from a 2010 MacBook pro. Thanks! Here is the link to the laptop btw: [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Dec 2020 07:35 PM PST I ordered an HP Spectre for just under $1300 on Black Friday (about $500 off original price) but I've been looking around and some website/video reviews I've seen are saying that the Envy can outperform the Spectre (I'm open to other suggestions as well)? I don't really care about the 2 in 1 capabilities of the Spectre, that was mostly just icing on the cake, the main criteria I need to meet are performance, build quality, staying at or under about $1300, and being portable (doesn't have to be the thinnest or lightest in the world but I don't want a huge heavy gaming laptop, also a 15 inch screen is preferable over a 13). Everything I know about computers I learned literally just hours before buying and any and all help/suggestions on if this is a good buy or not would be greatly appreciated!!! I ordered my Spectre with a 15" display, 10th generation i7-10750H processor (I wanted a 6 core instead of a 4 core because I heard more cores are better, right?), NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti with Max-Q design (4gb), 16 gigs of ram and 512 gigs of memory. I'm a student and need it for schoolwork but I'm also getting into video/photo editing, I don't do any gaming so that's not important to me. When I asked around at Best Buy the sales associate told me that the Spectre was the best laptop they had for video editing and the Spectre would be much better for video editing because the Envy doesn't have a discrete graphics card. I'm experiencing a bit of buyer's remorse because from what I've been reading online after buying is that I can get an Envy at a better price that can perform as well or even better than the Spectre I ordered. What I really want to know is: 1. Is this a good setup for video/photo editing? 2. For $1300 should I return it and get an Envy or another laptop with similar/better specs instead? I literally know nothing about computers so the more the merrier when it comes to any and all info you guys can help me out with. Thanks!!! Extra Credit: I've heard really mixed reviews about the Spectre and Envy screens, I got the 340 nit 4k IPS WLED, should i have spent $50 more for the 400 nit, or maybe $110 more for the AMOLED (kinda scared of going through screen burn in, and the battery life is supposed to be worse?) LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
About $1300 US
No, I want something new
Performance and battery life comes first but I definitely want something that'll be an investment that I can use for the next 5+ years, I want something portable but don't care about 2 in 1 or touchscreen, if it has it, great. If not, that's fine too
Fairly important, I need to be able to take it with me to school, work, travel etc. But it's not the end of the world if it's not the thinnest or lightest option out there.
15 inches preferred, but I would consider a 13 inch
Video/photo editing, honestly just getting in the game so I'm not sure what I will use but I want something that can run whatever I throw at it and I won't grow out of in a year or two, I don't do any gaming.
No Gaming
Reliable build quality is a must, I want to invest in something that I'll stick with for a while, a quality screen for video editing, a micro SD card would definitely be a plus, I need a discrete graphics card with a fast processor, and 16gb of ram, idk about anything else I might need for video editing but any suggestions or help at all on that front would be awesome! I'm not too picky about anything else
TLDR: Bought a Spectre for $1300 with 15" display, i7-10750H processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Ti with Max-Q design (4gb), 16 gigs of ram and 512 gigs of memory for school/video editing. Should I return it and get an Envy or some other laptop? [link] [comments] |
