Posted: 30 Dec 2020 04:32 PM PST Please help. This happens on every other boot-up. I have to choose which OS I'm running on startup (I only have Windows 10) and every other time I turn my computer on it micro-stutters all over the place. I have to turn it off (MANUALLY, because shutting it down from settings seems to just make the monitor black and my PC just stays on and ignores the shut down prompt). This only happened after windows auto-updated my PC right before Christmas. Specs:
Any info would be helpful, thank you!!! [link] [comments]

Everytime I restart my PC, every change is reverted Posted: 30 Dec 2020 06:59 PM PST Hey guys I really need some help. Everytime I restart/shut down my PC and turn it back on, everything I have done previously gets reverted. For example, if I uninstall several programs, restart my PC, all of those programs are back. It's almost like it keeps going back to a restore point for some reason. I've tried resetting my PC completely and wiping out my drives through Windows but once the PC restarts to do it, my PC is back to what it was before and acts like nothing happened. I can't seem to do anything, please help. [link] [comments]
WINDOWS 10: Issues with Explorer Access and System Auditing Posted: 30 Dec 2020 06:52 PM PST I've been having a few auditing and access-related issues with my PC. I have been unable to audit certain of my system registry folders. There is a "Drivers" folder under Local Machine that appears briefly when I first open the registry, then it quickly disappears. And, the folder does not appear again at any point until the PC is restarted. I am able to add an auditing group under the all the other folders under Local Machine, except for the "Hardware" folder. Whenever I open the registry, I find that the "Hardware" audit group has disappeared while all the others remain. I then discovered that I could use Process Monitor to audit the system registry. However, whenever I select "Enable Boot Logging", the program will often start up with the option unchecked and the bootlog never materializes. During the latest incident, I tried to enable boot-logging of the Process Monitor via the command line /EnableBootLogging. But, the command prompt returned that the command "procmon.exe" was not "recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file". After confirming via the Windows 32 folder that "procmon.exe" was listed in the system files, I tried again. This time the command prompt returned, "Access is denied." I attempted testing other programs that I was currently running in the command prompt, and found "access [was] denied" for other programs such as "firefox.exe" and even "explorer.exe". I was, however, able to run chrome.exe from the same command prompt (I was using an Administrator command prompt). After restarting the PC, "firefox.exe" and other programs are again able to run from the command prompt and task manager. But, I can still no longer access "explorer.exe" from the command line or from run; nor can I restart it via the task manager. When I attempt to run or restart "explorer.exe" from the task manager, I get the message: This app can't run on your PC. To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher." However, the OS does start up with explorer running, and I am able to click on and open the File Explorer folders, as well. I did try and browse around the System32 folder to see if any files or folders may have been changed or modified during this time. Most of the programs that were running in the task manager (including "System", "Registry", "explorer.exe", "firefox.exe", etc.) were shown to have been modified that day. There were also other sub-folders under System32 that had been modified (such as "Tasks", "config", "LogFiles", "SleepStudy", "Drivers", "sru", and more). Some files in those sub-folders strangely had modification times set ahead a few minutes into the future. Prior to my losing access to "explorer.exe" and other programs, I ran the following command lines: "procmon.exe /externalcapture", "c:\processmonitor" and "cd c:\processmonitor", in addition to "procmon.exe". These commands always returned either "[the program] is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file", or "The system cannot find the path specified". Until, that is, I opened and verified "procmon.exe" in the System32 folder using File Explorer. I then immediately got "Access is denied" when I ran the command, "procmon.exe". I did not change or alter the System32 folder during this time. I only opened it and verified "procmon.exe" was there. Finally, I discovered that I could enable a bootlog or run a diagnosis from the startup repair menu of the OS (just before Windows starts). However, the first time that I went to the startup options menu and attempted to read through all of the options, the PC shut completely down all on its own. It had some battery power and was plugged in; and due to all the issues I had not had it running long prior (it had already been shut down just minutes prior). Once I got back to the menu, I wasn't able to select an option as the screen went blank on its own then ran a diagnostic, I think. I am not sure what occurred, only that a message displayed in the upper-left corner of the screen indicating that a diagnostic failed(?) or could not run (?). I should have jotted down exactly what the message dsiplayed, but I was trying to get back to the startup menu options again. I finally got back to the startup menu, and this time I was able to select F2 for enable bootlogging. I had decided to forego the debugging option, F1; as it had already indicated failure (if the diagnostic that had failed was the debugging option, that is), and I was not sure that I would be able to get the screen to pause long enough to select an option a third time. I researched via Google, and was able to call up the bootlog using the "c:\Windows\ntbtlog.txt" command; but this appears to be dated back to 2018. Is it normal for the system to not have registered a bootlog since then? Are there any thoughts on what may be going on with my PC or OS, and how to resolve and prevent these issues moving forward? I would appreciate any advice, insight, and help. Thanks. [link] [comments]

PC randomly restarts even after Windows 10 reinstall. Posted: 30 Dec 2020 10:51 AM PST My PC was randomly restarting, so I disabled Automatic Restart which didn't fix the problem. I then updated my BIOS which resulted in a BSOD. After reinstalling Windows 10 to fix the BSOD (via a USB), it still restarts randomly though I've noticed it's usually when I start up a process (Opening MS Edge, clicking a link, pressing enter to confirm something etc.) Anyone know what the issue is? I thought it was due to my GPU or motherboard drivers, but wouldn't a fresh reinstall delete all drivers? [link] [comments]

Windows 10: Organizing Shortcuts by Type question? Posted: 30 Dec 2020 10:08 AM PST Going through my hard drive and creating a folder of shortcuts to documents and folders I visit most often. However, I'd really like for these items to be organized by original type of file. Documents, excel sheets, folders, etc. They're all in one group, organized by "Kind", which is close, but I'd like for all the shortcuts to be grouped by Type, then sorted by name. So far I went through the list of ways to Group things and couldn't find any single way to do this. "Kind" being the closest, but then it has a grouping for Links, which is a double of everything above it. Is there a way I can group all my shortcuts by the type of file it goes to? Posted: 30 Dec 2020 07:42 AM PST Hey everyone, I posted a support thread on the MS Windows Support Forum mid December about an issue I was having with my PC consistently blue-screening, but haven't had any responses, and it still occurs. Can anyone take a look and see if they're able to tell me any information about the crashes that might pinpoint the cause of the problem? Here is the link to the forum post, which contains detailed information about the BSOD and the DMP file: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/multiple-bsod-randomly-occurs-windows-10/e822872c-78f1-4612-96e3-bae335213fb0 [link] [comments] |
