MBP13 vs XPS13 for computer engineering.

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 05:52 PM PDT

Hello guys , I have been doing my research for a while between getting the i5/16gb/256ssd macbook pro or the similarly spec xps 13 for college, i am doing computer engineering and i am leaning more towards the macbook since its unix based but i am worried about some engineering classes. Which one do you guys think is better considering decent performance, screen. If there is anything that you think is a better option than both i would love to know about that too. Thank you.

    XPS 15 (9500) vs HP Envy 15 (2020) vs Razer Blade 15 Base (2020)

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 07:26 PM PDT

    Hi All,

I'm in the market for a new laptop and I've narrowed it down to the 3 below. Which would you suggest?

I will be using the laptop for basic home use, gaming, video watching, and will bring it with me on trips once COVID is over. The plan is to use it as a temporary desktop replacement and to keep it for the next couple of years and possibly do an eGPU setup down the road.

I am also indifferent about whether I can charge the laptop via Thunderbolt or not.

All are running on the i7-10750H with 16GB of DDR4-2933MHz and 512 M.2 PCIE NVMe SSD.

    XPS 15 (9500) ~$1500

    • NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1650 Ti 4GB GDDR6
    • 15.6" FHD+ (1920 x 1200) InfinityEdge Non-Touch Anti-Glare 500-Nit Display
    • Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650 (2x2) and Bluetooth 5.0
    • 2x Thunderbolt 3 (accepts charging)

    HP Envy 15 ~ $1500

    • NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2060 with Max-Q design (6 GB GDDR6 dedicated) (has Vapor Chamber cooling)
    • 15.6" diagonal 4K UHD, UWVA, BrightView, micro-edge, AMOLED, multitouch-enabled, edge-to-edge glass, 400 nits, 100% DCI-P3 (3840 x 2160)
    • Intel® Wi-Fi 6 AX 201 (2x2) and Bluetooth® 5 Combo
    • 2x Thunderbolt 3 (does not accept charging)

Razer Blade 15 Base (Mercury White) ~$1600 used

    • NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 2070 with Max-Q (8GB GDDR6 VRAM) Studio Edition
    • 15.6" OLED 4K 60Hz, 100% DCI-P3, factory calibrated
    • Intel® Wireless-AX201 (802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax), Bluetooth® 5.1, Gigabit Ethernet (replaceable)
    • 1x Thunderbolt 3 (does not accept charging)

    Thanks!

looking for decent gaming laptop with mechanical keyboard under 1200

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 12:15 AM PDT

I'm not looking to get the 100% best amazing laptop...I figured decent gaming laptops made now are equivalent to the best gaming laptops from like 2-3 years ago. But I still want to get some value here....and my biggest gripe with playing games on laptops was the keyboard felt worse...like you didn't have as much tactile control as a mechanical keyboard.

Can anyone help me out here?

Looking for a good gaming laptop ~$1000

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 02:24 AM PST

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

~$1000 USD. I'm fine with going over a bit though.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

I'm a bit wary of refurbs/used. I think it's a gamble but if you guys think it'd be fine than I'm open to it

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance is the key thing for me. I don't care if the battery instantly dies upon unplugging. I just want to be able to play video games without any lag or fps drops

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    No importance

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

I'm pretty indifferent. As long as I can clearly see what I'm doing I'm fine.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

League of legends is the main game I play. I'd like to be able to play larger games without lagging like skyrim/red dead redemption but that seems unrealistic considering how poorly they run on my current laptop

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Medium settings is fine but a steady 60 FPS would be my hopes.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

As long as I have something functional I don't really have a preference.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I have absolutely 0 knowledge about computers but I'm doing as much research and getting as much advice as possible. I'll probably buy something on cyber monday to save costs

Please help me choose from 5 laptops

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 10:09 PM PDT

    Hi

I need to choose one of five laptops that will serve a single purpose....3d game development and everything related to it. I have a very high budget, but i don't necessarily have to buy the most expensive one if the cheaper one meets my requirements. I need a sufficiently powerfull laptop that can handle smooth work in Unreal/Unity, including HDRP or VR. I don't have to work in higher resolution than FullHD and don't need raytracing. I choose a five interesting laptops and need your advice. I sorted them by Price from cheapest to most expensive.

    1. Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 - Great review, supposedly great cpu.

    Ryzen 7 4800HS CPU RTX 2060 Max-Q GPU 16Gb RAM

    1. Msi GE66 Raider - Good Price, great design and good performance in gaming.

    Intel Core i7 10875H RTX 2070 Super 32Gb RAM

    1. Asus Zenbook Pro Duo - I like this dual screen concept + both screens touchable.

    Intel Core i9 10980HK RTX 2060 32Gb RAM

    1. Msi GE75 Raider - Most powerfull one. Im not sure about the cooling.

    Intel Core i9 10980HK RTX 2080 Super 32Gb RAM

    1. Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo - Dual screen with better GPU.

    Intel Core i9 10980HK RTX 2080 Super Max-Q 32Gb RAM

If you know about something better, feel free to write. Razer and Gigabyte laptops are not available in my country. There is also no desktop option. If u have experience with some of the components, (especially GPU's) please write too. If you confirm to me that the RTX 2060 is sufficient for my purpose then i have no reason to buy the RTX 2080. The only problem is that i don't know anything about laptop cards and especially for use in game dev there is no information.

Looking for a laptop for uni

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 09:22 PM PDT

G'day everyone, looking for a laptop for university that suits what I'm after, not particularly fluent so hoping this will help.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: (Australian dollars)

    ~$2500

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

Would prefer new, due to planning on using the device for a long time

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Priority is probably performance (though I don't know if it should be), followed by battery life, followed by the build quality (I don't want anything to be overly gamerish), and then screen size around 15.6 inches

How important is weight and thinness to you?

I'm not too fussed about thinness, but id prefer if the laptop wasn't a brick

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

15.6" is the preferred size. 14' seems a bit small, and 17' seems too much

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Just some casual gaming Csgo, maybe cod, cities skylines, satisfactory (are the main games) Gta and other rockstar titles may also make the cut
I tend to get bored gaming a lot of the time

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

See above Just want something that's going to perform nicely for the 5 year course duration

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I want a keyboard that will be nice to type large amounts on, essays etc, without having issues with the keyboard suffering. I also would like a touch screen (if possible), and a nicer quality screen Not too much rgb, standout lights or anything abstract looking. Just a run of the mill laptop

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I'm entirely hopeless, in the sense that I want the most powerful laptop I can afford. However, I know I must consider battery life and the fact this device will primarily be for getting work done (typing essays, lots of reading etc). The course is a 5 year one, so the durability must come into question a lot also. If anyone else is studying or has studied law, give me your thoughts. I'd prefer to run Windows also, due to it being familiar. I'm not buying a mac book, and a chromebook doesn't exactly appeal either. Otherwise, cheers for the help

Acer Swift 3 vs IdeaPad Slim 5i

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 12:29 AM PDT

I am looking for a lightweight laptop around 65K INR. Been confused between the 2 models. The Slim 5i has a 300nits screen while the Swift 3 has a 230nits screen (would that make much of a difference?). Also the Slim 5i has its speaker on both sides of the keyboard which would (in theory, atleast) sound better than the bottom firing ones on the Swift 3. The Swift 3 is atleast .20kg lighter. I don't need integrated graphics. Most of my work would be some light statistical softwares, writing, reading, media consumption. Please suggest any other laptop if you have in mind. Hopefully they will be available in India. Other specifications I would like, a Type-C port than supports charging, a fingerprint scanner, a matte display, and a decent battery. Also would love an explanation regarding the importance of Wifi 6 in today's time, or will I be okay with Wifi 5 for say the next 4 years? Thank you for spending the time reading the post, as well as for your suggestions.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

      65,000INR, India

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

      Lightweight, good built, decent battery

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Preferably less than 1.4kg, so yeah, weight is important for me.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      14 inches.

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

      Will use RStudio, STATA, SPSS

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

      No gaming

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Preferably a Type-C port that supports charging, fingerprint scanner, good battery.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

As stated earlier, confused between Acer Swift 3 and IdeaPad Slim 5i. Please suggest any other laptop if you have in mind. Thanks.

    Reusing old laptop parts

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 06:43 PM PDT

I bought a top of the line Dell XPS 15 in 2016 . The laptop recently broke and when my local computer repair shop discovered that there is an issue with the motherboard, they are not sure what is needed to repair it. I have already spent about $100 investigating the issue. I have looked into the price of a new motherboard and it is above 500 in ebay. I do not know how to replace a motherboard and I dont even know if it will match. I am leaning towards buying a new laptop but I am trying to save money where I can. Therefore, I am considering reusing some of the parts from the old laptop.

The XPS has 16GB, DDR4-2133MHz, Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M, and 512GB PCIe Solid State Drive. I am considering buying the basic Dell Precision which comes with 4GB, DDR4 2933Mhz, 128 GB PCIe SSD and no GPU. I am thinking of reusing my RAM ,SSD and GPU from my old laptop. Is that a possibility?

I hope you do not mind the long post. Happy Haloween!

This will be used for everything and I'll have it with me always. I mostly watch Netflix and play light gaming here and there. Any suggestions or questions please let me know!

Is the Acer Swift 3 a good laptop?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 09:53 PM PDT

I'm looking a getting a laptop (first time buying a laptop for reference) and I've been looking at the Acer Swift 3 with the Ryzen 7 4700u cpu. I would mainly be using it for programs like word and PowerPoint, beginner-intermediate python programming and light gaming.

I know that the screen isn't great but that isn't a huge concern to me since I don't need great graphics.

So this upcoming Christmas my parents are planning on buying me the Xbox Series X but I have always wanted a PC for gaming, sadly I don't have the money to get a high end one. I was wondering if It was possible to get a decent gaming laptop for 500$ that can run games decently instead of getting the Xbox Series S. Games I would like to play: Fortnite, CS:GO, GTA Online, BO3 Custom Zombies.

    [Help] Best laptop under 700$?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 09:14 PM PDT

Hi there, first post here so I really appreciate the help! (English is my second language, so please, bear with me)

Recently, my laptop suffered a lot of damage and it's not working anymore, I had an HP folio 9470m, which was a pretty decent laptop. So now I'm looking for a bit of an upgrade, as I'm currently working with some light coding, image, and video editing, and my work requires me to have a lot of chrome tabs open.

I've been doing some research and I'm a bit torn between these 2 models: Acer Swift 3 and Lenovo Flex 5 , these are the best ones I've been able to find under that budget. What do you guys think? or do you have a suggestion for another laptop?

Thank you so much in advance for reading and for your help!

    Bedside Media laptop

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 09:08 PM PDT

    Hello SuggestaLaptop,

I can't sleep without something being on in the back ground. Not a great habit I know but it gets the job done. I currently have a 17 inch 2 in one laptop that I love but the brightness on it is a little to overwhelming for my wife. Also, I like to sleep with a cup of water by my bed and my cats love to knock things over in the middle of the night. I dont want to mess up my current laptop which Ive had some close calls with spills before. So I want to buy a new laptop that is far less expensive and smaller screen with better speakers to watch content as I fall asleep. I am not a huge fan of chromebooks id really perfer a typical laptop. Which brings me to here, looking for some advice from you all that might save me a lot of time browsing 100 different laptops on amazon or newegg.

    -doesn't need to impress (processor/ram)

-decent hard drive space (atleast 300gb)

    -bluetooth

-small screen. around 12 inch maybe?

-Great speakers. This is an important one. wife doesnt mind noise.

-High quality screen. if its a small screen i atleast want it to look good.

-touch screen preferred but not a deal breaker.

-full keyboard. also not a deal breaker.

-price. im looking at the 200 - 400 usd range but cheaper the better.

just want a laptop that if fully fucntional and powerful enough to stream everything. I want to be able to bring it around and not lose my mind if it gets damaged.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Larger is preferred, so 15"+ at least

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Using mostly for photo and audio storage, video chat like Roll20, and some music editing w/ ProTools & Ozone and other audio software.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Would be nice to try PC gaming as I've always been a console gamer, but no specifics. Definitely don't need high-end gaming specs.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Would prefer a back-lit keyboard for dark room work. For Pro Tools it looks like I'll need a minimum of 16GB of RAM, 32GB preferred. Otherwise, nothing specific other than not wanting it to come with software bloat.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Thanks for your help, I've spent my life buying crappy cheap laptops and I'd like to invest in a solid one with tons of fast storage to last me a while. Appreciate all of the help.

EDIT: Updated specs after reading more about Pro Tools requirements.

Solid work computer than can handle multiple CRM's, heavy emails, lots of virtual meetings, some light gaming, excellent display, functional keyboard, less is more, the longer the battery life the better. Will sacrifice battery life for performance, using a Lenovo idea pad now, but am unimpressed with display. Like Lenovo. Will consider all suggestions based on criteria. Needs webcam.

    School/general use laptops under $600?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 11:23 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      600 USD or less.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      I'd prefer to buy new.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life > performance > build quality > form factor.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Something light, relatively thin. Something I can put in my backpack and carry around on the daily.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
Mostly indifferent, but preferably on the smaller side because I want portability. 14" or less?
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Just programs like Discord, Spotify, Scrivener and Anki. No gaming or heavy editing.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I don't plan on gaming. Maybe Minecraft, at the most.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'm a writer, so a comfortable keyboard is #1. I'd actually prefer not have touch-screen or a foldable, but a reliable build is important because I want to keep this laptop for at least five years.
