Linux Ubuntu Software vs. Snap Store

Linux Ubuntu Software vs. Snap Store

    Ubuntu Software vs. Snap Store

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:38 AM PST

I have a machine running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.
Ubuntu Software (orange icon) is installed. If I open up US and view installed applications, I see a Snap Store install (teal icon).
Was Snap Store supposed to usurp Ubuntu Software in 20.04? I don't see anyway to actually launch Snap Store; It's not available in my applications drawer.

Is there a Linux music player with the same function as the Advanced Limiter in foobar2000?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:48 AM PST

It's annoying to have to adjust the volume for everything I listen to, in foobar you just set it to use the Advanced Limiter and everything should be equal (this is without RG and stuff).

    Apps, Desktop Environment and Dependencies

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 10:27 AM PST

    Hi everyone

Does all apps/programs work on the different desktop environments?

Say for example the KDE connect app. Does it work on other Desktop Environments other than KDE ?

And if I install a linux distro and install a new Desktop Environment, does the dependencies get installed as well? Say for instance a distro uses GTK and I install a LxQt environment does Qt get installed or how does it work ?

    Change boot logo

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 12:57 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

I'm willing to change the boot logo on my live USB.

I changed the logo.png in the plymouth file.

When trying to update Initramfs I got the following response:

update-initramfs is disabled since running on read-only media

The logo.png I have replaced works on shutdown but not on boot.

    Would you guys please help?

    Thanks!

What is the use of GNU od default output format?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 05:59 AM PST

    Hi,

I am wondering, why does GNU od come with default option "oS" to display octal short integers (2 bytes). What is the use of this 2 byte representation?

Why is the 2 byte preferred to the 1 byte representation?

    Thanks!

    Linux with a recovery partition?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 06:29 AM PST

If I take an ISO and dd it to a large hard drive (not a thumb drive) - and then install Linux on the rest of the hard drive - would I then have, in effect, a recovery partition?

Now imagine that the update process could update that image while the main Linux was running.

KDE Plasma: Touchpad and Nipple Stop Working after System Is Timeout Suspended

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:05 AM PST

I have an old Lenovo, thus both a touchpad and a Thinkpad style finger nipple. I noticed that if the system is unused for a while, enough for it to be not only screen locked but also suspended, then the touchpad and nipple completely stopped responding when I logged back in. This is Kubuntu with KDE Plasma. Is there something in the system settings I could fiddle around to somehow bypass this problem?

The problem appeared when the system was on battery power, not AC mains. I'm not sure if this affects it somehow, but better mention it as well.

The only way to get the touchpad and the nipple to respond in any way was to force shutdown the system and power on again. I tried to navigate to the system settings with the tabulator key and some shortcut keys and typing on the keyboard. However, I didn't find anything on the touchpad settings tabs that would solve the problem instantly.

Kubuntu 20.10 with KDE Plasma, the system was installed already during the Beta phase of 20.10. The computer is a more than five years old Thinkpad.

    Can't find Driver Manager

How do I use the menu in MC on a keyboard that doesn't have Function (F) keys?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:41 AM PST

I know I can hit ESC + # to activate the menu, but how about for things like Rename (which is normally SHIFT + F6)? I tried hitting ESC, then SHIFT+6, but that doesn't work.

    fish shell and java

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:50 AM PST

    Hello,

After installing the fish shell, I cannot seem to be able to run java programs from the terminal.

I have installed the latest openJDK with sdkman.io (on bash), and it does not seem to work fish.

sdk gives unknown command/cannot be found and running a program with java -jar ~/..[...].jar gives

Error: A JNI error has occurred, please check your installation and try again

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsupportedClassVersionError: net/runelite/launcher/Launcher has been compiled by a more recent version of the Java Runtime (class file version 55.0), this version of the Java Runtime only recognizes class file versions up to 52.0

which means fish only finds an older version installed somewhere on the system (probably from the Manjaro repos)

Running it by double clicking from Nautilus or Caja launches it without problem however.

Can anyone help me fixing this issue please?

How exactly can i install games on different drives?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 01:43 PM PST

I read a bit about the structure of the linux file system and from what i understand you can only change the /home directory to a different drive, one of my questions is: can i have two /home directories? Let's say i want some of my heavy personal files to go to a bigger disk but i want some more lightweight files to go into my ssd. Is that possible?

Also for steam.. i read that you can have two steam libraries in separate drives and im planing on doing so once i install Pop_OS in dual boot with windows (im gonna install linux on a different drive from where i have windows installed btw.) but my question is: is it hard to achieve this? I read somewhere that you need to know what to do with your file structure before you install anything so how exactly can i arrange my structure to work with both the things i mentioned?

I know installing apps on different drives is a mess and not recommended so i don't think im going to try that one but i really am interested in installing games on different drives.

Also does this method of having multiple libraries work with games that you play outside from steam? Talking about games like League or Runescape. Thanks.

Where can i find the logs of commands executed by other programs, services, etc..??

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 12:39 PM PST

My problem is a i want a log of what commands a specific systemd.unit executed, however the closest that i could find is either use journalctl -aeo but that doesn't show any sign of my script being executed, nor does /var/log/syslog.

But my script runs fine, it creates a file on my desktop. I just have no logs of it and i don't understand why or where to look for that.

How can i display text in one line in terminal or append command output without adding a new line in a text file?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 11:55 AM PST

I made a script to display server info on my main pc's statusbar. It takes cpu temp from sensors and free memory from free, it writes these infos on a file with ">>",(File.looks like that)

    12.3'C

    123M

Copies that file to my main pc with "scp" and i display it on waybar with "cat" command but it doesn't display memory, it only prints the cpu temp. I am ok with displaying these text on one line or just appending command output without a line, a better way to do this will be even better. Main pc is a artix and server is a raspi 3 b.

A linux noob who wants play games

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 11:14 AM PST

    Hello

I want to install arch linux on my computer with the zen installer, but I have a problem with disk partitioning

I have a SSD which has 111GB of capacity and a HDD which has 931GB of space.

With this setup I obviously need to manually partition my drives.

I thought I could just have on my SSD:

    /boot/efi 512MB / (rest of the space)

and on my HDD: /home (all of the space-8GB) /swap 8GB

But with this setup most of my SSD won't be useful because it will only contain the root and boot partitions.

On windows I could have windows 10 on my SSD and I could put Total War Warhammer II on the SSD because the game loads really slowly on a HDD.

So can I replicate this method which I used on my Windows 10 pc?

Have the operation system on the SSD but I can put stuff I want to play on it too like TW Warhammer II, and for the rest of my stuff could be on the HDD likes photos other games or maybe programs.

Sorry for the lengthy post. My native language isn't English sorry for the grammatical error.

Want to run a headless plex server for windows on ubuntu, complete noob who needs help!!!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:24 AM PST

    Hi,

I just got a new machine that I want to run as a headless plex server, as it comes with no OS I need to get one installed, I have heard people recommend ubuntu but I have major problems that I need help with.

    Uses:

    • Headless plex server
    • Want to be able to control via windows pc (on the same network)
    • Want to be able to transfer files from my windows pc to a hdd connected to ubuntu server

    Concerns:

    1. As it will be a headless machine I need to be able to connect to my machine (locally within my own network only) I have no idea how to do this, I have seen people recommend putty but I don't know the terminal commands so I really need the GUI and I need to be able to connect from my windows PC to control my server. What is the best way to do this.
    2. As a follow on from above I also need to transfer files from my windows pc to my ubuntu server (for instance I rip a movie on my pc and want it on my plex server, I need to be able to send that file to the hdd connected to my server.
    3. I need both of the above points to work from my windows to my linux server and be secure. Again all communications between the two devices will be locally.
    4. How do I do things like updating ubuntu whilst headless? I guess I could instigate the update but when it goes to restart, how will I be able to connect again from my windows pc so I can see what is going on? Along the same lines, if I turn off my ubuntu server or restart it for whatever reason would I need to sign back in etc before being able to connect from my windows machine??? As I plan to run this headless I need to be able to get access to my server from windows pc at all times. (It would be a MAJOR pain if everytime I updated or shut down I had to connect a monitor/keyboard/mouse especially as I don't have ones laying around so need to source them and it would be too much hassle).

So in summary I need to be able to connect to my server with a GUI from another windows machine locally and transfer/delete files that are on a hard drive connected via usb 3.0 to my server. And this needs to be secure.

Is this something easy to do or would I be better off sticking to windows?

Again complete noob here so any help is appreciated just don't make it too complicated otherwise I can't understand!

    Thank you
