DO NOT download etcher from etcher.NET!

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 04:35 PM PDT

I made this mistake while going from windows 10 to pop os. If you're going to use etcher (balena etcher) to flash a usb go to [balena.io/etcher/]. This is their real site! etcher.NET gives you nothing but a bogus installer that tries to get you to install several unwanted software, before proceeding to NOT install etcher. This is what I get for trying Bing, which recommended this above the legitimate site.

    edit: grammar

If I install Flameshot from the Ubuntu software app I get a version that can't save images properly (opens "Portal" app), If I install with apt I get a version that doesn't have the colour wheel (tools option).

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:14 AM PST

It's weird that each has it's own bug that the other doesn't have.

Same thing happens on my basically untouched VM version of Ubuntu 18.04.

When in GUI mode, pressing space should bring up the tools menu with a colour wheel.

Too lazy to open an issue on the Githab page. My phone is off and out of reach, how can 2factorAuth?

Starting with Linux : the method I recommend

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 08:23 AM PST

I started with Linux 22 years ago. I never gave up. At home I only use Linux. I have tried (and worked with) a lot of distributions. My recommended method to start with this operating system : no virtualization and no dualboot ... but use of cheap second hand machines working with one operating system. My point of view is of course debatable ... What do you think of it ?

    Very noob question

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:10 AM PST

I'm learning web development in the time I have before starting CS degree through The Odin Project.

In the first steps they recommended using Linux for programming to avoid bugs.

Will using VirtualBox be good for that? I built my computer a month ago so I think I'm fine in terms of hardware.

    Thank you very much!

I still have Cursor of set issue with pen-tablet KDE

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 09:21 AM PST

    Hi,

This is strange...everything worked fine on my Manjaro KDE until I upgraded to a new 4k monitor....

naturally like any other user I used display scaling to 150%..

I have the cursor offset issue in Qt based applications except at scaled display...

    what i have tried

    • reintalling wacom tablet drivers [input-wacom-dkms , digimend drivers]
    • reboot

    I have a Huion HS44 tablet on manjaro KDE [plasma5.19.5 Qt5.15.1]

It would be helpfull if any one gave me suggestion.

    Thanks in advance!

Count every time a word appears in a file, even on a same line

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 11:27 AM PST

Hello, I know this question sounds easy but even after a lot of time looking on Google I can't find an appropriate answer.

So I have a file with some sequences and I want to count all occurrences of a word inside this file :

$ cat uniques_seqs.fa | grep 'CCCC' TTTTTAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACCCCC AAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGCCCCGGGGGGGG AAAAAGGGGGTTTTTCCCC

So alright, I have the lines where this pattern appears, but wc -l won't tell me the amount of times CCCC appears, just the numbers of line where it is. In this example the correct answer would be 4 since CCCC is twice in the first line, once in the second and third line.

What could I use instead ?

    Can I run a custom Linux on an Ex_Word ( EW-G570C)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:21 AM PST

    Hello there,

here in Germany many people are using language computers (Casio Ex-Word), but I wonder, if it is possible, to run a custom linux on it. I can't find any information of the chipset and the device itself hasn't any internet connection or other options to make up a wired connection, or to import data otherwise. Is it possible to run a custom version on it? What do you think? I just judt found one post, which is about a Japanese older model with a USB port.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 09:08 AM PST

Sometimes I need to kill all my Firefox instances at once. I ised to do this via "killall firefox". Then It changed to "killall Mainthread" which already got confusing and now, with the latest(?) Firefox update I can not kill it fast via killall.
Any ideas how to get this functionality back?

How to change the Qt theme running i3?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 01:36 AM PST

    Hi,

I am running arch linux with i3. I am wondering how I can change the theme of Qt programs. I have set my GTK theme to Adwaita, but at the moment all the programs running Qt look really ugly.

Is there a way to change the default Qt theme to Adwaita, or maybe just change it so it doesn't look really bad?

    Thanks

    Applying patch files

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:08 AM PST

Hello! I'm using linux mint with XFCE4 and would like to be able to disable the "upload to imgur" option in the xfce4-screenshooter.

I have found this post (and downloaded the .patch file):
    https://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=13730
    https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16420

This may sound a little silly, but how does one go about applying the patch from a .patch file?
I have tried running the "patch <file>" command, but nothing seems to happen. I bet I've missed something and am doing it wrong.

    Thanks in advance for help!

    32bit distro recommendation

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 05:40 AM PST

My mom was getting rid of her old 10.1 inch aspire one. I love the size for lab use. It came with windows xp. Which is useless to me. So i want to give it a second life. While looking up on distros to install, i noticed alot of ditros dropped 32bit support.

I have intel n270(1.6ghz Single core), with 1 gig of ram. I currently have a 2gig stick coming in the mail along with an ssd to help with boot up.

I gave LXLE a try yesterday. Worked fine. Wasnt super impressed tho.

What are some good distro for low end systems that still support 32bit

    Understanding Linux Documentation

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 09:56 PM PDT

I'm currently taking an infamous operating systems class at my university, and yes, I do understand now why it is so. We're working with Linux, and before this class, I barely knew what Linux was, so here I am. We were kind of just thrown into the deep end and was asked to write a LKM. Now I was able to complete the assignment, and I understand how it works but for the life of me, I do not understand Linux documentation. The only way I completed the assignment was with a million google searches.

So here's what's happening. I'm on kernel.org and I'm browsing through the directories and find myself at the header file that I need for my assignment, https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux.git/plain/include/linux/sched.h?h=v4.9.6

I open it and I'm just completely lost, like there are barely any notes that can give me some idea of how to use any of those functions. I asked the TA in my class about this and he was just like, there's notes in the header file, and in my mind I'm like, I'm aware of how useless those notes are.

So here's my question, where do I find documentation that actually describes to me how I can use kernel module functions in a C program that's not in some alien language. Linux has so much potential to be awesome, but I will never know it is until I can understand what I'm looking at.

Tl;dr I'm looking for good documentation that can show me how to utilize existing kernel modules to write C programs that are loadable kernel modules. Something that is nice to read like Oracle Java API documentation.

Audio cuts out repeatedly every few minutes

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 10:00 PM PDT

    Hello,

I recently wiped my device and installed a fresh new copy of Manjaro Linux. However I have found that when I connect to my Bluetooth headphones, all the audio cuts out every few minutes for about 10-15 seconds. My system is up to date, running kernel 5.8, with 5.6 installed. How can I fix this? (Newer Sony noise-cancelling headphones) I also believe that pulse audio is installed onto this copy aswell.

(I had my system out for a month for it to be repaired. I am currently getting back to using Linux as my daily driver.)

What's the difference between LXDE and LXQt?

    Posted: 31 Oct 2020 05:00 PM PDT

At first I thought they were apart of the same software family, but apparently they're two completely different projects, both designed for old or low power hardware? What's the difference between them, and what are their pros and cons?

Big problem after failed installation, I need help, please.

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 12:20 AM PDT

I have this old computer with a GA-78LMT-S2PT (rev 4.1) motherboard and had Lubuntu installed and it was working fine yesterday, and updated some stuff, today it froze every time I turned it on, So I made it worse trying to fix it. I had a copy of Linux-Lite so decided to give it a try since the Lubuntu was not responding, got to the part where you choose language and location and it froze. Tried again and went for the option to install it directly. It began and froze again, left it there for like an hour and nothing changed. Decided to force shut it down, I did and turn it on again, it did turn on and showed the normal screen with the boot options then followed by the normal white text for like 1 or 2 seconds before the screen goes black and the machine restart.

From what I've gathered looking for a solution I suspect I corrupted the BIOS? What Do you think? and more importantly What can I do? I can only access the CMOS screen but dont know enough how to use it or if it can help me, I tried to boot different distros from usb even one that doesnt need install but it behaves the same, just restarts in the same point.

Please help me, I need to continue my work.
