Issues with PC after cleaning case

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 03:05 AM PST

I took out most components while cleaning out my case, screwed them back in, and am now having the following issues:

    • PC turns on automatically when I flip the PSU switch, but the power button at the top of the case seems to neither turn on or turn off the PC
    • My monitor doesn't recognize the graphics card, despite everything being plugged in, and if I try to connect to the motherboard's graphics card, my monitor only powers off
    • only my cooling system's fans will spin, the chassis fan and the graphics card's fan are completely still
    • my peripherals may or may not be working. Only my mouse lights up when I connect it to its USB port, and due to the issues with my monitor, I can't confirm if they still function

I'm actually in the process of replacing my PSU because it's started malfunctioning and has caused a few crashes recently. However, my PC was working fine up until I cleaned the case, so I'm worried I might've done something that potentially harmed the motherboard while taking it out/putting it back. My case is pretty snug so I had a little bit of trouble screwing everything back in place, though I avoided using excess force as much as I could. Both the motherboard and graphics card light up normally, and I'm not hearing any beep codes.

I've been trying to troubleshoot this for a few hours now, but I have no idea where the problem is. Any help would be much appreciated.

Edit: After having the power source flipped off for a while, the PC has stopped turning on automatically when I flip it back on. The power button for the PC itself continues to do nothing.

Firewire driver update/uninstall leads to system reboot.

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 04:15 AM PST

    Hey r/24hoursupport

I wanted to update my firewire driver to a legacy version since I believe that is what is preventing my audio interface device from connnecting to my PC (via Firewire cable). However, every time i try to do anything regarding the drivers (update/uninstall), it starts for a second (the green bar starts filling up to 10%) and then my PC restarts saying '' your pc ran into a problem and needs to restart. we're just collecting some error info''.

What am i missing? I just want to install the legacy driver without the PC restarting.

    Thanks!

Laptop can no longer see hard drive

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 09:48 AM PST

    Hello all,

My laptop (a Lenovo Thinkpad P51s) is around three years old and it can no longer see the hard drive. I have tried several hard drives including a new one and it still does not work. Currently, the laptop can still read USBs and other external devices, however. When it completely stopped reading the hard drive completely, I had tried to suspend the laptop, which was running Void Linux at the time. After freezing for several hours, I finally resorted to forcefully shutting it off with the power button.

Currently, in the BIOS menu, it is only detecting the PCI-LAN port. Before it completely stopped reading the hard drive, it was also sometimes having trouble reading USBs upon bootup, but after a couple of reboots it could see a USB or the hard drive in the BIOS menu. Here is a complete list of things I have done to try to solve this problem.

    1. I have run a full diagnostic through Lenovo Hardware diagnostics found in the BIOS and it did not detect anything wrong with the motherboard or memory. It completely passed all the tests 100%.
    2. I have also done a full reset by taking out the RAM chips and powering it on and off and also powering it on and off with the RAM chips installed.
    3. I have recently replaced the hard drive cable and it still does not see the hard drive.

I am not sure what else I should do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

EDIT: I found the source of the problem and I can attribute to mechanical failure. The slot for where the hard drive cable plugs in is damaged.

Corsair H35 Headset Mic not working on laptop anymore

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 05:32 AM PST

    Hi,

The mic on my headset was working just fine yesterday. I hopped on discord today and the audio is now being detected by my laptop, which makes the keyboard typing extremely loud. I can't figure out how to get my mic working again.

Edit: Mic access is enabled but my laptop just isn't detecting the headset in general.

New card not displaying on either monitor

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 03:38 PM PST

Basically what the title says. I'm currently running a 1070 and want to install my new 2080ti. Everything is plugged in correctly and the lights and fans on the card turn on when the rest of the computer does, but neither monitor is working with it and they both say no signal

AIO Pump not running when used with MSI Z490 Gaming Carbon motherboard

    Posted: 28 Nov 2020 02:30 PM PST

Before anything else, I reinstalled this pump back onto the original Asus X99 motherboard it came off and it functions properly on that motherboard. Pump failure is not my issue and I took the time to verify that the pump does in fact still work. I borrowed another Corsair H115i AIO from a friend, installed it and it also does not operate on the MSI mobo, but works properly on the ASUS X99 mobo.

Also, I know this is a long post but I want to put up all the info I have to avoid suggestions I've already implemented. I appreciate any help offered as I've run out of ideas.

This is a new build, and Windows is not yet installed. The system posts properly and I can enter BIOS. All case fans operate properly and as the CPU temps rise the case fans are all ramping up as they are supposed to. Only the AIO pump does not operate as it should.

The cooler is a Corsair H110i GTX. It's old, I know, but it looks good with the new parts and more importantly it still does a good job with no air bubble noise. I would prefer not to replace it if I can avoid it. The cost isn't my concern, rather the quality of newer AIOs is lower and they all look pretty awful.

The cooler has 4 leads. The USB lead I have plugged into JUSB1 header. The Sata power lead is plugged into the PSU through a SATA power cable. The fan lead splits to run the radiator's two 140mm fans. The single wire ending in a 3-pin plug is connected to the CPU_Fan_1 header.

This is the same way I installed it on my previous X99 mobo. But my results are not the same on the MSI motherboard and I can't seem to figure out why.

    • The Corsair logo illuminates properly.
    • The radiator fans both activate properly.
    • The pump does not activate.

Unfortunately without the pump I have a limited time to fart around in the MSI bios which I am very unfamiliar with. I'd also prefer not not run the CPU at 100C while fumbling around. Of course since there is a ticking clock as soon as I turn on the PC my IQ is reduced by half and I lose my ability to control a mouse because reasons.

What I have already managed to try based on local suggestions:

    • Connect a regular fan to CPU_Fan_1 to see if a fan runs off that header. Fan operates properly, header is not faulty.
    • Connect the AIO pump 3-pin lead to the PUMP_FAN1 header. No change, PUMP_FAN1 header will also operate a fan properly and is not faulty.
    • Connect the AIO pump 3-pin lead to a SYS_FAN lead. No change.
    • Connect the AIO pump 3-pin lead to the PSU directly using a molex to 3-pin adapter. No change, using voltage tester direct power from the Molex plug is not 12V. I believe the pump needs a 12V signal.
    • In BIOS switch fan from PWM to DC. I have done this but unlike the BIOS in my previous PC there is no "apply" button so I'm not sure the changes I'm making are even taking effect.
    • Allow the CPU to reach higher temps to see if the pump kicks in at higher temps - Eventually I get a message that the CPU is overheating and the PC shuts down. I would prefer not to have that happen again and would prefer not to even attempt another similar strategy.
    • In BIOS switch the voltage manually to 12V. I've entered BIOS several times and as I am unfamiliar with the MSI BIOS have not found how/where to do this. The CPU temps start climbing over 90C and I have to shut down.

Based on about 6 hours of reading last night, I'm thinking the AIO pump needs a 12V signal to activate and is not getting a full 12V signal. The pump should be running 100% at all times unlike the fans and requires a simple 12V signal to activate. The mobo does not support my ancient AIO because it doesn't use the current standard AIO hookup. As the signal cable connected to CPU_FAN_1 is a single one direction signal wire , the mobo is not detecting power draw from CPU_Fan_1 and therefore is not sending a signal to the pump to fire up.
