Trying to get the CAT5 in my new home working, but don't really understand what I'm seeing in the wiring cabinet.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 10:45 AM PST

In what appears to be a fairly common theme here on this subreddit, I'm trying to get the CAT5 wiring in my new place working and it hasn't been as simple as I had hoped. I've got around 8 jacks between all the rooms in the house and found what looks to be the wiring cabinet, but there are only 3 CAT5 cables in there with male ends (labeled 1,2,3 in the picture). There are other CAT5 cables in the cabinet, but they all go to that punch down thing there. No other wires are connected to that distribution module.

I tested the three male cables with a cable tester and was able to determine where one of them goes (though one of its internal wires isn't working). The other two I'm assuming go to some bedrooms which I didn't want to test last night since people were sleeping. But I did not find the important one that is connected to my living room.

My end goal is to get the important jacks talking to each other, so I guess my main questions are:

    1. given that there are ~8 jacks and only 3 CAT5 cables with male ends, is it safe to assume that the rest of them are connected to that punch down module?
    2. Are all the ones connected to the punch down supposed to be able to talk to each other by nature of that panel or do I need to somehow link them still?
    3. How do I identify and test those cables in the punch down if they have no male end to plug into the tester? I'm assuming there is another tool for this.
    4. how can I connect one of the male-ended CAT5 cables with one of the punch down cables?

Bypassing the AT&T Fiber residential gateway

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 01:10 PM PST

The AT&T residential gateway has some limitations to the sessions it can handle. This might be fine for many home users, but I think there are many of us who need to increase the limit. This post shows the steps required to use your own firewall and put the Arris gateway to the side where it has no impact on the sessions you can have from your home network.

Verizon router is producing wifi but the ethernet is not working

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:36 PM PST

I have an old Verizon router and am trying to download a large game on my xbox. About 2 months ago my ethernet worked fine with my Xbox but earlier this month I tried using it and it was not giving me any connection and the WAN Ethernet light on the router is off. I was wondering how I could fix this because my wifi and xbox are both extremely slow so when they are working together to download a large game it can take days at a time (I have been downloading this game for 2 days). If you have any advice I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

ATT router not giving the correct speeds

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:06 PM PST

I am currently using a arris BGW210 in bridge mode with a TP link Archer c4000. When I run a speed test on the BGW210 I get around 950 down 950 up. Running a test on the archer gives me between 400-500 down and 800 up. I get the same results when plugging a computer directly into the BGW210. Last night speeds got as low as 60 up 100 down. This started 2 days ago and I haven't had any problems before this. Does anyone know what would be causing these problems so suddenly?

    New router recommendation

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:54 AM PST

I've been using an Apple AirPort for quite a while, and overall it's been rock solid. I had an overheating issue a few years ago and Apple replaced it free of charge, even though it was no longer under warranty and they'd stopped making them. However, as we've added more IoT devices, it's beginning to have connection issues. I added a few more Wemo smart plugs this past week and have needed to restart the AirPort daily to keep the connections alive. It's making me think that it might be about time for an upgrade. (Unless there's some settings I can tweak to make it work better, of course.)

I live in a 2-story, ~1400 sq ft house and the overall footprint is quite compact. Our internet provider is AT&T Fiber with gigabit speeds. The device that AT&T provided is bridged with the AirPort connected instead, as its own WiFi capabilities were problematic and it needed to be rebooted regularly. We have roughly 25+ devices connected including: 2 laptops, 2 desktops, 2 phones, 2 tablets, 2 TV streaming devices, a Sonos speaker system primarily using Sonosnet, 2 smart bulbs, and 12 Wemo smart outlets (with 3 more on the way.) There's ethernet throughout the house and 2 of the computers listed above are typically wired. Most devices are Apple.

Would mesh be a good option? Or would a newer, traditional router be a better bet? It seems like good traditional routers are just fine in "smaller" houses. I'm hesitant to go with an Amazon or Google owned product, due to privacy concerns. The Wirecutter recommends the TP-Link Archer AX50. Would that be a good option?

Any recommendations/advice are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Dummy looking for suggestions

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:17 PM PST

I'll try to keep this as short winded as possible...

My current setup is ziply gigabit fiber service, running directly into my ~7 year old AirPort Extreme. My home is a ranch style, 1400sqft. The location is basically dead center, we get wifi throughout, though it's limited to about 150 down, 250 up with frequent lag/disconnects while gaming on the Xbox.

My networking knowledge isn't very vast. I recently purchased an unmanaged gigabyte switch(TP-Link TL-SG108), as well as a UniFi PRO AP that arrives in a few days. The original wiring ran by ziply wrapped the house, roughly 200 feet and poked into the living room. I rewired the Ethernet from the demarcation point to the computer room, shortening the run to about 25 feet. I'll be fishing into the attic to run the AP when it arrives.

Here's my issue, I figured it would be as simple as plugging the cable from the demarc to the switch, and we'd be good to go. I wired demarc > switch > computer/gaming systems/apple airport(temporary for wifi). Airport worked great, computer worked great. Ps4 didn't register a lab cable, Xbox series x couldn't detect DHCP. Speedtest on the computer was 950/950.

I don't know what's going on, guessing the router is needed for assigning IP addresses to the gaming systems? I can't log into the switch since it's unmanaged.

I now have the cable running from demarc > airport > switch then to all of my equipment. It's working, although the speedtest on the computer is back down to 350/400. I know I know, that's fast enough, but if I'm paying for 1000/1000 I want to be at least close, especially when hardwired.

    1. Is there a way to make my current situation work?

    If not...

    1. What router/gateway would you suggest to get the speeds to pass through to get my speeds working correctly? Willing to keep or ditch the switch, as it was only $17. Don't bother asking if I need to port forward, use DHWK or whatever acronyms you'll come up with. I don't know what it means, so the answer will be no :)

    Thanks everyone!

    TP-Link AX20 or A7 for 1200 sq ft apartment?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 05:04 PM PST

Ordered the AX20 for $100 after cashback and a refurb A7 for $33... not sure if I really need the AX20 for my apartment size and usage. I'll be going for a combined ARRIS surfboard modem/router so either one is an improvement. My plan is only 100 mbps max for basics, streaming, and gaming.

Looking to replace the modem as well. Any suggestions?

    Need some guidance

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 06:56 PM PST

Can anyone help me a couple things going on with my home network....

    A. Why does my iPhone when connected to my home modem/router it has IP 192.168.1.102 but also states it's the loopback connection? B. Why my fiancé iPhone when connected via same modem router it does not appear in any device scan of said modem/router even though it has IP address 192.168.1.103 states on the device itself in Wi-Fi settings?

There are a couple other oddities but I can start here?

Changing ISP and buying a new router and modem. Will 200mbps be enough for my family?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 10:46 PM PST

I'm switching my ISP because AT&T only offers up to 75mbps at my address and im not even getting that. My only other choice in Comcast, but at least they offer plans ranging from 100-1000mbps. I'll be getting a new modem and router as well. I certainly won't rent one from Comcast or consider combo router/modem options. My house is only one story and under 1500sq ft, so I don't think an access point would be necessary, but please correct me if you think otherwise.

We have 2 adults and two young adults out of high school living in the house. One adult(me) will be working from home soon, so speed, stability and modern QoS settings are a must. There will be heavy internet usage from the rest of the household while work is in session: constant streaming from several devices, online gaming(low key competitive), 4 smart phones plus a few from potential guests, 6 smart light bulbs, doorbell camera and 3 security cameras, 3 smart homes and maybe someone downloading games/movies/music. That describes that heaviest usage my home network will see. Around 22+ devices on the network and 4 heavy users.

1000mbps from Comcast sounds attractive, but would we really even utilize that much? 200mbps sounds like it would be sufficient to me. Especially since we'd be coming from 45mbps and we're also upgrading the router and modem significantly.

I have my eye on a few routers and a couple of modems already, but I'm certainly open to suggestions if you think something in particular will fit my needs. I could see the cost of both totaling over $300...but I'd like to keep it as close to $200 as possible.

I have my eye on the Google Nest WiFi for its QoS settings and the CM1000 seems like a great modem. Both seem to be a bit overkill for me but I'm not sure. All opinions welcome!

Best to take care of this while the most holy of days is upon up!

    Netgear device limit

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 05:14 PM PST

    Hi all,

I just bought a new router from Costco to upgrade from the ISP supplied router. We have a full house and lots of devices. We bought a Netgear Nighthawk 6 AX4300.

The box says its for up to 25 devices. That seems pretty low since I've seen some $100 Asus routers that support twice that. Now I'm wondering if I should go with something else instead. Costco has a TP-Link Archer C4000 for the same price as the Netgear. Would this be the better option?

Its working great now so I'm not sure if it's worth switching out. But I don't want to hit a limit on how many devices we can connect since we're already at 21. I'd rather have more overhead. Will the router not allow anymore devices to connect when I hit 25?

    Thanks in advance!

    Building my home network

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:44 PM PST

    Hello!

I recently purchased a house, and plan to put ethernet jacks in all the rooms. I have 1000 ft of cat6 on the way, as well as the wall mounts, keystones, and a patch panel. For the time being while I save up some more, I'll be using a TP-Link 8-port gigabit switch. Eventually I plan on getting a wall-mounted rack and a TP-Link unmanaged 24-port switch.

What should be my next logical upgrade? Currently I have a Netgear modem/router/access point so I was thinking I would upgrade that situation (I was thinking a Motorola MB7621 modem, Ubiquiti Edgerouter X, and a Unifi AP AC Lite). I know that with separate equipment like that you generally get better quality and better performance, but what differences will I see on a day to day basis?

I'm currently on a Spectrum 200 Mbps plan. Funny thing is I sometimes will get over 200 Mbps on the WiFi on my phone.

Ring Doorbell - Not connecting when door is closed

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:35 PM PST

    Hello,

I recently purchased a ring doorbell and was able to connect it to the internet, and everything worked fine. Until I closed the door.

It seems to connect to the internet as long as I have my front door open. I am wondering if any one knows any solution to help me push the internet past this thick front door to connect to my RING doorbell seamlessly.

My current set up is a gigabit wifi modem/router from my ISP on the second floor of a three floor townhouse, and my internet speed is up to 500mb. The bedroom/office are on the second floor, and I would prefer to keep my modem/router on the second floor.

I am open to any and all solutions and from any brands/manufacturers.

    Thank you very much!

Best mesh Wifi set up for speed and coverage

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:20 PM PST

Currently connected to att fiber. Connected in bridge mode to Nest Wifi router and directly below on the first floor there is a nest point. Download speeds at the point are about 100. Download at the router is 300. I'm paying for 1000, and would like to get as close to that as possible while staying under $400.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Using two Wifi Adapters, one dedicated to internet another for smart devices

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 10:36 AM PST

I'll go ahead and say that I've successfully figured this out on my Windows 7 PC but I've since forgotten how.

I have a PC with a Wifi adapter that is connected to my router which has internet connection. I installed a secondary Wifi adapter that I intend on connecting to a secondary router that is not connected to the internet. I use this for smart devices. The reason for this is so I can have a closed network that isnt connected to the internet to run my smart devices on.

How do I configure windows to connect to both Wifi adapters simultaneously? I'd like to assign one adapter to connect to the router for internet and the other adapter to connect top the non internet router.

Lowering ping from one country to another

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:06 PM PST

Hey, not sure where to post this but this seemed like a decent spot.

I mostly do stuff in the US, but part time im in brasil. My ping from the US to brasil for a certain application I use is required to be under 120 ping, and the last time I was here I had my ping at 135. On this current visit I brought a new router thinking it would help, but it seems it hasnt. My current ping is 154 at the lowest and even using the old router doesnt go below that. I have 120 mbps upload and 5mbps download. Also I use a wired ethernet connection to my laptop.

Is there any way to lower the ping? The price doesnt really matter as it's very important to me to lower the ping. Any help at all is appreciated as I'm stumped and think it's not even possible at this point.

Netflix stream cuts out during file transfer

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:06 PM PST

I'm just hacky enough with networking to be dangerous, but I'm having a problem that is driving me bat shit crazy. Every time I transfer a large file (2-3 GB) from my laptop to my local NAS, the Netflix stream cuts out on my Roku TV.

Everything is CAT6... but even if there is a random CAT5e in there somewhere I should still be seeing at least gigabit speeds on the LAN. That's 120 MBps or so, and anything above 20 MBps on the file transfer kills the Netflix stream. I should have plenty of capacity to spare. It makes no sense to me.

    Network looks like this:

    WAN -> router (fiber) -> switch (CAT6)

    switch - > NAS (CAT6)

    switch -> Netgear WAC104 Access Point (CAT6)

    AP -> TV (CAT6)

    AP -> Laptop (802.11ac)

I really want to point my finger at the AP, since my TV and the wireless client are both talking to it... but documentation claims that the ports are gigabit and while the wireless aspect of an AP is "hub-like" I would hope the wired ports are "switch-like". Even if they aren't, I still should have bandwidth to spare across the entire network.

Anyone have some thoughts on what I should take a look at? I'm going to try the obvious stuff this weekend... like run a hundred foot cable from switch directly to the TV (and bypass the AP)... but I'm looking for ideas that I can try now before I make a cable.

    Thanks!

Downloading causes network to slow down.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:50 PM PST

So whenever someone downloads a game, our entire internet speed slows down to a crawl, we have CL Gigabit Fiber. It was just one person downloading, How does one download manage to siphon most of the bandwidth? Checking Speedtest after pausing download restores normal gigabit speed 880 ~ 930+ up/down. Soon as they started the download again, it goes down to a staggering 20-23 mbp/s. Throttling the platform does nothing. This is Epic Games platform and it also happened on Steam. Is it the programs or is it something with my connection/router/modem?

    Any help is appreciated.

If I have a VPN running on my laptop, how do I access other computers on my home network?

Currently Using WiFi Extenders, about to run Ethernet to 2 outbuildings, can I use the extenders as wired access points?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 10:44 AM PST

    Hello All,

I have a home, a workshop, and a guest house. All are within say 100 feet of one another. I'm currently running a WiFi extender in each outbuilding, setup as different guest networks.

The devices I'm using are these : https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08LVHRFQF/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

(actually one is a little different but same idea).

They're all running as WiFi Extenders (connected wireless) .

Now we have more guests working remotely and I'm looking to boost the speed in the guest house. Was planning to run cat6 cable to each outbuilding while I'm at it. I have a good router with 4 ports for running Ethernet out.

Can I use these as wired access points? Or do I need to buy new devices to place in each building? They have ethernet ports on them, but the only mention is that you can run a cable from the extender to your TV/laptop/whatever.

    Thanks so much.

Are two ISP providers in one house a scam?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:24 PM PST

I am currently living at home with my parents. They have Comcast wifi for the whole house. Between working from home and video games the wifi can get pretty bogged down just from my usage alone. Also Comcast is crappy and they have outages every once in awhile. I'm thinking of chipping in and getting Fios for an additional Wifi in the house so that everyone can work without interruptions. My dad is completely convinced that doing this would be a waste. He claims that the last time we had both Comcast and fios networks in the guys who came to install the fios "jacked into the existing Comcast cable and slowed down all the networks at once". Is there any truth to this? I don't have much knowledge on the subject and would like to know the pros/cons of getting fios along with the current Comcast wifi.

    Private Network / Bandwidth Dedication

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:32 AM PST

I work from home and there are other people on the internet at the same time. During the work day I constantly get disconnected from the internet. Sometimes the router needs to be reset and sometimes it's just slow/not working for a while and works again fine later. I suspect it's probably because my other roommates are downloading something. We are upgrading from a 300 Mbps account to a Fibre 500Mbps account (my cost). Is there any way to set up a private network (Wifi preferred) where my computer gets access to a dedicated 200MBps of the Internet? I would prefer if it could somehow work where only from 9-5 every week day, but not a requirement. The new router is called the "Home Hub 3000".

    Questions about Ubiquiti Firewall

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:04 PM PST

Hello! I have a Ubiquiti USG and I'm a bit confused on the Firewall features.

I don't have a lot of experience with Firewalls, and the most that I do is mostly Cisco ACL's and Palo's, and even that is very tiny. I have my USG and its mostly the default settings with some port forwarding's. The issue I'm having is a couple. The main one is, just trying to figure out what the best practices are for setting up the Firewall for multiple VLAN's. Right now, i just have the main LAN and a VLAN for my servers. I have 2 rules for the 2 VLANS. One allowing new, established, and related between LAN and VLAN, and another allowing established and related between the VLAN and the LAN. So far, it's working, but not sure if that's the best way to do. I plan to add in multiple more VLAN's as well, some with needing access to LAN, some to other VLAN's, and such. The other issue is trying to figure out what LAN In, LAN Out, and LAN Local, and the WAN ones as well, are. I found that LAN IN is where to put firewall rules for VLAN's, and WAN IN is for outside in traffic, but I'm not sure what the others were.

Any suggestions, or assistance would be greatly appreciated! So far I enjoy the Ubiquiti stuff, but I just don't have a lot of experience with it, nor firewalls sadly.
