After using Linux for more than a year, Windows feels like a breath of fresh air.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:03 AM PST

Don't get me wrong. I'll still use Linux. I like my free (both meanings) OS too much for me to switch away, but I had to use Windows for a good month or so, while I was too busy to fix my nuked Linux install.

It was breathtakingly refreshing. There's no debating on which distro to use, which DE, which release model, or which package manager. It's just Windows. Some might find that stifling, but for someone like me, who gets obsessed with every little choice, it's almost freeing.

Simple way to send large file p2p to a friend

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:26 PM PST

Skype, Hangouts and seems like many other programs have for some reason dropped this feature. What is a simple lightweight "chat" program we can both install, add each other as friends, then I can drag and drop him a large file

Does anyone know a way to reorder virtual desktops in Windows 10? Would be great to see this baked into Windows!

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:12 PM PST

This is one of the many macOS virtual desktop features that I miss, namely the ability to click-drag virtual desktops and change their order. Does anyone know a utility that can do this? I tried SylphyHornEx but it doesn't seem to work for me. Any suggestions appreciated, thanks!

Laptop started making weird screeching noise

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:34 PM PST

I turned on my laptop and all of a sudden it started making this noise like some sort of gun from a video game on maximum volume until I turned it off. I then restarted my laptop and it stopped making the noise. It creeped me out alot and I was wondering if there is something wrong with it?

AOMEI Partition PreOS mode taking too long to complete

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 04:13 PM PST

Hello there! So I did a merge partition on AOMEI my partition table was like this:

    ||16 MB FAT32 Empty partition || 738 GB NTFS Data Partition || 100MB FAT32 Partition||

The only relevant partition is the the middle one, 738 GB, that's where all my data is, the Windows partition is on a 120GB SSD.

I have in the 100 MB FAT32 Partition a Ubuntu Bootloader that's missing it's OS. I wanted to install Manjaro Linux to dual-boot along with Windows. So I merger the partitions to organize it better and also to get rid of the Ubuntu bootloader that were causing me trouble every startup.

The problem is that it is now taking too long, it's been more or less 30 minutes already and the percentages are all stuck, Total is at 88% and Current is at 62%. The only number that is changing is the Status, it went all the way up from 1 to 8 now. Should I worry that it is taking too long to complete? Or is this normal given the 738GB partition's size? Also, what does the "Status" mean? Will it finish only when it gets to 100?

    Tx in advance

(Win10) Games stutters for a few seconds after a video load.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 03:34 PM PST

First i would like to place my specs because i suspect thats the problem:

    Motherboard Biostar G41D36

    Processor Intel Core 2 Duo E5300 (2.6ghz)

    4 GB RAM

GPU Nvidia GTX 650 (1gb Ram)

I know this pc is toaster-tier by today standars, so i really don't play modern games as you can figure, but this stuttering happens even on older games. You see, every time a video gets loaded, the game will freeze for like a second. I notice this more in games like Mount&Blade: Warband where after you find any npc it stutters a bit (when it gets to load their animated face, you can see the still textures in the half second it takes to load) or when loading a village, or entering a fight, or literally any action where a new render is needed. As you can see it gets annoying after a while.

Then i have games like League of Legends, i usually play that game on 60 fps on medium graphics, but it takes quite a while to load, and it also stutters a second or two after the game starts.

Other games are affected by this, (Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines too, i should have way more than pc needed for it, but it stutters every so often) but those two are the most obvious.

I suppose is a RAM issue, or is something that i can fix on windows? I have been using ISLC and setting the timer to 0.5, polling to 10000s and flush/free memory to 1024, it has helped a bit.

    Trouble installing Windows alongside Linux

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 10:36 AM PST

I use and love Linux (EndeavourOS specifically), but there are a few games I want to play that are either buggy in Wine/Proton or don't work due to anti-cheat measures that currently only play nice with Windows. Originally I tried a VM but it can't play modern games, so I'm trying to dual-boot.

I downloaded the official installation tool on my sister's Windows computer, set to install Windows 10, 64-bit, which my computer can easily handle, and created a 90GB partition on which to install it. (The plan is to install in trial mode, and then once everything is working well, buy a key from MS).

Then I plugged in the USB, rebooted, selected the appropriate partition, and installed. Everything went perfectly, until the point where it has to reboot. Instead of rebooting into Windows or even back to the USB, it rebooted to Linux. A Windows installation was added, but if I boot to it, all I get is the troubleshooting screen with no actual solution available (that I can see). If I boot back to the USB, it just restarts from the beginning.

What I really want is to have both distributions on my boot menu with EndeavourOS as the default one (since I use it for work and for everything but a few specific games I play with friends).

Any idea why it's not installing properly and why it rearranges my boot options after I install, so that it launches Linux instead of the Windows partition?

If it matters, it's on an SSD, and I think my computer has UEFI + Legacyboot, but I can't log out to check because I'm working from home right now (I can check if there's a way to do it without rebooting my computer).

Does anyone use windows notifications? What makes them work for you?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:48 AM PST

I just realized I've never really used windows 10 notification tray. Do you? What makes them work for you? It seems most apps don't use it anyway, or there are too many random system things going on.

    Anyone recognize this mystery program?

    Anyone recognize this mystery program?

    https://preview.redd.it/pvsqftmas1x51.png?width=653&format=png&auto=webp&s=a8c8616b63688f06edad2bb9ad8bf0c33f4d95f1

Hi everyone - I keep noticing this mystery program when I look at the running programs on my laptop. The icon is too small for me to see properly, I can't find it in my programs list in settings and it just... disappears, every time I click it. Image search of icon online does nothing. I don't think it's malicious but I want to make sure, and possibly find a way to remove it.

So I'm turning to this community in hopes someone may have a clue - anyone recognize what this is? I'd be grateful for any help!

Will Windows ever fully support AV Receivers (and attached home cinema audio systems) as playback devices?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 03:38 AM PST

    By fully support, I mean:

Recognize the HDMI-connected receiver as an audio device, i.e. as speakers, NOT as a monitor. Issues caused by this include:

    • Needing to "duplicate" the extra "monitor" so the mouse pointer can't inadvertently leave the real screen, as well as some windows including randomly the explorer opening on the wrong, invisible screen.

    • Needing to make sure the receiver and real monitor share the same resolution and refresh rate to avoid screen tears

    • The above becomes an impossibility or exceedingly unnecessary expense when the real monitor should feature more than 60 hz and/or 4k. (Needing to buy a new, much more expensive receiver to support video features that are not needed because it is intended as a sound device only, if it is even possible to find a 144hz receiver, which I believe it is not)

    • Windows constantly forgetting the receiver and its configuration, making it necessary to reconfigure the sound device constantly (or needing to jury rig a modified hdmi adapter, tutorials exist but this should not be necessary)

Is something like this on the horizon, to anyone's knowledge? Or are chances slim the HTPC/Audiophile Gamer crowds will ever be a significant enough blip on Microsoft's radar to finally address this situation?

Will I have to downgrade to PC speakers (or to spdif, see comments) when I finally buy a 144hz 4k monitor, to avoid the above issues? Trading visual for audio fidelity?

    Haven't recieved Windows 10 20H2 Update Yet

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:02 AM PST

I have installed all updates and it says up to date *Important: 2004 version was so bad that my pc had to remove the update for the first 4 unsuccessful attempts and after i used sfc/scannow and DISM commands (cmd) i was able to install May Update 2020 However after it installed (5th attempt) one of the users won't open every time i tried to enter my pin it says preparing windows and won't open.. then i solved it after hours by deleting the account data ( had backups) then re creating the account and putting all the files onto it... So could that be the reason why 20h2 is delayed for my pc?

Help needed. Problems with touchpad and keyboard after clean install of windows on laptop.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:15 AM PST

I did a clean install of Windows 10 on my Asus ROG Strix G.

Everything worked fine. I installed all important drivers by Intel, gpu drivers and audio drivers.

But somehow my backlit keyboard doesn't work. The lights don't show up. The keyboard itself doesn't work and the touchpad doesn't work as well. What should I do to fix it? Also are there any other drivers i need to install on my laptop other than these?

Not sure if this is the right place for this but I need help bad. Cortana and ram clear up

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 10:46 AM PST

Okay so i've figured out that windows is actually insanely smart for technology and basically reverses anything you try and delete or alter after a restart (if you don't know what you're doing) aka me. When task manager is closed, cortana is running at steady 90-100 MB. As soon as I open task manager, I will see cortana running at 90-100 MB and then it will go back to showing me it's suspended. Which means it's not actually suspended, just suspended while im visually looking at it through task manager.

It makes rocket league unplayable, I stopped sysmain too for performance ehancements and it didnt slow down start ups at all so thats good but yes I just need help on that and antimalware bc antimalware is just completely stupid on a gaming pc. Shouldnt need it if you dont download anything other than steam games and pandora and also never use the microsoft edge right? Because it's never found any threats when its running 24/7 in the background at a steady 96-110 mb. Jus so much stuff about windows is annoying me right now but I can see the point in why they do it, just not on a gaming computer
