I want to learn Linux and do customisation according to my self.... Posted: 29 Sep 2020 05:34 AM PDT So I have been using Linux since June 2020 I think.... I have tried distros and now I want to go to a level higher and looking forward to you for help. I want you suggest me some books or website from where I can have knowledge of Linux from Fundamental to Advanced. It is my next step into Linux so please guide me. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 28 Sep 2020 06:49 PM PDT Exactly what title says. I am currently studying games design (using Unity and C#, although most prospective university courses use C++ and Unreal) and have been considering taking the plunge and moving to Linux, because I'm starting to get sick of Windows' "look at these third-party apps which we sell your information to" approach and the almost patronising style Microsoft have begun to use... I'd rather an OS where I can sit down and work without distraction. With the information of which languages I'm studying, would Linux be usable as the only OS on my computer, should I set up a dual-boot with Linux or should I just not touch Linux at all? We currently use Unity, Blender, Substance Painter and Adobe programs when needed, but with leniency to alternative tools where applicable. Being my main rig I also plan to use it for regular 'life' tasks and gaming, but I intend to use Proton and Lutris to cover most of that. [link] [comments] |
Looking for Apps to use with a Wacom Tablet Posted: 29 Sep 2020 08:50 AM PDT I have recently bought a Wacom Tablet (https://www.amazon.in/dp/B078HRR1XV) and plan to use it for taking notes. I would like to plainly scribble or import PDFs/PPTs and annotate them. I use OneNote on Windows 10 seems and its having good track pad gestures for panning around the document but such gesture functionality is absent on Linux (the web version). I cannot move around the pages at all. What good alternative applications are available. Or is there anyway I can get OneNote to work properly with my Trackpad? [link] [comments] |
I can't use head command on the directory /etc/bash.bashrc Posted: 29 Sep 2020 10:35 AM PDT when I try to do: head -n 5 /etc/bash.bashrc it give me this error: # System-wide .bashrc file for interactive bash(1) shells. # To enable the settings / commands in this file for login shells as well, # this file has to be sourced in /etc/profile. What does that mean? What do I have to do to be able to view the first 5 lines of the bash.bashrc file? If you know the solution, that'd be great. Thanks a lot. [link] [comments] |
error 2 (No such file or directory) opening credential file /sabnzbd/.smbpwd Posted: 29 Sep 2020 11:52 AM PDT I'm trying to mount a SMB share in ubuntu, but I keep getting this error. I've tried multiple ways like including /root/sabnzbd/.smbpwd in /etc/fstab, but no luck. I'm not sure if this is needed or no, but if I don't enter it in the mount section I get a different error about the CHID does not exists. I know this must be something simple, but i'm just starting off. etc/fstab

Posted: 29 Sep 2020 11:43 AM PDT I downloaded Anki via the instructions on the official page. So I first downloaded the tar.file, then I extracted it and finally installed it via make. Than I wanted to delete the software, so I deleted all of the files. However, now I can still start Anki by typing "anki" in the command line. Why is this possible? How can I deleted the software completely? I even installed an add-on, which I cannot find in my files, but is still working as well. [link] [comments] |
How to prevent machine from being unresponsive when memory usage hits 100%? Posted: 29 Sep 2020 11:12 AM PDT I have a machine that is has low memory capacity, about 4gb. Usually when I am developing mobile apps, I tend to hit 95% of my memory capacity and often everything would freeze for 5 minutes or more and the disk usage would go 100% before the OOM killer does its job and kill one of the memory hogging processes. Is there any way to configure OOM killer to trigger a little bit earlier, before my machine goes unresponsive? [link] [comments] |

Swapping to Linux from Windows for gaming Posted: 29 Sep 2020 12:04 AM PDT So I've been told by people that they experience better performance with Ubuntu and I'm considering swapping I have a few questions though, I really enjoy the stability, I can install anything and it works without needing too much of a workaround, and I've heard that many things don't support Linux so you have to set things up manually. This would be a concern because I tend to play many games on a rotation. My final concern is modding, I like heavily modding my games and in windows it's just drag and drop and it works 99% of the time, I really don't want something that is noticably more complex Any help is greatly appreciated :) [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2020 10:08 AM PDT Hi. I have an old laptop with only 2gb of ram and dual core. As Windows is getting slow on it, I tried Linux Mint which is quite good. I am new to Linux thing. Please tell if Lubuntu is more better than it in terms of speed and usability. Or do you suggest any other beginner friendly distro which is lite on resources. I mostly use it for browsing and occasional office work. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2020 09:55 AM PDT What are the advantages to each, what are the disadvantages to each, and which would be best for my needs? I'm using these for heavy gaming, and using virtual box to run some programs that don't work on wine. I'd also like a good gui without any customization since I don't know how to rice. Out of these 3 which is the best? [link] [comments] |
Beginner trying to install Linux on an external USB Hard Drive. Posted: 29 Sep 2020 01:36 PM PDT I own an iMac, and I recently have gotten interested in using Linux, went ahead and bought a 1TB external hard drive and I wanted to try elementary OS on it, which I know is Ubuntu based. I've gotten the installation media ready (which is a flashdrive). I want to leave my internal drive and its macOS installation completely untouched by the process. I'm worried though, upon doing some research the process of safety installing Linux onto an external drive can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. Erasing the internal drive or overwriting the bootloader are two mistakes I see occur alot. I would appreciate it if someone could help me achieve this. Guides I've found elsewhere were either very old, or hard for me to follow as a new user who has never manually partitioned a drive before. Thank you! [link] [comments] |
Trying to use Nvidia + Integrated Graphics Posted: 29 Sep 2020 01:36 PM PDT I'm trying to use Nvidia drivers plus the integrated graphic, the onboard video with my setup, but now I'm having issues just installing Nvidia drivers. I thought I was going to use nouveau with my iGPU, but I have to disable it to install Nvidia drivers. I had a two Nvidia GPU setup before, but I couldn't get that to work either. What do you guys recommend to get Nvidia plus integrated graphics working nicely together? Installed Calamera and it didn't install a folder to /etc/. Posted: 29 Sep 2020 12:43 PM PDT Hello there. So I was trying to install Calamera to create an installer of my OS and after I installed, I simply typed "calamera" into the terminal, but it said that that file was missing, this file was missing. After that I removed it and I got this message: [link] [comments] |
Error in no space left on device, HELP please Posted: 29 Sep 2020 12:37 PM PDT I'm a beginner using linux, and I have an assignment in building a linux kernel. For that I had to download kernel tarball file and unzip it (done). The second step was to get the file system Gentoo, however when I write this first command, I keep getting this error even though I have barely anything downloaded in this Ubuntu VM box. Any help please? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2020 08:47 AM PDT It is very common to have a second drive or partition apart for the main OS installation, so if things go down, your data is safe somewhere else. At least this was a very common thing to me when I used Windows. Can that be done? [link] [comments] |
G25 Force feedback direct control from driver Posted: 29 Sep 2020 12:33 PM PDT Hello, The problem is that whenever I open the menu, or close the game there is a chance that a constant torque will be "left" on the force feedback of the racing wheel. This is a huge issue, since the feedback motor might even burn if left this way for too long. I have tried to fix this by writing a small C program that clears the force feedback from the wheel. I used the API from <linux/input.h>, but the problem is that sometimes it works, sometime it doesn't. I also tried using the fftest utility which uses the same library. At the end of it it also releases the force feedback, which also sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Has anyone encountered similar issues? I don't have much experience working with device or event files, so I just copied those parts from the fftest utility's source. Could the issue be with opening the device file when some other program uses it already? Thank you for the help. [link] [comments] |
Installing grub to usb instead of pc hdd Posted: 29 Sep 2020 12:15 PM PDT Is there a way to install the grub bootloader of android x86 in a usb instead of the pc hdd Just like Ubuntu you have the option during installation to install the grub into any usb in the MBR and every time you boot you just plug the usb and select it in boot menu that way anything goes wrong windows is fine and you can just format the linux/android partition and reinstall it and windows isn't affected. I see a terminal (?) instead of a gui Posted: 29 Sep 2020 08:18 AM PDT I've always wondered this about our production Linux VMs at my company. We use VMware and all of our Linux VMs are centos 7. When I click to launch the web console for any of these machines I never see a gui like I would on my own centos vm. It looks to be a terminal. Black background and it says Centos Linux 7 (core) Kernel xxxxxx "hostname" login: When I stood up a vm on parallels for centos on my Mac it showed a gui that I can click around so I'm confused as to how they got this production vm to show a "termninal" view. Please correct me if not using the word "terminal" correctly Could some one please explain ? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Sep 2020 12:01 PM PDT I was planning on installing Linux Mint on my XPS 13 2-in-1, and dual-booting it with my existing Windows 10 installation. However, I got an error about having Intel RST enabled, directing me to this website. However, a) this seems risky and has a relatively high chance of failure, b) people are saying this method doesn't always work, and c) it would mean switching from RAID to AHCI, which I believe is less reliable. How risky actually is this? Edit: I found some threads, including this and this which have much easier steps to do it than the above link. Would these work? [link] [comments] |
