Urgently need a new laptop, Thinkpad E14? My Macbook finally died... Posted: 29 Sep 2020 11:03 AM PDT I need to buy a new computer asap and spent an hour or two researching the market, ending up with Lenovo Thinkpad E14 (seems available from best buy pickup). I also saw Acer Aspire 5 which looks decent but I haven't found a retailer for. Are these decent choices, and does anyone have experience with the Thinkpad E14? I saw a post and a few comments about issues in built quality and breaking...is this the case?? Should I spend more for Microsoft Surface Laptop? Thanks in advance My 2011 macbook pro, which I renovated with SSD and 16gb ram in 2016, died today. The screen glitches and and then is frozen; is this ultimately salvageable? Could it be a screen/graphics issue or a bug? I bought an aluminum "rain laptop stand" from amazon and feel like is the culprit. When I used it near my jbl speaker it seemed like the frequencies forced my computer screen to shut off. Two days later and I started getting these graphics glitches and it froze. I tried waiting it out but had to force restart and promptly started backing up files. This morning it froze after waking from sleep; another force restart and during loading screen it switched to what could be safe-boot or something, kind of went 8-bit for a second and then it booted up...once logged in it glitched and froze immediately. I forced shut down after a few minutes and haven't touched it since. [link] [comments]

Loud grinding noise from my laptop fan on startup that goes away after a few minutes? Posted: 29 Sep 2020 11:21 AM PDT I have a 15.6" HP, it's fairly new (less than 2 months), so I don't think it's dust or anything The noise only seems to be coming from one fan (on the left), I think it's towards the bottom to the left of the touchpad. I can reduce it from loud grinding to a different, softer grind by raising one corner of my laptop. I have an i7 core and startup is very fast, and this happens even when the cores are quite cool (around 40 C), for several minutes. It doesn't normally happen if I start the laptop from off, but only if I start it after putting it to sleep (like if I close the lid or something) I don't know jack about hardware so please explain things simply (or at least in detail) Should I just take it to a computer repair shop? Is it worth the risk of them damaging my new $1500 laptop? [link] [comments]
MBP 13 2017 ntb vs ThinkPad T490 Posted: 29 Sep 2020 10:43 AM PDT Hi, need advice. I have a one year old MBP 13 2017 8gb ram model without Touch Bar. Is it worth trading it for ThinkPad T490 with 9gen intel I5 8265u, FHD 250 nit panel? I use my laptop for general use: Mail (outlook), chrome/ff, power point, simple calculations in excel. Is the additional power of four cores chip worth it in my case? I am well aware that panel, touchpad and speakers are much better on MBP. [link] [comments]

Why is my Lenovo G50 laptop so slow? Posted: 29 Sep 2020 01:58 PM PDT Slow to turn on, slow to open new websites, slow to open new documents etc. basically with everything. Intel core i3. What other specs would you like to know? If I can't get this to speed up I'm gonna have to start looking for a new laptop for university. [link] [comments]
Posted: 29 Sep 2020 01:48 PM PDT My current laptop has just about died on me, but I'm a third year uni student and especially as a lot of my lectures are now online I need a good laptop to get me through this year. I need something fairly basic but which will have a good mic/web cam for online lectures, something which won't crash on me while I try and take notes alongside an online meeting, and with a decent level of storage as I need to write my whole dissertation on this thing. I'm a student though, so can't afford something too expensive (MacBooks are out of my price range! I'm thinking something max £400 if that's possible). Any recommendations? I don't even know where to start looking.... [link] [comments]

Posted: 29 Sep 2020 01:04 PM PDT I just purchased a T14 AMD and now I'm concerned about using it once I get it & whether or not this will be a persistent issue with windows 10 & thinkpad. I need windows for school. Is this issue as widespread as the articles I read make it seem to be? I really wanted a thinkpad, but this might be a deal breaker for me. Does anyone have this issue? What did you do? Windows 10 update, bad news for thinkpads [link] [comments]

How does my old laptop compare with what’s available now? Posted: 29 Sep 2020 12:03 PM PDT My old laptop was a 2013 MacBook Pro and the processor is "2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor (Turbo Boost up to 3.1GHz) with 3MB shared L3 cache". Looking at the specs of the current MacBook Air and pro: 1.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, 1.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, 1.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Does the quad core double the GHz making 1.3 effectively as fast as the dual core 2.6? Am I understanding this correctly? [link] [comments]

Any thoughts on Lenovo Ideapad S540? (Ryzen 7 4800U) Posted: 29 Sep 2020 11:24 AM PDT Planning to buy it for programming. Here in Kazakhstan it is offered at 1050$. Ryzen 7 4800U, 16Gb RAM, 512Gb SSD and 14 inch 16:10 QHD screen. Seems like a good deal for me. If you are curious, here is the website (it is in Russian): https://shop.kz/offer/noutbuk-lenovo-ideapad-s540-82dl000eru/ . 450000 KZT is 1050 USD. In other regions it is sold as Ideapad 5. Need a $1,000/$1,100 Laptop for Gaming and School (Graphic Design) Posted: 29 Sep 2020 11:16 AM PDT I posted this on r/SuggestALaptop but copied this to here to get more options. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: $1,000/$1,100. Are you open to refurbs/used? No. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance, Build quality/form factor and finally battery. How important is weight and thinness to you? Very important, need a lighter and thinner laptop, also I need a slimmer laptop and something more professional. Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Nothing more than 15 inches. Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere, etc). Also Steam, Epic Games, Battlenet, etc. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? Current generation Call of Duty's (MW, BO3 zombies, etc), Rocket League, Witcher 3, Other modern triple A games. At 1080p and want above 60fps at any settings. Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Backlit keyboard would be nice (RGB as an extra bonus), and an SSD. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've found some laptops in my price range, but am open to finding more options. HP Omen 15 - https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/omen-laptop-15-ek0019nr [link] [comments]
I'm looking for an HDMI splitter(?) for my Asus Zenbook! Please Help! Posted: 29 Sep 2020 10:52 AM PDT Hello, I have an Asus Zenbook, the one with the screenpad, and unfortunately it only has one HDMI port. I have two monitors that I'd like to hook up to it, one is just a regular monitor and the other is a graphics tablet with a screen, but I can't find a good HDMI that actually works. So far I've tried this one as well as this one. The first one just doesn't work with my laptop and the second one works alright, but it get super hot and sometimes has weird framerate issues which are pretty annoying. So basically I'm just wondering if you guys have any suggestions on products that could help me. And to clarify, I'd like to extend the screens, not just mirror them. Hopefully you guys can help me out, thanks! [link] [comments]
