Anyone one know how to stop chrome from draining so much battery?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 01:10 PM PDT

I have a new hp pavilion 15 and the battery dies after just 3 hrs. I'm the settings it says 70% of battery was used by chrome. How do I stop chrome from using so much battery? I changed it to not use during background but that doesn't help

Need help. Chrome book has been running slow, still in pretty good condition. Started freaking out when I tried to open two Google Meets at once with a few other programs running for school. Started making low hissing sound, and now stuck with this.

Does it make sense to buy an external HDD as a back up for an SSD laptop?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 10:41 AM PDT

I found myself browsing HDD external drives to serve as a back up for important files when I realized the SSD on my laptop will probably outlive the HDD backup. Does it still make sense to get? Reccomendations for external drive?

    I have a Lenovo Legion y540 with a 256GB Nvme and a 1TB 2.5" SATA.

Laptop boots up normally, after i log in, the screen goes black

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 01:54 PM PDT

Hey everyone, quick question. I just got this new HP laptop recently. its an HP-CS3075WM, and i put 32gb of ram in after i bought it. that was about a month ago. and just 2 days ago i went to load up my laptop, everything was normal, i logged in, it showed "welcome" for much longer than normal... normally it just takes me straight to me desktop. and then it went to a black screen. with a little research i found to hard shut it down, if it happens again, hard shut it down again. well after 2-3 times of doing that, it will load up correctly and seemingly i have no issues.

    so my question is:

why is this happening out of no where? i havent dropped it, i dont do ANYTHING on this laptop other than record music and listen to youtube here and there. i shouldnt have to hard shut it down 2-3 times just to get on it.. i feel like ultimately that is just counter productive to the laptop itself.

    thank you!!

I went all in on a Asus Zephyrus G14

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 01:39 PM PDT

My school sent out a surprise email saying everyone had to buy or bring in a laptop. Yes I know. No I didn't make it up. Yes a go to a private school. So me being the opertunist I am seized the opportunity to convince my dad to finally get me the gaming laptop I wanted. He said my limit would be 700 pounds as a sort of early Christmas treat. However I reminded him that my birthday present never came. It was cancelled and he said he would make it up to me. So today I pushed the button and bought a G14 with the ryzen 5 and 1650. I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for setup tips. Or perhaps another laptop. Thank you for listening to my ted talk

Thinking of building a low-end gaming laptop

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 01:33 PM PDT

So I have my gaming rig already built and paid for, etc. But I'd like to get a gaming laptop just for the road once in a while. But I can't pay for a new one. I'm thinking of buying a Thinkpad T430 or an Ideapad Y700, mostly used and probably broken, but working. Then replacing parts or upgrading where I can. Thoughts? I'm comfortable doing general hardware upgrades to a laptop, but I suck at getting cables in place correctly, like keyboard, touchpad, etc.

Are Dell Latitude E7440 laptops CPU upgradeable?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 01:32 PM PDT

I am wondering if the CPU is soldered to the bored all the E7440 models or if it can be upgraded.

Namely I'm wondering if an E7440 with an i7 4600u CPU can be upgraded to say something like a i7-4910m. Thanks for any info.

What do you guys think the performance difference between a laptop 2070 and a laptop 3070 would be?

I did a few calculations and came up with an improvement of about 35 to 40%. Worth waiting 6 months for?

    Calibrate battery quickly

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 12:59 PM PDT

So I bought this Dell Latitude 3189 2 years ago for my school work, back then it would last me a whole week. But now, I can barely make a day, and it still reports it can last like 10-20 hours (but in reality it can last like 2 or 3). I found out you can calibrate the battery, but if I do that it actually takes those 10-20 hrs it reports and I'm not gonna keep it on that long lol. I can't close the lid either cause it will turn on the screen (even if I turn that off). Does anyone know a way to quickly calibrate it?

ISO replacement Keys for Mid 2012 MacBook Pro

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 12:50 PM PDT

Anyone know how I might get some? I don't want to replace the whole keyboard, I just accidentally melted a few while installing a replacement screen and would love to get my top row of keys working again XD. Any help appreciated, including a better place to post this. Had no luck on r/Mac and couldn't find a dedicated repair subreddit.

Need suggestions on laptop models of provided specifications:

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 12:45 PM PDT

Processor : intel i5/7th gen or above, or any other good equivalent. Graphics card : 2GB or 4GB. Storage : 256/512GB SSD. RAM : 8GB or above. Screen size : preferably 14" but not more than 15". Lightweight and portable. Battery : half a day of battery life would be good. Touch : preferably, but not necessary. Usage : coding, running simulations and moderate bingeing. No gaming or too heavy stuff. Budget : 55k-60k INR. I have been using a Dell inspiron 5567, and now feel the need to upgrade. Please suggest models matching the requirements, it would be a great help.

Thermal Throttling issues, considering adding a little ventilation?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 12:40 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I have an FX505GT with I5-9300h and GTX1650. When playing games like Ghost Recon Breakpoint I see stats like the following:

    GPU 89% and 73C

CPU 55% and 93C, which intermittently starts thermal throttling.

I used to undervolt my CPU which helped A LOT, keeping temps at arund 87C maximum even when stress testing but Intel locked my core voltage offset with the last BIOS update and I can't figure out a way to roll it back.

I stupidly repasted it myself with Arctic MX-4 so my warranty is voided according to Best Buy. I've also cleaned the fans and heat sinks, redid paste again in case I did it wrong the first time. This had no effect.

Next I undervolted my GPU a bit (hoping shared heat pipes would cool CPU too). GPU temps dropped about 3C but it doesn't seem to affect the CPU temps like I had hoped.

In desperation I'm trying to come up with new ideas.

I noticed theres very little ventilation in the case, so I was thinking about cutting a few more slits in a few places. The case has a bunch of false slits that look like they would be ventilation points but they aren't actually open. My plan was to pick spots, maybe over the blower intakes, and cut just a few of those slits open with my dremmel.

Of course I'll remove the back cover to do this and will keep my machine clean and far away. But I'm wondering if anyone has tried this and can provide some info on their results, and also if anyone has suggestions of where to put the slits.

The blowers are about 2 inches below the felt pads I put on to lift the laptop off the desk surface for better air flow. https://imgur.com/gallery/fFe0V79

    Thanks!

    Worth it? - X1 Carbon 7th Gen

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 12:39 PM PDT

    Hey everyone!

I've been looking into buying a new laptop for a while now and just can't seem to make up my mind on what to get. I'm a computer science student so some power is needed, but not a whole pile.

I would get a MBP base model, but really don't want to wait for ARM when it's just a big questionmark. I was questioning what my alternatives were when I found a (pretty good?) deal on Lenovo's website for an X1 Carbon 7th gen.

    Specs are:

    i7-8565U 16gb DDR3 RAM (Not ideal that it's 2133mhz don't think?) 1tb SSD 2560x1440 display for €1650, including the 3 year warranty.

So my question is - is it worth buying a 7th gen X1C in 2020? Are there any big refreshes on the way that'll leave me with a healthy dose of buyers remorse, or is this a great deal worth snagging.

    Thanks for the help!

    Is it time to replace?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 12:36 PM PDT

My system is almost 5 years old, I bought it used and have owned it for almost a year and a half. It's running slower than when I got it, and some games are freezing up the screen, its taking forever to update, and im having trouble finding it online in general. Should I replace my old one with a new laptop? I use mine for schoolwork and for some light gaming like Warframe and League, but im thinking I should put her down

Help for gaming laptops and sales this month?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 12:33 PM PDT

(English isn't my first language so sorry for possible errors) So, i live in a 3rd world country where most laptops are horribly overpriced, my plan was paying a relative of mine (Who was supposed to live in the us till 2021) to buy one in black friday, ship it to me and then pay him back, but now hes coming home this month because reasons, and my budget is short (1000-1100$), in labor day are sales really worth it? Or what laptops could be good options at this price point?
