I think this variant of the envy 15 is available only in India (INR 1,20,000). I was wondering if this would be sufficient for some video editing and 3D rendering, both of which are strictly occasional. I will be predominantly using this for uni. Other laptops at this price are either too heavy, badly built, or lack things critical to me (such as the webcam on the zephyrus g14). Is this a decent choice? Are there any good alternatives?

Laptop for uni and gaming up to 600 USD

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 11:43 PM PDT

Hi. I need to buy a laptop for online classes, light gaming and watching tv series.

I am planning on buying the laptop on Prime Day so I guess even the 700-750 USD ones might come down to 600 USD ( wishful thinking :) )

    • **Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: ** 2300 AED (About 600 USD), country of purchase is United Arab Emirates.
    • **Are you open to refurbs/used?** No
    • **How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?** Performance, Build quality, battery life
    • **How important is weight and thinness to you?** Not very important
    • **Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.** 14 and above
    • **Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.** Yes to gaming. My previous laptop had a MX150 so something better than that.
    • **If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?** Low to medium settings. Mostly play CoD, Battlefield series.
    • **Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?** Nopes
    • **Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.** My last laptop was an i7 9th gen with MX150. I liked it a lot and could play most games on it. I have no idea about Ryzen Vigo etc. but open to it if it performs better than my previous lappy. Thank you all for your time.

Oh and I would like for this to be a bit future-proof, so should possibly last me for the next 4-5 years if possible.

    High-end laptop (no gaming)

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 01:34 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: US ($2,500) or France ($2,200) Are you open to refurbs/used? yes How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? build quality, performance and battery life are equally very important to me. Form factor unimportant How important is weight and thinness to you? Important, but not as much as build quality / performance / battery Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 15 to 17 inches Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Music editing (Ableton Live), Programming (web + music) If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? no gaming, just movie streaming Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? good keyboard, best build quality possible, silent, not a huge charger. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I've had MacBooks in the past and I'm switching to Ubuntu (or some other linux distro). I'm looking for the same build quality as Apple. Budget is not a concern (but installing linux on a macbook seems wasteful). I searched for high-end linux laptops but all I found seemed targeted to gamers. I'm curious about the Razer Blade. Are they hyped overpriced machines or are they worth the price tag?

budget laptop for an older family friend

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 12:49 AM PDT

Hey, I'm looking to help out a family friend who asked for a recommendation for a new laptop.

They are older and generally only use the laptop for its portability and to browse the internet/ online gamble. Their old laptop was a Lenovo with a touch screen so I would think they would appreciate a touch screen, though it's not a deal breaker if a laptop doesn't have one.

I'm thinking somewhere in the under $400 budget as their daily use doesn't need a whole lot of power. That being said they are fairly well off, so if there is a more expensive laptop with more quality of life improvements they wouldn't mind paying extra. For example, I'm sure they'd enjoy a 2-in-1 laptop tablet so long as it isn't too pricey.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

    under $400 though flexible

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Portability is important, and touch screen is preferred.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    Fairly important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

a 15" 16:9 1920x1080p would likely fit them the best.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Only web browsing and whatever program they use for gambling

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

    N/A

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Touch screen would be nice, 2-in-1 form would also be nice but isn't important.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Both of us thank anyone who read up to this point. Your advice is sincerely appreciated.

Portable laptop for windows remote desktop for wife

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

$800, but would prefer to not use entire budget if possible

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build quality and battery life are most important.

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Both of these are very important.

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13" is ideal

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

No CAD/video editing, photo editing, or gaming. The laptop is only used for opening windows remote desktop and working off of her work computer. She will only be doing light web browsing and maybe pdf viewing on the actual laptop.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality and battery are key. She keeps the laptop in her purse all of the time, so it will get knocked around a bit. Also looking for good battery life so she doesn't have to worry about carrying the charger with her in her purse all of the time.

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

My wife is looking for a computer that she can use for running Windows Remote Desktop to connect to her desktop at work. She keeps the laptop in her purse and carries it with her all the time, so it is important that it is rugged enough to get knocked around sometimes (nothing crazy, but things happen). Also looking for a computer with good battery life.

Non-gaming laptop for £1500 GBP or less

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 03:40 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      £1500 GBP
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Battery life isnt a massive issue as I'd be indoors a lot. I'd prefer a clamshell type laptop as I'm not a fan of the 2-in-1s out there.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Ideally, I'd prefer a lighter laptop as It'd be used all around the house.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
13" would be too small for me but otherwise, I dont mind.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      I am not.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      I don't plan on gaming.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I've had gaming-type laptops in the past and want to try a laptop without a dedicated GPU. in the past, the laptops I've had would have fans rev up loudly even under no discernible load and would be quite heavy on account of the gpu( and the accompanying battery needed). Generally I want to try something lighter/quieter. A good/decent keyboard and preferrably an IPS panel are a priority but things like touch-screen, fingerprint reader, ethernet ports are nice-to-haves that I can live without.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I might be flexible on the budget if there's a compelling reason.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
very, since i need to carry it around to different lectures in the future
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
gaming, mostly LOL, COD warzone and GTA5 online
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I wish i can play battle field V with a 60 fps at high or medium settings
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
nave to be business looking, no any rgb lights. As light as possible (under 2kg) and comes with a least 1 tb of storage.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I did look it up before i post this, right now i saw that Dell XPS 15 and Asus Zenbook 15 seems like the laptop i should go for, however XPS is quite heavy (the unlimte setting one is around 2.1kg as i remember) and Zenbook i dont like their touchpad (i hate the touchpad as second monitor design)

17 inch AMD laptop for around 1000€ in Germany

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 03:26 AM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

1000€ range but I am open to spending a few hundred more

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

      No

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance, display quality, build quality. I am a truck driver and I will be using it in my truck. Form factor doesn't matter. Batterry life isnt important because its gonna be plugged in all the time.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

      Not at all

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

      17 inch

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

I might occasionally use Blender, do some coding (i am learning both of those), gaming comes as a much less concern to me. Being able to run Witcher 3 would be nice, but not mandatory.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Witcher 3, 60FPS low to medium settings, but not mandatory.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

I want a good display in terms of colour accuracy and image quality, I am willing to sacrifice refreshrate. Dont care about RGB, illumination of any kind, but a nice and sturdy keyboard would be nice as I do type a lot.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am a truck driver in need of a laptop because I need a computer that I can use and put away when I am done using it because I am short on space in my cabin for a full sized desktop PC. I would like a laptop with good thermals and I really developed strong liking for Ryzen 7 4800H reading all the reviews and thats my aim. I will most likely do my shopping in Germany, but buying it in Luxembourg, Netherlands, Belgium, and Denmark is possible as well as stretching my budget a bit over 1000 euros.

Budget laptops with IPS screen + dedicated graphics card

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 03:06 AM PDT

I'm looking for a cheap laptop (preferably 700€ - 1,200€) and I'm struggling to find this particular combination, IPS screen + discrete GPU. When they have one, they turn out to not have the other. (Full form here)

I was tempted to go for HP 15-DW2026NP, until I realized the screen is SVA. The TN panel on my Acer Aspire E 15 has awful colors, I can't use it for drawing at all. The viewing angles are horseshit. But it's also old - have current SVAs/WVAs improved to the point of being bearable?

Just the same way, I was considering ASUS Zenbook 14 (which has IPS) but it only has integrated graphics. Actually, most ultrabooks are the same, decent screen specs but no video card. Is this how far I can get on this budget? I don't want external GPU either 'cause I'm carrying it. Can I even make do without discrete graphics?

I will be using it for:

    1. Digital art (clipstudio paint, inkscape, photoshop) - illustration & image editing
    2. Indie game dev (unity, godot) - mostly 2D, not physics-heavy
    3. Gaming - won't be playing recent games; lowest settings are fine

    Specs:

    1. Highest priority: Display accuracy; Performance; Graphics
    2. Medium priority: Durability; Cooling system; Battery life; Keyboard feedback
    3. Don't care: Touchscreen; Thinness/lightness/sleekness; Appearance/design

(I'm looking for an utilitarian device, for the love of god don't suggest me a laptop based on the fact it has RGB backlit keys or not, thank you)

Current laptop: Acer Aspire E 15 571G-5387 (i5-5200U / 4GB / HDD500GB / GF820M 2Gb / W8.1). Can do most of what I need but yeah, horseshit screen, and crashes on some really random tasks. Ideally, don't want to downgrade from this.

Possible choices (based on pricing in Portugal): HP Envy 13, HP 15-DW2026NP, HP Omen 15, Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, ASUS Zenbook 14, Lenovo Legion Y540, Lenovo Legion 5, IdeaPad L340 Gaming, HP pavilion 14, etc. Actually, some of these are much cheaper than the others, I'm willing to settle for the cheapest required to run the things I listed above.

Strongest candidates (suspiciously cheap): Lenovo Legion Y540 15IHR, HP Envy 13, HP Omen 15

    Thank you in advance.

RTX 2060 with 60hz QHD screen or GTX 1660Ti with 120hz screen

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 02:36 AM PDT

I'm looking to buy the ASUS ROG Zephyrus G14. Theres two configurations as that I listed in the title. RTX 2060 with 60hz QHD screen or GTX 1660Ti with 120hz screen.

I want to buy the laptop primarily for gaming, if i understand correctly the RTX 2060 is the better graphics card but a high screen refresh rate is best for gaming? Any recommendations? Would it be feasible to purchase the model with the RTX and attach a high refresh rate monitor if I run into issues with the 60hz? Theres like a £400 price difference (120hz being cheaper)

Lenovo Legion 5 or HP Omen? (AMD VARIANTS ONLY)

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 02:27 AM PDT

after months of research, last month, I decided to buy Asus G14. But after asking here, I realized that it was an overkill to my purpose. Some awesome redditors gave me Legion 5 as a suggestion and I really liked it (except for design :/)

After looking at legion 5, I also stumbled on Omen 2020 (I really liked the design and it's also 300$ more expensive) Please help me to choose one. Seems like Legion 5 does not have G-Sync does it matter much?

links of the laptops I'm referring :

    Omen

    legion

I will get these from US in November or December. So, I'm in no hurry.

Lenovo Legion 5 or Asus ROG G14 ?

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 03:36 PM PDT

As the title says, which one would you recommend all things considered?

    Specs:

    Lenovo Legion 5 15ARH05 - Ryzen 7 4800H/16 GB/512 GB/GTX 1650 4 GB - 15.6" Full HD IPS 1920 x 1080 $1000

    Asus ROG Zephyrus GA401IU - Ryzen 7 4800HS/16 GB/512 GB/GTX 1660 Ti 6 GB - 14" Full HD IPS 1920 x 1080 - $1600

Apparently the Legion offers 250nits and only 45% NTSC gamut. Is it worth the price going for the G14? The only thing that put me off is the 14" screen.

I am planning to use the laptop for both work/gaming and programming.

COMPARISON MSI Creator 15M vs PcSpecialist laptop

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 02:04 AM PDT

pc specialist (I selected RTX 2060 and i7 10750H) or msi creator 15M.

I don't know what to buy: I want a laptop with:

    • a lowkey look (not gaming laptop particulars) because I need to use it in university class
    • a GTX 1660 ti or RTX 2060
    • i7 9750H at least

I found these 2 laptops that I can buy for 1200€, but I don't know which is better: I like more the MSI look, but it has worst cooling system (?) for what I have read online and it hasn't the numpad (I need to find a solution for this)

    What can you suggest me?

Another one thing: the MSI comes with Freedos, is it so complicated to install Windows and drivers?

What kind of laptop should I get for my sister? (For Xmas)

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 11:20 AM PDT

I recently got a job and am saving up to build myself a gaming pc, but I want to get my sister a gaming laptop for Christmas and need something that is cheap yet performs well. Can anyone help me?

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Anything up to $600 USD.
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Not sure what form factor is, but I think she would prefer it to perform well and have a long lasting battery while playing games and possibly editing videos
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I think that she would prefer something light and somewhat thin. But this is not necessary.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
She told me that she was planning on playing Roblox, Minecraft (With mods) and edit videos with the laptop.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Minecraft, Roblox, and probably other games that younger kids like. At least 60 fps with advanced settings, if not, then regular settings. I'm not sure if mods would be really taxing on the laptop.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I would prefer for it to last a long time as I'm definitely not gonna buy another one anytime soon lol. Also, I think she would like it if it had a RGB keyboard and a touch screen, yet are also not necessary. (I think it'll be fine as long as the laptop runs well when running Minecraft with mods or editing videos.)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I am willing to raise the budget to around $800 USD if necessary. Thank you for your time if you read this all and commented a recommendation!

Nintendo Switch Streaming Setup (Laptop) – Please help

    Posted: 29 Sep 2020 01:07 AM PDT

Hi, everyone. I would like to ask for some help regarding what I would need for streaming Nintendo Switch gameplay. I especially need help with regard to a computer hardware/software. I have roughly the equivalent of US$2,000 for a budget. For personal reasons, I would prefer a laptop as I need to be portable. Is there anything I can buy off the shelf to get started? I have heard I need a capture card as well. I am in Taiwan, near an electronics district, so I should be able to find stuff easily enough. I understand a camera, light, headphones/mic, etc. Really need help understanding what the computer would need to get me up and running. Specifications and/or model specifics would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      NTD 60,000 - Taiwan (roughly USD 2,000)
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No, not really
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      Quality and performance
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
I suppose the thinner and lighter the better.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      I suppose about 15" (38 cm)
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Nintendo Switch streaming and video editing. If there are any programs/software you can recommend, it would be much appreciated.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Hollow Knight, Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Minecraft. Setting and FPS: not sure.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      Nothing specific.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
This is a starter pack, so do not necessarily need to blow the whole budget. However, I am looking for quality over price.

      nope

somewhat, I just want it to be portable

      15 inch or lesser

I'm not much into gaming but I MIGHT do a bit of graphical rendering in a few years(2ish)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
hmm, I just want to play games that aren't THAT graphically hungry. medium and 120 would be good or 100ish.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
nope but thunderbolt3 with charging features will be necessary if it doesn't have a good battery life(5-7 hours or normal tasks)
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I want it to be "future proof" since I will be using for a long period of time(3-5 years)

Simple laptop for my elderly mother

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 02:19 PM PDT

My mom has finally agreed to get a laptop so she can do some basic stuff on the internet so I want to surprise her with one but am unsure of what to get her.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
In the US. I'd like to keep it under $300, but I could go up to $500
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      Yes
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      • A battery life of at least 2 hours would be great
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      • My mom will only be moving the laptop around the house, so not terribly important. But with that being said, she is a disabled elderly woman so nothing overly heavy or bulky.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      • Anything 15" +
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      N/A
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      • As long as it can run candy crush, my mom will be happy.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • A numeric keypad is a must, she refuses to use a laptop without one. A computer that is over-all user friendly would be great.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      • Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it!

    [Intel i7 (8-9gens) + 2070/2080] or [Ryzen7 4800h +1660Ti] for After Effects and Premiere Pro

    Posted: 28 Sep 2020 12:11 PM PDT

Hello everyone! I'm going to buy a used laptop from Ebay. Cannot decide what to buy.

I play games like Rainbow Six Siege sometimes, but GTX1650 is enough for me (was testing it earlier).

Now I'm looking for a laptop to use it in After Effects and Premiere Pro, 2D animation graphics mostly. I've read lot of articles and comparisons between new i7 10750h and r7 4800h, and 4800h is a real monster in multi-core and a bit smaller monster in single-core. Budget is about $1000.

    Laptops I'm considering are:

    1. HP Omen 15 2020 with R7 4800h + 1660Ti.
    2. Acer Triton 500 / Razer Blade or smth else with i7 (8750h or 9750h) + 2070/2080 (usually Max-Q).

I don't care about RAM or SSDs cuz I'm going to upgrade it anyway. Just want to know, which configuration is better for After Effects and Premiere Pro. Is it worth going with slower CPU (i7 6-core vs r7 8-core) to get better GPU, or is it better to have better CPU and 1660Ti will be enough for AE & PP?

hey guys so I'm currently in the process of saving up 1k for a new laptop and I'm stuck between buying a refurbished early 2015 MacBook pro 13" i7 or the hp envy 13 i7. I'm going to be using it for mostly producing music and editing basic videos. I produce on ableton and edit my videos on sony Vegas. I've done extensive research on both, and I was so leaning towards the hp envy until I came across shit loads of complaints about the hinge breaking on previous 2017/18/19 models or fucking up 8 months after use or a year after use. I'm saving up and paying for this laptop all myself so I really want it to last at least 4 years, I've gotten 5 years out of my hp notebook 15 i5 and it was 700 quid at the time!! I'm on the fence about buying a refurbished mac book that is quite old as well, also because I've heard the mac os is very protected, and free plugins for daw are less likely to be available for Macs and I don't have the money to buy a lot of plugins for production (I'm a student lol) also I use a cracked vers of sony Vegas which I know is bad but again I'm a student lol. ideally I don't want to spend more than 950 pound on this laptop.

can someone more educated than me on this pls help me out, any opinions are welcome tbh having such a hard time making a decision.

    thank u <3333
