Best distro for students that do not know how to read?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 09:19 AM PDT

    Hello!

I work for an ONG in a developing country. We are giving computers to students so that they can continue studying during the pandemic. Right now, we are working with Zorin Education.

Anyone has another recommendation? It is important that the distro is also fully available in Spanish.

    Thank you for your time!

Want to make sure I won’t destroy GRUB by replacing Debian with Ubuntu

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 02:31 PM PDT

    https://itsfoss.com/replace-linux-from-dual-boot/

I'm going to use this tutorial to replace my installation of Debian (dual-booted with Windows 10) with Ubuntu by installing Ubuntu "normally" on the original Debian partition. My only concern is with the important GRUB files are located on Debian install (/boot/grub/).

Ubuntu will do a fresh install of GRUB, right? I'm just worried that "Debian's" GRUB will still be the boot loader on the system, look for Debian's /boot/grub/, fail, and then break.

    Thanks in advance!

I need help running an executable on my mounted drive.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 10:43 AM PDT

So I was trying to make a .sh to run but doing the command "chmod +x" still has vim open it. I'm trying to do it on a second hard drive I have formatted to ext4 on ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS. I tried running the .sh on my desktop but it didn't open at all (I imagine because it opens other programs that aren't on my desk top). Idk what to do here, any help would be appreciated.

Ethernet interface always DOWN, even when cable plugged in (Arch and Void)

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 12:20 PM PDT

    Hello again!

I've been trying to install Void on a spare computer I have, but the device enp0s10 is always showing link down when I enter ip a.

After battling with that, I tried with Arch instead, and it turns out that has the same issue.

The cable is plugged into the Ethernet port on the motherboard, and the other end is plugged into my switch. The switch also shows no active link.

    Any advice? Thanks!

I'm on a live USB. Not installed yet.

    When I enter dhcpcd enp0s10, I get:

enp0s10: waiting for carrier timed out dhcpcd exited

    ip addr enp0s10 shows:

    2: enp0s10: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc fq_code1 state DOWN group default qlen 1000 link/ether XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff # XX = redacted MAC

    I have fixed it!

My NIC was reporting Gigabit capability but it doesn't actually support Gigabit.

I used ethtool to turn off autoneg (auto-negotiation), set speed to 100Mb/s, and duplex to Full: ethtool -s enp0s10 autoneg off speed 100 duplex full

Then I just used ip a to check the new status of the device and...

    2: enp0s10: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> # ... inet 192.168.1.15/24 brd 192.168.1.255 scope global dynamic enp0s10

... Yes, it even automatically got a DHCP address.

Linux is awesome (but Reddit formatting isn't... at all)!

How do I open an RMAN log file?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 02:52 PM PDT

    I suck at opening logs...

    This is the file path;

    /dumps/tmp/this-random-host/more_words_rman.log

    I cd to

    /dumps/tmp/this-random-host

but I can't open the file....

    Normally I would just;

    this-random-host/more_words_rman.log | less

or grep and then pipe to open it but when I do this it opens up blank. SOS

Best window manager for a noob?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 02:35 PM PDT

I've been using distros with XFCE ever since I started using Linux. I love how little resources it uses up. I've heard that tiling window managers are also pretty lightweight. What would be a good window manager for someone who has never used one to try?

What to do with all the free space on the Desktop? (Ubuntu 20.04)

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 08:36 AM PDT

Comming from windows (duh!) I was used to have several icons for applications, files, directories and other stuff right on the desktop.
Now in Ubuntu I get quite used to work with the dock or search in overview for my applications (without starting Edge whenever I enter something with a typo, whooho!).

The thing is: this left the actual desktop quite untouched, with still only the home folder and the trash bin on it.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy an undisturbed look on my wallpaper, but I'm just curious what you guys use it for? (or what it should used for?)

Would I be able to run docker in a windows vm?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 01:53 PM PDT

Hello, apologies if this is a silly question

I recently moved over to linux and have a question about virtual machines and docker. I already run a windows vm to play games (using gpu passthrough) and want to be able to run docker inside the vm. I understand I can run docker quite simply inside linux, but I'm currently developing a .netcore application and I find visual studio to be the simplest tool to do so and so want to run docker in windows. I tried installing docker desktop on my vm and I was greeted with an error stating "Docker desktop requires Windows 10 Pro/Enterprise or Windows 10 Home(19018+)"
I currently have an unactivated version of windows for the vm (this exists on an ssd which i pass through entirely). I am willing to purchase a code for windows 10 pro and upgrade, but want to ensure that after doing so I would be able to run docker desktop properly (without docker toolbox) on the vm.

Is this possible? any advice will be greatly appreciated

Is there a way for me to visually view the file hierarchy of Ubuntu and Red Hat Linux distributions?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 09:55 AM PDT

I am still in the process of learning Linux and I believe I would understand the file hierarchy system better if I am able to view a visual map of how the files are placed.

All my searches lead to just word descriptions and labels, no pictures or lines leading to other related directories.

Also: Are there any tools that I can utilize like BashCrawl? I like using that tool but I believe it is a little limited (maybe I'm not using it the right way?)

Any and all replies would help me greatly! Thank you in advance!

Dual Boot Windows & Linux Mint

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 01:25 PM PDT

Hey I recently got a brand new Laptop and installed Linux Mint 20 for the first time. I love it, but just find Windows better got video editing, gaming and streaming. During my Linux Mint installation I ended up deleting windows completely. I've come across videos showing people how to dual boot but most of the time windows is already the main OS. I would appreciate it if anyone could provide some information how to go about this. Thanks

My Plex server is freezing up. Can someone help me understand anacron? Ubuntu 20.04.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 12:06 PM PDT

The last log entry in /var/log/syslog before the lock up is:

    Jul 30 11:30:01 Hercules CRON[174053]: (root) CMD ([ -x /etc/init.d/anacron ] && if [ ! -d /run/systemd/system ]; then /usr/sbin/invoke-rc.d anacron start >/dev/null; fi)

The logs before that one are dozens of plex items all looking like:

Jul 30 11:28:04 Hercules Plex Media Server[173791]: Got nothing for: (TV Show)

I have no idea what this is. I assume Plex is trying to run a scheduled job, but how do I tell for sure? I looked at /etc/acrontab, and I saw in there 2 entries for cron.daily and cron.weekly, both with a --report flag, but there isn't a file called that in etc to read.

Where do I go from here?

    Installing Rambox

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 11:36 AM PDT

Hi! I'm very new to linux (got linux mint on my Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 a few days ago), and I'm having some difficulties with installing some programs. Currently I am trying to figure out how to install Rambox. I followed a guide and it worked but for an older version, so every time I opened the app it told me there was a new version available and sent me to the github page.

    https://github.com/ramboxapp/community-edition

I followed the instructions that it gives for installation on linux, but nothing happened. I followed the instructions for the zip package (I put a screenshot of the instructions and my terminal). Does anybody have any advice for me? Thanks!

    Grub can't boot windows

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 10:42 AM PDT

Grub shows both Debian and windows, and I can boot into Debian normally, but whenever I select Windows boot manager, it freezes. It does absolutely nothing, it just freezes. I've left it like that for 10 mins just to be sure, and still nothing.

    Debian Buster LXDE: Weather Plugin

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 10:25 AM PDT

I'm using Debian Buster LXDE and tried some new location in the Weather Plugin. Here are some interesting search results:

    • Paris

      City State Country
Paris Maine United States of America
    • Buenos Aires

      City State Country
Buenos Aires Arizona United States of America
      Buenos Aires Cauca Colombia
    • Amsterdam

      City State Country
      France
Amsterdam New York United States of America
Amsterdam California United States of America
Amsterdam New Jersey United States of America
    • ... etc ...

So, basically the Weather Plugin missed almost all location I've tried.

    QUESTION
Is this a bug? Or am I missing something?

    Looking for a screenshot tool

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 10:23 AM PDT

On windows I always used lightshot. I hit the PRTSC button and I got a cursor to select an area. Once I select I can add arrows, circles, text, etc. It's very lightweight too, the app is like 4MB. Looking for something similar on Linux. I use KDE Neon btw.

    Need help with wifi driver/settings

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 08:58 AM PDT

Hi, I recently purchased a high gain dual-band antenna (USB) for my Ubuntu system. I'm having issues getting wifi to work and I could use some advice in that regard. Linux drivers have been provided with plenty documentation (which I'm trying to understand), including an install.sh which I (think?) I applied successfully.

    I basically followed this guide:

    https://tuxbyte.com/how-to-get-your-realtek-rtl8111rtl8168-working-updated-guide/

    sudo ethtool -i enp1s0

gives me a similar result, so it seems like it works on the driver side, though I'm not sure what else I could do to find out if the installation was truly successful.

There are two main issues at this point and I don't know what to do next:

    1) The wifi adapter has a blue LED that should activate, yet it does not on this particular system. I checked all USB ports with other devices and they seem to work fine. The wifi adapter is recognized by a Windows system instantly, so it's working. Why does the Ubuntu system not recognize it?

    2) In system settings, wifi settings are not displayed, respectively it claims there is no wifi device connected. I assume this is due to 1)

    I'm on Ubuntu 20.04.1 64-bit on a Lenovo E530. The wifi adapter/driver is RTL88x2BU v5.3.1

I can upload the entire .zip package if that helps, it's roughly 80 MB files + docs.
