I’m 14 And I Want To Use Linux On My Personal Pc, What Should I Do? Posted: 31 Jul 2020 03:51 AM PDT I'm 14 And I Want To Use Linux On My Personal Pc, What Should I Do? Hello All! For a while now I have been interested in installing Linux on my personal laptop! I want to switch to Linux because I'm my personal opinion I don't really like Windows 10. (Bugs design etc) I have a few questions!
My laptop is pretty old, I don't really know the specs but I'll link the laptop below. https://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-Ideapad-310-15ABR-80ST.186978.0.html
I really don't want to mess up my laptop when switching so can anyone let me know what the risks are.
Thanks for reading, And I hope I can get it up and running and join this amazing community! [link] [comments] |
using a video card along with integrated graphics causes problems in Linux? Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:37 PM PDT Someone stated that it's normally better to use only one type of GPU in a Linux system, either integrated graphics alone or discrete graphics alone, but not both simultaneously, to avoid compatibility issues -- is there any truth in that? Posted: 31 Jul 2020 10:59 AM PDT I see a lot of people creating there own awesome rice, using a window manager and i was wondering where i can start doing that? If it would be of any help I've been using linux for a while now so I don't consider myself a complete noob and i can handle some moderate terminal tasks. [link] [comments] |
Wayland and Xorg. How are they different? Posted: 30 Jul 2020 11:24 PM PDT I just know that they are display servers. But I don't know what they do. Can someone explain the difference between them? And at what things one is better than the other? [link] [comments] |
What PDF viewer lets you read embedded comments? Posted: 31 Jul 2020 06:33 AM PDT I normally just use the chromium viewer. Someone sent me a PDF with highlighting and embedded comments. The "view comment" icon shows up in chromium, but it's not actually a link/tooltip to the comment. What PDF viewer will support this? [link] [comments] |
Can I install programs with the lite version of Zorin OS? (Also see in text body driver fears). Posted: 31 Jul 2020 02:42 PM PDT I've decided to set up my PC for dual booting as I've heard linux is less of a ram hog and this can help me run programs faster than in Windows 7. I've decided to go with Zorin OS lite and I have a question I can't seem to find when I tried googling; Can I install programs in the lite version? (more specifically Audacity) and does Linux come with basic drivers for audio and network? Edit: Here are the specs outlined; CPU: Pentium 4 @ 3.6 ghz, 1 core, 2 Logical cores Mobo: ECS P4M800PRO-M RAM: 512MB DDR2 @ 553mhz Storage: Seagate Barracuda 120GB 7200rpm [link] [comments] |

So I'm finally switching to Linux but... Posted: 31 Jul 2020 07:17 AM PDT hi all. Internet send me to this subreddit. Awesome name btw just what I needed 😁 So I'm switching to Linux cause I'm tired of windows crap but I'm still a gamer by night so I want to dual boot I know that gaming on Linux is better than before but I've opted for the dual boot solution anyway And I'm finding a hard time deciding how to do it. Searching online left me with this knowledge:
So I'm getting a knew ssd (120gb) today And I want both OSs on the same drive for better performance, with windows having most space to install games and I hope you guys can help me decide my partitions Tldr To recap I have * ✅120 gb SSD * ✅1T HDD * ✅500GB HDD I want * ✅Both systems on SSD * ✅no problems accessing files when switching OSs * ✅If posible: partition for /home because I read it's easy to distro hop that way. Hope you guys could give insights on my situation. Have a good one. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:07 AM PDT Hi guys. Trying to install Olive from AUR (using pamac) on my Arch/KDE system. I've tried both the olive and olive-git packages, but both fail with the same error at around 10%: I have qt5-tools and frei0r-plugins installed which some people in the comments of the AUR page said were required. Any ideas? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Install a USB Wifi Adapter in Zorin Posted: 31 Jul 2020 03:04 PM PDT Hello, world (again)! This is my last question of today, I promise. I am trying to install the usb 2.0 wireless 802 in wifi antenna in Zorin. I am having trouble installing the drivers (my antenna came without a CD, so I downloaded the drivers). I already downloaded the ISO and mounted it. It has several files that I do not understand. There is a file called install.sh that runs some weird code, but no UI. There is a folder that ends in .tar.gz. What should I do? Thank you for your time! [link] [comments] |
WiFi Not Working on Macbook Pro Running Kubuntu 20.4 Posted: 31 Jul 2020 06:19 AM PDT This is a new install on a Macbook Pro. I can use the wired Ethernet fine but the computer does not recognize my WiFi adapter. It does not even show up in ifconfig. I do not have much experience in this area with Linux so I am hoping that someone can help me. I do not know what information you need but I can provide more information if needed. Posted: 31 Jul 2020 02:40 PM PDT Hi everyone. If you ever wanted to give Arch Linux a try but found that installation process too intimidating, or you did not have the time to learn the whole process. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Installation_guide Then I recommend you have a look at the Zen Installer, a full GUI installer for Arch Linux, that covers partition of the disk, installing Arch itself, selecting a desktop environment, installing optional software, and installing the latest nVidia driver if you have a nVidia GPU. https://sourceforge.net/projects/revenge-installer/ I've also produced a quick video on the whole process if you want to see what it is all about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhqkjjirNOc&feature=youtu.be Of course, I would still recommend you still at least attempt to install Arch in the traditional way, at least in a VM, but this installer can be a time saver if do not want to go through that process. As always if you found this helpful, please consider checking out my channel and subscribing to support me. Many Thanks Ryan [link] [comments] |
No bootable device found for arch linux installed in an external hard disk. Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:37 AM PDT I have installed arch on an external harddisk. For some time after the installation it boots correctly but then when I try again after some time I am not able to find the harddisk listed in the boot menu. I did the installation twice and have the same results. Edit 1: I followed this video fot installing arch linux and everything went as expected but after some time, the harddisk doesn't show up in the boot menu [link] [comments] |

Stop sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade from updating grub Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:17 AM PDT Just a quick question. Running the command in the title updated grub and completely messed up my dual boot. Instead of fixing this the next time, how would I stop apt update and upgrade from updating grub automatically? Linux Foundation LFCS certification for learning Linux? First certification for a beginner? Posted: 31 Jul 2020 05:27 AM PDT Can the Linux Foundation LFCS be my first certification and introduction to learn Linux? Hello— I am wanting to learn Linux and figured if I am going to put a bunch of time and effort into learning/studying... may as well look at getting certified. I am a newcomer to Linux. I have taken a bit of the LPI Linux Essentials course to see if I was interested in learning Linux... and I enjoy it so far. I work in IT Support and recently decided that I want to level up my career and start going for certifications for both Cloud and Linux. Looking to add to my resume to advance my career. Would the LFCS be a good place to start learning Linux and get certified? I see the RHCSA get mentioned a lot - but for some reason I seem to be drawn towards the LFCS. Let me know your opinion, please! [link] [comments] |

Multi-monitor related question on Manjaro Posted: 31 Jul 2020 09:19 AM PDT I have a very old laptop that I have installed Manjaro on, in relatively new to Linux. I like to have my laptop plugged in, connected to an external monitor and close the laptop lid. This seems to suspend the device I've scoured through display settings and couldn't find what I needed, I'm looking for a "do nothing when the lid is closed" equivalent on Manjaro. I'm using the XFCE desktop environment. And to add to that is there a way to get multi monitor support like on POP OS, where you can hit a few buttons and move around the windows on the monitors. The reason I'm not using POP OS instead is because it felt sluggish and slow (the cursor would just freeze and lag sometimes) when installed on the hard drive( it was fine when running off of a live usb). Any suggestions or solutions to either problem would be greatly appreciated. I have tried updating and upgrading the OS. The laptops a Dell Inspiron 17r, i7 3612qm, 8 gigs of 2133MHz ram running dual channel, 128 gig SSD. [link] [comments] |
Home partition on a separate drive Posted: 31 Jul 2020 05:32 AM PDT My laptop has a 128 GB SSD & 1 TB HDD.I want to install Manjaro Linux on the SSD and store other data on the HDD. It often gets suggested to have a separate home partition. Can I create the home partition on the HDD, while installing the OS on SSD ?If yes, how ? What should be the partitioning scheme ? Or there's no need for any such procedure, and I can go ahead with all the default selections that the calamares installer suggests for a clean install ? By clean install, I mean no dual boot involved, Manjaro is supposed to be the only OS installed. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2020 09:10 AM PDT Hello All! I made a post earlier today asking a few questions about installing Linux. I've found that I am tied between two distros. Ubuntu And Mint Both are popular and accessible and I want to ask you all which one I should choose. Programs I use: Fl studio 20 Sony Vegas Pro Games: Garrys Mod Geometry Dash Minecraft Thank you all! [link] [comments] |
Changing location of a program? Posted: 31 Jul 2020 03:49 AM PDT I've recently installed Linux Mint, and I'm setting back up all my programs. On my computer, I have a 128 GB SSD and a 1TB HDD. Because the SSD is already about half filled up from Windows and Linux (using a dual boot), and that I have limited space there, I'd like to install my programs onto my HDD. How do I do that? Even a method to move programs would be fine. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:46 AM PDT Hi, i recently had a problem with my laptop, where it gave me a blue screen and told me that i ad an issue with my hard drive, but i dont think that the issue is with that however, i do think that its an issue with a driver from an antivirus that I had on my computer which is messing up my system, the reason i dont think it is an issue with my hard drive, is because i recently bought a usb with linux lite and am able to access the hard drive and have use the files on there, i just watched a video to confirm, my question is how to do i remove the programs that i think are messing up my system, they are avast and avg, whilst im booted in linux, as the computer crashes before windows has even loaded and then restarts I am currently using windows 7 (yes i now know this is outdated and needs to be upgraded, i got a load of shit from the techsupport live chat) and want to completely remove both avg and avast so hopefully i can boot up windows, back everything up and then install windows 10 if anyone can help that would be supper appreciated tldr - laptop running win7 wont boot anymore, crashes whilst on the loading windows screen, bought a linux lite usb and can access hard drive want to back everything up, and want to get win7 to boot so i can upgrade to win10 and hopefully keep the programs and files without losing too much thanks [link] [comments] |
