What type of laptop should I get

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 09:05 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I have a question that I'm not too sure about. Recently my laptop broke (issue with the screen) and I've been looking into getting a new laptop for a little while, and I'm not sure if I should go with a regular laptop, or a gaming laptop. Ideally I want to be able to do a mix of both work and gaming on the laptop. What do you all suggest?

Thanks everyone for your help! It's tax-free weekend and I should have asked a long time ago.

    HELP!

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 01:25 PM PDT

Okay y'all.. So I'm going to school in the fall to become an automotive service technician. I need a new laptop as many of my classes are online (fml) and need your advice. I need a laptop that can stream Netflix, handle tuning, stay charged for at least 5 hours of actual use and won't fall to pieces if it gets a little abuse. Suggestions? I'm in Canada and my current budget doesn't allow for more than $600 or so 😬

Dell vostro 7500/ inspiron 7501 heatsink design

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:34 AM PDT

I'm doing some researh on thia laptop, and i found something odd.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/hsjlv7/internals_of_the_new_dell_vostro_7500_2020_model/?utm_source=xpromo&utm_medium=amp&utm_name=amp_comment_iterations&utm_term=active&utm_content=post_body

In this post you can see it opened up, and the heatsink looks really strange. There is a row of metal "fins" directly on the fans, and a second smaller one near the exhaust. The exhaust itself is smaller than the fan. I'm worried the hot air could be blown on the internal part of the hinges, (there's also what looks like a display cable near the right fan that looks in line with the air coming fron the fans through the heatsink). Any ideas?

Legion Y545 buzzes when plugged in

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 11:14 PM PDT

Like the title says, there's a buzz that comes from the charging port when my laptop is plugged in. It also can't decide whether or not it is actually charging, both software wise and hardware wise (according to the charging light on the back). The metal piece of the charger gets extremely hot. Nothing looks broken, however I'm unfortunately aware that doesn't mean nothing is broken. Any thoughts? Google answers are quite varied.

    Laptop for Animation Production

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:13 PM PDT

    UK. Budget around 700-1100GBP

Hi - I'm looking for a supplementary laptop for my Wacom Mobile Studio Pro (cintiq/drawing tablet computer, all in one). it's a great machine and does everything I need to to, but I'm looking for something a touch more portable and that I'm less scared about knocking during transport. I consider that cintiq a desktop PC now, it doesn't leave my desk.

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

£700-£1100. UK - England (London) very flexible on lower prices

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Touchscreen not important, drawing screen a plus but only if incredibly sturdy, I have plug in tablets so it's not a priority. Good performance, doesn't need to be supreme. I'm looking at using a little lightweight blender, Toonboom, after effects and especially Photoshop. It's not my main work computer, just an extra pc.

A really good quality screen would be great, really good colours and clean crisp images - although the size of it doesn't matter too much. Maybe on the small to mid size for portability

How important is weight and thinness to you?

    5/10

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

Small to mid but not a deal-breaker

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light blender, medium AE (but not for rendering), heavy Photoshop, medium Toonboom. Games include Sims 4, shadowrun games. Again nothing crazy and nothing online (maybe the odd TF2 game)

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

I'm a casual gamer, as long mid-level games can play reasonably, I'm happy. Not looking for the best of the best for gaming.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Uhh.. usb/usbc ports. A good keyboard would be nice, with good feeling to the keys. No rainbow backlights

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I would like a good computer than can provide some work related features (2D background design, concept art, some after effects work, minimal 3D work) and play some games at a reasonable level.

It's the kind of thing where I'd like to have a laptop now because I don't want to use my specialised work tech to search and compare laptops and it's a bit more than my little phone can do. In a pinch I could take it to freelance jobs in a backpack but it's not my main workstation.

I've been looking at Dell, just because light search they sound good. I've never had a laptop, just desktop PCs with mild upgrading and then cintiqs and art equipment. Not looking for apple products either!

    TUF A15 ethernet

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 11:00 PM PDT

Hi I recently got the the TUF A15 and it's ethernet jack is a bit strange. When I plug in a cable, it does not 'click' and stay locked. That is, it comes out if you pull it. The internet still works.

Does your TUF A15 ethernet port click? Or is this everyone's problem? I have R5, gtx 1650 model.

is Asus TUF Gaming FX505DT-AL023 a good laptop? (for gaming high-medium settings)

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 04:11 AM PDT

I don't know if I want to give 100€ for a dedicated graphics card.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 02:54 AM PDT

I'm pretty sure I want to buy HP Envy 13 as I'm going to college next year.

There are 2 options for graphics: MX250 and UHD 620.

I do some light gaming and I think that the most demanding game I play is World of Tanks.

Is it really worth buing the MX250 option or the integrated card will be enough for me.

I don't mind playing with low graphics.

Did I just fumble my very first laptop purchase?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 11:08 AM PDT

I am brand new to PC's/laptops and very unfamiliar with hardware specs and performance metrics. Recently purchased a custom HP Omen X 2s, and as I've been waiting for it to be built and shipped, I've found myself getting paranoid over my choice.

Will it work for what I intend to use it for? That mostly being gaming, maybe music production and video editing... but mostly gaming :) as well as the standard work emails and stuff but that shouldn't be a problem, right?

    Here are the specs :

    1 TB PCIe® NVMe™ M.2 SSD 32 GB DDR4-2666 SDRAM (2 x 16 GB) Intel® 802.11b/g/n/ac (2x2) Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® 5 Combo(MU-MIMO supported) Windows 10 Home 64 ADV 6-cell, 72 Wh Li-ion polymer 15.6" diagonal 4K IPS anti-glare micro-edge WLED-backlit (3840 x 2160) Intel® Core™ i9 9880H (2.3 GHz, up to 4.8 GHz, 16 MB cache, 8 cores)+NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 2080 (8 GB GDDR6 dedicated)

I think I got all the pertinent information in there... any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
