Posted: 30 Jul 2020 12:41 AM PDT I'm an Accounting student looking for a laptop for university. Won't be using it to game or anything, really mostly school work, watching videos, browsing webs, and occasional video editing on Camtasia. Would love for this to last minimally 4 years to tide overuni

Absolute newb to pc and mother of two little ones. Posted: 29 Jul 2020 10:33 AM PDT Hi. Looking for some help if anyone is willing to take a minute. Husband and I have been saving for a year and decided we could spend $1,400 on something totally for ourselves. I decided to pull the trigger on finally getting a decent gaming setup. I need a laptop, with a toddler and a baby I need the mobility and my toddler gets scared by anything on the tv that's not cooking shows or her cartoons. I really want this pink gaming laptop I found on amazon but I'm guessing it isn't very good (MSI Prestige is the brand). Here's what I'd like to be able to play: Mostly old games: Chrono Trigger, Heroes of might and magic 2&3, Fallout new Vegas modded, Skyrim modded I'd love to be able to play Fallout 4 modded as well, obviously this would bring my price up. Again I have no clue what I'm doing, I've been a Mac/Nintendo console gal forever. Any tips or even a detailed list of what to buy would be so much appreciated. I don't have a lot of time on my hands or the mental energy to really research this. Just wanna play in my limited off time. [link] [comments] |
Complete newb to PC gaming, need suggestions for a gaming laptop Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:31 PM PDT Hello everyone! I haven't really had a gaming PC or even a PC in general since 2012, and when I did have it at that time it was really just a computer that my cousin made for me as a gift. I had mainly stuck with Macs for the most part, but considering it's my birthday tomorrow and because there's so many PC exclusive games that I want to play I figured that it was about time for me to get one. If it helps, the games that I want to play right now are: Persona 4 Golden, Overwatch(as well as most likely Overwatch 2), and the Mass Effect Trilogy. To be clear, I literally don't know anything about computer specs. I'm a complete newb at this so I apologize in advance if I sound ignorant in any way. Thank you all in advance!! EDIT: My apologies!!! I didn't see the form!

Budget laptop for medium-heavy gaming, also usable for college (acer nitro 5 alternatives) Posted: 30 Jul 2020 04:17 AM PDT Been looking for a laptop that can run newer titles at good graohics at decent framerates. Also preferable if it has a refresh rate of 144 hz. But i also need to take it to university and use it for some officework so since I'll be travelling with it and sometimes tend to be a bit clumsy, it needs to be a bit durable which i know is hard to grt with budget laptops with high end specs since one of those is usually the tradeoff for the price cut. I settled first on the hp pavilion gaming laptop, but the major downside that made me reconsider it is the hinge it has that looks incredibly weak. So the next contender was the acer nitro 5, particularly the 2020 variants. It has even better specs than the pavilion, hinges that look a bit stronger, and its not that flashy gaming laptop with a rainbow orgy on its lid, which is perfect. But I'm starting to reconsider that too because it looks very plasticky and easily damagable, and i dont know if that risk is worth taking , but i cant find a reasonable alternative In a similar post to this i found people reccomending the dell inspirion 15 7567, since it has slightly weaker hardware but seemingly a more durable body. But the problem is that laptop is turning out to be a bit difficult to find in my area for that price. So are there any other suggestions you guys have? My budget is somewhere around 750-800 $ , with which I can get the nitro 5 2020 with i5 10th gen and a 1060ti, which is pretty incredible . But like i said, a bit too fragile. (However i haven't specifically been able to find people saying the 2020 version is fragile too, maybe they made it more durable over the years? Or so I'd hope) [link] [comments] |

(India) Laptop for CS around ₹1 lakh. Posted: 30 Jul 2020 12:07 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: Around ₹1 Lakh Are you open to refurbs/used? No How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Performance and then Battery Life How important is weight and thinness to you? A lightweight laptop is preferable Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. Less than 14 inches Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Honestly I don't know about the CS courses but should be good for coding and CAD If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? I am not a gamer Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? Probably good with ports and a decent keyboard Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. Should be able to double boot. [link] [comments] |
Looking for a laptop for college Posted: 29 Jul 2020 09:44 PM PDT I am going to school for Environmental Science. I am mainly going to be using it for Microsoft office, browsing, probably some science applications (nothing crazy like matlab, CAD or programming). I would like to have a laptop with a 13-14" screen, compact and relatively thin/lightweight. I'd like to have a decent looking display that won't drain the battery or cause ghosting. I'm looking for one with 16gb of ram and 512gb for storage. A battery life from 7-9 hours would be nice. As far as processors go, I'm good with an i5 10th gen or a recent i7 too. I almost was sold on a lenovo thinkpad carbon x1 7th gen with an fhd display, but apparently there is a lot of ghosting that happens. I want to get my money's worth and if it already has an issue like that, it's not worth it to me. I do like the idea of thinkpads but am open to others brands as well. [link] [comments] |

Small form factor with light gaming and long battery life $1000 Posted: 29 Jul 2020 06:40 PM PDT
I am looking for something small. I am typing this on my alienware 13 r1. I was toying with getting an alienware 13 r3 with oled as a nice upgrade, but battery life is an important factor if I can manage it. I was looking at the XPS 13 and 15 but really don't feel confident on their ability to do even light gaming like what I do. The Asus g14 is a sweet set up but is a little tight on my budget and mostly out of stock. If there is anything in competition with the Asus g14 or the alienware 13 r3 but with better battery I would be very interested. Not essential, but playing into the battery life and all, I would prefer an AMD chipset, but I am in no way hard pressed on it. Edited: I forgot, I use/will use my laptop in my vehicle a lot for work, so on a bright day they can suck to work on. If possible I need a higher screen brightness to compensate this purpose. Thanks [link] [comments] |
Linux laptop for Math simulations and Software Dev Posted: 29 Jul 2020 06:30 PM PDT Looking to get a new laptop for software dev. and math software simulations. Wanting to run Ubuntu, pretty keen on the Precision 5540 Mobile Workstation from Dell (it's on a good sale at the moment). I think I would get better performance from the Ubuntu preinstalled option too (as opposed to getting a Windows machine and dual booting)? LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Specs of the Precision 5540 Mobile Workstation configuration I'm looking at: 16GB, 1x16GB, DDR4 2666MHz Non-ECC Memory NVIDIA Quadro T1000 M.2 256GB PCIe NVMe Class 40 Solid State Drive Ubuntu Linux 18.04 Intel Core Processor i7-9750H (6 Core, 12M Cache, 2.60GHz up to 4.5GHz Turbo, 45W) [link] [comments] |
Lenovo Legion 5 Ryzen 5 4600h or Ryzen 7 4800h? Posted: 30 Jul 2020 01:57 AM PDT Hello! I've been looking for a new laptop the last couple of weeks and, given the fact that in my country the retailers haven't opted for many brands of laptops which have the ryzen 4000 series, I am limited to only a few options. The laptop should help me run the 2020, 2021 launched games (not ultra settings, but medium, and low settings for the next year ones) and go through some programming courses including machine learning, neural networks, ai and I'm aware of how some tasks I'll be assigned will require gpu performance, but I don't think I'll need the gtx 1660 or the rtx 2060 for the work I'm going to have, especially because I am planning on using cloud services anyways. The two options I've settled for are the two variants of Lenovo Legion 5, one with the 4600h cpu, and gtx 1650 gpu and the other with 4800h, and 1650ti, both options having 16 gigs of ram (which sadly can't be upgraded to more than that). I guess the gpu will certainly bottleneck the cpu in intensive assignments (the ones which will require gpu heavy duty ofc), but for two to three years it's gonna do fine. In addition, the 8 cores will surely come in handy in cpu intensive programming projects, but I'm not sure if this justifies the acquisition of the 4800h laptop. The price difference between the two is almost 150$, the lower performance laptop being offered at 780$ (tax included). Which one should I go for? Edit: I forgot to mention that both laptops come with the 300 nits 144hz displays. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 30 Jul 2020 01:49 AM PDT I haven't had a "gaming" laptop or desktop since 2011 and I want to upgrade from my work laptop which has mainly been used for writing. College, Video Editing, Coding Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:21 PM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE
Context: Using the Surface Pro 3 since 2014 and planning to get an upgrade this Fall. Love the portability and pen input. Now: Sadly, I have always had problems with the Surface Pro, and a lot of people had them too. I don't know if I have much confidence left on the Surface line. Context 2: Using laptop for daily college work (CS major, so mainly coding). Would do some video editing, so probably need to consider a laptop with good CPU and RAM. Graphics is prob not a problem since I am not exporting in 4K. Would also connect to a monitor when I am at home. Budget: < $ 1,500. Looking for a reliable laptop. Am not a fan of new or low popularity brand just because of support issues. Thinking of: Dell XPS, or Surface Laptop/Pro. Open to any more suggestions. Does anyone has had problems with XPS laptops? I heard they are very prone to hardware problems as well. [link] [comments] |
