    Home Networking Need new router

    Need new router

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 04:20 PM PDT

    heya folks,

I gotta send back my TM-AC1900 as t-mobile has decided they want it back. I'm looking to upgrade to something that is future-proofed. At the moment, I live in a smaller ~1200sqft home but there's potential I'll buy a home in the next year that is between 1700 to 2600sqft depending how much I wanna stretch the budget.

I game and I'm currently on gigabit. I'll be moving to a place that doesn't have gigabit (probably) but I'll be trying to get gigabit as soon as humanly possible.

What does Reddit recommend? At the moment, I'm looking at an Archer A9 or an AmpliFi HD Mesh Router. I don't have a preference for brand at all, albeit I'm used to Asus (and never figured out how to make its QoS work).

edit: Extra info - I hardwire my desktop, but my laptop, consoles, and phone(s) are all wireless. There are at least two other hard-wired desktops on my current router. One games, the other performs business.

Files getting corrupted over ethernet but not wi-Fi.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 05:39 AM PDT

    Hello,

TL;DR: I copy 8-60gb sized files from one computer to another over ethernet->router->ethernet. It adds corruption. examples: https://imgur.com/a/GDOMdKL

I record every time I play a game. I play on my main computer and record the footage, audio, and microphone on another, by using an Elgato HD60s and OBS (irrelevant, as it turns out).

Couple of weeks ago I started noticing graphical corruption in the videos while editing on my main computer.

At first I obviously thought it was OBS or the Elgato that was adding the corruption somehow. (either through busted settings, or busted hardware) I used another computer with a fresh install of windows 10 Pro to record instead. still the same problem.

I figured what caused it when I accidentally copied the same file several times... and the resulting copies all had corruption at different points of the video. Also this didn't start happening until I got sick of the slow Wi-Fi speed and switched to Ethernet cables.

    Here's four screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/GDOMdKL
(screenshots of originals taken on recording computer, screenshots of copies taken on the main computer).

The corruption increases in scale when the network gets a work-out (uploading/downloading a large file to/from the internet).

    Things I've tried (and result):
    1 Another computer (Still happens)
2 Changed to a newer router. (it happens less often)
3 Different ethernet cables. (still happens)
4 Moving with USB HDD. (solves it, naturally, but doesn't feel like a proper solution).

What I think can have done it... I had a lot of problems getting the computers to see each other over the network... I searched the net for solutions, as you do... and did everything they told me to (within reason)... didn't work. Eventually I just gave up and linked directly to folders through File Explorer's "Add a network location". which is working... except for the corruption-issue.

    Thank you for reading.

The closed I am to the AP I can get roughly around 400 mbps down however a floor down passing through just timber I am getting 70 and a floor up again passing through timber I am only get 20 (after tweaking some settings)

I have tweaked the settings ie selected certain channels change the bandwidth etc but not much improvement. Any other changes I can make please?

    2 cat3 jacks wired with cat6

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 02:11 PM PDT

I moved into a new house and an electrician did the networking (ugh). He used cat6 everywhere and punched the jacks down as cat3. There is a jack up high on the wall and down low on the wall. I'm guessing this would be for if you mounted a tv. The bottom jack is wired with both cables going into it so that it feeds the top jack.

Is it possible to do the same but punched down as cat6? Or would I need to punch it down as two separate jacks with a wire/ miniswitch feeding the top jack in order to keep gig speed?

BEST router and modem - heavy use at home

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 06:57 PM PDT

We have had so many connection issues since the start of March and really need to get our problem fixed. We have a long C shape house on one story, which makes the wifi very unreliable across the house. What equipment would you recommend if we were to just start over? Our current router and modem are about 4 years old, but were still considered quality. We are looking for the most reliable system due to the number of people that need to be online for hours a day (kids online school, gaming, adults working etc). We are not as concerned about the cost - we are just concerned about getting this system stable since school is starting next week. My husband is fairly tech savvy and claims nothing will make this better short of running a ton of wires. Throw me your suggestions so I can brag that I found a solution on this forum!! lol :)

Product Recommendation request (Is Ubiquiti 'worth it')

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:10 AM PDT

I'm looking at re-doing my home network and looking at getting the opinion of this sub. I have an aging TP-Link router and I'm looking at replacing it. I've seen the Ubiquiti Unifi gear recommended a lot and I was wondering if the extra cost of that gear would be 'worth it' to me over a more consumer oriented product offering like the Nest Wifi.

    Current Situation:

I have gigabit fiber internet from AT&T. I live in a 2 story, 2K sqft home. I have a couple of dedicated Cat5e runs for the office, for my TV, and for my NAS. Other than that everything else is wireless. My wife and I are both working from home full time for the foreseeable future and all of our media comes over the internet (YoutubeTV, Netflix, etc). Most importantly, I currently have space in my detached garage which I've converted into an office that is not covered in my existing home network. This detached garage is about 150' from my house.

    Current Router:

I have an Archer C9 which has performed reasonably well. It covers 95% of my 2000sqft house. In some of the far flung corners of my house my throughput drops considerably. It also has no way to reach my detached garage. I tried a couple of different wifi extenders but they managed 10-15 mbps at best (if they worked at all).

    What I want:

I want a home networking solution that gives me decent speed throughout my entire house, doesn't require random rebooting, and has the capacity to cover my detached garage office. The Unifi gear looks great and I have my eye on a UDMP, a POE switch, and a few APs. However, this setup will set me back over a grand+ and I wonder what benefits it will bring compared to a product like Nest Wifi or Eero. Fast and reliable internet is crucial for our career now that we are WFH so I don't mind spending the money on quality gear if the value is there.

I need decent internet in my detached garage office. The lazy part of me hopes I can achieve this through some kind of wireless bridge. If I had to do anything hardwired, I'd be looking at laying down new conduit or pulling fiber in the existing conduit where the power is run.

TLDR; Please convince me (and my wife) that spending $1K on network gear is not dumb.

EDIT: Thanks everyone for the advice. I decided to just bite the bullet and ordered a UDMP and two nanoHD APs. I will see if this hardware will cover my need and will supplement it if needed.

TP Link router in “Access Point” mode

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:46 PM PDT

I just got an Archer C4000, which is essentially the same as the A20. My house has somewhat old Cat5e cables running to a few rooms and a Fios router in the basement. My goal is to put the A20 upstairs and use it as an access point. I also have my laptop using the same Ethernet jack so I would just plug it into the A20.

When I use the router as normal (just leave it in standard mode) , it seems to work mostly fine. However when I switch to access point mode , the WiFi works but the wired connections no longer do.

Is there some setting that I need to change or do I need to use a separate switch to run this in access point mode while connecting my laptop ?

supposed to be getting 600 Mbps but only getting 80-250

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:38 PM PDT

I don't understand why. I have wifi extender capable of gigabit speeds and it's literally the floor above my router, and it's connected to my PC via Ethernet, but I constantly get speeds between 80-250 on speedtest and latency is terrible. Sometimes it's perfect, other times its 100-500.

    Tests were done through speedtest.

    I disabled firewall, disabled antivirus

I tried to watch any tutorial I can on youtube, I reset my computer completely TWICE. I've tried the TCPOptimizer but it doesn't have much effect.

I have a pretty expensive PC that I built myself, and the motherboard is the Asus Maximus VIII

We've even replaced the router. And we've just upgraded.

2.4ghz and 5ghz wifi and same ssid ?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:31 PM PDT

So my friend recently got a dual band router and his wifi generates 2 ssids one of 2.4ghz and another of 5ghz . And I was wondering if it is possible for one single ssid to have both these bands and i would simply just connect to that single ssid and my devices would automatically switch between 2.4ghz and 5 ghz based on the signal ,range etc. Is something like that possible ?

Windows 10, adding networkcard (nic) as nic-teaming without getting a new ip etc?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 09:50 AM PDT

So ive got a 1000mbit nic on my motherboard now. Im looking to buy another nic for use in a pci-e slot.

My goal is to have more then 1gbit from my pc without investing in 10gbit throughout the house.

Is it possible to do nic-teaming with the new nic without changing ip or changing a bunch of stuff, such as private or public network and all kinds of other settings windows might want?

    Hopefully i explained good.

    Thank you

How much does it cost to power up a server annually? Specifically for gns3?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 04:36 PM PDT

So in case I want to set up gns3 on a separate windows server, how much would it cost annually? What would be the power consumption per year? Say if I use the server for 8-9 hrs a day at most?

Need some help choosing a basic home Mesh Network.

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 04:33 PM PDT

Need some help with choosing a Mesh Network.

I have AT&T Internet. Fiber to node, not to prem. I should pull around 100mbps.

I know it's hard to replace the modem since it's ADSL. But I want to at least improve my in-home WiFi coverage by going with a easy Mesh.

We have a 3000 sq ft home. Router will be on main floor in an office on one side of house.

I am not a heavy gamer. We do have a lot of devices connected including smart home stuff and an Arlo camera system.

I just want better coverage on the main floor and upstairs and to improve what i feel is a capacity issue with the AT&T router.

What do I need to focus on? 2x2 vs 4x4? The 801 stuff? Dual vs tri band? WiFi 5 vs 6? Built in Ethernet ports in the main unit vs using a switcher?

Weird Router issues - Help please!

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 04:32 PM PDT

    Hello /r/HomeNetworking

Hoping you can help me with my wifi issues! Thank you in advance for your help!!!

    Here's my setup:

ISP: Cincinnati Bell Fioptics (Fiber to the Home)

Router: Arris SBG7580-AC - I am providing my own

Devices: 2 phones (call them AP, GP), 3 laptops (WL, GL, AL) and one smart TV, and a printer which doesn't need to access the internet.

Issue: I can only seem to get 3 devices connected to the internet at a time. The remaining devices seem to connect to the wifi, but can't access any internet resource at all. I would obviously like to get all 6 of my devices + the router to connect to the internet.

The devices that are not able to connect can clearly connect to the WiFi. For instance the laptops (all Win 10) say "No internet, secured" and the TV says "Connected to your local network but cannot connect to the Internet. Check the DNS settings in the IP settings, or contact your Internet Service Provider to access the internet."

    My assumptions:

    • I am assuming it's not an issue with the number of devices. I previously used to have ~15 devices connected to this router

    • I am not using the "Modem" functionality (only the router) but that shouldn't be a problem.

    Relevant information:

    • There is absolutely no issue with connectivity speeds (Netflix/YouTube are fine) and I'm able to VPN into work

    • Using the Ethernet ports on the router doesn't help at all with the internet connectivity.

    • I changed ISPs recently from Comcast to Cincinnati Bell. Could there be some sort of legacy Comcast settings interfering...?

    • Something I noticed: each device that is connected to the internet has a different public ip (I'm looking at www.whatismyip.com) I would have thought that they would all share the same public IP. But maybe this is just a red herring...?

    • Another thing I noticed: if the device is connected to the internet, then I'm NOT able to connect to the router (192.168.x.x). Every ping attempt fails, I cannot open up the ip on the browser, etc. Conversely, if the device cannot connect to the internet, I AM able to ping the router.

    Captive portal security dilemma

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:15 PM PDT

    Hello,

I have a Ubiquiti cloud key gen 2 on my personal vlan but I have a captive portal for my guest vlan (a unifi captive portal). I have a pfsense router and I have firewall rules blocking guest to lan traffic. But to get the captive portal to work I need the guest vlan to be able to access the cloud key. I can allow the firewall to allow that to work. How bad would it be if the guest vlan had access to my cloud key? The cloud ket is password protected.

This is for a home network.

    Thanks for the help.

    Question about Comcast

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 08:15 PM PDT

We're toward the end of 'the line' for AT&T internet. 12 meg up and sometimes 25 down. Comcast keeps trying to sign us up but won't commit in writing unless we sign up first. Can we trust them to provide what they say they will?

    Multiple ISPs home network

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 12:33 PM PDT

We are 2 houses, I want to have a shared LAN to share devices and communicate between them (printers, NAS, file sharing, etc.), but I want each house to have its own ISP.

I thought about having 3 different subnets and 2 gateways:

Subnet 1: first house, using Gateway 1 for ISP 1

Subnet 2: my house, using Gateway 2 for ISP 2

Subnet 3: wifi for both houses + outdoor, using Gateway 1 for ISP 1

This is what I thought of:

    https://i.postimg.cc/9MhD95VW/home-network-cereal.png

    1. Would this work well?
    2. Potential weakness/issues?
    3. Could it be done better?

EDIT: I do not to use both ISP together, I want to keep them separated.

    Xfinity Gateway Problem?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 03:54 PM PDT

Let me start by saying I currently have the xFi gateway. Before this we had the Arris modem that came with Xfinity. We connected a Netgear Router and the entire home had great signal. But when we upgraded to the xFi gateway we decided to keep the Netgear router connected as a source of WiFi. All of our devices are connected to this Netgear router and work fine, except my mother's iPhone but that may be unrelated to home network not sure ( would accept any thoughts on the iPhone issue though). I spoke with Xfinity and was told to remove the Netgear router as the xFi gateway is it's own router, but as Im moving devices over to the xFi I'm seeing so much more connectivity issues, such as long loading periods for websites, videos buffering/ or never loading, or having absolutely no connection to the internet. Is my xFi gateway having problems? Is this a problem with the ISP. Should I use the xFi as a modem and use Netgear as the source of WiFi? Like I said devices connected to Netgear have no connectivity issues, just my mother's iPhone. But they all have problems on xFi. Sorry if this is too convuluted, feel free to ask me anything in order to clarify as best I can. Thanks in advance

Why is my port not open?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 07:35 PM PDT

I recently wiped my pc clean and then upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10, now some of my ports that I used for some apps suddenly don't work anymore, although they are still set to be open on my router, and my pc still uses the same internal IP it used prior to the wipe, but I get all kinds of nat errors now.

what could have possibly changed and how do I fix this?

    any help would be appreciated.

set up overview: wireless bridge for apartment

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 01:03 PM PDT

I am moving to an apartment without Ethernet wiring, but a lot of my stuff runs on Ethernet. My plan is to buy an AP that supports wireless bridging and 5ghz, and a switch so I can connect all of my devices. I also want the device to be open source friendly, like OpenWRT and DD-WRT, so I can learn more about networking in the future. In my searching, I came across the Mikrotik hap ac2, which fits all my need, for a cheap price too. If anyone has this product, how does it hold up, and how well does it fit my need?

Why is YouTube loading very slow on network on my phone, but fine when using VPN?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 06:53 PM PDT

EDIT: Noticed that the title is a bit ambiguous. Issue is with Youtube on my phone when connected to Wifi.

I have a very weird issue that I have been trouble troubleshooting. Recently I noticed that whenever I watch YouTube videos on my phone, the buffering becomes ridiculous (takes over 30s to a minute to load next few seconds).

Initially I thought it could be my router acting up, so I tried watching via mobile connection only and it loaded normally. Restarted router and modem just in case, issue was still there.

After some time, I decided to try staying connected to my WiFi, but watching via VPN (PIA) and to my surprise it loaded normally!

This seemed very counter-intuitive, but since it is working this is how I'm watching now.

What I'm wondering is: Why is it that if I'm connected on wifi, Youtube performs like I'm on dial-up, but it is fine when I'm connected via a VPN? Is it routing issues? Are there any solutions I can try?

Other internet activities on my phone (gaming, browsing, etc.) is completely fine

Specs: Internet: 400mbps (still getting this on desktop).
    Phone + Wifi: 100mbps.

Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated, thanks.

Dual WAN: Low latency, low speed WAN with high latency, higher speed WAN?

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 06:47 PM PDT

My sister is moving to a semi-rural area. We are trying to figure out a good setup for her with the limited internet options. She has one option that is 3mb cable and another that is 25mb satellite. Her husband games and is worried the latency will be bad for his online gaming.

Could a dual WAN router help to solve this by providing more bandwidth for heavier loads but okay latency for lighter, more repetitive loads?

Suggestions on how to get better ping , professional gamer

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 06:24 PM PDT

Hey, this is my first post on Reddit , I came here because I know ppl online can help better than people who post yt vids and whatnot. So I'm a professional Gamer I play fortnite ( yes cringe and all that but earning money isn't so cringe ) and I live in Qatar. My ping is always hovering around the 0-20 mark, yes I know that that is very good but what I desire is a 0-10 ping constant. The servers are in Bahrain which isn't to far from Qatar it's actually right next to Qatar. I guess what I'm asking is is there a way to make my ping lower if possible but more consistent and more stable. The latency between me and my dns server is 1ms. I do use a Cat 6 Ethernet cable directly plugged into my router which is capable of giving 3gbps speeds. My router is Netgear Orbi R5 something I believe.
