Looking for my next machine for college, max budget of $1000, USA

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 09:33 PM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
$1000 USD is the max, willing to go over a little bit if need be
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
yes, but I would prefer new
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Not absolutely necessary, but I would prefer a touch screen. Ive had an HP Pavillion 15T for the past 3.5 - 4 years and the cheap, plastic design has held up well considering the wear and tear it has been subjected to, but I would like a better build quality this time around. As far as battery life, if it lasts at least ~4 hours, that's fine with me. Will be plugged in most of the time.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Weight is fairly important, I lugged that 15" Pavillon around for 3 years because I had to. Although, I will go back to a heavy-ish 15" if the price is right. Thinness isn't a factor for me unless it helps with the weight. I will be having class 5 days a week for the first time in a very long time and will be carrying this thing with me constantly.
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
I know this is unrealistic for my budget, but I dream of playing Minesweeper once again😔 No but I mainly play Rocket League, Minecraft, GTA V, The Outer Worlds, Madden, and The Witcher 3. I dont need ultra settings. I will want to play Cyberpunk 2077 on high settings if achievable.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
I'm doing Computer Science, so comfortable keys/key placement is high on my list. I would enjoy having a touch screen. I dont need an optical drive nor fingerprint scanner. Most have them one anyway, but I definitely need a webcam incase classes move online.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
My other uses would be using VMs for linux installations, light video editing. Would like a good screen as I will be streaming sports/movies solely on this device. Better screen for less powerful graphics card is a tradeoff I'm willing to make. I have found this [HP Envy 15]( https://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-envy-x360-laptop-15z-ds100-8wl85av-1?p ), which I included the Ryzen 7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD for 879.99. I've never had a Ryzen, would the integrated graphics be enough for the gaming aspect? That and the fact that it's 15"/4.5 lbs are the only potential cons I see, but theyre major ones. I found a 13" Envy with great specs for $999, but it's out of stock now so I can't even mull over the price (tax-wise and all that). Thanks for your time, I hope I answered all of the questions sufficiently!

I am not familiar with macbook's specs cuz they say u can't just translate it to windows cuz of Mac OS. So what do you guys recommend? I know that a macbookpro 15 retina is the way to go but the price of it just don't cut it.

    $200-$800, USA

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 01:13 AM PDT

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      $200-$800
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Don't care about form factor like the 2-in-1 stuff. Using mainly for college, so would like it to be decently sturdy, speedy, and have good battery life (8-12 hours). Highest priority to lowest: Performance, battery life, build quality, form factor.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Will be lugging it around campus, so would like it to be fairly easy to carry.
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      N/A
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Microsoft suite (word and excel mostly).
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      N/A
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
At least 2 USB ports. Huge plus if it somehow has whichever port the newest apple headphones use (though I don't want an apple so that's just a bonus, not a need). Idk if they make laptops with CD readers anymore but that would be awesome too.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I need it to be reliable. I've had my chromebook for almost 5 years and am pretty loathe to give it up even though it doesn't do what I need it to. I don't want something new to crap out on me in 3 years.

Please suggest a laptop for my sister who has taken admission in CS Engineering (50-60k INR)(India)

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
      • No
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
      • build quality > performance > battery life > form factor
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
      • Should not be more than 2Kg
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
      • 13-15
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
      • IDE like Visual Studio, IntelliJ, Google Chrome with multiple tabs
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      • No Gaming
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      • Build quality is important. My old lenovo Y50 broke twice due to hinge and build quality issues so don't want to face the same problem again. Required features are back-lit keyboard, USB-C and other adequate ports so no adapters are required, upgradable RAM. Good and loud speakers preferred.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
      • Open to both Intel and AMD suggestions. HP, Dell, Lenovo brands preferred. Want the laptop to be future proof.

    Edit: Formatting.

Alternative to Macbook Air a for a student

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 03:53 AM PDT

Hey guys, I am extremely thankful for this page, it helped me alot to understand what I am looking for!:)

I know this may be a quite often request, so if you could redirect me to a post where somebody already was looking for some similar alternative it would be gnarly! 🏄‍♂️

    ✅Total budget:

    500€-800€( I live in Lithuania)

    ❎Are you open to refurbs/used?

No, I would like to buy a new one.

✅How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

No touchscreen, no 2-1( I feel like there would be more energy consumption than actual need )

    1.Battery life 2. Performance 3. Build quality

✅How important is weight and thinness to you?

Quite important, similar to Macbook Air.

✅Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

As I made research, I believe for my needs I need ~15" screen.

✅Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Music editing (Fl studio pro, ableton) Gaming ( Cs go, World of tanks).

✅If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

60Fps and more would be great.

I do not play high quality, novel games.

❎Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

If there is an opportunity, then touchID would be marvelous. Good keyboard is also beneficial. :)

✅Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

From my research, I am probably looking for a Lenovo laptop.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Build and battery should be nice... and performance enough in terms of light gaming

How important is weight and thinness to you?

Any is fine... wont mind a kinda portable one though

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    14-15 inch

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Light gaming... and normal activity... nothing else too intensive

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Reliable build quality that lasts... and looks professional... ddfinetely not a gaming laptop style design... just a normal understated design

And very minor but a keyboard without a num pad would be better... very minor though

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Preferably HP, Dell laptops... but other will do too I have no real preference for screen quality... so whatever is good enough

15.6"-17.3" Laptop for Ableton, graphics, technical work; HU/EU; 1450 EUR/500000 HUF

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 03:25 AM PDT

Hi there, as the title suggests I am looking for a laptop that will be used heavily, mostly for Ableton/music production, including gigs, but it will be used somewhat less frequently for a lot of other software. I will also use it for engineering work and embedded device development. I have found a few candidates but I would be interested in your suggestions. I want to make an informed decision so not in a rush. I'm planning to use the new laptop for a long time, at least 5 years (the age of my current laptop which is definitely really banged up now). Any recommendations or ideas would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

Will be bought in Hungary, maximum budget is 500000 HUF preferably quite a bit less. Will be used in UK or European countries other than Hungary which might be important for warranty.

    Are you open to refurbs/used?

    No.

How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance = build quality, battery life, (form factor)

How important is weight and thinness to you?

A good, sleek design is always preferable, but rather have an indestructible tank that lasts a long time and is reliable even if it breaks my back

Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

At least 15.6". Ideally 17.3" but I can use a proper external screen for larger display size so 15.6" really is fine. Colour reproduction is important.

Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Basically constant use of Ableton Live, quite a bit of Adobe PS, less frequent use of other Adobe software (mostly video editing). Planning on using TouchDesigner in the future. I will game very occasionally. Might use this for CAD as well and using the GPU for neural network stuff is highly probable.

If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Mostly older games but I rarely seem to find the time. I definitely want to play Cyberpunk 2077 when it comes out. Not a priority at all.

Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

    • Build quality is important and don't want to deal with extreme overheating that makes the laptop unusable. I will use this nearly all day, every day and want it to last a long time.
    • Preferably no pre-installed OS, will use Linux Mint and Win10.
    • Good number of USB (Type A) ports is critical but will use a usb hub as well.
    • Ideally would have an SSD+HDD combo with min 256GB ssd, preferably more.
    • At least 16GB RAM (with potential to upgrade).
    • Decent DPC latency would be good, but 90% of the time I will use Ableton with external hardware so that problem is circumvented

Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

Currently the best candidate is a Lenovo Legion Y540 but I am worried about overheating problems and reliability. It's this exact model (sorry for no English page). Config is 17.3", i7-9750HF, GTX1660Ti, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD+1TB HDD. This is also basically the maximum I can spend and probably would go for something lower specced but cheaper if that's enough. Also I can get Dell products at wholesale price.

Definitely performance and battery life (and perhaps quality too since i want to buy one that can last for at least 5 yrs+)

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Pretty important, would be nice to have it less than 1.5kg

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    13" or 14" perhaps?

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Currently, I'm not too sure myself though i did do some codings back in school(Might code in future if i land a job relating to that field). I'd definitely want to run League of Legends as that is my primary soure of fun.

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

Stated above^ I'd much appreciated if my fps gets more than 60? I tend to get fps problems in my current laptop.

    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?

Doesn't need to be touch screen, I'd prefer chiclet keyboard as i do not like making too much noise when i type.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I am from Singapore and I wouldn't say I'm an avid gamer since i mostly play LoL but i would like to try new (up to date) games time to time with my friends. I'd appreciate if the laptop doesn't actually scream a gaming laptop. My current laptop is Fujitsu SH782 which i have been using since 7 years ago and it's officially dead past 2 days.

    (Searching) An audio/visual production Laptop

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 03:00 AM PDT

Hello friends, thank you for your help. I have currently reached my limit with my current computer (a 2011ish iMac) after realizing that between not being able to upgrade to the latest OSx and having outdated usb2 ports that one of the core functions of my computer can not be met. So here we go (was asked to redo my post with the questionnaire so here it is)

    From a musician/live visual artist

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:

No specific budget (more worried about getting what i need that will last) preferably under under 1500/2000ish us dollars

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?

Fine as long as it seems trustworthy (the seller i guess not the actual machine)

    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?

Performance is definitely most important, Battery life isn't the greatest of deals because I can keep the laptop plugged in even at events im working.

    • How important is weight and thinness to you?

Not as important as durability, will most likely have outdoors at times.

    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.

    N/A

    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.

Will be using resolume arena and some type of streaming/recording program (was trying to use OBS on old computer when i realized it wasn't going to work without a new machine) with regards to visual/video programming. Probably will get into post production for video eventually.

will also be using Ableton heavily*

    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?

No games (besides little flash games on websites)

**Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?*

Again durability due to gigging usage (will use in live visual rig to run resolume for projector control and live as a drummer running ableton)

A healthy amount of usb slots, would like to be able to do sound and lighting stuff together so plugging in an audio interface, push 2, and capture card all at once would be nice.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.

I do not have a preference for mac vs non mac, but have for the last decade only ever personally owned a mac computer so technology is not my strong suit.

Still unsure of whether moving to usb-c would be a worthwhile move so willing to hear opinions between that and usb3. Have not purchased an hdmi capture card because I wanted to wait until procuring a new computer.

Thank you again for the help and guidance!

    Reliable Windows Laptop

    Posted: 31 Jul 2020 02:05 AM PDT

Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Upwards of ~$1000, definitely less than $1700, the cheaper the better

    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, depending on the program- want a laptop that will last 5+ years
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
build quality (durability/few hardware problems), performance, form factor, battery life (plugged in mostly)
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
the thinner the better, the less weight the better. I am willing to make compromises up to a point
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
1920*1080 will suit my purposes, 100% color-accurate PLEASE (actually I might be able to make some compromises here)
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
full adobe suiting, light gaming (only 10% of use)
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
      - minecraft/valorant, etc., maybe some more story based game
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
      1) would prefer no number pad on build in keyboard.

    2) reliable build quality and hardware is a MUST (can compromise on build quality, NOT on hardware), don't really want a touch screen, finger print reader or optical drive. peripherals are figured out.

    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
previous computer was macbook pro mid-2012, definitely disappointed with specs and upgradability, but its lasted me a solid 8 years- old specs & OS compatibility are both bottlenecks.

I have around $1000 to spend on a laptop, but thinking I could split it up into an iPad pro (for durability) and then get an nitro 5 for around $1500 total.

my current hardware ecosystem and their uses:

    • Lenovo N23 Yoga: for schoolwork/ portable work
    • Macbook Pro mid-2012: for video editing, gaming, web-browsing, communications, non-web based applications (what I'd be looking to replace). hooked up to battery outlet & an external monitor all the time.
    • iPhone 6s: daily driver phone. call/text

I see iPad + Nitro 5 combo replacing macbook pro + Lenovo, but I think I could compromise and just replace Macbook w/ Nitro 5 for now.

    Some candidates:

I've been scouting the web for a new laptop for university, and have ended up with a couple of different options. Hoped you guys here could help me make a decision, as all these have almost identical specs.

    Acer Nitro 5 Rtx 2060 I7 10750H 16GB RAM 1TB SSD

    ASUS TUF A15 Rtx 2060 Ryzen 7 4800H 16GB RAM 1TB SSD

    MSI Creator 15M Rtx 2060 I7 10750H 16GB RAM 512GB SSD

    MSI GL65 Leopard Rtx 2060 I7 10750H 16GB RAM 512GB SSD

Their all in the same price range as well. Which one would you guys suggest??
