    Simple Questions - June 29, 2020

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:15 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

I need to replace my office chair of 20+ years with a new, well priced gaming chair...and I don't know where to look.

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 03:00 PM PDT

Hey ya'll. I'm looking to replace my office chair of 20+ years (it was a hand-me-down from my father) and I have no idea where to look. 'Best Chair" articles are overwhelming. I've been looking on and off for one for about 2 years now. Everything is so expensive and my budget is $100-150. I'd prefer a chair that is either all black or black w/ white accents so it matches my space. It also must be a high back, wide chair (for maximum comfort!). I could really use some recommendations. I'm sure I'm not the only one who had this problem. Thanks!

Edit 1: please know I'm not looking for a gaming chair brand. Office chairs will do. Please comment if you have a suggestion or recommendation....thank you!

Edit 2: thank you all for your suggestions! I can't reply to all but I'm upvoting as a sign of appreciation!

High-end Nvidia gaming GPU upgrade possibilities with a 650w PSU

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 04:13 AM PDT

I currently have an EVGA 1080 Ti and a 9700k overclocked to 4.9Ghz with a Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Pro. I'm looking to better understand what my GPU upgrade possibilities are over the coming months, perhaps unsurprisingly, in preparation for playing Cyberpunk 2077 in the highest fidelity possible using my current rig.

Since it's not yet released, system requirements are unknown so my 1080 Ti might still be able to squeeze out 100+ frames on maximum settings, but I won't be holding my breath.

    That being said...

My current monitor is 1080p ultrawide 144hz G-Sync. So the pixel count is effectively between 16:9 1080p and 16:9 1440p. I will be upgrading to a 1440p 144hz ultrawide in the next 18 months however. So the new GPU must be capable of high frame rate performance at 1440p.

My PSU is an EVGA 650W G3, which is 80 Plus Gold rated. Pertinant to my question is that it is capable of delivering 650w to a single 12v rail, which in my understanding is where the two most power-hungry components - the GPU and CPU - draw their power from.

I did a power consumption test using OCCT and my OC'd 9700k drew, at peak, 215W.

So, theoretically I could comfortably hook up even a 2080 Ti, which, according to this Tom's Hardware article, consumes 279W under a gaming load.

    Looking at the numbers:

    650-279-215 = 156W of "headroom".

The OuterVision power supply requirements calculator supports my numbers too.

Am I missing anything to suggest that I should be wary of using a 2080 Ti (with stock BIOS) in my system?

I am more interested in the 3xxx series of cards, which are predicted to be more power efficient, which can only be a good thing in my situation. But since they are not released yet, it is still all pure speculation.

Is a HDD fast enough for games if windows is installed on an SSD?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:24 PM PDT

It got me thinking, without windows doing all its reading/writing/computing whatever on the HDD, would it make the hard drive better? I ask as I have a 256GB SSD, with windows and my usual software installed, along with a few games, but I want to download a lot more and need about 2TB storage, and going the HDD route would obviously be much cheaper.

I've never built a computer before, any advice on what I've got so far?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 01:49 PM PDT

Hi all! New to reddit and new to building PCs, but I realized that my old gaming laptop isn't going to cut it anymore and I might as well invest in something that I can upgrade more easily in the future. I've been using Newegg and a bunch of top-10 lists to help me narrow down parts, but I definitely want to get some second opinions before committing to anything.

    • Intel i5-10600K
    • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super
    • MPG Z490 Gaming Carbon Wifi
    • Corsair RM650 Fully Modular PSU
    • Corsair RGB Pro 8GBx2 3600 MHz
    • MAG CoreLiquid240R Cooler
    • Fractal Meshify C Tempered Glass Case

I'm still figuring out storage - I read somewhere that I should get a hard drive and an SSD, is there a certain amount of TB and GB I should be looking for, respectively? I think everything else should be compatible. Any advice you can offer would be really appreciated!

I noticed this at the end of the PC part picker list. "The MSI MPG Z490 GAMING EDGE WIFI ATX LGA1200 Motherboard has an additional 4-pin ATX power connector but the Corsair RMx (2018) 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply does not. This connector is used to supply additional 12V current to the motherboard. While the system will likely still run without it, higher current demands such as extreme overclocking or large video card current draws may require it."

Should I consider finding another PSU, or is this unlikely to be a problem if I don't plan to overclock?

    Inexplicable power down

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:33 PM PDT

I built a pc recently for my sister. I got it to go, everything seemed fine. Then, I get word that the computer would shut down, not reboot, and it wouldn't turn on unless I flipped the I/O on the power supply.

I figure (hope) that it's the power supply rather than a more expensive part. Any suggestions? All the parts are new. Power supply is 750W. RTX 2060, i5 9500, 16 gb ram ddr4, ASUS TUF gaming wifi bluetooth mobo.

Problems with RAM detection - Any help greatly appreciated

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 04:27 AM PDT

For the past two weeks, I have been troubleshooting my 3-month-old PC in response to a problem that started occurring with my RAM. I had reinstalled Windows 10 and everything worked fine for two days, until one morning I booted up my PC and it didn't start. The DRAM debug LED was turned on and there was no post. I tried every stick individually and the PC posted with each one. When I combined two sticks in dual channel, the PC posted but only detected 8GB of the 16GB that were installed. If I tried to use all four, the PC would once again not post and the DRAM LED turns on. Since I had tried all four individually, I assumed the problem to be elsewhere. I returned my mobo, swapping it out for the same one, but the problem persisted. Next, I thought it could be the memory controller on the CPU, so I returned that too, and still, the problem continued. Neither CPU had any bent pins. I still had an old PSU laying around, so I tested that too to see if my PSU was the problem, but alas. After none of the hardware changes fixed the problem, I moved on to software. I was on the most recent BIOS, so I flashed the oldest possible version. This was a step in the right direction as the PC now posted with all four sticks installed and detected 16GB in the BIOS, but still not the full 32GB. Another strange issue here was that the XMP Profile had some very strange values. I cleared the CMOS multiple times during the above tests. I also made sure that all cables were plugged in properly and reseated the CPU.

    Specs:

    CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X

Mobo: MSI X470 Gaming Pro Max

    RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB 32GB (4x8) 3600 CL18

GPU: Zotac GTX 1070 Amp! Edition

    PSU: Corsair RM750X

    CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i

I originally thought it couldn't be the RAM because all sticks work individually but now I am not so sure. I am starting to lose my mind and would greatly appreciate any help that anyone can provide.

Sanity post for people thinking about building

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:23 AM PDT

So I just finished my first ground-up build and I wanted to make a post just to help out people like me. Obviously it's a good idea to spend a fair amount of time doing research and learning what's what before you start building, especially if you've never done it before; that's where this sub can be a lifesaver. I've been working on getting parts and planning things out for a few months now, and this sub has been very helpful in getting me ready for the build, which I finished yesterday.

Having said that, it's important to remember that the majority of posts on this sub are people asking for help. This is great, since this is what the sub is for, but it can make it seem like problems are more common than they are. Not many people come here to post about how "just did my average-ass build, worked great, no issues," but rather come here to post about how they couldn't post or their GPU isn't working or their ram timings are wrong, etc. Hence this post.

I bought all my parts of the last month and a half or so, finally got the last components yesterday, and spent the afternoon assembling. Start to finish was about 3 hours from opening the first box to having the desktop. It posted on the first try, BIOS setup made sense, drivers downloaded with no issues, and everything since then has been running like a dream.

tl;dr - Don't let this sub freak you out. People come here with questions and problems, but that doesn't mean your rig won't just work. Make sure you do your research and take your time building and odds are you'll be just fine.

Also in case anyone cares here are specs.

FIRST BUILD- Nothing happens when switched on apart from MOBO LEDs

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 04:21 AM PDT

    Hello,

EDIT!! PROBLEM HAS BEEN FIXED (read below for details)

I have just built my first ITX PC. However when I plug everything in and switch on the computer from the case nothing happens apart from the LEDs on the motherboard turning on. No fans, no case LEDs, nothing.

    • All the parts have been bought brand new.
    • I have made sure everything is plugged in firmly.
    • The power switch on the PSU has been switched on.
    • I've connected the CPU, GPU and PSU cables to the mobo. -According to T-Force the RAM is compatible with my components.

    This is my build:

CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX B450 i RAM: T- Force 2x16gb 3200hz PSU: Corsair SF600 (Platinum) GPU: Nvidia RTX 2060 Super SSD: M.2 Samsung 970 Evo 1tb

I am using the QB One Sharkoon case and AMD stock cooler for now (I am waiting for my Dan A4 case and Black Ridge cpu cooler)

At first I thought it may be a problem with the RAM however I contacted T-Force and they said it's ok.

I then think it could be something to do with the case cables not plugged correctly. I was a bit confused by the LED connectors.

If anyone could give me some guidance on how to get my PC working that would be great!

I can add pictures if that helps.

EDIT!!! Thank you for all the help! I noticed on my front panel of the case, one of the wires connecting the power button came loose. I also used the ASUS adapter for the HDD/RESET/POWER cables.

As my RAM was in the way at the time I didn't push the adapter far enough into the socket. Once I removed 1 RAM I could see the issue. I plugged the adapter in full and then used a screwdriver to turn on the power. Fans, GPU the whole lot now turns on. I am now going to try and plug into my monitor. Hopefully the rest goes to plan.

    Thanks.

Do ssd's make the whole pc faster?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 06:01 PM PDT

So i was planning on getting an ssd for my pc and i was struck with a question.Since i also have a 1tb hdd, that means there'll be some hdd partition drives and some ssd drives. Now the question was that, will the ssd make the whole pc faster or just the drives of the ssd?

What if i have a game on one of my hdd's partition, will adding an ssd make the loading times of those specific game faster?

And what if the windows is installed in an hdd drive? Will it be any better if i install the windows on the ssd?

Hey all! After a long time of not using my PC, I am ready to get back into PC gaming. I am able to keep some of the parts from my old computer (namely the PSU, Hard drive, and my case). I am looking for advice on what GPU, CPU, Motherboard, and RAM to get for it. My brother suggested some parts for it, which I have put into pcpartpicker, along with my existing parts. Are these the best options for me? I am willing to spend up to $1300 USD, but would (obviously) prefer cheaper. This is the build that he suggested using my existing parts. PCPartPicker Part List

Need help with last minute changes for my friend's PC

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:40 PM PDT

I'm building a PC for my buddy and he's got about $1300 for a budget. He wanted a 2070 Super for sure and I recommended an ATX motherboard for aesthetics since I think it looks awkward with a Mid/Full Tower case that isn't filled out entirely. I've seen a lot of part recommendations but a good majority of the usual recommended parts are all sold out currently. Also the more RGB the better but it's not a must have.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Gaming primarily like COD/R6 Siege/CSGO/Smite/MonsterHunter

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

He's Getting a 165Hz Monitor at 1080p so Preferabbly 165 or so fps.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

$1300 but cheaper is better. He does want a 2070 Super instead of a rx 5700XT though

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

USA. Specifically around the Kansas City Area and we are by a microcenter which is where we'll be getting the parts but could hold off a bit if newegg or amazon have better options.

Here is the build we've got so far:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TnWngJ

We will be totally legally purchasing a windows key online so don't worry about OS ;)

Summary After taking his PC home and setting it up, he complains to me of bad frame-rate. I ask him where on his PC his Monitor/HDMI is plugged in(his motherboard) and to make sure it's plugged into the GPU. He plugs into the GPU, and shortly after shuts down his PC(to plug it into a surge protector) after doing this, his PC will no longer boot, regardless of where his monitor is plugged in. Mobo light is solid green, no fans spinning. No error codes or lights etc.

Troubleshooting I'm not at his house at this point, and he's not comfortable doing any open-case troubleshooting, so I guide him through simple things like power cycling, testing different outlets, power cables. Finally, I told him to unplug the power & peripherals and let it sit for an hour before trying again. He ended up letting it sit overnight.

In the morning he attempted to boot with the monitor & peripherals unplugged, and it worked. He then shut it down, and plugged it into his Surge Protector, once again it booted. (at this point he wasn't too keen on shutting his PC down anymore, and since everything was functioning despite the boot issue, I decided to skip forcing him to boot test his peripherals one at a time.)

The Problem is: His PC seems to refuse to power on with peripherals installed, but they function fine if they're installed after a successful boot. He is now gaming on it without issues. I'm having him monitor temps and everything is functioning fine under load...

I've only built a handful of PC's, I've never had any serious issues with a build(or any that I couldn't solve over time) but I've also never had one taken out of my hands so quickly. My cousin isn't exactly a patient man. So he's unlikely to let his shiny new PC sit while he waits a few days for me to come down and take a look at it, especially since it's now running without any other issues.

I've got a laundry list of things to do if a pc won't Post, but now that his is, I'm kind of at a loss. I'm sure something just unseated itself during the ride, or something similarly benign... but I'm hoping maybe you guys can shed some light on what might be causing this, and whether or not it's serious...

    Thanks!

Gelp me choose a replacement CPU

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:33 PM PDT

With the help of the fine folks at r/buildapcforme, I've settled on this setup for my first build, but it turns out, the CPU is pre-order only. It was supposed to be released by March of this year, but it's still unavailible, with no information on a release date.

I'd like to find a processor at a similar price point with similar specs, that won't have any compatability issues with the rest of the build.

See this thread for information about my setup and requirements.

    Thanks in advance.
