Mesh router vs. router with mesh "feature"? Posted: 29 Jun 2020 01:35 PM PDT Currently I have a TP-Link AC1200 router + a FIOS modem. I'm paying for 200mbps (but considering upping it to 400 since I just started a new job). I also have an Intel NUC that I leave on all the time as a server running on the other end of the apartment. My partner and I also have phones that don't get any WiFi on the other end of the apartment. It's roughly an 800sq. ft. apartment, but it's very narrow and is laid out like one long hallway. Does it make sense to get something like the TP-Link RE300 and Router Archer A7 that use "One-Mesh" or use a "true mesh" like the TP-Link Deco M5 that contains 2-3 devices for each room? Are there any huge drawbacks to using a mesh network in general? [link] [comments] |
Anyone know what this networking equipment is used for? Tech has no clue Posted: 29 Jun 2020 03:28 PM PDT https://imgur.com/gallery/SXv0FNC Just had internet installed in the place we just bought and the technician had no idea why there was so many lines. What was the previous owner up to? What can we use the equipment for (if anything)? Any help is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
APSA- Netgear will charge you $89 to file your RMA even if your routers still under warranty Posted: 28 Jun 2020 10:42 PM PDT I bought a Netgear Nighthawk R7000P for ~$250, and their customer service has been borderline predatory. I've had this router with me for 10 months or so now; and over the past week, it's been kicking all my devices off the network at the same time every 20-30 minutes or so (running behind a UPS, so bad electricity is not a problem). With work at home in effect, and most of my work involving analyzing data from my company's databases, this has been a frustuating problem to deal with. After reseting the router and trying various other steps online; I called into phone support. At the time of writing, I just got off the phone with Netgear support; scripted lines and disconnected calls aside- I was informed my router had a 90 day support period on my 1 year warranty, and since the rep somehow figured out my router wasn't experiencing a hardware problem by having me narrate out the color of the power and network LEDs, I'd have to pay money ($89) to get support to diagnose whether my router was working or not to get warranty support for a $200+ router. I'm at a complete loss of words- at the fact that they're diagnostics are erroneous/ don't consider this a hardware problem, and the fact that I need to pay money to submit an RMA that's still under warranty. If I didn't know any better, I'd imagine I called into a scam center. But yeah; I'm throughly dissapointed in my support experience, and am posting here as a PSA of sorts if you're considering buying one of their products. Don't. Edit- you literally HAVE to go through phone support to file an RMA. As soon as you file an RMA online, you're told to contact phone support within 48 hours or your case will be closed. Forced into buying a docsis 3.1 modem. Need advice please. Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:29 PM PDT Long story short I need to buy a docsis 3.1 modem for my ISP to upgrade my internet speeds. Do I need to upgrade my router as well or will my current router be sufficient? [link] [comments] |
Advice for an old Toshiba laptop Posted: 29 Jun 2020 10:26 AM PDT I have a Toshiba Satellite L645 that was my primary school computer, and currently is functioning as a work computer (research related). I upgraded it to Windows 10 back in January and it's been working pretty good for only having a 1.82 Ghz Intel P6000. Unfortunately since the June 2020 Win 10 update it's been performing slower and the battery (new) keeps getting sucked dry in half the time it should. Since I don't use any work related applications on the Toshiba except for a VoIP app - that is used when we work from home - that we are going to cease using due to bugs. Should I just use it as is until it finally reaches EOL, OR throw a Linux distro on there and stop over analyzing like an indecisive fool? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jun 2020 02:29 PM PDT I am trying to find out if I've overloaded my network with connected outlets/bulbs/smart speakers or i have a serious coax signal problem. I've been using an Arris SBG6400 for years as modem and router, and I already bought an Archer AC4000 (still in transit) thinking that it's probably both overloaded old SBG6400 that just isn't a good router and potential signal problems. There's a hydra of coax in my basement but I've routed around most of the splitters (we don't use cable TV anywhere in the house anyway) hoping to eliminate issues. I've tried to do some research before posting here and I know that the ideal number of uncorreectables is zero so I think that shows a signal problem but I'm hoping someone is willing to take a look and tell me if there are any major problems here I'm not understanding. Error Lost connection when rebooting first edgerouter x setup Posted: 29 Jun 2020 03:45 PM PDT I'm trying to set my Edgerouter up for the first time and every time I apply my settings and then reboot, it said error connection was lost and then I can't get back on the Edgerouter ip page anymore and have to reset my Edgerouter but it still doesn't work. squid cache dynamic_refresh information Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:20 PM PDT sorry if this post is a tad odd, I'm not gonna lie, I'm kind of out of my league and experience here, but anyways, I had a heck of a time finding useful information online about current and working squid custom dynamic_refresh information, and what I could find online was few and far between, so I figured I'd try and make a collaborative effort to catalogue useful information for squids dynamic refresh options online, so I made a public github repository, if anyone is able to, please by all means do contribute, if you know if I have set github up incorrectly, PLEASE TELL ME, have not used it till today for this exact purpose so I most likely have things configured incorrectly, my goal here is simple, I cannot be the only person who would benefit from a collaborative effort to list information for use with squids dynamic_refresh capabilities, so I wanted to make a public location for the documentation of information for this purpose. I also however know that I do NOT know nearly enough to know if what I have configured in this will work, work as expected, or work as desired either, thus the end goal of this. I hope this post is okay, but to be totally honest, I'm not totally sure either, so by all means, edit or delete this post if its not. the github repository url is the following, my goal is to allow others a public and easy way to help add info and or suggest changes, additions, tweaks, or otherwise help with this, so if I need to change anything in any way, please let me know! https://github.com/mmd123/squid-cache-dynamic_refresh-list I will add right now, that I'm also posting this in r/PFSENSE as well, as for any extra info, if I need to add anything by all means ask me and I shall! Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:17 PM PDT before 2 weeks ago my connection was just fine and dandy then one day I saw my ISP's van outside when I was on my way to work and didn't think much of it. I get home that night and my wifi is acting crazy. the speeds were fast but i was lagging on my playstation and getting kicked from the party WITH an ethernet and my youtube videos were buffering, mind you it's just me and my roommate who live there. call mediacom and they send out a rep and i wasn't here but my roommate was so idk what went on but i get back home and it's doing the same thing. fast forward a few days later i see another van so i'm like ok. go up to my apartment and my wifi isn't working so i go out to look for the dude and tell him my wifi isn't working but it was before i left the house. he "fixes" it or what not and says "someone must've connected your line with your neighbors because when i disconnected his, it cut yours too" so i'm like ok just fix it. idk what he did but it comes back on and it does the same thing as before. so i upgraded my plan to 500mb( was recently on 100mb) and im still lagging and getting kicked and now when i test my internet connection it's so low on ETHERNET like really? i just tested it and it says 14mbps download and 2.7mbps upload. Is this what i'm paying you for? Made another appointment for another rep to come out tomorrow. Should I just ask for a new router or buy my own? And it's not my ethernet cable because i swapped it out twice [link] [comments] |

Unsure about the switch I will need Posted: 29 Jun 2020 04:26 PM PDT As far as 8-or-10 port gigabit switches go, what do you recommend for my home office use case? Internet: FTTH 1Gbps/1Gbps Router: Ubiquiti Edgerouter 4 Switch: ? AP: Linksys Velop VLP0203 (plus one extra triband velop router) for connecting home theater and mobile devices Extras: Raspberry Pi running hassio / pi hole The Edgeswitch 10x looks nice but it seems a bit like overkill. Would the Cisco SG110D-08 do the job? Total devices: ~20 total wired and wireless, no need for PoE r/n [link] [comments] |
[Asus] Port Forward seems to go down regularly, but only on some ports Posted: 29 Jun 2020 08:08 PM PDT Soo I've got this weird issue I've been debugging for a long while. I've got a service that runs on a few different ports (one for the main service, another for registering/etc). I run it in a home network on an old PC, and have all the ports forwarded. About 50% of the time it works. Sometimes it'll be down, and people need to refresh the app 5-10 times and wait 20 minutes to get in. Running Going to Running The only other culprit I can think of is sometimes the router overheats. It doesn't get like blazing hot or anything, but it definitely gets warm at times. So I'm wondering - Does anyone have any suggestions on things to try? I have no idea why it sometimes works. I'm all ears and will give anything a shot at this point. [link] [comments] |
Checking historical router access log? Posted: 29 Jun 2020 04:22 PM PDT Hi all, Hope everyone is staying safe out there in this pandemic! I'm a bit worried and am really hoping someone here could lend their expertise for a few minutes! Quick question for you all - I recently noticed the internet was a bit slower than usual and wanted to go into the admin console to see if there was anything odd. The most troubling thing was that the password seemed to have been reset back to the default, and although the actual WiFi password was unchanged (relatively secure) I am worried about the security of the network over the past few months. It's possible that the updated console password was never changed or something - but it still means the network would not have been secure for at least a few months. Is there any way to pull a historical log of devices that have accessed the network, or see any info on login history / whether any settings have changed? I use a Motorola Modem + Router, Model MG7550. I've clicked around the admin console, but have only seen an "event log" which had a couple dozen errors I did not recognize but did not show any information on device connections. I've been on hold with Motorola for about an hour now, but wondering if there's a solution I'm missing out on. It would be great to get a log of devices / connection requests to have on hand, just incase! EDIT: Just talked to Motorola and they seemed to suggest that if that info is not in the event log it can't be found (ie history of devices connecting or whether any router settings were changed). Is there anything else I should do or should I just reset and set up a strong password? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jun 2020 04:18 PM PDT Hi all, after doing much research I have narrowed down my mesh choices to the TP Link Deco M9 tri-pack or the Eero pro with at least one beacon. I have a relatively small space at 12-1500 sq ft. Not sure excatly on the size of my place. The M9 seems like a highly regarded tri-band option. Wheras the Eero pro is highly regarded for the SQM feature and an overall strong router. Though, I am a bit leery of anything Amazon or Google produces because of security issues surrounding possible data collection. Any recommendations one way or the other or if I should be considering a different mesh system would be helpful! [link] [comments] |
Amplifi mesh network & PS4 pro Posted: 29 Jun 2020 04:15 PM PDT Anyone successfully set this up? Constant connection drops, likely switching between 2.4 & 5g networks. Prefer not add additional said bands for specific 2.4 & 5g if I don't have to. Googled a bunch and read a bunch of frustrated posts. No answers. Halp? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:59 PM PDT So I have Optimum cable internet, 300 mbps. I started the service about 3 months ago when I bought my new house. Ever since starting the service my internet will occasionally drop out. There are 3 people in the house and I have quite a few smart devices, LAN IP Cameras, Echos, Google Homes etc. Initially Optimum told me the issue was that the router they provided was too weak to handle so many devices. I bought a new router (a TP Link) and experienced the same issues. I called Optimum again, they sent out a tech and the tech replaced my modem and router with a Ubee Modem/Router combo. I thought things were working then tonight, while one person was using 5G on PS4, one person using a Chromecast on 2G to stream Netflix and another person connected vis LAN to router, the 2G user and LAN user were kicked and the 5G user was able to remain in a PS4 game. This is becoming so frustrating and we have no alternative (to my knowledge) for internet. My speeds are also intermittently slow. Is it possible that a lack of bandwidth could cause this? Why would we lose the 2G and LAN connection but not the 5G? Please help. [link] [comments] |
Power line Ethernet not cutting it! Posted: 29 Jun 2020 12:24 PM PDT Recently we have added an extra desktop onto power line Ethernet bringing the total to two. The new one is hogging all the internet. The way the house is arranged is two desktop connected to router directly through Ethernet. And two sharing the power line Ethernet. There are many devices connected to WiFi including smart TVs and phones and other devices (5 people in the house). Was looking for a solution for the PCs on the power line, both playing video games online. Direct connections would not reach either. Ideas I've had were either USB or PCI wifi cards but I think the connection would be horrible in this cause of so many devices. Internet speeds is only 5-75mb/s depending on the connection. Any help you be appreciated. Extra information; In Ireland and the router is the basic one the ISP gave us. [link] [comments] |
A few questions before attempting Ethernet over Powerline. Posted: 29 Jun 2020 04:08 PM PDT Hi, I'm trying to get internet access in my garage. I have a home office with an iMac and might consider moving it to the detached garage. It runs off the same electrical panel, but most certainly on different breakers. The wifi from the house is weak in the garage. My iPad can barely pick it up. Is a wifi extender a good option? Or is Ethernet over powerline a better solution? If I'm comparing AV2 or better technology, is there much difference between manufacturers? Regarding reliability, life expectancy, or support? I can pick up a Netgear at the local box store. Any difference between them for this application? Im excited to get this going, so may not want to wait for shipping. I'm not the sharpest tool around here, so thanks, but keep it kinda simple, eh? Posted: 29 Jun 2020 12:20 PM PDT I tried posting this in /r/hacking but they auto-removed it for some reason. I don't know anything about hacking and little about security, I'm fumbling around. Hopefully someone here knows something? [link] [comments] |
Significantly slower speeds when sharing gig switch Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:51 PM PDT I have GS108 hooked into my gwifi router. When my laptop is the only one plugged in, I get full speed, 650 mbps. When I have my PS4 also plugged in but not using any data, my speed drops to 190s. Is this expected behavior? [link] [comments] |
Need assistance with Netgear router being used as an access point Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:39 PM PDT So my internet went out completely and after a service call, my ISP gave me a new Arris modem and connected it to my Linksys router. My son has a Netgear C6300 router in his room that he uses as an access point, and ever since my modem was replaced, the Netgear router can't connect to wifi. I figure there is a configuration problem somewhere. My ISP won't help me since it is not their equipment. Can anyone please provide some help configuring the Netgear router so the wifi will work in my son's room again? [link] [comments] |

How to Set Guest WIFI with Different IP Address Posted: 29 Jun 2020 07:37 PM PDT Hey guys, quick question so I got FIOS and for security reasons would like my guest wifi to have a different external ip address than the one I use on my computer, but I know verizon only gives me one static ip not sure how much they charge for a second one What are my options? I was thinking maybe buying a second router and having it setup to always use a VPN ip address, would this be a good option? And if so anyone know a good router that works for VPN.. and if anyone can think of a better solution that'd be awesome [link] [comments] |
