This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

I Will Legit Paypal Someone $10 If They Can Fix This

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 11:55 AM PDT

Hey everyone, I finished my build a little while back and I've noticed something odd since. It felt to me like things were not running great considering my hardware, it wasn't horrible, but just didn't feel right. I pushed it aside because I thought it was just me, but today I confirmed it. I ran the benchmark in Shadow of the tomb raider and compared it to another benchmark that ran the exact same settings and worse hardware, yet mine performed worse. The other person had a Ryzen 3600, a 2070, and 16gb of RAM, and averaged 103 fps. I have a Ryzen 3800x, 2070 Super, and 16gb RAM and averaged 83 FPS. All of our settings, resolutions, everything, were the exact same.

Any ideas on why this is happening? I did a clean uninstall of the drivers and reinstalled them but it's still the same. I'm not sure what to do from here. One thing I was thinking about is I have a 550W PSU which I know is on the low end for this type of a system, but I believe my system still only draws about 430, so could it really be that throttling it?

I also have run multiple benchmark softwares and it's evident something is wrong there as well. While other people with the exact same hardware are scoring numbers like 9500, I'm scoring 6000 if I'm lucky.

Would love some help, thanks for your time and effort, it's much appreciated

    Current Prices

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 10:49 PM PDT

Hello all! I've only been a console gamer and as a recent college grad, I'd like to gift myself a gaming pc fornthe past 4 years of work. I got so excited to finally get one, but realized that it may not be the best time to get one given the Corona situation. Idk what prices were like before the pandemic hit, so I'm not sure if I should go ahead and try to build one. My budget is $1,000. Any sort of help or input would be greatly appreciated!

    Finally achieved my childhood dream

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 12:17 PM PDT

Since i was a kid i wished for a PC, but never got the money and my dad wouldnt help me at all cuz "youre only gonna play and forget about everything and get addicted". But after selling a bunch of stuff, lending money from my partner and some more from work and other stuff, i made it!

Well, the catch is that i reused parts from my really old pc, heres the specs:

    CPU | AMD Ryzen 3 3200G 3.6 GHz Quad-Core Processor

Motherboard | MSI B450M PRO-VDH PLUS Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard

    Memory| G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 CL15 Memory

Storage |Seagate Barracuda 500 GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

    Case | Old Halion

PSU | Really Old Halion 600w

Now, this needs a bit of clarification i've only bougth the Ryzen, the MOBO and the RAM. The hard drive, the case and the power supply are reused. Halion is a local brand (apparently)

The case is pretty much a box but it works, the only problem its the PSU, its 10 years old, im kinda worried it may explode but hey, im using it just fine right now! I wouldve loved to buy a new one but i just dont have the money, maybe in a few months i can save enough.

Anyway, it works! And its soooo good, im loving it.

Thanks to anyone reading this, i just wanted to share my happiness.

PD: apparently i have no idea how to format this, send help.

I have never joined, nor looked at this sub.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 01:33 AM PDT

I have never joined, nor looked at this sub. I didn't even know about its existence.

But, 1 week ago, I decided to start buying components for my PC, starting with and SSD to install Windows 10, and bring my childhood PC to its old glory.

3 days ago, the SSD arrives and I install Windows 10. (Props to SSDs: they're extremely and impressively quick compared to an HDD, I thought people meant a slight change but I was blown away)

2 days ago, Reddit starts suggesting this sub to me, notifying me about rising posts on here.

This is a great coincidence, due to the Steam discounts happening super close to me making my PC usable again.

I have never joined, nor looked at this sub, but I'm happy I got to thanks to Reddit.

TN vs VA vs ISP / monitor help

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 01:42 PM PDT

Can anyone explain the differences between and advantages of each of these panel types? Aside from knowing prices usually go VA < TN < IPS I don't really know much else. I am also looking to purchase a good 1440p monitor to go with my first gaming pc build and so I've listed a couple I've seen recommended if you have an opinion on which is a better choice or if you have another suggestion just let me know down below, thanks!

    Upgrade path: i5-10600k or 3600 > 4700x?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 12:03 PM PDT

    Hello all,

I am looking to upgrade from my trusty i5-4690k that I have O.C.'d to 4.5 GHz to a more modern CPU and would like some input. Primary purpose for the PC is gaming (1440p, 144hz) and occasional work from home (nothing CPU intensive). I am looking to upgrade my CPU in the next month and will take care of upgrading my GPU (GTX1080) next fall or later. I am on a somewhat limited budget now that will expand next fall.

    My AMD build: Price
    Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite $160
    Ryzen 5 3600 $160
    3600mhz CL16 RAM ~$100
    Total today (after tax) ~$450
    Ryzen 4700x +$275
    240-280mm AIO +$100
    Ryzen 5 3600 -$100 (estimate)
    Total (after tax) ~$735

The idea of this build is to upgrade for as cheap as possible right away and then have the ability to easily upgrade to a beefy 4000 series Ryzen processor when prices come down next year. 2600s are still going for about $100 on hardwareswap so I'm confident that I can move the CPU in that range. I will combine that with a budget 240-280mm AIO and have a sleek & cool running PC ready for a 3000 series Nvidia GPU with no bottlenecks. I would prefer the B550 chipset because of native Zen 3 support and better VRMs.

    My Intel build: Price
MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Plus $160
    i5-10600k $275
3600mhz CL16 RAM ~$80 (looser timings on this build)
    Total today (after tax) ~$550
    240-280mm AIO +$100
    Total (after tax) ~$660

The idea behind this build is to get a strong gaming CPU right away. I am getting a bit cheaper RAM to lower the initial cost to under $550. I do like the tinkering nature of PC building and I would love to tune this CPU to achieve 10900k like results seen on benchmarks. The problem with this build is I currently have a Corsair H60 cooler that won't be able to achieve the boost clocks or high overclocks that make the 10600k so appealing. I will wait until I have more money to spend next year to upgrade my AIO and achieve a nice overclock.

    Price difference: $75

Both builds include nice MOBOs with 2.5G LAN and ALC1200 audio codecs. Both MOBOs have beefy VRMs that can handle the overclocks that I plan on throwing at them. The AMD build does have PCIE 4.0 support which will be useful working with large datasets and files from home in the future. I know which one I am leaning towards but I would the community's input.

    Thanks!

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 01:11 PM PDT

I am ordering the parts to my first build and I was originally planning on getting the Asus TUF X570-Plus (WiFi) but it's out of stock. The same thing happened with my PSU but I got a different one. So I need to get a MoBo from around 200-230 USD price range.

    Do I need extra fans?

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 02:36 PM PDT

As a first time builder, I don't really know much abo the science behind pc building. I'm in the process of building right now, and I didn't buy any fans outside of the cpu fan and power supply. I'm wondering if I should also put in some extra airflow to help with the cooling?

First time building. Want some overall advice.

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 04:16 PM PDT

I have already picked all parts, just wanted opinions and advice: will everything fit? Should I change some parts or are all of them good? Should I buy some fans (if yes, which ones) or the stock ones are good?

For the graphics card, from what I have read it nearly doesn't matter what manufacturer I buy from, is that correct? Asking, cus I am currently near a micro center for another week or so and was thinking of buying an EVGA Black from there instead of the Nvidia form Best Buy. Should I?

PC is stuck in a boot cycle with debug LEDs

    Posted: 27 Jun 2020 10:23 AM PDT

    Hi,

Since yesterday my PC won't properly boot and seems to be stuck in an endless cycle. The debug/warning LEDs display red CPU, white VGA, yellow BOOT in sequence before rebooting again. The fans and and DRAM LEDs do turn on for about 2 seconds during that sequence.

I've checked my CPU pins and motherboard socket, but that all seems fine. I've also tried a dry run with just one DRAM stick, CPU fan and GPU, but still didn't get any video output.

Could this mean that the CPU died?

    Specs

    Component Name
    CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600
Motherboard Asus ROG Strix B450-I Gaming
GPU Sapphire Nitro+ Radeon RX 590 8GD5 OC
    RAM G.Skill Trident Z RGB F4-3200C16D-16GTZRX
