MSI GS66 Stealth, Asus ROG zephyrus g14, or the Eluktronics Mag 15? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:58 PM PDT The mag 15 is currently on sale right now for $1400 with peripherals, so that's something to note. I was looking at the the 10SE version of the gs66, that has the 240 hz display and the RTX 2060. The g14 model I was going to get was the 2060 max-q version, and for the mag 15 I was looking mainly at the 1660 to version. I would use it for school, as well as playing some games like fortnite, Valorant, CS, Overwatch, and maybe some other games. I'm looking to hit around 140 fps in those games. If there are any other better laptops around the same price, please let me know. Probably something relatively light, since I bike to school. Also, is there a noticable difference between the 1660 ti, 2060 max-q, and the 2060? Is it worth the upgrade? Thanks. [link] [comments] |

Please help me in finding the best laptop for my needs! Posted: 25 Jun 2020 09:48 PM PDT I'm looking for a laptop. The price range is anywhere from $1100-$1900 ($2000 if necessary). I will be using it for college and gaming. I'm not big into PC games at all, however I am learning. The games that I prefer are large open worlds like the Witcher 3. I would like a ram no lower than 16gb and an ssd around 1 terabyte. Screen size around 17". It doesnt have to be a super high spec laptop; as I said I'm beginning. However, I would like to thoroughly enjoy as much of the game as possible with no problems at all. I'm not too concerned with fan sound or heat (as long as its a sturdy laptop that has been proven it won't break down because of the heating). A beautiful display is preferable. Im not too knowledgeable on what's what and what's best. I want to get the best that I can in my price range. My previous laptop lasted me about 8 years with no service except changing the battery. So I would like my new laptop to have similar to longer life expectancy. Any and all recommendations would be greatly appreciated. [Not Required] if you want to list the specs of your recommendation i would love that. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!!! [link] [comments] |

HP Envy x360 vs HP Spectre Intel i7 Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:19 AM PDT Hi everyone I'm looking to upgrade from my current Dell Inspiron 13. I will be using this laptop primarily for school work (google docs, e-books, powerpoints) and some content creation (light-moderate video editing) as well as average daily use. There's about a $1000 price difference between the Envy vs Spectre but they both seem to be relatively similar, bar Spectre's sexy sleek design and slightly longer battery life. If anyone could advise on which would be a better option for me that would be highly appreciated... Or if you have other (better) recommendations... I'm not fussed on a laptop vs a 3 in 1 these just seemed to be the best options based on my research. Here are links to both laptops: Envy: https://www.noelleeming.co.nz/shop/prod181608.html Thanks [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Jun 2020 03:49 AM PDT Hey, I'm a PhD student so everyday needs of a laptop aren't too high. Just being able to handle having a bunch of tabs and pdfs open. I occasionally do some digital drawing in photoshop and photo editing in lightroom so the ability to handle that would be nice. Would obviously like something that seems to be reliable. Had a surface book, with the thought it could be useful for art, but had a myriad of technical issues from the get go and has finally given in. Max 700 but if there's something that could handle what I want closer to 500 obviously I'd be v happy. Let me know if you need any more info! [link] [comments] |
Suggest me a laptop for making and playing games! Posted: 26 Jun 2020 03:47 AM PDT Hey dudes! I'm a digital media student looking for a replacement after being stung buying an Acer. My price range is between 1500 and 2500 AUD. An i7 and 16GB of RAM has usually been enough, in the past; but now I'm more experienced with laptops, there are a few more things I've discovered that I'm looking for. Here are some things I'll need from my laptop:
I also want to avoid:
Things I don't care as much about:
Now, I know that most of those are probably common requests, so my hardline priorities are, in order: (Processing power, cooling, physical sturdiness) RAM, extended keyboard, graphics card, battery life, and the rest. To sum up what I'll be doing with it, at its maximum:
Hopefully that's enough information to be helpful; once again, my budget is 1500 - 3000 AUD. Or, generally, between 1000 and 1750 USD. I'm willing to go a little higher, if there's a laptop that can better meet all these needs for a higher price. I had a few laptops in mind, at one point; but I quickly realized that I was making some pretty airy comparisons, and that I would be best to leave it up to the experts (That's you guys!) Don't hesitate to tell me if I've got the wrong perception about any of these traits, and feel free to ask for clarity about anything, or if I've missed out on giving some information. Thanks a whole bunch, massive props, and I'm super glad to have found a subreddit like this! Also, I'm sorry about my username. [link] [comments] |
$2000 2-in-1 used for cAD, photoshop, university (australia) Posted: 26 Jun 2020 03:45 AM PDT LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE Total budget: Ideally $1500, but can go up to $2000. Australian. Are you open to refurbs/used? I have no experience with refurbs but if they're reliable I see no harm. Would not buy used. How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Would prefer a 2-in-1 with a 360 hinge. Performance is obviously a huge factor. Longevity, too. Battery life is less of a priority. How important is weight and thinness to you? Important- I will be taking it to university Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. prefer around 14 inches but I'm flexible Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. I will be using CAD, Photoshop, and some games like Sims 4 and Titan Fall 2. If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want? N/A I'm a very casual gamer so this is not important to me Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)? I would love a backlit keyboard. Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion. I hate the two in ones with the stand that comes out of the back of the screen. I've been looking at the HP Envy / 360. I'm wary of certain brands like Toshiba and Lenovo that I've had bad experiences with but those could've just been duds. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Jun 2020 03:33 AM PDT I'm getting enrolled into an engineering course in university. As I have a beast of a pc at home, all I need is laptop that is able to do CAD, take notes (like write on it and stuff as I would like to keep my notes digital in the future), one that is lightweight as well as I'll be carrying around a lot. I'm actually looking at the Surface book 3 but what is deterring me from it is the price... [link] [comments] |

Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:44 PM PDT My friend wants a decent budget laptop (max 800$) that can be used for video editing. A website I saw had this as a recommendation. Was wondering if it was actually good/decent. Acer Swift 3. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Jun 2020 03:14 AM PDT I filled out the laptop questionnaire, it's on the bottom. I'm starting in September as a Computing Science student and I'll probably need a new laptop for classes (My current one runs Windows XP SP2). I had an idea that might be radical and might not work, but please hear me out. Besides a standard Windows machine I would also like to screw around in some version of Linux, because I am curious and want to learn how to work with it and because I might need it for school in the future. My idea was to get a laptop and to pop in a secondary m.2 disk and put some version of Linux on it, that way I can normally boot windows, but when I need Linux I can go into the bios and boot from the second disk. I don't know this is going to work, if you guys know please let me know, I'll also ask the people over at r/laptops. I was thinking that the Eluktronics RP-15 might be perfect for the job, the machines Eluktronics makes don't seem to be very depended on software/drivers (Maybe the fan/wattage configuration and the keyboard backlighting). The laptop looks pretty sleek and seems to have really great hardware and great value. The one thing I am really concerned about is the battery (yes, I know it's being upgraded), I am going to be using it in college so if anyone knows how important battery life is when studying Computing Science please let me know. And another negative is that I could only find two reviews yet (Two excellent reviews btw by notebookcheck and Bob) and that there might be hidden problems that could appear when people receive the unit and since I need it in September I can't really wait for more reviews. I also considered the Asus Zephyrus G14, but Asus is making it a pain in the ass to buy it in in The Netherlands. I really do like the battery and the size. The thermals also seem to be underwhelming and it is pricey for what you get. Ideally I would get like a Dell XPS and have a more powerful desktop at home (Current one is 4th gen Intel duo core and a GTX670), but I don't have the money to upgrade both and I would like to keep the costs as low as possible. If you can please let me know what you think (Don't limit to a laptop suggestion if you want) I would really appreciate some advice. Thanks in advance. LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

Ultrabook suggestion for work? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:38 PM PDT Looking to get an ultrabook for work. Normal web tasks, will be in the field with it but likely at tables/desks, not walking around with it. I currently have a surface pro 3 and the touch screen stopped working and it is beginning to show its age. I think I have narrowed it down to three that I am interested in, would be open to other options as well but the budget is basically under $800 out the door tax inc. Acer swift: https://www.costco.com/Acer+Swift+3+14%22+Laptop+-+Ryzen+5+4500U+-+1080p+.product.100575638.html Leaning toward either the flex 5 or zenbook based on reviews but I haven't bought a laptop in a long time so wanted to get some advice, thanks! Best Laptop with Latest Gen AMD Ryzen CPU? Posted: 25 Jun 2020 07:00 PM PDT I've been eyeing the Lenovo Legion 5 AMD and how much a steal it would be... but then I looked at the graphics card. It seems to be some sort of weird trend where AMD just can't get a good GPU. Is there a Laptop with an AMD Ryzen 4600-4900HotShot that has really great build quality, great battery life, a 144 Hz IPS Panel, good thermal cooling system and doesn't throttle it's CPU and GPU, along with an RTX 2070 or anything close? The Eluktronics RP-17 caught my interest, but I'd like to see other options as well as other similar laptops to this one. On the other hand, if you feel like recommending me an entirely different laptop, go for it.
The Battery should last at least 4-5 hours with the most minimal basic/office usage.
Latest Adobe Photoshop and other Adobe Software Video editing software on par with Premiere Pro. Coding, Programming and Digital Art
Design shouldn't scream gamer. AMD Ryzen Chip along with an RTX graphics card and great cooling system, machine shouldn't throttle any part, be it CPU, GPU or RAM etc...
On a separate note, what do you think is the best Lenovo Laptop for me? [link] [comments] |

Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US: 3000 HRK, Croatia (~400€, ~$400) Are you open to refurbs/used? Nope How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life? Just a normal looking laptop with good build quality, not plasticy and that it doesn't feel cheap, performance is not that important as i'll be using it just for web browsing. Battery life not important, i won't be using it outside of the house. How important is weight and thinness to you? Not that important Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A. 17"+, really prefer a 1080p display Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run. Looking for a decent Laptop mainly for programming Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:48 AM PDT Hello, The time has come for a new laptop, I'm not much of a hardware guy so Im having a hard time coming up with anything. I'd say the general purpose of my laptop should be programming, (nothing graphical, I do some Neural Network training but anything that's really data intensive I just use Google collabs) And I guess I'd also like the luxury of a decently sized screen for streaming services. As for gaming I imagine I'll just keep using my PC. My budget is around 1000$ USD but would prefer to save money if possible. Also not really looking to buy any used models. Thanks! Choosing a laptop for university Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:47 AM PDT Hey, I'm going to be moving onto campus this fall and am looking to get a new laptop for engineering. I do like to play some games on the side with the most intensive being something like call of duty warzone. I narrowed down my choices to 2, and would appreciate some feedback on which would be the best or which one not to get. 1 Razer Blade 15 Advanced edition with rtx 2070 max-q and an i7 9750HI love nearly everything about the Razer, including aesthetics, build quality and the high refresh rate screen as well as the discrete graphics. The only concerning factors for me here are the conflicting reports of battery life and issues regarding longevity/reliability and dealing with Razer's supposedly abysmal customer service if something does go wrong. 2 Dell "New" XPS 15 with an i7 10750H and a 1660 TiThe XPS is a really solid laptop for productivity here and I absolutely love the full 16:10 aspect ratio screen and have heard that the battery life and portability especially are excellent. The only reservations i have about the XPS are it's sub-par graphics which I think will be outdated soon and already seem to lack in comparison to the blade, which is twice as powerful. This seems like a great productivity machine, but one that I feel like I may have to get an eGPU or something similar for in the future. Basically, I love the blade, but issues with Razer's support, battery life and general longevity of the product are pushing me to consider the XPS as an alternative, which is an excellent productivity machine but lacks in the graphics department. Thanks for any insight! [link] [comments] |
Great CPU, but not interested in GPU (that can cause heating problems) Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:23 AM PDT Preface: I currently own a retina macbook pro 13 (Late '13), which I want to "expand" a bit. I tried the 16'' macbook pro in order to preserve the workflow, but the fact that I cannot connect an external monitor with the lid open without heating is a deal breaker for me (both for a comfortability standpoint and for long-term reliability). As far as I understand this kind of heating problem are common for laptops with dGPU; since I don't need the GPU power I am trying to avoid models with dGPU while trying to preserve CPU performance (I went for the i9 version on the macbook in order to have more cores).
My budget can be around €2000+ (as probably I will return the MacBook Pro 16'')
Yes, but it should last, so not too much used
Build Quality = Battery Life = Performance. It would be nice to have an equilibrium: I travel a lot so Build quality and battery life are important, but I want to be able to have performance, expecially if I'm plugged in, at the office or at a hotel and I want to run some analysis etc...
The lighter the better.
minimum 14'', maximum 16" (preferably high res, since I'm coming from a Retina screen)
I plan on doing mostly programming and data analysis (RStudio, Python), little photo editing, at the moment Teams and Zoom.
Nah, sometimes some retro-gaming (Doom, click and point from the 90s, not much more)
I would like a good, backlit keyboard, since I am mainly writing and programming; very nice trackpad (I'm coming from a macbook). Possibility to upgrade to 32GB ram is very welcome since I am using RStudio. Possibly large and fast SSD (at least 1TB). As many cores as possible (parallel computing)?
