How To Set Up Ubuntu 20.04 for Gaming With No Terminal Commands Posted: 02 Jun 2020 03:55 PM PDT Hi everyone. I've produced a quick video that covers setting up an installation of Ubuntu 20.04 for gaming by installing and configuring Steam Proton, Lutris, Wine, Feral Gamemode, nVidia GPU drivers and Liquorix Kernel all without using any Terminal commands. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3whS0GfB1nU This was produced based on previous feedback on my videos that using the Terminal would be off putting to potential new users of Linux. For people who prefer a written guide, see below: STEP 1 - ADD PPAS FOR NVIDIA GPU DRIVERS, LUTRIS, AND LIQUORIX KERNEL Open the Software & Updates utility and navigate to the Other Software tab, and click the Add button. In the APT line you want to type in the following: For Lutris: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/lutris-team/lutris/ubuntu focal main For nVidia GPU Drivers: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/graphics-drivers/ppa/ubuntu focal main For Liquorix Kernel: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/damentz/liquorix/ubuntu focal main Then click the Close and Reload buttons to refresh the repositories. STEP 2: USE SYNAPTIC PACKAGE MANAGER TO INSTALL NVIDIA GRU DRIVERS, WINE, LUTRIS, STEAM, AND LIQUORIX KERNEL. For nVidia GPU Drivers, search for nvidia-driver and mark the latest version for installation. For Wine, search for wine stable, and mark wine for installation. For Lutris, search for lutris, and mark lutris for installation. For Steam, search for steam, and mark steam-installer for installation. For Liquorix Kernel, search for linux-image-liquorix-amd64, and mark for installation. Once done, click the Apply button, and once installation is complete, reboot the system. STEP 3: ENABLE STEAM PROTON FOR ALL GAMES IN A STEAM LIBRARY Launch Steam, sign into your account, navigate to Steam / Settings / Steam Play / Advanced and tick the Enable Steam Play for all other titles option, and restart Steam to apply. STEP 4: ENABLE FERAL GAMEMODE TO WORK WITH GAMES LAUNCHED THROUGH STEAM OR LUTRIS Feral Gamemode is pre-installed in Ubuntu 20.04. For Steam: Launch Steam, click on the properties of a game, navigate to SET LAUNCH OPTIONS and type the following: gamemoderun %command% For Lutris: Launch Lutris, navigate to Preferences, System options, and type the following into the Command prefix: gamemoderun Please note that you will need to tick the Show advanced options for the Command prefix to appear. Either way, click Save once done. As always, if you found this helpful, please consider subscribing to my channel to support me. Thanks Ryan [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2020 07:30 AM PDT iHi! I am completely a noob when it comes to technology, however with covid I am needing zoom to teach my classes. With the new zoom update I've attempted to upgrade it but whenever I got to install it just brings me back to my original screen, creating a loop. I also tried to uninstall the previous zoom I had through "terminal" but that popped up an error. Please help or suggest where I can get help at this time. Thanks! EmmaLee [link] [comments] |
Returning my laptop back to stable BIOS and OS conditions Posted: 03 Jun 2020 10:35 AM PDT As my main computer, I use a Dell XPS 15 9570 (i5-8300H, no dedicated GPU, small battery, 2 SSDs - one m.2 and one 2.5"). This is connected over Thunderbolt 3 to an eGPU (Gigabyte GTX 1070, 100W Power Delivery) and an external monitor over DisplayPort. Since May of 2019, I used Ubuntu 18.10 every day without issues. Halfway through May of 2020, I managed to ruin everything, and I now want to start over from scratch. I would appreciate some advice before making the next few steps. Problem Starts in May of 2019 when I jumped the gun on installing Ubuntu 18.10 on my secondary drive, locking myself out of my windows drive by mistake. I'm hazy about what step I failed to take, but Windows BitLocker was giving me issues. Around October 2019, Ubuntu 18.10 upgrades to 19.04 without problem. I upgraded in order to use a script that would let me switch between my eGPU and iGPU. May 2020, Download issues sprang up one day, which prompt me to upgrade to 19.10. After the upgrade, as soon as my video card is called by a program, my computer freezes up. This prompts me to change my video drivers. After new video drivers fails to solve the problem, I decided to fresh install Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Interestingly enough, the instance on the live USB immediately recognizes my eGPU and begins sending signal to both displays. I thought the dark days were over. Fresh install on secondary drive fails to boot. Now I'm panicking. I try reinstalling. No luck A fresh install is accidentally written to my inactive Windows drive. Now I'm really panicked. This drive also fails to boot. I tried getting into grub2 and booting from there but I couldn't reach the menu, only the grub2 terminal screen. This is where I'm at now. Should I try a factory reset of the BIOS? I have the ability to install a fresh copy of Windows 10 again. Should I do that? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2020 01:35 PM PDT Can anyone help me make a script that will close all applications and shut computer down in the case of a fan failure? I am mining Ravencoin with my GPUs and fans roll at 85% . My temps are OK for being in an open case (59-68c). But I would be worried to think about what could happen if a fan failed while I'm not around. I don't want it to burn up and melt through the desk. Can anyone recommend any free resources or tutorials for this sort of script? The only thing I've made are simple scripts to change directory and launch applications. In the past I found a script on a forum that uses hdparm to put my external drive to sleep after 20 minutes, which is very useful. I understand that learning scripting can be a journey, and I am watching some youtube videos to learn some things, but I kinda need a script like yesterday. I'm just wondering if there is a good soul out there who could help me out. Thanks for your time and Take Care. [link] [comments] |

No WiFi connection on HP laptop running Lubuntu Posted: 03 Jun 2020 12:26 PM PDT Okay. Seeing as I've gone around in 15 trillion different fucking circles. Some details. I'm running a HP Pavillion 15 cw0000na laptop which needs a rtl8821ce network driver. I've installed the driver in the past and it worked perfectly. But yesterday I noticed that my laptop's fan was playing up. So I performed a hard reset of my device, which fixed the fan issue, but has screwed my WiFi up. My WiFi works on other devices, just not on Lubuntu. I'm running the latest version of Lubuntu. What I have done:

How to pass command line arguments to two different init() library functions? Posted: 03 Jun 2020 10:32 AM PDT I am using the gstreamer and the gtk library to try to create a linux application. Posted: 03 Jun 2020 10:28 AM PDT I have two options when it comes to installing Ubuntu:
I wouldn't call myself a really advanced Linux user cause I want to use it for just school work and web browsing and a lil bit of coding on Python without Windows hogging my system resources and want to switch back to Windows whenever I want to play games with my friends on PC so I was wondering if I need to go through the hassle of having to declare my own partitions and what benefits does it have over letting the Installer do everything on its own? Cant log in to new mint install - “please unlock disk sda5_crypt” Posted: 03 Jun 2020 10:02 AM PDT Main problem: please unlock disk, i have password but it's not working, keyboard issues Laptop a —————————————————— Background info: So im very new to linux , this is my first ever time installing! Super exciting, everything (except number key pad) was working perfect in the live usb, but for some reason it didn't recognize windows. Originally i was trying to dual boot with windows but when i got into mint no matter what i did it would not recognize any partition and eventually it came to my attention i could only format in exfat or ntfs but not fat32 which is what the live usb was labeled as , im still not sure that was what went wrong but in any case i gave up and decided if i really needed windows i could figure it out later. So i just went for it and erased windows Actual problem: And then on the first time booting it up, it looked like it would work and then i got "please unlock dick sda5_crypt" I was confused at first but now im pretty sure it's because I encrypted it, I DO have the login password and the boot up password (regretting doing both but whatever) But there is a problem with actually entering the password Caps lock key doesn't work Cant tell if shift keys work because I cant see the password im entering just dots Numlock/ number keypad doesn't work (Actually now it looks like if i press 5 on the keypad it dose enter numbers in but it also shows we like a command line saying please unlock sda5_crypt which is confusing ) And the problem is my password is like half symbols and numbers and caps And then the last problem: It only lets me type 16 characters Both passwords i set were longer Soooo What the hell? Right now I'm basically just trying to figure every possible version on my password out and cross them off as i try them But i did get locked out for a minute so now i am concerned Laptop b —————————————————— I tried the live usb on my even older and less functional laptop, and it actually got it start for the first time in like a year, but the number keypad/ numlock not working was an issue again, (so it's not just the laptop like it's a pattern) and then that computer (laptop b) basically died (battery is kaput) in the middle of installing, and then on trying to load up again, i got an error when i tried to go into the live usb again saying literally "something has gone horribly wrong" which seems ominous Specs/ Other info———————————————— Laptop a is around 5 years old, still nice hp that was on windows 10, was perfectly functional in windows but also slow and prone to aps crashing, constantly stalling , leaving it basically only good for email and netflix (which is why i wanted to try linux) 16gb ram , plenty or storage, outdated graphics card , quad core 1-7 Linux was installed a few days after a factory reset Laptop b is a dell inspiron i think 3000 with dual core, super old, battery and charger need to be replaced, windows fully dose not work anymore, cant do anything with it except load the windows logo and click "get help" over and over forever until it dies. Terabyte of storage but like 4 gb of ram , before it fell into this windows coma it just constantly complained about the charger and the battery like since first out of box Please help! File System folder only has few space left. What can I delete? Posted: 03 Jun 2020 09:13 AM PDT I'm using elementary OS, and when installing it I already noted that I allocated a small space for / (root?) partition due to hard drive already have other data in it (dual-boot with Win10). When I ask around, some say that it is sufficient since the programs use a very small space. But now, I only have 1.1Gb free of 11.7Gb total. Can anyone suggest what can I do to free up some spaces? Also, I tried to use Kdenlive video editor, but the moment I added a clip in there, I got a notification that my drive is already full. I'm guessing temporary data is also stored in root. Is it optimal to install Kdenlive in my second partition (D: drive), and if yes, how can I install it there? [link] [comments] |

Bootable harddrive partition won't boot? How to fix? Posted: 03 Jun 2020 03:55 AM PDT I have an external hard drive (1tb). I tried different configurations of partitioning but in practise it doesn't work. Here what I want: 1 partition - regular FAT (the reason why it is the first: Windows won't read it if it is second, yep sometimes i use windows in parents' pc), 2 partition - encrypted luks partition, 3 partition - linux bootable partition with .iso/.img written in it for my whole linux system backup Everything works except I can't boot from 3d partition. How can I? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 03 Jun 2020 03:43 AM PDT Hey all I am looking for opinions on KDE Kontact, kmail etc as an alternative to outlook (which I use at work). Have tried thunderbird and evolution but don't love the interface of either. I have tended to stick to gtk based applications as I prefer XFCE but am willing to try plasma. Do the various k apps work as seamlessly together as advertised? Alternatively, would I be able to get a bunch of gtk apps (I am thinking geary and gnome calendar) to work together properly? No options of fedora in grub customizer. Help to bring them back. Posted: 03 Jun 2020 07:10 AM PDT (Using Fedora 32) I'm trying to change the grub theme with the help of grub-customizer. "List Configuration" section of grub customizer doesn't show anything about the fedora. The only two options which are listed there are: 1) Windows Boot Manager (on /dev/sd1) 2) System Setup. The fedora is listed in grub menu after booting. But it is not listed in the Grub-Customizer application. After applying this grub theme, only windows logo shows up and fedora logo doesn't show up. Please Help! [link] [comments] |
