    [Techtesters] MSI GS66 Stealth Review

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 07:30 AM PDT

Laptops with dedicated GPU on brand websites but without it on other retailers' websites?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 07:51 AM PDT

I'm planning on buying a new middle-range (lower middle range? my budget is about $700) laptop soon-ish, so I've been browsing brand websites and also general tech retail websites.

Basically what I've noticed is that, at least in the range I'm browsing, the brand websites usually carry laptops with dedicated GPU, while the tech retailers carry the exact same laptops but without dedicated GPU. What's surprising is that the price difference isn't significant enough to explain the missing GPU.

So what's up with that? Are either the brands or the retailers lying? Do brands send out GPU-less laptops to retailers so the customer will buy directly from the brand? I'm confused. (I should probably mention that this is all happening on French websites so it might be country-specific.) If anyone has a clue why this exists, I'd love to understand, thanks!

Help deciding between laptops for college.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 10:25 AM PDT

Hi In August I'll be going to college for pre-med so I don't need anything crazy powerful but I would like it to last as long as possible. I've been looking at the MacBook Pro 13 and the dell xps 13 as well as the razer blade stealth. Does anyone have any recommendations on which to buy or any other laptops. Thank you!

    Laptop Performance issues

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:55 PM PDT

    Hi all,

Iv worked in i.t. for a while but this has me stumped.

My wife has an old HP NC6320 laptop which she uses mainly for browsing social media. She uses Chrome and recently Chrome just seems a complete hog of resources. It's especially worse on Facebook where it's really slow loading and the fan hits warp 9.

I know it's only a single core but just browsing the internet should be ok for it. Iv tried all sorts it has Windows 7, 4 gb ram, a kingston SSD, so it shouldn't be too bad. Loading Facebook pretty much renders it unusable. I have ad blockers installed too.

Any ideas? As I'm running out

Can someone help me pick? Looking for a new gaming laptop

Can someone help me pick? Looking for a new gaming laptop

Looking to get a gaming laptop, trying to get the best bang for the buck. Some videos promote and some bash for all of them so I'm in a toss up as to which is better. I'm leaning towards the left most option currently. The G14 in the middle has the high end ryzen that is blowing the i7 out of the water but it has a max Q GPU which i have heard is slower than a non max Q. then the MSI gs66 seems like a powerhouse but is it really worth the extra $250?

Narrowed down my choices for laptop thanks to ya'll in this sub. Which of these models will continue to perform well in 4 years? I don't know if the chips make a big difference. I want to use it to teach and personal use too. Thank you for the great advice.

Need lap desk recommendation for a 17.3" laptop?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:31 PM PDT

I anticipate using my laptop primarily on our couch, which has little in the way of areas to use a mouse, so I'm hoping something exists that I can set the laptop on and still have enough room to use a mouse. I'm planning on getting a lap desk for the laptop either way, though, as I'm sensitive to heat.

I usually use my mouse on high sensitivity so I don't have to move around much/need much extra space.

Tldr recommend me your favorite lap desks and/or fans!

    Matebook D M.2 Screw?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 01:55 PM PDT

    Hey all,

I'm in the process of replacing the m.2 ssd in my Huawei Matebook D (14" intel version. I believe it's 2018 model year). However, in the process of removing the screw, it has become stripped and we've had to use a dremel to remove it, which has ruined the screw head.

My question is, does the D use a proprietary screw size to hold in the m.2 drive? I tried using an m2x3 screw, but it didn't fit properly into the mount. Any suggestions of other sizes that I should try using? Thanks!

For reference, my model is this version: https://www.newegg.com/mystic-silver-huawei-matebook-d-53010cqy-mainstream/p/N82E16834324034

Can anybody explain how this deal of $140 for a 2017 MacBook Pro with Touch Bar is possible?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 01:44 PM PDT

I was browsing on eBay when I saw this:

    https://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-MacBook-Pro-13-3-Retina-BTO-CTO-Core-i7-3-50GHz-16GB-512GB-SSD-Mid-2017/202985706878?hash=item2f42e4157e:g:0D0AAOSwFkdetagp

So I went through my checklist. Bad seller? No. Closed early? No. Relisted? No. Refurbished/repaired? No. So what's left? Do these "deals" happen? And how would the seller even accept this outcome, a sizeable loss of $800?

    School computer/light gaming

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 09:40 AM PDT

I'm heading to college next year, and I'd love to find a better computer. Right now I believe I have an N22 chromebook. I'd love something just as small, but could also play Minecraft. Is that possible with a budget of $400, and if so what are some options?

Dell G5 SE or Asus TUF A15?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 09:35 AM PDT

Both with the Ryzen 7 4800H CPU, Dell has the RX 5600M GPU while A15 has the RTX 2060. Both have 144 hz displays, 16 GB DDR4 RAM, 1 TB SDD. With this configuration the Dell is $100 more, but Dell also offers some discounts that could probably reduce that differential. Plus the Dell is in stock right now, while the Asus is not available anywhere. Aesthetic isn't great on the Dell but I'm not concerned about that, mostly looking for longevity and performance.

(Up to £850, United Kingdom) Looking for recommendations for an ultra-book/ 2 in 1. Must have at least 1 Thunderbolt connector.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 01:01 PM PDT

    LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

    • Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
      Up to £850
    • Are you open to refurbs/used?
Refurbished, yes assuming a reputable seller, used not at this time.
    • How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Ultrabook or another reasonably sized 15-inch model.
    • How important is weight and thinness to you?
Nothing too heavy or Thick but ultra light/ thin is not a priority for me
    • Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
15 ideally, open to 13 or 17 for a good deal, no smaller or larger.
    • Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Light Gaming (league of legends, Minecraft, Retro), Premiere Pro (1080p, 30fps), Photoshop, Heavy Gaming (with an external GTX 1070).
    • If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Sixth without external GPU in light games mentioned above, 1080p is absolutely fine.
    • Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
A good keyboard for typing, nothing particularly fancy though, just good enough. Good enough to build quality for travel between home and Uni. The rest is un imported except for the Thunderbolt connector which is able to run an external GPU enclosure, this is absolutely non-negotiable.
    • Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
The intended use case is a relatively light video editing and photo work, as well as typing browsing and some light gaming on a day to day basis. Then when away from the powerful desktop, such as a trip or holiday, bring External GPU enclosure including my main GPU (GTX1070). T0 be able to play more demanding games (probably mostly Subnautica lol) and do more serious Vidoe work.
