How do I remotely SSH into a server through VPN when that server is hosting the VPN (Softether)?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 10:58 AM PDT

I've been trying to set it up and when I connect remotely it gives me 192.168.30.10, with 192.168.30.1 as the gateway. I'm trying to SSH into it, but it times out. I also can't SSH into its normal ip-address of 192.168.1.xx.

    Any tips?

I get the impression that it has something to do with the bridging, but although I was able to set up a bridge nothing much changed.

Advice on extending network to outside the home?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 02:39 PM PDT

Looking to extend my wireless into the backyard and opposite side of the home.

Currently living in a standard high ranch, property is 100x100 with 300down from ISP.

I've got an edgerouter>switch>uap-ac-lr on one total end of the house, and on the opposite end just a beacon plugged into the wall wirelessly uplinked to the LR.

Performance overall is not great but it is livable and stable. I've done rfscans and read up on here and forums about adjusting the channel width and transmit power etc.

Other side of the home is a UniFi beacon. Performance is worst. I believe it uses the 5ghz radio for uplink and only puts out the 2.4. Again it serves its purpose.

I'd like to really extend not only my signal but performance as well to the backyard. I'm thinking about replacing the beacon with another AP.

Unfortunately for now I'd have to continue using wireless uplink as I don't have the means to run cabling right now. Would you recommend another LR or would something else better serve this purpose?

Ubiquity has so many products now I'm unsure which direction to go.

    Thank you.

I need help on an Upgrade.

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 02:56 PM PDT

So, I am absolutely not an expert in tech, but I really want to upgrade the WiFi at my house. I currently am using a arris SBG6580 and I really don't know that much more about it. I game a lot with my little bro and my parents stream Netflix a ton, but when my brother and my parents and I are all online, I can't really play a game or chat with my friends online. My parents are somewhat stingy on money but they aren't opposed to buying something if it's worth it, so does anyone know a good replacement for these troublesome times? Also I don't know if I need to give any more information about the device in question, but I want to clarify that it is a modem and router all-in-one kind of thing. My parents said that they would prefer a solution that has that same all-in-one sort of feature but they don't seem to be opposed to a simple separate modem and router either.

Sharing Google WiFi connection next door

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 09:21 AM PDT

My partner lives across the street from me and we're trying to share my internet connection to save money (sorry ToS).

I have a fiber connection with google WiFi as my modem/router through the service provider. Our buildings are 100 ft apart and we have a clear line of sight between two windows. Hoping that adding a google nest point will work but I've read that you can't space those out more than 60ft apart.

A second option would be to pick up a pair of directional WiFi transceivers and routers but that will be more expensive as far as I know.

It's a short distance apart, can anyone recommend a WiFi extender/repeater? I want to avoid coming up with an overly complex solution. I just want to expand the access point without losing much if any speed.

Venting a closet with PC into the attic

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 12:13 AM PDT

I have a closet which is around 2ft by 10ft with a sloping roof. It's in a part of the house upstairs where the roof slopes over the garage. This closet is next to my home office.

    Photo of the closet: https://imgur.com/a/arD1K3Q

I'd like to put my PC in this closet and run long fiber DisplayPort cables / USB cable to my home office. I would then install an extractor fan to vent air from the closet to the attic.

The purpose of this is to a) reduce noise in my office as I record videos/podcasts and b) to reduce heat in my office.

I live in Scotland. It doesn't get super hot here. Nobody has air conditioning.

Most of the other threads I've read on this type of setup are from people in different climates who have AC systems in their home.

    My questions are:

    1. Is this a viable setup for my conditions?
    2. Is there a risk of venting damp air into the attic or of some kind of backdraft?
    3. Is it better vent it outside through the side wall of the house?

Separate Modem + Router for under $200

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:13 PM PDT

I don't know much about this space so I thought I'd ask this subreddit.

I'm replacing a Arris Surfboard modem router combo that I'm not happy with. Small apartment. 2 users. Would be happy with 100 mbps ethernet. Preferably under $150 but I can stretch to $200 if needed.

Troubleshooting “capped” download speeds over wifi

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 07:29 PM PDT

Hello, I'm curious if someone could point me towards troubleshooting tips for an odd issue I'm having with WiFi in my home. Specifically, I get around ~500Mbp/s upload standing next to my router, but I never exceed ~200Mbp/s download.

I have gigabit fiber and get the speeds I'd expect over wired, and the upload speeds seem to make sense for WiFi, but it's curious to me why I can't get over 200 for download.

I have tried this with a couple different routers, and currently I'm using the Synology RT2600ac. I have observed these speeds on multiple 802.11ac-compatible devices (2017 iMac, 2016 iPhone SE, 2018 iPad Pro).

I'm not sure where I should dig next and I'd like to know if anyone has advice for investigating. Thanks in advance!

Can i connect an EoC to a network switch? is there any mayor penalty over speeds?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:17 PM PDT

So, I live with my sister in an appartment, there is no space for a network rack and i cannot put any ethernet cables because they wont pay for it. So googling a little bit I found out that you can carry a connection from coax to Ethernet, my question is if i can put a network switch in my room, connect the Router to an EoC and the other EoC to the switch then run 2 or 3 cables to each of my devices. I have 600mbs symetric.

    Linux/Plex PC killing wifi speed

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 11:42 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I have a plex server set up on desktop ubuntu (I'm a linux scrub). My router is an Asus Rt-3200. Normally I have no issues getting 400mbit over 5ghz Wifi around the house, however, the second that I turn the server on my wifi drops to around 10mbit/s. This is over both wifi and ethernet. does anyone have any advice on how to fix this?

    Thanks

sanity check: does Running a ping test from the router eliminate the router as a source of packet loss?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:16 PM PDT

Some context, TL;DR at the bottom:

Just checking myself here as I try to narrow down the source of packet loss that happens intermittently. I would plug my laptop directly to the modem, and run ping from there, but "live-swapping" the Ethernet cable from modem > router to modem > laptop kills the internet connection and I have to reboot the modem, which always fixes the problem. So I realized if I log into my router, it has a ping diagnostic tool. And I'm assuming since I'm running it from "inside" the router, it's acting just the same as any other device plugged directly into the modem.

QUESTION/TL;DR: Am I correct that if I'm seeing packet loss when running ping diagnostics from inside the router software, that it eliminates the router as the culprit, and it must be upstream? And if it's upstream, does that mean it's my ISP, or is it possible for my modem to be introducing packet loss?

MoCA Filter and MoCA Compatible Modems Questions

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 01:10 PM PDT

    Hi all!

Backstory: So about 2 weeks ago I installed a set of MoCA adapters into my home and things were going great. All of a sudden, my wifi stops working, both the wired and non-wired connections. I call Spectrum up and they send a tech out tells me that my modem isnt MoCA compatible so it will get overwhelmed by the high frequency of MoCA after a while. I installed some filters but I haven't reattached my MoCA adapters yet.

    Questions:

    1. Will reconnecting my MoCA adapters to my modem with the filters attached prevent it from getting burnt out again?
    2. If not, what are some good modems to replace it with?
    3. If this issue will keep reoccuring regardless of a different modem, should I switch to powerline?

Thanks for reading! Any and all feedback is appreciated.

Need help deciding on a Switch upgrade

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 07:07 PM PDT

With my growing network I wanted to upgrade the two dumb 5 port switches I have with one 16 or 24 port managed PoE switch. This way I can use one switch, power my unifi access points, and also create VLANs to segment my iot network, and also learn more about networking since it interests me.

Originally, I was thinking about buying a small business Cisco switch since I think you don't need licensing to use those (their licensing model confuses me so I may be wrong).

My second option was buying a Netgear Business Smart Managed Poe Switch. I was looking at this one as its cheaper than the Unifi switch and had all ports as poe unlike unifi, but has a fan so idk how loud this thing gets but amazon reviews say its loud. Also looks to have L3 support

My third option was just getting the gen 2 USW 24 Port Switch from Unifi. I already have the unifi controller setup for my access points but its way more expensive and I dont want all one vendor unless absolutely necessary (I used to have a unifi firewall before I got rid of that). This switch is also fanless. Last I checked L3 support was supposed to be a firmware update

    My current setup:

    - pfsense box

    - 2 dumb netgear switches

    - 2x Unifi nanoHD

    - 1x Unifi AC LR (only supports passive poe so I'll use the injector separately)

    What I want to do:

    - Have more control over my network and segment my iot devices on a separate network

    Mish mash not mesh

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 03:17 PM PDT

Looking for a bit of advice. My home network is a bit of a mish mash of equipment.

I have 100/10 Internet, with a mikrotik hex router, ruckus r310 ap, netgear 8 port poe managed switch, pi model b as a pihole with stubby and mdns relay and few other bits and bobs. I've got 4 ssids and appropriate VLANs, but nothing is wired except the pi.

All the kit is in the spare bedroom at the front of the house, and naturally the first floor has excellent coverage; it's a fairly modestly sized house. The ground floor is pretty decent too, except towards the back of the house and out into the garden.

I'm thinking of dropping cat6 down into the living room, mostly for the WiFi hungry TV, but this gives me an opportunity to add another AP downstairs - much closer to the garden.

So, do I try and find another ruckus? Do I go for a hap AC? Do I plump for a ubiquiti lr or pro? Or something else? Not sure what would give me the best bang for my buck, especially given I have no other ubiquiti kit, but the mikrotik wireless range gets average reviews.

    Thanks!

Replacing 10GbE fiber NIC w/RJ45 copper

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 03:17 PM PDT

I currently have my desktop and server setup w/Mellanox ConnectX-2 10GbE fiber cards (using Dell GP-10GSFP Finisar transceivers) and a direct cable between.

I'm getting a new motherboard (Asrock X570 Creator) which has onboard 10GbE RJ45.

What's my best solution for my server? Switch out the card for one with an RJ45 port or just pull the transceiver and replace with a RJ45 transceiver? And get some CAT6 cable obviously.

Should I disable the Wi-Fi on the gateway? Will it improve performance?

    Which modem/router setup for comcast/Xfinity

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 06:48 PM PDT

    Hello,

I currently have a Netgear CG3000DV2 and a 175mbps internet package. I have pretty bad connection with this setup and struggle to play FPS games online without experiencing major lag that interrupts game play severely.

I am wanting to switch hardware with the hope of increasing my available speeds over wifi to stop the lag from happening. I primarily play games on xbox or switch online and also at times stream simultaneously on Netflix or something.

I am about to upgrade to a 200mbps plan as well through comcast.

I am curious about renting the modem/router combo from xfinity, but am not so keen on paying $15/mo in rental fees.

I have never owned a separate modem/router setup but would be open to the idea of getting the two devices instead of one, I just truly dont know where to start and internet searches are providing conflicting information.

Two setups I'm currently looking at are the Motorola MG7550/AC1900 or the Netgear Nighthawk C7000 based upon suggestions I've read online, but I also see posts condemning these devices and their compatibility with Xfinity/comcast.

Please provide whatever suggestions you can, and if you have the time be thorough in your explanation. I am a bit of a computer hardware noob so will do my best to understand what is being communicated.

    Thanks for your time

Helping seniors with their wifi network

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 06:09 PM PDT

    Hi,

I'm helping some grandparents with upgrading their home wifi because their grandchildren is having issues with Zoom dropping out. I've been looking at access points, particularly the Ubiquiti Unifi Ap-AC Lite.

Currently they have a Shaw (Canadian ISP) router connected to a D-link switch. After researching r/HomeNetworking, I plan on running a cable from the switch to the basement where I would connect the Ubiquiti access point.

I don't have to replace the switch with a PoE switch since the Uibiquiti comes with a the PoE injector right? Is there anything else I might be missing?

    Thank you so much

why do "structured wiring" cabinets exist?

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 09:21 AM PDT

This might be a stupid question, but my background is in enterprise IT, where we use rack-mounted switches and patch panels. While trying to help my parents get their recently purchased house wired, I've been made aware of these weird "structured wiring" panels that mount in the walls in some newer houses and provide termination points for cable TV and network.

What is the point of these? They're not cheap, yet they seem to offer less than a standard wall-mounted rack with a patch panel in it. I've never used a coax patch panel, personally, but those exist, too. My fear with the cabinet would be running out of space (where does one mount a UPS in these, for example? or a rack-mount switch?) and also the whole idea of having a weird, proprietary thing rather than a standard installation. Am I misguided here?

    Powerline Question

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 05:59 PM PDT

Before you break out the pitchforks for me using PLAs, let me preface with this: This is an experiment to see if it would work, before I run Cat6.

    Basic network info:
    Internet Speeds: 250/50 (ish)
Wiring: Cat 5e or Cat6 - nothing longer than 2 yards
NICs: All gigabit - minus my RPi4s which seem to only get 100mbps links to the switch. Whatever.

Before today, I had all my gear in the same room, due to no network connectivity in my soon-to-be networking closet. I got max speeds from my desktop and my server when downloading Linux ISOs, no issues at all.

Starting today, I hooked up my PLAs (TP-Link AV2000 Dual port), one in my room, and one in the network closet. Now, my server gets a max download speed of about 4-6MBps (compared to the 25-30 MBps it got before). If I do a file transfer from my server to my desktop, I get about 12MBps.

And lastly, if I'm downloading to my server from the internet, my internet on my desktop goes to absolute shit. We're talking 300+ ping, and anywhere from 1-10Mbps downloads. If there is no download going, the internet is fine. Which is odd because a 4-6MBps download is not even close to saturating my full connection (again, about 25-30MBps).

Am I just to chalk this up to powerlines are dog crap? Or do I have a setup issue I goofed on?

Trouble with webcam (not work in video call)

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 05:45 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

some day ago i received one webcam that buy from MercadoLibre.com (i´m from Colombia); the deal with that camera is this one does not work with any video meet app (skype, teams, meet, hangouts, etc). The camera only work once when i turn the pc but when i try to make a video call it gives a black screen.

To try to fix this i already do this: update drivers from device manager, uninstall and reinstall the camera, check the antivirus to avoid some security issue. With this options the camera work like two times but it seems to be some random behavior.

If anyone knows something to do, i really appreciate the help and advices.

    Thanks in advance

Help Moving Modem without Technician (dsl, kind of)

    Posted: 26 Jun 2020 05:32 PM PDT

So I get internet through my phone jack I guess. (It's not dsl, but some weird thing called starry: https://starry.com/technology.)

Right now my modem is in our guest room and I would like to move it to our living room. Unfortunately, I am being told I can't do that without a technician coming out. But with COVID and my stubborness I'd prefer to do it myself.

So this picture is what our media console or whatever it is called looks like. My guess is that I have to move those wires at the bottom to a different spot, to be able to move the modem. (the wires connected, not the hanging ones or the Ethernet cables).

Before I took the plunge I figured I would see if anyone could tell from just looking at the attached picture if that made sense.

    Thoughts?
