Help terminating outdoor CAT6 cable Posted: 02 Jun 2020 11:34 AM PDT I don't know if I should cut the middle plastic when terminating the CAT6 cable. All the videos and tutorials don't have this white plastic in the cable so idk what I should do? Here's the picture P.S this is my first time terminating an Ethernet cable 😅 [link] [comments] |
Got my ISP speed connection upgraded, and realized I don't need that much speed! Posted: 02 Jun 2020 03:45 AM PDT Short summary : Got upgraded to 600/600 Mbps from 300/300 Mbps , and I realized after a long battery of tests that none of my devices can handle more than 400-500mbps over Wifi (lenghty explanation here) Yes, there is still ethernet, but my main device is a laptop, so not that convenient. As a result, I realized, that for the first time in my life, I have too much speed, and cannot even use the full potential of it. Has anyone realized that? Internet has become fully comoditized, as water and electricity. You just don't ask how many PSI or KWH you have at your home, from now on you just have Internet, and that's it. (p.d: 2 years ago I had no other option than a shitty 20MBPS XDSL . Fiber has changed the game for consumers) (p.d2: my first internet connection for reference was 33.6kbps, that is 18000 times slower than now) [link] [comments] |
UK Redditors, let’s talk about internet providers Posted: 02 Jun 2020 02:09 PM PDT Hi! It's me again, planning my next moving. I have a few questions about internet providers in the UK. I don't need crazy speeds but I'd like to have a decent upload bandwidth because of work.
Thanks, and stay safe everyone! Edit : Brighton/Worthing [link] [comments] |
Have LAN and WiFi on at the same time Posted: 02 Jun 2020 07:45 PM PDT I want to keep both on at the same time, but after I connect to the wifi, it disconnects after about 30 seconds. Is there a way I can have both stay on all the time? [link] [comments] |
Stuck on a wifi issue for 2 years now. Fed up. Posted: 02 Jun 2020 02:05 PM PDT My network is with bell, a Canadian network provider, and I have the best wifi they can provide. My Modem/router is the Home Hub 3000, and it's in my living room, in one corner of the house. My bedroom is on the second floor, in the other corner of the house, furthest possible. I have horrible connectivity issues, my connection barely works, I sometimes have to wait upwards of 5 minutes just for google to load on safari on my phone. Whenever I use one device, I disconnect all my other devices, and I still struggle to get things done. I've tried the home pods they provide (wireless wifi extender) but they make absolutely no difference. I've tried convincing my parents to let me drill a hole through the roof, to connect a wired router to put upstairs, but it's just not an option. I've asked the builder of the house if the phone line upstairs is connected through the wifi, it is not. I don't have another optic port or whatever anywhere else in the house,(I've got a decent understanding of how all this crap works but correct me if I'm wrong with anything I say). Is there ANYTHING I can do, something I can buy, anything that will resolve this issue for me? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2020 06:58 PM PDT Hello! Just bought an Edge Router X and an AC Lite. Super happy and everything works well. However, I had my modem installed in the basement but I do not want it there anymore. I am not sure if I understand correctly. Can I simply disconnect my modem from the downstairs coax cable and plug it in any other coax cable around the house? Let's say I unplug my TV terminal in our living room and I plug in the modem, does the same cable provide both TV signal and Internet? If I can, would it be safe to assume I can plug in that Coax cable into a Splitter that will provide both the TV terminal and the Modem? Thank you for helping a noobie out! [link] [comments] |
Help with router and no internet access Posted: 02 Jun 2020 02:01 PM PDT Hey guys I have an archer C7 V2 that I just flashed with DDWRT successfully due to needing a vpn on my router. I use a nighthawk MR1100 mobile broadband hotspot connected through an ethernet cable to my router. Before I did the flash the Internet access worked fine. No issues. Now I don't know what has happened but there is no Internet access through the Wi-Fi. The ethernet has no internet access either. I AM A NOOB when it comes to IP addresses and all of this stuff. But I manage to complete it when I have a YouTube video to help me through. I need help big time if anyone can assist through messages, comments, email or even text. Thanks guys! [link] [comments] |
Desperately need help with super low upload speeds (Spectrum) Posted: 02 Jun 2020 07:35 PM PDT I am in desperate need of help. As of a few days ago, my upload speeds suddenly range from 0.5 - 3 Mbps. Usually I get around 8-10 Mbps consistently for the last year and a half. Download speeds remain normal. I am with Charter Spectrum. This is super frustrating for me as I livestream quite frequently and now I'm unable to livestream now due to super low upload speeds. Also, can someone explain to me the huge discrepancy I get when running the Google speed test versus the Ookla speed test? Google Speed Test Results (1.51 Mbps upload) Ookla Speed Test Results (11.91 Mbps upload) I had a Spectrum tech come over my house today and he said he couldn't find anything wrong. I'm at my wit's end. ANY help would be appreciated, I'm super frustrated and desperate :( [link] [comments] |
Slow download speed, but high upload? Posted: 02 Jun 2020 03:43 PM PDT These are my test restults from Ookla. Other speed test websites are very similar. My ISP is Windstream and we live in a rural area. We've always had problems with getting good internet speeds, but recently we've gotten an upgrade. So that we're actually somewhat capable of getting decent speeds now. 50 down and 50 up is what we pay for. I'm not sure what might be causing this slow down, but I've never seen download/upload speeds this varied before. Any idea what might be causing this discrepancy? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2020 07:27 PM PDT I realized my computer runs better wired, but i don't have ethernet output in a my room. And I'm 19, living at my grandmother house. So i have a question. Is it possible to do the networking myself, and what would i need if i do. If i can't is there any other suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2020 03:32 PM PDT Hello all, I am looking for some advice with the configuration of my home network. Currently, I have spectrum internet (modem -> wireless router), but would like to build out my network a bit more. I have acquired a switch, so I tried to introduce that with the goal of running cat5 to a couple of my other devices (server and nas device) and potentially segregating them from the wireless network. I thought I knew what I was doing, but ... Here's a quick drawing of what I tried: https://imgur.com/a/7g8GCbC This didn't work as I expected. The wireless router was able to connect to the modem via the switch and the wireless devices worked fine. However, the server wasn't able to obtain an IP address or access the internet. What I think I need is this: https://imgur.com/a/Jfch3Bj I'd love to understand this better, so any resources would be appreciated. Also, I've listed out some options I'm investigating for the router. Any suggestions or insights there would be greatly appreciated also. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2020 07:11 PM PDT I apologize if this isn't the right sub for this. I've been trying to find answers to this for years. I've lived in the same house my whole life (I'm 20) and our WiFi has consistently gone out for as long as I can remember. It's out more than it's in. We have our provider send people out ALL the time and nothing ever fixes it. They usually change the splitters, get it going, then it goes back out when they leave. They're the only provider in our small town, so we have no choice but to stay with them. But, no one else that I know of around here has these problems. Sometimes it'll have a good run for a a week or so, but overall, it's out every day and just keeps getting worse. Sometimes it'll work if we restart the modem, but that's even starting to work less. We live in the mountains with little cell service so it's really frustrating, especially as a college student. Our home phone goes out when the WiFi goes out also, but not our cable. Not sure if that's important info (I know nothing about this stuff lol). I don't expect anyone to know the exact issue, just wondering what people think it could be. Edit: When I say WiFi, I mean wired internet as well. Sorry! [link] [comments] |

Firewall is getting hit with a ton of spoofing indicators. Is this normal? Posted: 02 Jun 2020 02:31 PM PDT My LAN is using class C IP addresses (I think that's what you call them). However, this is what my router is showing me. Is this normal? Thank you! Here is the log. https://imgur.com/a/VaLBn5Y [link] [comments] |
Firewalld successfully adds interface to zone then immediately forgets it. Posted: 02 Jun 2020 05:57 PM PDT I'm trying to setup a raspberry pi as a router. I found [this](https://linuxhint.com/raspberry_pi_wired_router/) tutorial which got me started. I followed it and (through a cross over cable) got my laptop to connect over ethernet. I was elated. So the next step I figured was PI-Hole for DNS and DHCP. So I downloaded PI Hole and installed it, but couldn't connect to it's web interface. netstat said it bound the port on 0.0.0.0, and then I remembered I installed firewalld. So I started poking at it's configuration. I added http and nothing happened. I rebooted for good measure and now all the firewalld rules appear to have disappeared: Nothing. Strange, but fixable. I then executed the following two commands: How? I literally just added it and it said it was successful but immediately querying it shows that it has not been added. What am I doing wrong here? Multiple SSIDs and Smart Home Hubs (Ring edition) Posted: 02 Jun 2020 11:54 AM PDT Hello again! Now that my Unifi Network is up and running, I ran into the fantastic problem of connecting ring cameras to a LAN with multiple WAPs. To keep it short, I fixed this by creating a separate SSID on each particular WAP closest to a group of ring products. After doing this. Everything works great through the ring app. Now the enigma is, I want to set up smart home integration piece by piece (as I can afford it), starting with the Ring Security system. I want the ring app to be able to control lights, locks, security, cameras, etc. I believe the app will integrate everything regardless of the SSID each of the items is on. Can anyone confirm this will work? Secondly, if I want to integrate something like a touch screen (tablet style) hub, where I can see the video of any given camera, are certain products going to play nice with my setup, and others not so much? Just looking for some general advice. Much appreciated! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2020 05:44 PM PDT Ok. New to home networking. My house has Ethernet in all rooms. The cat5 goes from wall plate to a box outside the house where fiber comes in from the provider. What I plan to do is put all these loose ends to a gigabit switch. Then inside the house be able to hard wire a tv. And in the living room have my router plugged into the wall. Effectively I would be going from a switch to a router. Does this seem like it would work? Is it true that anything that can be hardwired the better it is and things coming from the router hardwired don't affect available speeds. I have a router with 5 ghz and 2.4ghz. Currently mine and my girl friends phones are on 5ghz and able to hit 100 mbps on a speed test. Our laptops are on 2.4 and they can reach 50 mbps. When we hook our phones to 2.4 though they can only reach 10-20mbps. Is this normal. Thanks in advance. [link] [comments] |
Good Modem/router for small Apartment? Posted: 02 Jun 2020 05:17 PM PDT Moving into a new apartment and spectrum is offering me to use one of their routers for 5 dollars a month, or I have the option of buying my own equipment. For a single person in a 700 Sq ft apartment, what modem router combo should I get? I only use my PC with Ethernet so having strong wifi isn't even a main consideration. I just need something stable for playing p2p fighting games online. Thanks for reading! [link] [comments] |
Looking for Firewall/NAT/DHCP/DNS Suggestions Posted: 02 Jun 2020 05:17 PM PDT I'm starting to get frustrated with some of my network infrastructure and was hoping to get some suggesitons on different options or alternatives I haven't considered. I have a mostly 10G network with a gigabit fiber connection. What I'd like:
What I've tried: pfSense ++ Easy support for IPv6, DHCP, DNS, and VLANs ++ Easy to find support ++ Hacky, but pfatt allows me to bypass the AT&T gateway -- pfatt is pretty hacky. It currently has an infinite loop on startup to do the 802.1X authentication, and has to use netgraph to deal with the VLAN0 tagging -- Doesn't support being DHCP server for other subnets pfSense works fairly well for a basic configuration, but I started looking elsewhere when I attempted to add multiple VLANs to my network and wanted inter-VLAN routing to happen at the switch level. Inter-VLAN routing on the switch works fine, but then I need an external DHCP/DNS server, or modify pfSense's config files to allow for the DHCP server to work with a DHCP relay. WRT AT&T, Mikrotik RB4011 ++ Supports AT&T 802.1X authentication and VLAN 0 tagging out of the box (https://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?t=154954) ++ Out-of-the-box support for DHCP for other subnets -- IPv6 support doesn't seem great This is what I'm using now and it works great until I tried to add IPv6 support. As is, I'm unable to get an IPv6 address from my ISP. The Mikrotik just sit's saying it's "Searching...". Yesterday I did have IPv6 but then it disappeared after a reboot. From reading online, I'm not the first to have problems with IPv6, but there are also plenty of people that have IPv6 working correctly. It's very possible, and likely, I'm doing something wrong. But the fact that it doesn't come with IPv6 enabled out of the box isn't the best sign. Other options: OpenBSD ++ Very secure and lightweight ++ Defaults to VLAN0 tagging out of the box, and comes with wpa_supplicant for 802.1X authentication (though I haven't found good documentation on how to use it) +- No webui -- Not straightforward to setup or manage (though there's a decent writeup here) A separate DHCP/DNS server +- Separation of concerns -- Seems complex to setup I'm not opposed to setting up an isolated machine to handle all DHCP and DNS duties for my network, but it doesn't seem straightforward or simple. From my limited research, it seems like the advice is to use dnsmasq, which is an all-in-one solution that should "just work", or to use isc-dhcp/Unbound/Bind9, which is the most secure but complicated to setup. I'm willing to do that work if required, but I haven't been able to find a good guide that would leave me with a setup for 1) DNS resolution of DHCP leases and 2) IPv6 support. Something like Pi-hole can work for this purpose, and is certainly easy to setup, but in order for it to handle DHCP for other subnets, you have to delve into the config files for each subnet, rendering the webui moot. I may just be bad at googlefoo, but I haven't been able to find a guide for setting up a combined DHCP and DNS server that isn't a Windows DC. My major concerns are IPv6, VLANs, and DHCP/DNS. IPv6: I know IPv6 isn't required at home, and due to IPv4 not going anywhere, I'd be required to maintain a dualstack network anyway. It's more the principle of it. I understand the issue with IPv4 and hate dealing with NAT issues with consoles and games. I know that's not going anywhere anytime soon, but I'd like to try to help be part of the solution by using IPv6 whenever I can. AT&T gives me a /60 prefix so I'm even able to give each internal VLAN it's own IPv6 subnet. VLANs/DHCP/DNS: VLANs also aren't required for my setup. I have a minor homelab, but nothing very crazy. A few different VMs for various services, a lancache, a pihole, eventually a security camera system, but nothing that crazy. I already have a separate IOT VLAN for security and most other devices are "trusted" enough that I'm not super concerned. But I'd like the ability to isolate things even more. I have 10Gb infrastructure, so I'd like to setup a VLAN for storage that doesn't clog up my main VLAN. That's something that's fairly easy to do with static IP addresses to get around the pfSense DHCP server problem, but I much prefer using DHCP with static leases. I don't have a good memory, nor am I particularly organized, so I like keeping all my static IPs in one place, with DNS backing them up. This is the main reason for looking for something other than pfSense. I'm willing to setup a separate DHCP/DNS box that can hand out DHCP leases and act as an internal DNS server for all VLANs/subnets, but I haven't found any guides that seem to walk through the process. I also have a minor concern about system stability. I like having a separate box that runs all critical infrastructure (firewall, NAT, DHCP, & DNS). That allos me to screw with servers or whatever else I need without having to take down internet for the house. I know I may be asking too much and trying to take the easy way out, but that's why I'm asking. I've been using pfSense for years and it has served me well. The only reason I'm considering something else is due to the issue with VLANs and DHCP. I'm not a networking guy, and I realize that networking is very complicated. I know it's never going to quite be "set it and forget it", but pfSense was pretty much that for me for years. Right now I'm leaning towards just putting all my main LAN devices back on one VLAN, using pfSense, and calling it a day, but I feel like there must be an alternative that can give me everything I want. Does anyone have any other suggestions? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2020 01:31 PM PDT Hi all, I'm looking to upgrade my crappy WiFi router with something with more grunt and more features. Whilst I would love to run ethernet through my home it's almost 100 years old and not in need of decoration. So for the moment I'm using WiFi. I have a cable modem in modem only mode and so my current WiFi access point is the main router for all network devices. I want an upgrade primarily to: A) improve WiFi performance for a three bedroom house (router downstairs, several devices upstairs) B) allow me more network control, particularly traffic shaping to improve game latency C) Cost efficient as possible I'm technical so happy to build from boards if that is more flexible/cheaper than an off the shelf option. I have seen the espressoBin but I can't easily get one in the UK and also the Mikrotik, but I'm not very sold on their security. Any good options? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2020 05:02 PM PDT Hey there, I've set up a raspberry pi to run a web server, listening to port 80 and on a static local IP. I can access it fine from my local network on port 80. I set up my router to forward port 80 to the raspberry pi's local IP. However, when I try and access my public IP, the connection times out and never goes anywhere. Running tcpdump on the pi, I can see that accessing the pi's local IP address from my laptop generates traffic on the pi, which is also obvious because my laptop loads the pi's website. Accessing my public IP, however, does not seem to generate any traffic on the pi. It seems that connection hangs at the router. Any help? [link] [comments] |
Help wiring home using USTEC UX 101 Posted: 02 Jun 2020 04:59 PM PDT Hi everyone, I was trying to set up my modem/router so that it's in a much better spot (used to be in the laundry room), but I couldn't figure out why this gateway hub (USTEC UX 101) doesn't transmit the signal from coax cable that would normally be connected to my modem throughout the house. I tried plugging the coax into the "CATV Antenna Input), but that didn't work, my modem was not online from a different coax connection in a another room. There is however, a splitter from AT&T's DirectTV that I can use to distribute the Internet connection to my modem elsewhere, but that requires disconnecting the DirectTV adapter, the removal of which prevents me from using DirectTv. I also cannot connect both the DirectTv adapter and the coax for my modem into the splitter at the same time, it prevents both from working. Is there a solution to this? Ideally I'd want to use the DirectTv splitter for cable, and use the USTEC gateway hub for my internet. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2020 04:55 PM PDT I have the original Eero which is working fine, kind of, but I could use more distance and speed w/ my 1Gbps connection. I'm looking at buying the ZenWifi AX Mesh. Is it worth waiting until 2021 for 6E or not? Anyone in a similar boat? Did you pull the trigger on a wifi 6 router? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 02 Jun 2020 04:32 PM PDT My laptop seems to occasionally drop wifi connection. It's most noticeable on zoom calls - every 30 or so minutes, everyone will freeze up for 20 seconds then come back. Also, when streaming my Xbox One to my laptop over my wifi network, it will work well for a while but then just drop the connection. Sometimes when web browsing I'll lose internet. Disconnecting and reconnecting to the wifi in windows seems to bring it back online. I don't have these issues with my PC that is wired to one of my router nodes. My wife's laptop (on wifi) does not seem to have these issues, nor do I have interruptions in smart tv streaming (TV is wired into secondary node). I have two Tenda Nova MW6 router nodes. The main one is plugged into my Fios modem. Everything shows full signal strength in the areas I use my devices. My laptop is a Lenovo Flex 14 Ryzen 5 2500U 8Gb with Realtek 8822BE wifi. Lenovo's app says all software and firmware is up to date. Any suggestions for a solution? Also, is there a piece of software I can run on the laptop to monitor wifi connectivity (like give me a readout for how long it is connected and how often and for how long it disconnects)? Thanks. I need Some Helping setting up a Ubiquiti Access Point Posted: 02 Jun 2020 04:01 PM PDT So I bought a house that had a ubiquiti access point already installed, and i pluged it into the POE and plugged it into the switch coming from my router and figured it would just work. It lite up green so i thought everything was good. Then kept running into issues of a dead spot in my wifi when i walked near where the AP is. I figured the connection was just switching form my xfinity modem to the AP. When I was looking up mesh wifi systems to improve this i found out that it's not just plug and play and i never set up the software and never configured the AP so it wasn't actually working. I have no downloaded the unifi software logged in and i can see an AP available but I am unable to adopt it. I just get the message adoption failed update required. No idea how to update it. The only other thing that confused me is it's showing up as a wireless AP not wired. I've tried searching online and several youtube tutorials but nothing has seemed to work. Any idea how to get this fixed and working? [link] [comments] |
